It is really more like Witcher 3 game than Assassin's Creed, still enjoyable. The plot was okay, the gameplay was okay. The atmosphere of Egypt was very good

I feel quite repetitive at the end of the game and while I was doing the platinium. Last but not least some places of the map was empty. It was not necessary to add.

Firstly, it is not and Assassin's Creed game. Really boring RPG experience and free roam. After playing Witcher 3, I can say that "It is totally trash."

    Cons
    - Assassin's Creed game where pressing the assassination button takes five percent of health from a sleeping enemy that you stab in the neck….. lmao ok
    - the upgrade system is clearly heavily slanted towards being annoying when it comes to farming for materials, as it was this game that introduced Time Saver microtransactions into the franchise
    - the side quests are as generic as they come
    - the combat is a shakeup to the franchise, but spending two minutes hacking away on sponge enemies is beyond annoying
    - Layla is a boring cardboard cutout that does not carry the modern day stuff at all

For years the series got dogpiled on for not changing its mechanics in any significant way. I unfortunately got the Ubisoft brain damage early in life so I enjoyed the mediocre yearly releases while making fun of FIFA players for enjoying their yearly copy and pasted releases.

Assassin's Creed Origin is the game that decided to change that story, and they succeeded. What I mean is they succeeded in changing stuff but they utterly failed in capturing what made the series loved and fun to play.

Starting with the good stuff, the story is actually a solid revenge plot against a faceless organization. Bayek and Aya feel real and both of them carry you through the story of their revenge up until the founding of the brotherhood.

The world is massive and allows for early exploration, letting you knock out most of the map in the early game. Some of the vistas are breathtaking, like the pyramids in Giza and the various temples you visit.

Now the bad. In a series called Assassin's Creed how do you mess up the ASSASSINATION mechanic. The level system makes it so that if you walk into an area that has enemies with higher levels than you, trying to assassinate them does like five percent of their health. You could stab them out of stealth, use your hidden blade to stab them in the neck four times, and they still get hit for five percent health. The level based assassination sucks.

The combat went from showing off the skill of the assassins in allowing you to take on hordes of enemies, to now where you are forced to take a nap as you hack away at health sponges. Wow, you changed stuff, but is it for the better?

Ubisoft was never shy about scummy microtransactions, as anybody who played ACII on release had to deal with the Sequence 12, 13 scumbaggery. This game's upgrade system was designed banking on your frustration, where you buy Ubisoft's ''generous'' Time Saver microtransactions, giving you the materials needed so you don't need to farm them.

Origins is the least bad game in the modern trilogy yet that is not saying much as it does not reach even the worst of the old style games.

It's a great setting, but it's a bad AC game, it lost it's identity. I didn't love what thode games were before, but it's sad to see it become so uninspired, even if it is functional, and fun for a while. It gets old fast though, and although it's one of the best AC games, it's the nail in the AC coffin. It's fine in just about everything, the setting is good though.

It is annoying because if ur too underleveled, u have no chance against the enemies in stronger Locations. I don't like the forced grind in this game. The Map has many question marks on it which show u an interesting spot so you don't have to really explore by yourself which i personally don't like but its really a matter of opinion. My god, this game is badly written/directed!

At first, around 30h into the game, I was pretty happy with the game, world building, graphics, etc. At that time, for me, the game was a solid 8/10. I was so wrong.

Everything in this game happens so fast, so randomly. Before you even meet a character, that character is already dead/dying, or betraying you (which is incredibly predictable).
For example, you watch some gruesome death of some child.... the kid you met 5 minutes earlier. The game lets you 'lightly' know that now is the time for sadness (slow-mo, sad music, crying mother). Sometimes the loading time of the game is longer than the exposition of characters.

You feel zero attachment, zero emotion. That one scene, quest, reminded me of the prologue to The Last of Us. All it took was a few minutes of good acting, brief exposition and a subtle backstory, to make you feel something, to feel the suffering of a parent who just lost a child. There is not even one such moment in Assassins' Creed Origins. Wasted potential.

