THis was on my to play list for a while. A decent combination of platforming and a bit of leveling and of course a challenge. The void challenges are fair and sometimes hard. The camera can be your biggest enemy sometimes. The fighting is well not great but not terrible. The bosses are easy and you can walk out on most of the mobs. Have 10 hours in and im at 55%. I was trying to think of a reason to not give this game a 10/10, but I couldn't come up with one. I obtained the platinum for it, so I've seen what it has to offer. In short it's amazing, but I'll explain why.

    The Experience
The pacing in this game is done very well. It is mostly a platformer, but the combat mixed in was fun. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the side quests as well as the main ones. It was a bit like an old zelda game, helping people, or not.... no spoilers here. All of the content was well thought out, you can tell the this is a game the developer really cared about and wanted to make.

    Combat
It wasn't particularly challenging, especially once you get the parry down, but it was enjoyable. The boss fights reminded me of games I played growing up. Each one was simple, but very fun. The combat had just enough bite to keep you on your toes, but it wasn't a hurdle to the main focus, the platforming.

    Platforming
The character control in this game is amazing. It's fun just run around levels using your abilities in different ways just to see if you can get to new places. I personally found 2 golden rubber duckie easter eggs just goofing around trying to get to places that might not have been intended. You know you have a good game when its fun without even 'playing', (completing goals).

    Art
The art direction in this game should be applauded. Every character every environment all of it was impeccably done and cohesive. If you enjoy quality art in your games, just look at some screen shots, its amazing.

    Controls
I see on here 'none responsive controls', but I had zero input latency issues, the controls were tight, as they should be for a game like this. It feels good to play, to move around the world.

    The Beast
3d platformers are hard to make work. I personally shy away from them because of the inherent issues with camera control and judging distances properly. This game somehow made it work. yes you might miss a small platform because of the nature of the beast, but it is a rare occurrence. If the fact that it is a 3d platformer is preventing you from pulling the trigger on the purchase, don't sweat it, you wont regret the purchase.

    Summation
This game has made it into my top ten favorites of all time. Playing it made me feel like a kid again. I cannot wait to see what the developer does next, but hopefully it's a sequel. It is certainly my indie game of the year for 2021. Why this game has not blown up but something like celeste has blows my mind, yeah, celeste was ok, but this was amazing. My only regret is buying it while it was on sale, because after playing it, I would have given double asking price. Enjoy, tell your friends, I know I did.

The games crap. There are some superb moments of platforming brilliance and it convinces you to plough through the quagmire of half assed enemies, non responsive controls (healing never seems to work when you need it to), a sheild that is powered by your magic meter and takes two seconds too long to power on for a parry! Seriously give this a miss. I gave it a 4 as the asthetic is amazingThe games crap. Blue Fire does not punish players for exploring their environment and that is further reinforced with the addition of side quests you can pick up along the way. Despite the difficult platforming the game does not feel overwhelming to complete, and there is always a benefit to revisiting old areas. There is always a missed breakable object or an emoting statue that was forgotten; one should not underestimate the power of emoting.

Blue Fire had all the potential to become a top-notch Zelda clone for PlayStation's audience, but misses the mark significantly with dated level design, unwieldy controls and an unforgiving checkpoint system.

Blue Fire walks a fine line between fair challenge and downright frustrating. Tight controls and a wide variety of tricks at your disposal mean you are never short of something new to try, but its punishing gameplay and frustrating checkpoint system drag the game down. If you like a decent 3D platformer and are willing to be frustrated as often as rewarded, Blue Fire is worth checking out.
