Jun 7, 2016The Atelier games are smarter than almost anyone gives them credit for, and Atelier Sophie is no different. The gentle coming of age narrative, coupled with the pastoral setting and likable ensemble cast, make for a very fine start to a new trilogy (we assume) in Gust’s marquee franchise.
-
Jul 7, 2016While it may not have reached perfection yet, the Atelier series is getting close. Each new title offers a substantive change to the core mechanics, so vets will encounter something new and new players can easily jump in. I seem to say this in every review but it remains true—this is good as JRPG design gets, and I can’t wait to see what the developers have in store next.
-
Jun 7, 2016Surprising, fun, and challenging, Atelier Sophie is a must own in the PlayStation 4 collection.
-
Jun 7, 2016Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a breath of fresh air in the genre of JRPG. This game features a mundane story but in a fantasy world where the dreams of the characters are more important than the plot.
-
Jun 7, 2016Atelier Sophie is a wonderful game, and if you’re a new player like me, it’s a great way to get yourself hooked on the rest of the franchise.
-
Jun 9, 2016Gust’s first foray on the PS4 with their flagship Atelier title is a rousing success, and even though I lament the removal of the time limit mechanic from the series, it still proves one of the strongest entries the franchise has had to date, and one of the best RPGs available on the PS4.
-
Jun 12, 2016Atelier Sophie offers a fresh start for the franchise on the PS4 and for a new trilogy. Some design changes from previous entries made this one more enjoyable for me, so if you were on the fence before, give this entry a closer look.
-
Jul 9, 2016Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book marks the franchise PlayStation 4 debut and one of the must play JRPGs on the system, despite its flaws.
-
Jun 26, 2016A relatively simple yet somewhat deep game. Albeit it doesn’t harbor a really challenging difficulty nor a complex story, it offers an easygoing narrative in which its gameplay rewards aspects like exploration and collections of items for alchemy recipes over other more common in the genre like action, narrative and complex controls.
-
Jun 7, 2016Quotation forthcoming.
-
Jun 7, 2016Not the jump forward I was expecting for this series, but a light and entertaining RPG nonetheless.
-
Jun 7, 2016Equipped with interesting characters and vast environments to explore, there is much more here than executing recipes and filling that mysterious book.
-
Jun 7, 2016I could go on about more of the refinements I enjoyed, such as the weather system affecting what items you find and the rumors becoming much more useful and easy to track down, but my main takeaway remains the same: Atelier Sophie improves on an already fun and engaging formula.
-
Jun 7, 2016Atelier Sophie: Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is an episode of the Atelier series with a deep respect for the classical mechanics that adds interesting new features to expand the experience as much as possible.
-
Jun 23, 2016Entertaining JRPG adventure with tons of missions and minigames to do and a turned based combats.
-
Jun 9, 2016All in all, Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a solid if unexceptional addition to the franchise.
-
Jun 8, 2016If you do not let the graphics get the best of you, Atelier Sophie is a great game to spend time with, full of cute girls and explosives.
-
Jun 8, 2016Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book isn't going to win any awards for best RPG of the year, but it's still a good time and gives you a couple dozen hours of enjoyable playtime.
-
Jun 7, 2016Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a valid entry in the long-running series. It sports some novelties, some of them are good (for example the day/night cycle), others not so much, like a sort of step behind in the battle system, but in the end it will please fans of the saga and could be a good start for newcomers, although it can be a little too sparse and inconsistent at times.
-
Jun 24, 2016Atelier Sophie has a target audience in mind here, and while it offers a compelling crafting with alchemy, the narrative lacks much intrigue to keep things moving.
-
Jun 24, 2016Atelier Sophie is the perfect definition of an atypic JRPG, with a strong Japanese art style, a narration full of dialogues, a limited battle-system and a linear development of the characters.
-
Jun 10, 2016Atelier Sophie represents a new identity for the series. A self-pilot episode, that tries to capture the interest of a new fanbase. Good, but we would have preferred a more challenging game.
-
Jun 9, 2016Quotation forthcoming.
-
Jun 7, 2016This episode doesn't take too many risks, so it doesn't offer any surprises or relevant additions. Even though it's good, we hope it's a transitional episode to prepare for what is next to come.
-
Jun 7, 2016Outside of the implementation of its core mechanics, Atelier Sophie represents a small step for the series rather than the leap I was expecting when it arrived on the PlayStation 4.
-
Jun 7, 2016Fans will eat it up and for people who have been curious about the Atelier series but are uncertain about what game to start with, this PS4 debut is a new character with a new story and appears to be a good starting point.
-
Jun 7, 2016For anyone seeking out an RPG they can just play for weeks, Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a solid choice, but for each of its highlights, it suffers a misgiving.
-
Jun 7, 2016Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a more relaxed entry in the series, and I enjoyed that particular aspect of it. Unfortunately, it’s also becoming clear just how little the series has grown over a whopping 17 entries, a condition likely due to the annual nature of its sequels.
-
Jun 25, 2016Overall, Atelier Sophie is a mixed bag with many ideas that will hopefully be refined in future installments of the Mysterious series.
-
Jun 10, 2016Quotation forthcoming.
-
Jun 8, 2016Atelier Sophie isn’t at its best when doing particularly anything. It may only appeal to an alcove of anime fans, being so jovial you can practically hear it wishing you a merry Christmas. The broad stroke of the content can be experienced with any other JRPG, and better so. But if the home-bound, alchemic twist appeals, you may have a game worth persisting for.
-
Jun 7, 2016If you've played other titles in the series, then this entry will feel like it adds very little to the experiences that you've already had, while leaving a much blander taste.
