This game hits almost every nerve in this old Souls fan's pleasure center. Graphics are stunning. Atmosphere is cuttable with a knife. Even the story is compelling.

This game hits almost every nerve in this old Souls fan's pleasure center. Graphics are stunning. Atmosphere is cuttable with a knife. Even the story is compelling.

Why it doesn't get a perfect score from me is because it reminds me too much of Bayonetta. Yes, that game with the BDSM dominatrix with a whip. I do enjoy the more fast-paced battle system, but it often feels too streamlined, and really, how many strategies are there for killing mobs? In this game, I have two.

Second thing is that I feel the armor/weapon system has been made newbie-friendly in a sense that what matters the most (really) is selecting the right starting weapon for your play style, and then fortifying it to the max. There really is no alternative. Sure, you can switch weapons later on in the game, but making the new axe/sword/cane stronger than the starting weapon is really a struggle. In Souls games, you pretty much counted your stars to get a good drop later in the game (halberd for life), and then stuck to that weapon of choice after experimenting with other tools up to that point. Bloodborne has made this part of the exploration and experience moot.

Secondly, while I do understand the choice of not including any uber armors in the game considering the drain life mechanics of battle, it just sucks some of the soul (pun intended) out of the game.

    No micromanagement needed.

    Much like in Bayonetta.

    Still, love the game.

The story is deep, yet confusing and not spoon feed to you like a lot of movies/games do now. If there was one ray of light in the darkness that is the next gen library it would be, ironically, blood borne. One of the darkest and most fear filled games I've played in a long time. Jim Sterling said it best when he said this is where survival horror lives on, joke or other wise, it was a fairly believable statement. Pick it up if you own a ps4. It's not a system seller, as I believe no single game could ever sale a system to me, but it's totally worth picking up at full price. Expand

I put the disc in and within 1 hour i was hooked and ive never been so happy to be wrong in a video game sense, i expected to put the game in and not like it and return it the next day, but now i cant stop playing, when im not playing it im reading about it. Theres nothing i dislike about this game at all. From Software has really surprised me and propably made on of my favorite games for the last 10 years.
Im pleasently surprised and i will never underestimate a game or film i havent played first again.

The graphics are amazing, the atmosphere is some of the best ive seen in a game, the character and enemy design is great, basically everything about this game is great. For once i cant wait for any DLC and i will buy it. Just dont want this game to end.
Im happy i went playstation this gen i honestly dont see microsoft making any games anywhere near as good as this

I have played and finished all of the Souls games, and I've just finished Bloodborne. My review is for gamers who are familiar with the Souls world and so I hope this review will be of benefit for reflection..

The game has relatively good polish but since it's exactly the same as the previous games in From Software's legacy - that is the use of exact same game mechanics (ooooh no shield this time, what a revolutionary change that is), stats (actually they got worse, bad move!), obscure story telling and atmosphere, I'm not that impressed here. And nor should any gamer who expects improvements.

I'm particularly not impressed with how easy the game was to beat. I found most of it WAY too easy. Beat most bosses on first try. I always play offline so cant speak for the thrill of online. Whats worse, as the game progressed, my weapon choices and armor/skin choices did not. I stuck with the same weapon I got because there was nothing better. In terms of how this could have played out, there never was an incentive to change it up, which brings me to the glaring problems this game has. There's not tactic here, and no real fear anymore. Whereas once you had such a limited amount of Estus flasks and really cared for every hit you took, here you have 20 healing opportunities, and pretty easy 'save points' along the way.

So weapons dont matter (and isn't it about time they should? why are these games not evolving their sophistication? should we just give these games 10/10?). Using big hammers or swords or saws mean nothing, they have very little distinguishing differences.. Charge time is the same (or negligible if a purist can point out its not).

Stats took a massive step back when they needed a massive step forward! One reason I dont see myself playing New Game + is that the stats dont excite me one bit. Bloodtinge? Arcane? really?! why would I boost these in the normal game? there is no incentive at all. Actually, there was no incentive to weigh up how I was going to spend my stat upgrades - since Skill was rubbish and didn't even have weapons to strive toward like in previous titles. Strength, meh. And in the past Endurance had an effect on your burden, and speed, and without it its just lessened the overall charm of skill tree decision making.

Speaking of skill tree, why isn't there one? Same fighting mechanics, but nothing to look forward to. To me this meant a relatively stale experience repeating the same movements over and over without incentive. Weapon upgrades and 'gem' modifications were a joke this time. Pointless. As were the Runes, all of which offer negligible effects you could easily live without. Why not offer proper incentives like offering a new move, or fire weapon, or something useful and INTERESTING for me to care about the Runes, or gems.

