Sometimes I think about what is ace combat games are and maybe it is all about the tracklist and this has some of the best tracks and some other best levels the aren't really too many doll runs and it keeps it up all the way it's just really fun to play.

And the story is really good and well told I care about the characters and was really sad when some of them died i lose you full beard sadly,
But the weird thing about the story is there is a lot of dark points like using prisoners for war with when they don't wanna fight and killing civilians and killing people who don't deserve it. It's just some of feels kind of icky.

Some missions are very difficult. I hope that in the next game there will be a more interesting plot, there will be no fictional magic-super-ultra planes, there will be an opportunity to play on planes of the First and Second World War, and that the allies will REALLY help you in battle and not constantly hate you Expand

Yeah it is simple arcade combat, but I like the accessibility for sure say compared to ArmA games dreaded aircraft controls/handling. AC7 is say the very opposite of the hardcore sim like IL-2 Sturmovik.

VR section not really impressed beyond take off and landing really. The ariel combat is kind of very underwhelming looking in VR for sure. After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

Brilliant game. Didn't expect it to be so much fun. Nice and simple, nothing too brain-taxing or deep, but sometimes you need that. Basically 'Top Gun - The Game.' Pretty much as you'd expect, but doesn't disappoint in any way. Some of the trophies are unnecessarily grindy, but the game is simple and fun.

A heck of a good jet fighter game. Over the top action, lots of great jets and weapons options. Balanced gameplay overall and some very serious challenge on the harder setting. Wacky story and cutscenes, but a fantastic in-game experience overall.

It hurts to give this game a lower score than I hoped, but unfortunately a few things hold this back seriously. The first is that the semi-famous "Ace Combat style" of storytelling falls completely flat here, making all the story segments and dialogue an annoyance at best and insufferable at worst. The second is that the PS4 just is not able to render coherent models and this is hampered further by a clunky user interface that offers only one option: on or off.

The story uses the AC tradition of converging perspectives, but they are so badly written here that the overall plot becomes uninteresting early on. Luckily, all the cutscenes and briefing segments can be skipped. Unfortunately, the on-mission chatter, which sets a new low standard for the series, cannot be muted and must be heard in its entirety. It's so bad that the player feels like a hostage to cringe, and unless you're a natural ace pilot you'll hear many missions' worth several times.

The lack of visual clarity in the game, at least in this version, is a serious detriment. Dogfighting is incredibly frustrating when you are simply not able to get a read on a plane's direction or bearing. Just as deflating is firing on ground targets only to realize there was actually a geographical feature that wasn't clear from the angle you approached. An equal offender here is the awful UI in general and heads-up display in particular, which feel lifted from a PS1 game for all their helpfulness and sense.

Overall a bit disappointing although the package DOES manage to come together by the end, but the slog will likely scare all but the most committed, patient, and weeb-friendly pilots out there. Here's hoping AC8 is a serious step forward instead of a largely "safe" entry.

The story is a bit weaksauce though. I failed to really feel love and care for my squadron and other game personalities, and the boss fights are basically nonexistent. AC always used to hit you with a superweapon every now and then, Stonehenge, the Arkbird, the Siphaxi, Excalibur, etc. These fights felt huge in scale and made you feel even more of a flying legend once they were over, and you also had to fight elite squadrons that boosted your reputation. Here you just stomp enemy soldiers really often... and these epic encounters are minimal. Don't get me wrong, it's good, it's just not Project Ace's top-tier game. Still, it's a great welcoming for the franchise into the newer generation of gaming and it's a great start for anybody that hasn't played them before. Expand

I played the original back when I was a kid, and was looking forward to some arcade-y action. This game kept the PS1 control imprecision and terrible Godzilla forced perspective (is that aircraft carrier far away or is it twice the size of my plane and I'm about to smack into it?) while throwing exponentially more targets at you and tossing your plane around with a bunch of kart-racer level weather effects. There's gold here, and when you run a mission well you feel like a demigod, but it's all buried under layers of inexplicably bad design decisions and a control scheme that hasn't changed since analog sticks were introduced.

