Got mixed feelings about this game.

On the plus side, it's faster-paced than the original. No more too long conversations at the cafe or in Wayne Enterprises. However, the original did a better job of juggling the characters and storylines. Here, there is too much going on and too many characters. A character or story element will be gone too long and forgotten. Like the first game,

Like the first game, the story tries some radical changes from the original Batman mythos, and like the first game I admire them for trying something different, but feel they stray too far at points. This game focuses a lot more on Bruce Wayne the person, which I felt was done pretty well, but was disappointed that you couldn't be Batman that often.

As for the story options in this, a lot of the choices rely on moral ambiguity. Unfortunately, they do this too often and it gets old after a while. The game also relies way too often on choices that please one character and upset the other. I really liked what they did in chapter five. Most games of this type have divergent pathways but still follow a general storyline. Here, the entire story has two completely different storylines it can go based on your actions.

The cell-shaded computer animation looks great. The developers seemed to have learned their lesson from the first game and they're no new characters with unusually thick necks. The voice acting cast do a great job. Lastly, the action sequences all impress.

As much as I've discussed this game's weaknesses, I'd still probably get the next one that they will probably make. The game's not perfect, but it's... Well, I guess "interesting" is as good a word as any..

You had some choice in what kind of a Batman you wanted to be and I liked that personally, at the end of the game it told you how brutal or how merciful you were. If I remember correctly I was somewhere in mid 90’s of being a merciful Batman. Enough about season 1, season 2 (The Enemy Within) is all about maintaining relationships which on its surface sounds interesting but everything ended up being boiled down to make a decision and one person will be happy by it and another person will be unhappy with it. Most decisions end up feeling black and white.

    Game Genre

    Graphic-Adventure

    Story

The strength of the game is the story, as I mentioned before it is a little predictable and I was kind of wishing they would have gone a little bolder, take some risks like they did with season 1. It is a fun Batman story but comparing it to season 1, its a weaker Batman story.

    Favorite Character

The best part of these Telltale Batman games is, they’re more focused on Bruce Wayne than they are Batman and I like that. Bruce Wayne himself is an interesting character that is rarely explored because it’s less exciting. Look at the Arkham games, those are 100% Batman games where this game is probably 60% Bruce Wayne which I am a very big fan of.

    Puzzles

Yes, Telltale goes back to their roots a little bit and this game does have some interesting puzzles. The downside is, most of the puzzles are in the first couple of episodes and then after that, the game has a major tonal shift.

    Gameplay

If you’ve never played a Telltale game its a pretty simple formula. It’s like sitting down and playing an interactive movie. Most conversations you can chose what the character will say next.

Sometimes you get to chose what the character is going to do next. 2 situations arise in the city, obviously you can only take care of one. You chose what fire you will be putting out so to speak.

The final major game mechanic of the game is the combat itself. It’s serviceable but not very exciting. It’s done through button prompts and quick time events. It looks cinematic but it’s not the most exciting to do yourself.

    Bosses

Kind of sorta. There are kind of bosses but a game like this isn’t built for bosses. It’s more about the story. Narratively there are some major figures but there are traditional boss battles.

    Music/Sound Design/Voice Acting

Another major strength of this game is the voice acting. For a game like this to work, the voice acting has to be great and it is. I have no complaints and all of the voice actors did a phenomenal job.

I didn’t mention this anywhere in the review but there are no mechanical issues. I think that’s a first for Telltale. The game ran flawlessly. I was shocked, no frame rate issues. It didn’t crash.

