  1. The most realistic skate title ever made. The graphics, animation, sound, and revamped challenge system has created a game that will challenge the legendary "Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2" for its crown as the king of the series.
  2. A lot of the fluff that has plagued the series for the last couple years has been stripped away, revealing a game that fast, furious, and focused almost 100 percent on the play experience.
  3. Finally we see a good use of the Sixaxis controller, and it's about time the Classic mode returns as a single challenge. However, what's up with no online play, and why didn't the occasional slowdown get addressed?
  4. I know I keep coming back to this, but the online part of the past five Tony Hawk games has been the thing that keeps me coming back after I've played through the single-player game. Now granted, the goals this time around mean that I'll probably never completely finish the game, but I miss me some Trick Attack. Yes, I can do some local multi-player, but if I can't be beaten by some six year-old calling me a fag, I'm not really living the online experience, y'know?
  5. The gameplay is as freeform and as technical as it's ever been, with some smart changes on that front that are enough to keep fans of the series interested, while a new tutorial is aimed at getting new players up to speed. Unfortunately, some technical glitches and unstable frame rates plague both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 version of the game.
  6. Though a slowness to change and evolve hinders Tony Hawk Project 8's greatness, the developers sank a gargantuan lump of time into making the skating feel genuine, and it's enough to revitalize what is broadly the same game with a few newborn adoptions.

I wish that I could say that the PS3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8 felt like a next-gen game, but it doesn't even have online gameplay, an element that was crucial to solidifying Neversoft's current-gen games as a blockbuster franchise. Combine that with the flaws already plaguing the game, and it's very difficult to recommend.

I was highly disappointed in the ps3 version opposed to the ps2 version. No cheat codes for the ps3 version like, unlimited focus, balance and rail as to it's ps2 predecessor. Developers are not specific on how to complete certain goals. The player is constrained to complete too many goals for so little. 'SICK' completions are almost impossible. As familiar game play is also found in proving ground. I think I'll go back to my ps2...and remember how great it is Expand

The last Tony Hawk before EA’s Skate took over and it blowed up a decade later. As for Project 8 it was decently good for what it is.

From the "Wreck Yourself" mission that seems nearly impossible without actively exploiting every bug in the games engine you can, from the 100% tacky and unfashionable custom character items, to the toony style of created skaters ALWAYS clashing with every pro in the game represented in photorealism, to a random photographer and video recorder being judges in the games' contest instead of actual pros, this game just constantly screams at every moment "we know we aren't going to be that good, but we at least want to do the best we can." It's absolutely filled with personality, easter eggs, jokes, little secrets, and fantastic level design & skating spots. Additionally, the games' open world is incredibly ambitious (too much for its' own good" in having absolutely ZERO locations which require a delay in gameplay between segments. By all means, this is a singular map. Where I'm less positive on this game though, is in feel. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a series FOUNDED on its' gameplay and this game betrays that to try to LOOK like it plays perfectly through smooth motion-captured animation and always making sure you have juuuuust enough momentum to hit every unreasonable gap. These things show immediately as just being window dressing, and what's left is actually a slight REDUCTION of the mechanical complexity of the previous entry, American Wasteland, and at a far slower speed with less consistency to the point i'd often fail to do something as simple as ollie off of a vert pipe. It's a simpler, worse game with less polish and only around 4-5 levels' worth of skatable terrain. But it does have things that keep me coming back, if not especially often. A good game I wouldn't recommend, or a bad game i think you'd have a fun time with. I'm not sure on a label, but this one's alright. Give it a try sometime, if you want to. Expand

Tony Hawk's Project 8 was essentially the last Tony Hawk game I was extensively interested in playing while it was new. I got the titles that were released after, but always remember putting them down a lot quicker than the previous releases so I consider Project 8 to be the official dropping point for my Tony Hawk game fascination, at least when it comes to the new games that were being released. I grew up with the ps2 version of this game, which is NOT the version I'm reviewing today. That port is watered down from its next gen versions, as to be expected, and is not worth revisiting beyond mere curiosity at this point. That being said, I still think the ps3 and 360 versions are worth a try if you like skating games. I think it's a drop off from previous games, trying (and mostly failing) to take a more realistic approach. There's a lot of cut features from the previous games, the new movement system takes some getting used to and I feel like a lot of the charm from the previous titles has mostly vanished, but I think it stands on it's own if you don't compare it to previous titles. As I said, the movement system is a little different and might take some getting used to, but once you do, it's really a blast to use. The maps are all decent and the true open world is a great edition, you can skate around the entire map without a single loading screen or.. loading hallway like in Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. A true and genuine open world skating game, something that the Skate games would later perfect.
Project 8 is it's own thing and it does a pretty good job at being it's own thing in my opinion. I beat this game in February 2020 after beating it many times before.