Atmosphere is good in this game with beautiful visuals and excellent music - best yet in my opinion due to more haunting orchestral choir, reminded me of Vampire Hunter D, good ambience sounds too. but again if the game is too easy, it just means I'm not afraid. In Demon Souls I'd tread so carefully but in Bloodborne I'm king.

Thats my genuine gaming experience with it and I enjoyed playing yet another Souls style game but I sincerely hoped for more, shouldn't we expect more these days?

    A couple of other irritations:

-Loading times were bad and the logo you stare at could at least be more interesting. Or have world facts on screen or something? and what was worse was you couldn't teleport between locations without having to go 'back to base' which was hugely irritating.
-No pause. Wow, I cant pause the game. Really? I can quit and it'll pick up where it left off but if my wife calls me I'm stuck and cant give her my attention.
-No explanation about how things work - this has always irritated me in the series, I know some people like it but to me it just feels clumsy and unpolished. There are so many aspects where I didn't realise the use of an item or the benefits. People say to go to forums and research about facets you're stuck with but I say that turning a blind eye to a big problem that we're all trying to pretend isn't a big deal when actually it is. I dont have time to mess about on basics.
-Voice acting in general, and script, is pretty b grade. Just means less immersion and From Software have had a history of bad choices here, you'd have hoped they'd hired better professionals in this area.

The hype of fans praising this as the great 'genius' game, best yet etc is fair enough for those who just want the same thing over and over but really for some of us we were hoping for something that IS genius and innovative, that takes things to a new level. There is nothing in Bloodborne that is taking things anywhere it hasn't already been. And while I'll give this game an 8 because its doing what its classic style does best, this is by no means a better game, or a more evolved one and that is a great shame we shouldn't lap up so easily/willingly..

If you are not a hardcore gamer or a gamer who can play your average action RPG on a difficulty above easy you probably will hate yourself for putting a single dollar out for this game. But if you are a gamer looking for a true challenge with plenty of extreme action, fun replay value, great multiplayer and a unique twist on everything then this is a game you must own.

Overall, a very well-made game and could be contender for Game of the Year. Do not get discouraged if you die a million times to top hat wearing, bearded, blade-wielding men and brick trolls. Learn from that and come back even stronger.

Gameplay is brilliant and a notch above the previous souls titles, fast and fluid, you will feel the weight behind every swing. the satisfaction behind every visceral attack, the fulfillment of stomping over the corpse of your foes. Stats has been streamlined to allow for more focus builds and still allow for enough diversity such that everyone should be able to create a combat style they like.

Cons: PvP is kind of hit and miss, there's no issue with gameplay (apart from the usual honor crowd crying and whining about healing), but connectivity truly needs to be improve upon. 10-15 minutes between matches is a frustrating experience that will make dedicated PvP players sob. Hopefully a PvP arena style DLC can be introduce in the future to address this.

Bonus Free Online Content: After beating the game, you get to enjoy the prestigious feeling of being one of the few that beat the game and not letting the game beat you. Get you popcorn and beverage, there's plenty of whiners and crybabies who will claim the game is too hard or is of bad game design, their spirits has truly been broken by Bloodborne.

Mechanically sound, visually haunting, controls very well. Like other From Software games in recent memory, the story is interesting, but doesn't start to come together until the 2nd half of it. Combat is very fast-paced, yet deliberate and tactical.

The graphics are excellent with a decent variety in visual themes for each area. If I had to pick one graphical issue that bothers me it would be that in many prerelease gameplay videos I watched, the blood spray effect would continue long after the enemy was slain and would only stop when the player stop slashing. I wish they kept that feature but it's possible the hardware or engine limitations prevented them from keeping it. The thing that kept me most interested in the game was the world and atmosphere, I just wanted to see what was next. Some of the visual images are really memorable even if it's something as simple as two barn doors rattling in the wind.

The combat is fun but I don't think it offers the depth or innovation of demon/dark souls. You basically have 3-4 stats to level up and 3-5 interesting weapons worth using. The runes and blood gems don't really add much variety to your build. I think anybody expecting the heavy RPG elements of the last game will be upset. Fortunately many enemies have a huge variation in attacks and combos and they sometimes evolve when your insight level gets higher (not sure if it's insight level or just your overall level). Every time I think I've seen it all I get surprised by a new attack, timing, or combo. Overall I really enjoyed the game but miss the depth of the Souls games. I think the game lost some of the originality of the Souls genre when they tried to integrate hack&slash gameplay instead of creating a unique and new genre defining fusion. With regards to graphics, level design, and atmosphere, Bloodborne gets a 10/10, I loved walking around this world. Combat and gameplay get an 8/10, good enough to enjoy the game but not very memorable.

