If you have about 6-8 hours of time and you want to solve a mystery while trying to avoid madness, then I’d say Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace is a good time.

If you can look past all of the issues plaguing Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, there are certainly worse games to spend a weekend with. Especially if you’re a fan of Lovecraftian horror, but steer clear of it if you’re somebody that asks of your 2021 gaming experiences to at least feel like you’re playing something made in the past fifteen years. Granted, I’ll be curious to see if this receives a sequel, as I do believe this series could become a sleeper hit. Stay tuned.

Less than two years since the last Lovecraft based game, the Nintendo Switch port of Call of Cthulhu, we have a new game based on the vast and influential works of the inmortal author. This Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace really embraces its board game origins, creating a mixture of exploration, puzle-solving, clue-gathering and turn-time combats. The story is good, but not too deep, and the mechanics and visuals show good ideas, fun ideas, but also a not enough budget to put’em all the right way. Another hit ’n miss Lovecraft game, but with a good atmosphere and pretty fun somehow.

Arkham Horror: Mother's Embrace presents quite a cool gameplay concoction but it doesn't execute any of its elements all that well. If its concept appeals to you then you might have some fun but it'll still be weighed down by its hard to ignore shortcomings.

Arkham board game fans will find little in this adaption that harkens back to the fantastic tabletop challenges. This could almost be a ‘my first turn-based tactics’ game, hampered by embarrassingly arbitrary puzzles, bad technical and vocal performances, and progress that provides meaningless penalties rather than rewards.