A lot of things were carried over from season 1, but a lot of the good was just thrown aside…
I felt that season 1 had a nice balance of batman and Bruce Wayne... here in the enemy within the story is very Bruce Wayne heavy..
So there are no moments of planning and executing like in season one which was probably my favorite part... there is only 1 moment of linking items to events, and there is little to no detective work…
this season is very lazy feeling compared to the first though it does run miles better, for the first time in telltale history I ran into 0 hiccups..
This time it’s a bunch of quick time events with great fighting scenes and dialog choices... this is clearly the final season telltale will be doing with batman so they attempt to go out with a bang and throw as many villains in here as possible..
This is very suicide squad feeling…
and you as Bruce Wayne goes undercover and joins them... this leads to tons of dilemma as the story plays out while you try to protect your code and come off as a bad guy at the same time...
I felt the internal struggle… so the story telling here is actually pretty great... full of twists and turns and dilemmas…
Though I feel like episode 1 and 5 were the only really great moments for the story.. The middle 3 with the whole suicide squad thing going on is just a little too shallow for me... there are interesting characters that you don’t get to spend enough time with.. they just feel a bit wasted… thinking back it’s hard to even remember what happened in those episodes…
Batman The enemy Within is a really solid and good telltale game..
It makes you stop and think… its constantly surprising you… all its missing is emotion and connection to its characters…
I found myself only really connected to the characters from the first season and that’s only because of how great that season did with character development... it carried over to this one..
If you hop in here by the end you’ll feel a connection to no one…
Your enjoyment of this season really does rely on you having played through season 1…
I give Batman: The Enemy Within

Broken, glitchy, garbage. Scenes constantly forget to focus on the character talking, that's if they even remember to populate the character model, odd clipping short of dialogue, low res textures that don't always load. I only paid $5 for this and the 1st game and still feel I was ripped off. If you haven't been duped by now, don't buy this at any cost.

Improves on the first season and brings a new twist to the Batman world. Old characters get new winkles. As a long time fan I had fun seeing interactions that I have never seen in the Batman world before. Made the game a lot of fun in that respect.

Sometimes Telltale gets criticized for not having a big enough change in your choices (and sometimes that's a fair point). I'm happy to say

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This edition of Batman Telltale is engaging to a point, but sloppy writing undermines what could have been worth replaying.

What "The Enemy Within" does well, it does very well. On a macro-scale, just like its predecessor, it gives no easy choices at pivotal moments and there's this feeling that you're playing the game "wrong." No matter what you do in the early episodes, it seems that the situation always devolves either because of or in spite of those choices. And that's what makes it engaging. Dominoes should continue to fall and put the hero behind the 8-ball. Still, because it's Telltale, Batman will still emerge with a hard-fought (but high-cost) victory. The arc is what makes it fun.

Unlike the first game, though, the writing gets lazy and haphazard. Simple things like going to look for some blood samples that might have been left behind at a certain crime scene. You get there with your partner, and first thing you're inclined to click is this open box of what looks like it might have contained vials. So, you check it out and the writing goes something like this: "The vials are gone! Our adversary got to them first! Let's look around." Like, What? It would not have been difficult to say something more like, "The vials are gone! Our adversary got to them first! Maybe we can figure out where they might have taken them. Let's look around."

Batman gets his butt kicked in this game. A lot. Like Bane throws him through a wall that includes a steel beam, but he's back in action less than 24 hours later. He takes rebar through the side. He wraps things up in a matter of hours with the help of miracle pain killers. It's a bit much.

My story included leaving a certain character's daughter behind in the Batcave while Batman went to Ace Chemicals alone. Then, at a pivotal moment, mere minutes after we last checked in with her in the cave, she shows up at Ace Chemicals to reveal a critical plot point. Rather than feel the gravity of the twist, I was thinking, "How the hell did she get there so fast?"

I like how Telltale takes LOTS of creative license with what's considered canon. Building a relationship with John Doe/Joker is probably the high point of the branching storylines. Maybe, just maybe, you can sculpt him into a reluctant hero, rather than the supervillain that your subconscious knows is inevitable.

Lots of brass in this saga, too. Jim Gordon, Alfred, John Doe/Joker and Catwoman are all back, of course, but now we also have Bane, Mr. Freeze, Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller and her Agents, and the Riddler. The voice acting is mostly good and helps take your attention off how bad some of the writing is at points. Several storylines seem to disappear off the map, which sort of point to a sequel, but the final choice you make in the game makes it seem like it's over (that and -- BIG SPOILER -- by the end of the game, just about everyone knows your secret identity).

