Overall, it is a solid cyberpunk adventure with a surprising amount of content that I can wholeheartedly recommend for those who enjoy the genre. ANNO: Mutationem was very much a blast to play from the very beginning through to the end credits. I certainly hope that we’ll get to see more of its fun world and characters in the future, as the game left me feeling like there should be more to come!

Developer Thinking Stars have come out swinging with Anno: Mutationem, a lot of it works, and some of it not so much. The game feels like the first act of an anime series, or the first part of a bigger story. There is a tease that there could be more to come, but we’ll have to wait and see. As it stands now, Anno: Mutationem is a little rough around the edges, but despite its flaws, I kept going back to it and was endlessly impressed by its scope, ambition, and excellent combat.

ANNO: Mutationem’s sublime blending of 2D and 3D visuals is a delight to behold and a joy to experience. Fast-paced combat and competent RPG systems all deliver so, as long as you can accept the incomprehensible plot and naff dialogue, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Unlike many of its kind, it uses various retro styles in a tasteful fashion, creating something truly beautiful and atmospheric. Just a shame that sound design is not as strong.. But visual artists of this game, give yourself a pat on the back for job really well done.
As a game, it is entertaining enough with its exploration, investigation, puzzle solving, crafting, mini games and 2D combat levels. Sadly, many of these segments are bit too simplistic and kinda basic, which makes the game feel like a cheap, low effort kickstarter, rather than a proper game. The combat levels are further let down by feeling more Mario than Sonic. This is an action adventure after all, with a action hero, so Sonic style levels with high speed and huge jumps and so on would have worked lot better than the sedate, Mario style trudges we have now.
But moans aside, this is ok game, and since it costs less than half of what 'real' games cost, its good enough purchase. But given how basic lot of the game feels, I cannot give it more than 7/10. Oh, and the deluxe edition is not worth it, as the bonuses it gives you will not make any impact on the game, sadly..
