For the nostalgic this may be a great game. The world design is wonderful, and the challenges you face many. Yes almost everything on this planet will kill you. The puzzles can be quite challenging.

That aside, I was disappointed with this game. The controls are very very difficult. It seems the developers wanted to make the controls as difficult as they possibly could to somehow make the game more difficult.

Another thing that bothered me was that there is no tutorial or description in the menu or in game to describe the finer points of moving your character in this strange world. For example, the significance of standing jumping is never explained. And it is very important since it allows you to jump over deadly obstacles easily. I would never have known if I hadn't looked up a guide online. This flaw earned me lots of cheap deaths in the beginning, making me repeat sections again and again. And speaking of cheap deaths, this game is full of them. Combining these cheap deaths, poor controls, and no explanation of how to actually control your character, I ended up taking much longer to finish the game than I could have (first time took me a few hours).

There isn't much replay value. Once you know the puzzles, you can easily finish this in 30 minutes.

I would pass on this game, unless you were born in the 80's like me and want to remember the old days.

I don't mean in it's presentation; I can stand old looking visuals and low-quality audio since this game IS 20-something years old. That's not the reason why this game hasn't aged well. The reasons why it hasn't aged well are it's clunky controls and insistence ion frustrating mechanics that make this feel less like a game and more like pulling your toenails out. The controls, in an attempt to make the character feel more realistic, are slow, clunky, and rather unresponsive. Slow in that it takes a while for your character to even think about moving his left big toe to begin walking. Clunky in that, in addition to the sluggishness of your character, movement is restricted to those that can only be done in real life. You can't jump twice your height; only about six or seven inches off the ground. Unresponsive in that sometimes your character will just decide to NOT move in the direction that you told him to, or sometimes not at all.

I feel that these could be forgiven if the gameplay was smooth and intuitive enough.

    NOPE.

Platforming is clunky, requiring pixel-perfect lands to continue without instantly dying. Combat, is twitch-based and requires you to time your shots carefully so that way you don't die instantly, all enemies have hidden moves that they don't show until you're right next to them that kill you instantly, all falls kill you instantly, water kills you instantly, you can run into a room and have no idea what's in the next screen and have whatever is in there kill you instantly. Did I mention the instant deaths in this game? And the worst part is that the game uses an extremely inconsistent checkpoint system where, at some points, you'll have to complete large, extremely difficult sections of the game because you accidentally mistimed your jump and fell into a pit and died instantly. All of this stuff can't hide that fact that these frustration measures are used to stretch a 45-minute game to around two to three hours in length.

Save your $8 ($10 on PC for some odd reason) and watch the Game Grumps fail miserably at it; it'll be INFINITELY more fun than going through it yourself.

I got my first computer in 1985. I may have played this game then. Or I may have dumped it for a good game.

Avoid this utter pile of crap. the controls are off. the puzzles are just bizzare and not fun. the story is just lifeless, well the whole game feels lifeless, its just boring, repepttive, and doesnt belong on a modern day gaming machine, maybe on the old ones where i can appreciate how good this game was but in todays age, its complete crap.

The controls are absolutely garbage. The game is otherwise fine, but is maybe 40min long or so. probably not worth it. A lot of better games out there.

When I first bought it, I had a really good feeling it was going to be an awesome game. And, as it turns out, it was! Sure, you're going to have frustrating deaths and the fact that the game is very short, but that won't stop you from replaying it again and again. You can also switch between original and new graphics and soundtrack. How cool is that? This game deserves an honest 8 out of 10.

My fav version so far is the snes one, since they put extra music which truly set the mood in some parts of the game.
This is a very cinematic game, and one of the first to do that, but also has very interesting gameplay, hit or miss sometime you'll die many times in a trial and error manner, never loosing the fun, you dont mind cause you're very interested about what comes next! love the sequel too, shame they didn't included it in this anniversary release since the game is very short. The sequel is a very good game and gives it a proper closure in my opinion, only released for sega cd, so get an emulator and play it!

This game is one of the favorite games of metal gear creator Koshima, play it and see why.

The controls... omg the controls. They are SO BAD, they make Alone in the dark and Flashback feel like free flowing lovely 2019 platformers. Miserable. Wanted to claw my brains out after 2 minutes of playing.
Graphics are crap too, even if the game of course is very old. I've heard/read that the story is supposed to be good but to be honest, I never played long enough to experience it -

this game is an absolute masterpiece for the ages. period. no obnoxious spastic hyperactive button mashing, no life meter, no score, just pure artistic atmosphere and ingenuity ahead of its time. in a world of game design companies that sought to pile on the next mindless clone of a clone, one single game designer dared to be different, eric chahi.

A very frustrating yet important game. While extremely important in terms of cinematic storytelling in video games a lot of the game is unfair and intended to be trial and error.

I played and finished this game, thanks to the psn plus.
You have to keep in mind that is an old game and so the gameplay, (no) tutorial etc.
It is a lot of try-die-repeat, find the right path. But as the game is saved at every important checkpoint it is fast to re-try.
That's a 7 if you are nostalgic, less if you aren't.
Took me about 2 hours (very large).

Play it because it's part of gaming history. It's frustrating at times, but persist and you'll get through it.

I was honestly surprised by how engaged I was with this game from the start. It mostly handles well even from a modern perspective, but then the classic 90s difficulty spike set in, making you re-run the same obstacles over and over from a distant checkpoint until you get every single button press with perfect timing. Obviously this is fault I have with the original game design, and II was honestly surprised by how engaged I was with this game from the start.