There's been recent speculation of a third season, but as I recall, Season 1 wrapped up with a nice little bow. This one, you're not sure what happens to certain characters at all. At least not the avenues I played.

The combat is very forgiving, so I only failed a couple times and failed a couple of puzzles because I did not know what to do (repairing the EMP...I didn't see what I was supposed to be looking at...so, the flow of the story isn't interrupted too often. There was a weird bug I encountered in Episode 2 where Bruce gets in a car, it was evident that John Doe was driving somewhere, but the windshield was completely opaque, so it was like they weren't moving. Anyone else encounter this?

However, there were some VERY humorous moments. Particularly in the grooming of Joker. I told him that heroes don't kill. There was the normal "Joker will remember that," which is a prompt you see throughout the game for various characters. Then, just a bit later, Joker wants to kill someone again, and you remind him that heroes don't kill. The prompt read: "Joker totally didn't remember that..."

This game is good for trophy hogs like me because you get about 30 of them in about 10 hours of playtime. Try doing that in a Final Fantasy game... ;)

I really like the 2 seasons of this game but if one day, a season 3 comes out, I hope there will be all the other important characters and enemies that relate to the history of Batman inside: as allies: Nightwing, Robin / Damian Wayne, Batgirl / the oracle: Barbara Gordon, Red Robin / Tim Drake, Azrael / Jean-Paul Valley Jr or Michael Washington Lane (who would be an enemy at the start of the game then an ally in the sequel like Catwoman and we would decide if he should go at GCPD or if he can stay free like in Batman: Arkham Knight), Jack Ryder, Aaron Cash and his agents in addition to Batman / Bruce Wayne, Catwoman / Selina Kyle (if we choose to tell Amanda Waller to release her in episode 5 of season 2 after choosing to trust the Joker / John Doe in the 4), Alfred Pennyworth (if we convince him to stay by deciding to abandon Batman at the end of episode 5 of season 2), Tiffany Fox (if we choose her second chance under surveillance after she killed the Riddler / Edward Nashton (his real identity or Nigma), James "Jim" Gordon, Renee Montoya and the rest of the GCPD, Amanda Waller, Iman Avesta, his agents: Vernon Blake and agent Patrick (if we save them by agreeing to agreeing to answer the 2 riddles of the Riddler in episode 1 of season 2), Roger Harrison (if we save him from Bane instead of Willy Deever in episode 5 of season 2 after choosing to trust John) and the rest of the Agency, Regina Zellerbach (if we choose to trust John in episode 4 of season 1), the inspector Harvey Bullock (if we choose to trust John in episode 4 of season 2), the fire chief: Raymond Underhill and his men.

And as enemies: Poison Ivy / Pamela Lillian Isley, Solomon Grundy / Butch Gilzean, Black Mask / Roman Sionis, Simon Stagg, Hugo Strange, Deathstroke / Slade Wilson, Deadshot / Floyd Lawton, Hush / Thomas Elliot, Firefly / Garfield Lynns, Deacon Joseph Blackfire, Professor Pyg / Lazlo Valentin, the Scarecrow / Jonathan Crane, Man-Bat / the Dr. Kirk Langstrom, Mad Hatter / Jervis Tetch, Killer Croc / Waylon Jones, Calendar Man, Clayface / Basil Karlo (his real identity), Matt Hagen, Preston Payne and Sondra Fuller, Red Hood / Jason Todd, Talia Al Ghul (as I wrote for Azrael), his father Ras Al Ghul and the rest of the assassin league.

Batman: The Enemy Within is an improvement on the first season in nearly every way, with enhanced combat sequences, a strong presentation and voice cast and an engrossing relationship between Batman and the Joker that produces some memorable and heart-wrenching moments that feel well-justified by the player’s choices up to those moments.
