Thus far the standout episode this season. [Oct 2014, p.93]

This is definitely one of the better episodes of The Walking Dead: Season Two, and the best chapter of a Telltale game in a good few months.

Amid the Ruins is as polished and absorbing as The Walking Dead has ever been, but narrative missteps and throwaway characters diminish the impact of Clementine's growth.

The Walking Dead: Season 2, Episode 4 – Amid the Ruins serves up yet another emotional rollercoaster, offering just enough time between conflicts in order to allow you to catch your breath.

One of the lesser episodes of the season, due to a lack of intense moments and a slight overload of rather dull activities. Luckily, a couple of plot twists and a superb last-minute cliffhanger keep it from becoming a chore. Though we do think Telltale should fix the framerate. Now. Immediately.

The shocking moments, choices, and deaths that occur are some of the best in the series and we see a glimpse of a stronger Clementine, yet somehow it all seems contrived.

On the whole this review may seem incredibly downbeat, but when you’ve set the bar so high it’s going to be hard to reach, and episode 4 is where the big stumble happens. It’s not a bad episode per se, just a disappointing one.

It's filled with memorable moments both dark and sad. There are actual hub worlds this time around just like in the first season, but there still aren't any puzzles. That's okay though, because the numerous tough choices and relationship building moments this episode has were enough to keep me glued to my controller.

It still doesn't reach the heights the episodes of the first season attained, but overall it's a genuinely good episode. It went a long way to make me actually start caring about it's cast by doing things like trimming it down of the more bland characters. It's just a shame that most of the characters I already enjoyed or just started enjoying either end up dead or leaving before the credits roll. When you consider that there's only one episode left this season, and that it will undoubtedly kill off the majority of remaining characters, it makes me worry that the new potential the cast started showing in this episode will end up being wasted. At the very least it's a noticeable improvement on what I have so far found to be a disappointing second season. I give it a 7.5/10=Good.