For most of the game, I felt zero attachment to any of the characters.
In some places, Bayek had quite interesting tantrums, expressing some emotions.

Unfortunately, after 100+ hours, I can't recall even one interesting character.
Side quests could have been non-existent, boring, repetitive. Horrifyingly badly acted.
A character outside the Animus... for most of the time, I didn't even remember that she existed at all. The entire story line could have ceased to exist, and it wouldn't have changed anything in Bayek's world.

This game is a drag. By the end, instead of being interested in how it would end, I was bored and waiting for it to finally end.

The last game in the Assassins' Creed series that I played was Unity. Pretty cool, visually gorgeous, realistic characters and their stories. Here I was dying of boredom and annoyance.

Every now and then, when a new game in the series comes out, I think to myself that maybe it's worth a try, maybe it will be OK this time...?
This is definitely the last game in the Assassins' Creed series that I will ever play. Unfortunately, the series died along with Ezio, as did my interest in the Creed.

Expand

So as a long time Assassin's Creed fan, I left the franchise a for a bit after a few disappointing instalments. First things first this game takes the series in a new direction, so there are a multitude of changes.
The combat tries to be new and fresh whilst mimicking the style of say dark souls or horizon. I don't really have a problem with the new combat except for one thing. The lack of a counter system removes the feeling of being a BA. Like in AC4 when you would wait patiently for the enemy to attack and manage to kill three people with a parry in absolute style. That's replaced with a finisher system, basically when an enemy is low on health you do a cinematic finishing blow, but it just doesn't feel as epic.
The story is the origins of the assassins and a story of revenge. I enjoyed the plot and found it rewarding in the sense of seeing where it all began. However they have significantly reduced the modern storyline. Which in my opinion is a shame, but to fair they really didn't know where to take it after the conclusion of Desmond's story in AC3. I mean look at AC4 you're a nobody walking around Abstergo industries, who accomplishes almost nothing. I have begun to wonder if they started reducing it to appease gamers who complained about being taken out of the animus or if its really just because they just don't know what to do with it.
I don't mind the new rpg system, but what i do mind in the fact that the game forces you to grind out side missions in order to continue the main game. I'm all for side missions but they should be something you want/choose to do, not mandatory to complete the game. Look at skyrim or fallout, those games let you choose if you do side quests and doesn't punish you for not doing them. Another thing I was trying to grind so I could finish the game and a level 35 mission would literally give me the same amount of experience as a quest ten levels underneath it. I get that ubisoft has never really made an rpg before but how tf do you make a mistake like this in the year 2017?
All in all I enjoyed the game but it could have been better.

The game tries to evolve with the times but it's still a Ubisoft AC game. Climb towers, kill enemies, do busywork side quests e.c.t. There is new content such as a new combat system and a eagle scout in lieu of Eagle sense. But this is a situation where Ubisoft try to please old fans and try to get new ones, but in the end, underwhelm both sides. If you don't like AC games you won't like this and vice-versa.

The strongest aspect of the series and indeed in Origins is the visual historical tourism these games offer. Visiting the ancient city of Alexandria to gazing at the large pyramids in Giza is where Origins shines. the graphics do a large part to help with this and really make the world feel alive and beautiful.

There are just too many boring repetitive quests. The cut-scenes are also boring and look out of date / place. The graphics are great but this world is just lacking some more fun stuff to do. A GTA style AC game could work really well, but it needs more time and more budget. I doubt I will finish this one.

The game feels like it suffers from -too- many things to do. The world is overly blown up to do many small meaningless things. Whomever was the UI designer clearly wanted people to go blind by placing white and light gold markers on sand coloured tilesets. Please tell me what the purpose of icons on a map are if you can never see them.
The combat potential has so many things you can do. In terms of stealth, brawling, luring enemies, traps, fires, etc. Unfortunately, most of it is never made use of. That being said, the previous track record of trying to make use of them was not very fun and felt like using my brain too much compared to any other point in the game where I can turn it off and mindlessly check off completion boxes.