Easily the worst part of this game is the lock on feature. You have to manually cycle targets all using one button, and the computer has no preference between selecting a craft on your nose within weapons range or a lone antiair gun on the far horizon. The most effective antiair defence the enemy has is burying the targets you're actually trying to shoot at in other low-priority targets that you then have to mash triangle to try and select all while performing evasive maneuvers and such. There have been numerous times I've had perfect lines on targets then either didn't get around to targeting them in time or mashed past. There is no previous target button, and the d-pad is left unmapped. Even then, you can fiddle with the controls a bit but I found myself struggling to work all the controls effectively and keep a grip on my controller, and I have pretty big hands. This would be a non-issue with the ability to remap the controls better/use the right stick for something other than free look, but that's not a thing for some reason. Neither is it a thing to be able to use the plane's external camera and have an attitude indicator displayed, meaning that if you appreciate being able to see more than what feels like a sixty degree cone in front of your plane and you fly into a cloud/sandstorm/stormfront and lose visibility, you have to switch cameras to check your plane's orientation, which means pulling your thumb off the guns/targeting. You also launch flares with L3+R3, something I had to check online to figure out (I also learned about PSMs and the lock-on zoom here, because the game refuses to tell you about any of this stuff) which if you accidentally don't depress L3 down enough because you're constantly maneuvering, it just changes your camera.

So the controls are archaic and very poorly explained, which makes the crushed perspective a hundred times worse. The ground texture looks like low res aerial photographs. This alongside the miniaturized model enemies caused me to repeatedly plow into the ground thinking I had space to maneuver until the moment before I smash into it. It should also be noted that the jets don't really perform like jets. They have a normal (uncharacteristically slow and wide) turning radius, but you can feather the accelerator to initiate a """High-G turn""" which is basically just an air drift. This encourages a weird style of flight where you're constantly accelerating so you can pump the brakes and turn faster, instead of just slowing down and being able to consistently perform hard turns. While it simplifies piloting somewhat and reduces on having to learn maneuvers (which the game is completely unwilling to teach you), it also encourages you to fly sloppily and perform maneuvers that transition fantastically into slamming into the ground at speed. Clean flight doesn't really matter though as many levels have weather hazards that 1) only apply to your plane and 2) feel like kart racer obstacles added to make your life harder. There's "high winds" that instantly accelerate your plane sideways at three times its' maximum velocity, there's "thunderclouds" that sit between 100-1000 feet off the ground that arbitrarily stall you and turn your instruments off for a minute, there's clouds that work as free chaff for enemy planes. Hell, halfway through the game, your IFF gets turned off and you have to "manually identify" targets by keeping your camera on them for a few seconds within a kilometer. It's even more inconsistent than early game targeting with the added bonus of being able to mistakenly target every friendly troop as well as every other enemy besides the one you want.

There's never a point where the game leans back and lets you fly, it's just a bunch of gimmick missions, usually 15 minute "blow up every target" endurance or escort slogs. If you make one mistake, sorry, back to the beginning to listen to another 15 minutes of inane chatter. I wanted to like this game so bad, but they blew it, hard. It's like Doom if shooting was fun, but aiming was incredibly frustrating, inconsistent, and gave you carpal tunnel.

I was thoroughly enjoying Ace Combat: Assault Horizon back in 2011. The story was interesting, and the theme felt gritty. Unlike previous entries, that game took place in our present time/world. The gameplay was excellent, and so was the story of the game.

Unfortunately the writers of Skies Unknown are clearly six years old, as the story of Skies Unknown is incredibly juvenile, and is little more than an anime fetish. Soldiers think they are starring in Top Gun or something, and the narration is beyond dumb. The military strategies are unrealistic, and the briefing maps are so confusing that i was lossed as to what was going on. There are weather effects that don't enhance the experience, but rather annoy the player. Just because it's more realistic, doesn't mean it makes the game better. The cinematics in this game are very basic and pretty much pointless. It comes down to slides and some slow cutscenes with voice-overs. I wonder why the development of this game took so long when you consider that Assault Horizon had well produced cinematics, yet this game seems to do the bare minimum. On top of that some levels are cringe worthy, as unrealistic scenarios are forced upon you like flying up the inside of a space elevator... IN A FIGHTER JET? WHAT THE **** It is not an exercise in skill, but just a matter of seizure inducing roadblocks. The Tech tree in this game is underwhelming. There are only three types of aircraft: Fighters, Multirole and Assault (although also only barely as there are only 2 Assault Aircrafts). There are only a few dozen different ones, whereas Assault Horizon had astonishingly many, and even had Helicopters.

