Battle Brothers is like a school-yard bully. This video game brute will do it’s very best to break you. It will tell you that you suck. Then it will aggressively inform you that your mum will be performing some sexual favours on it whilst giving you a wedgie in front of the rest of the class. But stick up to this bully, impress it with your resolve and maybe you’ll find that it’ll be your best friend. Perhaps, eventually, as close as a brother. The question is, do you have the commitment to get there? If the answer is yes, then you’ll ultimately - after far too much graft - find a deep and comprehensive strategy RPG. Just be prepared to have to stick with it, as this bully really hates you.

Battle Brothers is a dense tactical RPG that would really benefit from a more explicit tutorial. It's a hard game to get into but I found my time with it to be tense and rewarding. Preparation before each battle feels crucial and most of the decisions I took felt weighty. Combat is ultimately where most of your money is made and, whilst your brothers are expendable, escaping with a clean bill of health can be satisfying. Presentation is hardly spectacular and it can be clumsy at expressing a ton of information, but there's a compelling game here.

The combat mechanics, customization, and replayability make this a great option for those looking for a challenging tactical RPG. It’s an immersive mercenary sim that will have lovers of the genre hooked immediately with it’s low-power, medieval fantasy setting. Just know that this is not a casual gaming experience and newcomers will have a steep learning curve to contend with to really enjoy the game. Additionally, the game works much better on PC by design. Battle Brothers can be a great game, but only if the player is willing to push through its high barrier of entry.