If you love the souls games but isn't a franchise fanatic, you'll absolutely love this game, if you don't like any of the souls games at all, you'll probably be better off having a pass on this one. If you're a souls fanatic, and not just a long time fan of the franchise, you'll generally love the NG experience and hate on a lot of things afterwards. This will mainly be due to nostalgia, but also, at least in some small part, because you've got nothing better to do than to cap crap at random people on the Internet :)

Anyway, dummy back in.... I have only ever played a small section of Dark Souls 2 on PS3 and sold the console/game before properly getting into it. The others have simply passed me by and possibly I was put off by the renowned difficultly. However, after hearing much praise for this and being quite drawn into the 'gothic' setting I thought I would give it go...

I am so glad I did as I have now completed this game twice and can honestly say it is without doubt the best game I have played on this New Gen and possibly one of the best games I have ever played full stop.

Yes it was challenging, and yes I spent 2 - 3 nights repeatedly trying to beat certain bosses (I only get a couple of hours gaming a night these days..), but once I had beaten them, or a particularly challenging section of the game, I found the feeling of accomplishment and reward that I had not felt in years with a game.

It is a game that anyone should at least give a go and I promise if it's given the time of day, you too will enjoy the sense of reward this game offers. Currently at 80 hours play and you don't get that kind of value for money from many games these days.

As a fan of the Souls series before it, i was heading into Bloodborne with the expectation of success, and i was, as expected, satisfied. There is no denying that there are immense similarities to Bloodborne and the souls games before it, but even though it has a similar feel, Bloodborne still distinguishes itself as its own unique game.

First off the combat, it has some similarity to Dark Souls, but the pace is significantly faster and most souls fans including myself have to change tactics from hiding behind shields, to being more proactive in combat. It is still immensely satisfying to slay your enemies, and the inclusion of guns as more of a helpful tool instead of a powerful go to weapon works well and can be lethal if used correctly. Boss fights are great and the design of most bosses is spot on, and although i came across some really easy bosses, most proved to give ample challenge, and some extreme frustration, which makes the payoff of victory that much sweeter. Overall i would say that Bloodborne is harder than Dark Souls 2 and perhaps just as challenging as Dark Souls.

Probably what immerses me the most about Bloodborne is the gorgeous environment, with exceptional lighting, and design that really evokes a certain mood in the player. Some areas are just gross and gave me feelings of dread like blight town had in Dark Souls. The Soundstrack is also equally mesmerizing with a sort of gothic style twist to it, really sets the mood. There are some frame-rate dips, and slow downs occasionally but nothing that really detracts from the overall experience.

Story is as you would expect from a From Software game, where you must attach breadcrumbs along the way and try to unravel the mystery of Yharnam, and all its be-holdings. There is enough story to grasp at though where you feel some progression but full attention to detail is a must, or else you might be a little confused at the end.

Bloodborne to me might be up there with Dark Souls in terms of best From Software games, and after completing the game, i keep coming back for more with NG+, as well as the chalice dungeons, which offer even more to surf through and discover.

I want to first say that I have never played any of the Dark Souls games so Bloodborne was my first game of this type. The interesting concept of this game is the fact that everything has an explanation, singleplayer goes hand-in-hand with multiplayer. From Software are awesome at creating worlds (Miyazaki mostly) and concept and then making a game in which every mechanic and every little detail fits in the world and in the general concept of the game.
Many of us expected Van Helsing meets Dark Souls, nobody expected a love child between Lovecraft (and his Cthulhu Mythos), Inception(ish) and Dark Souls.
The story can be quite cryptic but after some time in Bloodborne most will figure out the story, more or less. The NPCs and their optional quests are easier to find and complete than in the Souls games. The optional bosses provide lore information and items that clarify some of the questions. The story, being presented in the From Software unique way, tends to leave some things to interpretation BUT given the fact that one of the important themes is nightmare-dream(multiple layers dreams) these intentional loose ends tend to become food for thought and lore speculation.

    The Good:
    - awesome presentation, architecture, enemy design
    - awesome changing world
    - awesome animations
    - awesome story
    - fantastic soundtrack!!!
    - precise, dynamic and agressive combat mechanics
    - replay value

    The Bad:
    - some FPS issues
    - some A.I. issues now and then but taking the high difficulty into consideration, sometimes you need the boss to do some dumb things just so you can kill the damn beast (sometimes)
    - long loading times (which did not bother me too much because I did not die too many times, even though I struggled through some areas; if you play the game with patience and do not try to button-mash the whole game then you willl be fine; either way, long loading times are bad)
    - not enough unique weapons (like boss-souls weapons from Souls games)
    - dissapointing Chalice Dungeons
    - anti-coop multiplayer system

Awesomely wonderful game! I found it to be a little easier and not quite as 'cheap' and frustrating as the Dark Souls series. Graphics are wonderful, combat flows very well, bosses are fun, and it has replay value!