Unlocking these happens through points, though the payout never seems to be enough to unlock a new aircraft at a steady pace. This becomes very annoying when you get a mission with ground- or naval targets, but can't unlock the aircraft with the proper missiles because you don't have nearly enough points yet. And then... You have to grind. Who thought that was a good idea? I guess Ace Combat: Infinity in 2013 was just a test to see if people where willing to do that.

Dogfighting is no longer a minigame, but the new way with more freedom in this game feels pretty good too. The G-turns are quick, easy and helps switching between targets.

Different types of aircraft mean nothing in Skies Unknown. Multirole aircrafts, which are supposed to do a combination a Dogfighting and air-to-ground attacks, usually don't even have dedicated air-to-ground missiles. In fact, it's usually better to use a fighter aircraft as these seem to be just a effective with better air-to-air weapons in reserve. Only later on in the tech tree, when you get the A-10 Thunderbird or the F35, you will have an aircraft that fights according to its type.

I don't know what happened after Assault Horizon, but this game feels like 3 steps back in every department except for graphics. The story is dumb, the characters are dumb, the aircraft tree is lazy and barren, and all the good additions that were made in Assault Horizon are suddenly gone.

It is entertaining, but it makes me roll my eyes just a bit too often. The final level is so dumb that it takes the quality of the game way down! It's a dumb game. I give it a 5/10

I was really looking forward to AC7 and when I saw it reduced to £11 on Amazon I got it immediately. However I'm left feeling a bit disappointed by the overall experience.

The graphics in this game are almost irrelevant. You're flying so fast a lot of the time that all you're seeing is sky, sea and ground. Unfortunately the ground seems to fare the worst graphically. Buildings and units don't look too great up close, and the more restricted environments are a pain to traverse as you can easily smash into barely noticeable objects and lose a lot of progress. Enthusiasts of combat jets may get a thrill here, but most of the airplanes looked the same to me and enemies are usually too far away to be appreciated visually. The weather is impressive visually but comes with the caveat of frustrating the gameplay.

The gameplay is the bread and butter of AC7. I actually haven't played any other games in the series, however my experience makes me reluctant to do so. What I really enjoyed was the dogfighting - when you get to face head-to-head with other fighters and blow them out of the sky the game is at it's zenith. The problem is this is far too often compounded by mundane and frustrating mission objectives and mechanics. Far too often I was failing missions due to not being aware of 'hidden' objectives such as protecting a unit, using stealth (who the hell wants to go slow in an F15?!) or by having time limits. Add to this the insane abilities of some enemies to manoeuvre their aircraft in unnatural ways (which of course you cannot do) and aspects such as vague mission objectives that don't help you decide what weapons you need to take with you into the mission (it's a game, not a flight sim, so there should be a variety of them at all times anyway), and you've got a very frustrating experience. A final thing worth mentioning is that in later missions you have to hover your crosshair over enemies to identify them before shooting, which REALLY became tedious for me.

The story is barely coherent, silly and nonsensical, so don't come to this game for that, although I imagine most of us are here for dogfighting and not soap operas anyway. I stopped paying heed to it very quickly as it was just delaying gameplay and didn't have enough direct applications to the game itself.

Overall, the game can be very enjoyable and despite my misgivings I kept coming back to it as the enjoyable elements were excellent. However had I known how difficult and unbalanced it was going to be I never would have played it in the first place. A challenge is one thing, but AC7 far too often takes control out of my hands and fails my missions for me. If you can tolerate the Dark Souls approach of many deaths and retries, this game is for you. Otherwise, get your flying kicks elsewhere.