The story has a couple good parts but the majority is forgettable with characters I still cannot tell who is who. The side quests are somewhat interesting, but generally not so much,. The main character Bayek is someone I felt I grew to understand, whereas I grew apart from Aya, the second PC character. In the end I felt she stole the spotlight from the character I put 60 hours into. Even if her character was more fleshed out and written I don't think that would improve anything since in general she seems to be a bland archetype who keeps playing missions I don't enjoy.
Then there's the RL story in the game which doesn't make sense. You're about to be killed so you equivocally lay down and sleep and wait for it. What kind of lame assassin does that. Cut to the end game and you are able to leave to somewhere else so what do you do? You just again... lay down and sleep. It doesn't make sense and it's disjointed.
Those mechanisms in-game where you hear people talking about the future or time travel take eons to finish speaking. It's like their instructions were to speak as humanly possibly and they lock the character to the radius around the mechanism so you can't run away. It's so slow I managed to lose concentration on what they're even talking about.

Then there's the combat and climbing. The general movement of the game suffers from a noticeable input lag. Causing for a lot of delayed responses. There are a lot of times where I will be standing around on a small step and not want to be. Sometimes I'll randomly jump off to the side when climbing and die. There's times where I will auto target the wrong enemy when attacking because it's based on enemy proximity and not where I'm trying to attack. There's many things that add up to an experience overall feels unclean.

There are SO. MANY. moments in the game where it feels cringy to watch. Like the internet's anime memelord thought of some of the coolest moments from their favourite anime and decided that assassin's and the main character should be able to do some of these things for no reason or context other than it was cool in their favourite anime. Watching it made me think that the assassin's are lame.

The entire game seems like a payoff for the last 3 minute cutscene and spoilers, but your character doesn't really matter. There's no sense of validation whatsoever. Kind of related but I feel like there were some major feminists on the writing and quest design teams.

Ill analyse its Story, Storytelling, Environment and Gameplay in order to show you how I got to those conclusions:
    1) Story-
Assassin's Creed Origins plot is one of its strongest sides, though not as deep and well written as I would like it to be its still stand strong with interesting dramatic plot and well written dialogs.
Unfortunately this apply mostly to the main plot, most of the side quests are rather dull with not much depth to it. Story Score- 8/10.
    2) Storytelling-
This is where the game begins to crumble. Origin's world is huge yet mostly empty or filled with pointless repetitive tasks such as hunting animals or clearing a bandits camp.
Even though, the main story cutscenes and the voice actors ability to play make the main story line very immersive and interesting throughout the game. Storytelling Score- 6/10.
    3) Environment- Graphics in this games is pretty amazing, though not the best one Iv seen on that year, its still one of greatest for its time period. Design is decent, you have magnificent temples, plenty detailed weapons and armors and important npcs look, act and behave differently, yet lots of the stuff are repetitive in a pretty lazy copy-paste kind of thing, many camps are identical, many npcs are the same and lots of the cities aren't that impressive (though there are some outstanding designing in the game in some parts). Environment score- 7/10.
    4) Gameplay-
Mechanics of the games are basically a poor copy the Witcher's mechanic, is some ways its great, for example in the quest layout or the inventory of the character. yet in other places like combat it offers far less options in compare to The Witcher 3, therefore its getting pretty repetitive very fast. Gameplay Score- 6/10.

    Total Score- 6.75/10 or 67.5/100.
Verdict- The game is good, for the open world fans it would be enjoyable in most moments, and there is even a decent plot so if you don't like the repetitive rpg you can always focus on main quests and still get a good Assassin's Creed game. I would recommend it to you if you like open world rpg games, or if you are a fan of the Assassin's Creed game series. It think most of the people in these fandoms wouldn't find that game a masterpiece, yet still enjoy most of it (or at lest most of the hours they put into it).