The good: this game doesn't hold your hand. Checkpoints are very spread out but there are shortcuts build into every 'level' so that you don't have to grind through the entire map again upon dying. Bosses are memorable and interesting. No shield which encourages aggressiveness and you have the ability to get your health back by landing attacks after taking damage.

The bad: there are some parts where I feel like you HAVE to take fall damage which I didn't agree with. I also had to whip out the guide a few times to progress to the next area. A person could explore everything all around and eventually figure it out. If I didn't use a guide to find the path again I would have dumped another 10 hours into my first play through.

Overall I highly recommend this game to gamers who are sick of the easiness that most games today have. The people I see who give up and rate it poorly are those who sprint into combat button mashing rather than going in with a strategy. This game takes a lot of focus and punishes you harshly for your mistakes.

Best game in the From Software's Souls series. The faster action is a good change. I like that the game feels more like Dark soul than Dark souls 2

BLOODBORNE is one of the best ACTION/RPG games you've ever played or will play if you're okay with dying and trying again over and over and over ... just like the SOULS series you will face agonizing times defeating bosses until you're able to and then you'll feel invincible until the next one. it has a lot of similarities to the Souls games being from the Same Developer; but here gameplayBLOODBORNE is one of the best ACTION/RPG games you've ever played or will play if you're okay with dying and trying again over and over and over ... just like the SOULS series you will face agonizing times defeating bosses until you're able to and then you'll feel invincible until the next one. it has a lot of similarities to the Souls games being from the Same Developer; but here gameplay has a lot more pace. Graphics are really great , each area of the dark city of Yharnam is designed uniquely filled with details. enemies and bosses are really well designed with a touch of class. overall Bloodborne is the best PS4 game out there. do not miss this masterpiece. It's truly refreshing to take in a game of this depth and creativity without it being fed to gamers chopped up with season pass expansions and DLC galore - as many publishers are wont to do nowadays. This truly is a complete game replete with replayability with actual optional areas and encounters to experience; and combine that with the typical From Software strategy of crafting genuinely difficult games where they completely eschew any form of hand holding, you will be spending decent amount of time working through the game in order to experience all that's offered.

First and foremost, the most obvious statement is that the game is initially difficult. This is to say it's difficult if you don't take the time to learn the control scheme well and how to accurately gauge enemy movements. Learning to predict what your enemies will do will ensure success to the highest degree and once you learn how to do this, the game difficulty plateaus. The controls are very tight and each weapon yields a different style of combat where different tactics are required for success. While the weaponry arguably is small, the sheer creativity and the fact that each weapon has a secondary form make it so their quality alone makes up for any perceived lack of weaponry. In addition to your main weapon, you have a sidearm reaching from pistols to flame sprayers. These are not initially intended to be powerful standalone attacks; they are meant to interrupt your opponents to stun and set up for a Visceral attack to yield massive damage, Understanding the mechanics of setting up visceral attacks are key to success for slaying many bosses.

The bosses range from human like creatures, large abhorrently transformed beasts and H.P, Lovecraft influenced other worldly beings and play integral parts in the overall story. The story, in traditional From Software fashion, is not handed outright to you. Conceptually, for Bloodborne, this makes complete sense since you are an outsider to the central region of Yharnam - you are there for the healing blood and end up getting wrapped up in the wake, needing to unravel the mystery of Yharnam to transcend your hell. The story only becomes fleshed out as you progress and discover items and notes to piece it together; and the deeper you go, the more vague it gets leading to conclusions to be made. A second play through greatly facilitates piecing together the string of clues. Having the story presented thusly helps to create a feeling of total immersion. The world seems natural - it lives and breathes like a real Gothic hell and as you progress through the brilliantly designed levels, the world seems to naturally evolve and grow more more insane the more you discover.

For my first play through, never was I more terrified when i saw the telltale "boss arena" laying ahead in my path. I never knew what to expect and despite the plateau effect occurring mid-game for me, I never was looking forward to the frustration ahead. Despite the sinking feeling, trudging on and overcoming the bosses, especially when you get to the point of despair, gave me the best rush ever. Very rarely have I encountered a game that gets the endorphin's running that high; and for that, this, and other Souls' games are a special breed.

While Bloodborne is amazing in many areas, there are a few technical aspects that pop up. The frame rate can suffer and long load times are the two main issues. While I've never had the frame rate drops be problematic, it is possible it may be others; and as for the loading times, it's annoying, but really only a nitpick; and really, any issue that is apparent is just that: a nitpick. Bloodbrone is by far the best PS4 game to date and may be for some time.