Enjoyed the game overall; I feel like the atmosphere is split as it both looks aesthetically amazing whilst having a lack of ambiance which clashes with the visuals and ends up breaking the immersion.
I felt like the story was relatively strong; I loved the character of Bayek and felt for him and his struggle with both the death of his son and the slowly deteriorating relationship with his wife (Aya) as he fights for vengeance. However, venturing from the main quest-line leads to a lot of weak side quests (there are a few interesting ones but even a broken clock is right twice a day) and seeing as these are unavoidable it makes for frequent grinds as you level Bayek so that you may progress to the next part of the story.
The overall narrative in the present day story is very sparse here and can almost be entirely avoided if you choose to with only a handful of moment throughout the game that don't last longer than 15 minutes at most which players who aren't here for that will appreciate. The more annoying segments are the phases where you will play as Aya, playing so many hours as Bayek leveling all his skills and aquiring the weapons and bows you wish to use makes it all the more frustrating when its all stripped away and tou have to play as someone new; I felt myself wanting them to be over and this soured the story for me and left me uninterested as these sections last quite some time nearing the end of the main quest-line.
I played this game after Odyssey and found it a refreshingly realistic version which i found refreshing as i wasn't able to destroy hoards of enemies with a mass of superhuman abilities which made sneak more important in my play style which i came to thoroughly enjoy.

--- You journey through this big world but encounter no new enemies, no new animals. Forts you capture get bigger in size and amount of enemies, but pose no new challenges.
--- You quickly understand tactics of finding chests, infiltrating forts and fighting enemies and this tactics does not change the whole game. As i said, no new enemies, no new threats, challenges doom you to doing all the process in repetitive way.
--- There is no visual change in the world from your actions, starting from no visual change in settlement where you killed a tyrant that sucked all resourses and instilled fear in the city and following forts that you capture killing all the soldiers and sometimes even helping rebels to capture it once again packed with Roman soldeirs and rebels in cages next time you drive by it. There is not a single region that you can free from oppression. You kill hundreds and they still roam the streets (much like Far Cry 5).
--- The highest difficulty still mostly relies on level comparison instead of actual difficulty.

Despite all the things I did not like in the game at this point I am still ready to say it is a good game if it wasn't for one crucial thing that I realized suddenly at the end of the campaign: there is next to none interesting story missions, close to the end there is an action packed war mission, but apart from it I can't remember a single quest. You either retrieve prisoner from the cage in the camp or crouch in a secured location and assassinate target. And there are no special target conditions, you just hide in the bushes, or grab the ledge and jump down on the enemy. That is it. I am afraid that I don't have time or desire to play games like this one anymore. It is not that I like story-centered games or don't like aesthetics, I just like varied games, games where there's some meaning to upgrading your equipment, exploration etc.

Speaking of the main quest line, the main story is mediocre at best, with a boring protagonist and even less interesting side characters. I can't find myself getting attached to these characters and what they go through as much as I was able to in past games. Getting interrupted periodically throughout the game to focus on the "modern day" story is also quite annoying and breaks immersion. The AI is often buggy and don't act as they should, especially the ones you are required to follow to complete certain quests. Customization is present, however it leaves little to be desired in my opinion. Overall, the game isn't bad, but it's definitely not one of the best Assassin's Creed installments. 7/10 at the most.

This is my main complaint: the difficulty and, to say something else, too much blood for my taste. The Discovery mode is a good thing if you're interested in history, so you can go there from time to time although I know most of the people will skip this. I don't know, I'm really sad to rate this game for its difficulty because it would probably deserves a 9 or 10. It's a pity. Lucky me I just borrowed this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are many wonderful things about this game, and as a software developer myself, I am in awe of a team that can make such a large complex software project work so well. It's a spectacularly good effort. Having said that though, I feel the design of the game as a game lacks quite a lot, and decreased my enjoyment. In this review I will go into some detail about the parts that I enjoyed and those that I did not.

I have never played any Assassin's Creed game before, so I didn't bring many preconceived ideas. I did expect there would be skulking in shadows and assassination. I also admit that I am not a skilful gamer, but I expect that most games are within my range of capabilities. When I played Horizon: Zero Dawn, I chose an easy mode, and then the game was so easy as to be boring, so I played Origins on Normal (with exceptions as will be noted below).

First, the positives. The world is beautiful! I completely love the way the Origins team has taken what is known about Ancient Egypt and reconstructed it and painted in nice colours. It's just wonderful. I love that there are so many different human models, and so many different actions they do, and so many different environments they interact with.

The quests are generally good. As I find main quests in games to be the worst, I prefer to do side quests. However the side quests were strongly related to the main quest, and tended to expand on the story, rather than being some random radiant nonsense. I feel the side quests did a great job of explaining what was happening in the world to the people who weren't the famous people. I also loved the scroll puzzles, and sorta like the revenge quests even though they were a bit out of place.

I loved the transport! In most games with horses, the horses are just too hard to control to bother with (looking at you, Breath of the Wild) so I either run places or fast travel. In Origins I regularly summoned my camel, or stole a felucca, or used whatever was at hand. The vehicles were a success.

I loved the birds! I loved how when you walk into a flock of herons, they flew away, and you could count on them doing it for other humans as well. I would very much like to see a stealth game which placed more emphasis on interactions with the world - skittish animals, creaking stairs, visible shadows, audible grunts - rather than just "push the stealthy button".

Which brings me to the bits I didn't like. The stealthy button didn't work most of the time! So many times I would poke my head into somewhere to have a look at what was happening, and be instantly noticed and end up in a melee. I adjusted from taking stealth-based abilities to taking melee ones just so I could keep up. Being stealthy didn't seem to be a viable option.

Furthermore, Bayek's parkour didn't help. The guy can't walk in a straight line, he's forever leaping up on something. He can't use a ladder to save himself, preferring to jump up onto a wall or a box, and he can't go down. I spent a good proportion of my time just trying to get Bayek go where I wanted him instead of somewhere stupid. It's really hard to sneak around fort when any intrusion messes with your movement.

The combat was okayish, but the lock-on functionality was way too eager to unlock itself. When you're badly wounded and staggering, unable to hit anyone, and Bayek insists on standing in a brazier rather than fighting or escaping, the game really is at its worst. And then while you're pressing all the buttons, the game decides you want to take a photo. NO! World's stupidest feature!

Much has been said about the game's level system, which was about the worst level system I've ever played. For an open world game, there's a too narrow window of things to do that are viable and interesting at your level.

Picking up loot doesn't work very well. There is click loot and hold loot, and you have to watch to see which the game is currently offering you. Very annoying. Then what you picked up vanishes so quickly you probably missed it anyway. Which is OK, because nothing you pick up is of much interest. The weapons are the most interesting, and they're so strongly tied to the level system that they're never of much interest.

And finally, the main quest. Like HZD and BotW and even Skyrim, the game loves its main quest and throws all of its tricks at you while you do it, by which I mean painful boss fights and dull cut scenes. Those are why I avoid the main quests. I like Investigation areas and Eradication areas, I don't need a fight I can't win to make the game interesting. Act IV of Origins was painfully dull, and I tried to avoid it.

It distresses me that game designers can make lovely and interesting things that I will do for hours, yet make the meaningful parts of their story so dull that I wander off to the kitchen instead. Origins may be a new direction for the AC franchise, but I wish in that regard they had chosen to lead rather than follow.

A long time ago, I was playing Assassin's Creed 1 for a couple of hours and Black Flag for a couple of more hours, but faded off from both due to boredom. After all this positive reviews, stating that this is kind of a refresh to the series, I thought I'd give it another try - maybe there is some joy in it - like I had with 150 hours in Witcher 3 or 70 hours with Horizon. But sadly: No, not - at - all. If you're like me and never got warm with the Ubisoft open worlds (the only game I have finished was Far Cry 3): This game has no different feeling to it than the others. In a nutshell:
    >> great graphics, although less detail work in comparison to other open world games
    >> awful storytelling
    >> bad character development and introduction (a grown man behaving like a 15 year old greenhorn)
    >> clunky and boring combat system
    >> lacking content in comparison to the size of the world
    >> no authentic feeling of ancient Egypt
    >> bugs
    >> Ubisoft-Club ingame promo

So, in conclusio: I will not finish the game too soon or maybe not at all. It is still entertaining for maybe 1-2 hours per week, but after 12 hours in the game nothing interesting happened and (I'm sorry) I can't even deal with this evil face old kid main character.

Like its sub title ORIGNIS, Assassin's Creed made a huge change in this title and starts a new era for the whole franchise. Changing is always good but one thing I really hate is that the RPG mechanise made EXP becoming everything in this game. If your enemy's level is higher than yours, you probably cannot assassin him.

Bayek seems to have the tiniest reach with his weapons, and the dodging/blocking attacks is slower than it could be. Customisation via weapons etc are a positive, and there's a wide variety of attacks relating to the different weapons used.

There's an abundance of content, including side missions with more depth than previous entries, showing the developers put more effort into this game, but the story-telling and writing aren't very memorable, nor compelling. Due to the levelling system, you need to complete much of these side stuff to continue on the main quest, which can get tedious and boring. Bayek (main character) is likeable and his story is based on a revenge hunt-them-down trope, with some hiccups on the road. You often play as his wife who is again, interesting. Yet, there is something rather cringey about this angry woman assassin in 49BC going around killing off famous militaristic figures and overpowering muscular Greek and Roman soldiers. I assume the writers believe such an adaptation a requirement in meeting present day political correctness standards. I mean, the second you load up the game Ubisoft hits you with a disclaimer of how 'this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.' Wow, thanks virtuous Ubisoft. You've anticipated the review criteria of Polygon! lol

But, graphics are not enough to make a game great. The story has some intriguing elements but I found myself skipping cutscenes and Aya in particular I found to be an annoying character with her obstinate obedience but that may be my subjectivity.

The gameplay and missions are where it gets interesting. They have attempted to move away from mechanics found in earlier AC games but it's like the mechanics are holding on by their fingertips. As a game about assassins, it should not be surprising that most missions seem to involve travelling to a location and assassinating a target, but this does not impede the onset of boredom. Furthermore, the level cap of 40 deterred me from doing any more missions than I had to. I see they raised this cap with DLC, but I really don't like paying for that kind of thing since I'm already tired of the game itself.

Despite an attempt at rejuvenating the series, AC: Origins still relies on familiar concepts and mechanics such as collecting items and open-worlds full of inane side quests as well as crafting and looting. It was the locations that probably intrigued me most and the impressive visuals made me want to continue exploring. I did get over 40 hours out of the game, so it's well worth it if you can get a good price; just don't expect to be blown away.

The one saving grace to this game is the open world. it's pretty incredible to look at. Too bad the game mechanics didn't match the attention to detail that the world was paid.

One last point - the move to a more RPG focused game hurt more than helped. It was half-assed when compared to actual RPG's like The Witcher or Skyrim. Overall, very disappointed with the end product here.

The big new fighting system is mostly a failure, better than the old ones, but just horrible. My thoughts playing this were always that the main focus of the devs were the animations looking cool and not the fighting actually being fun. Or even working properly. Most of the time you're not fighting the enemy but rather the camera.
The RPG mechanic is barely noticable, it mainly influences which missions you can and can't do so it does sort of guide you through the side missions and regions. THere's nothings really interesting in the equipment mechanics, just always switch to the better one when you get it. Really no point to this even existing.
This entire game shows that the Devs really shouldn't be trying anything new. This is just a half assed effort by an incompetent team that's more suited to putting out the same game every year than actually creating something. Ubisoft really has gone downhill.
