After playing so many shooters in recent years, Thieves in Time’s old-school platforming is a breath of fresh air. While it doesn’t innovate, its subtle craftsmanship and varied gameplay reasserts what we’ve always known: This genre still has something important to add to the game industry. I hope this game meets with the success it deserves.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is an excellent platformer/stealth hybrid, just like its predecessors, and something long-time fans of the series will love, but newcomers may be better off picking up the HD trilogy since it doesn’t do all that much new and gives you far more value for your money.

Sly Cooper's last is a solid adventure. Thieves in Time is a finely crafted game and a funny one to play.

It does so many things right and harkens back to a different time in gaming while modernizing the experience for a new generation. It may not wow you like some of the best PlayStation exclusives have in the past, but needless to say, the wait for a continuation of the Sly saga was officially worth it.

There are occasional stumbles, but Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is another good entry in the platforming series.

Despite the constant feeling of déjà vu, there’s a lot of gameplay here. The entire adventure will take around 10-15 hours to finish, never mind hunting down all of the hidden secrets and trying to chase after that ever-elusive Platinum trophy. And its hard not to fall back into Sly’s world – it’s familiar, safe, like an old blanket.

When it comes right down to it, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a competent platformer that rests on the laurels its namesake and plays it far too safe. That said, hardcore fans will find plenty to love solely because it's more Sly. So if pretty art and average platforming sounds worth the price of admission, who am I to stop you?

This new team really did a good job with sly cooper and his friends. We are still stuck on a cliff hanger but I hope we can come back from it. The game is one of the best in the entries and it lives up to franchise. The story and the way the game plays is excellent ! A great sly cooper game. Expand

At its core, the Sly Cooper games are platformers, but the last few installments have strayed towards action-adventure. And Sky Cooper:At its core, the Sly Cooper games are platformers, but the last few installments have strayed towards action-adventure. And Sky Cooper: Thieves in Time captures that perfectly. Developer Sanzaru Games didn't develop the original three PS2 Sly games, but they definitely know what they are doing. From the beautiful cel shaded graphics to the fluid animations, Sly Cooper is a PS3/Vita title that deserves more credit than it receives. Along with Jak and Ratchet, Sly was part of Sony's "Big 3" of gaming during the PS2 days. Of those three, Sly was probably the most deservent of a sequel, and now after his eight year absence from the gaming scene, he is getting one that is worthy of Sucker Punch's originals. And with a cliffhanging ending, this may not be the last time we see Sly Cooper, the master thief, in action. Expand

If you're a fan of the previous games like me, you'll have no problems with any of the gameplay mechanics, everything is the same as Sly 2 and 3 with the exception of the abilities purchased from thiefnet. However, I didn't like a few of the small changes like the very small amount of hooks to swing from and not being able to map abilities to the L1, L2 and R2 buttons. Sly's gameplay is a little better because of the addition of the costumes that he gets in each era though. All minor flaws aside, the platforming gameplay is as great and fun as it was and still is. I liked pretty much everything else in the game too, especially the story. It's just a simple story that obviously continues from Sly 3. The only big problems I had with game at all were the load times and occasional framerate drops. The loading times are just ridiculous, sometimes I've had to wait thirty seconds or more for the game to load. The framerate drops are annoying as well, the framerate is usually fantastic, but every now and then it will just drop for a few seconds and it's just something that I found to be a little bit annoying. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a truly fantastic game and a game that's worthy of being in the Sly Cooper franchise. A few minor annoyances can't slow it down, it's still a great game, and any Sly Cooper fan must have it and any gamer would find it to be a great experience. Expand

This really is a pretty good game, but some of the changes they made from the PS2 games weren't the best. Seeing some of Sly's ancestors was cool, but some of the writing wasn't as good. I am a bit mixed on the art style for the game. Overall, this is a good game, I just don't always know how I feel about it. Expand

It's good, but it's not progressed by anything since the 2nd game was released in 2004. I could even say Thieves in Time got just a bit worse than Sly 2 and 3.

The story is meh (Sly travels back in time and encounters several of his ancestors across the centuries), and most of the time you play as any other character other than the protagonist Sly. This particular structure of playing as another character, which debuted in Sly 2, has only gotten overblown in this game. Across the 6 chapters it's something like 2 missions for Sly, 2 for Bentley, 2 for Murray, and 1 for the guest star of each chapter (a Sly ancestor). It may sound as full of variety, but sadly most missions aren't as fun as on the previous games.

The core gameplay is exactly the same as the old games, which isn't bad but there are few surprises, if at all. The art style has been updated for the modern age, but I like it less than the one in the PS2 games. Thankfully on PS3 it runs at 60 fps, which is important for a 3D platformer. There is even the cross-save feature to transfer your save data between the PS3 and Vita versions and play the game on whichever platform you want. If you have the choice though, play it on the PS3.

I know that I may be overly critical about this game, but I played the PS2 games on the PS3/Vita remasters and they were better. I only wish a new Sly Cooper game will come out at some point. Until then, play The Sly Collection on PS3/Vita and then consider Thieves in Time.

I have a lot more to say about this game, but otherwise my review would be way too long.
Minus yet, this game doesn’t have Murray’s The Ball Form ability.
I’ve never liked time travel. Time travel makes no sense to me and it doesn’t seem to belong in the Sly universe at all. Too bad there was no more going from the main menu directly to the game, it was a matter of Sly games.
I doesn’t like Thieves in time 2d animation cutscenes, I don’t like their art style (the original games with animatio cutscenes were, I think, much more personal, fun, pretty and more detailed). I think Thieves in Time’s cutscene animations are too humorous.
And I think Sly’s ancestors could have been kept in the shadows / unknown. I liked the original trilogy that the ancestors weren’t told everything and was partly mysterious, and that made Sly’s ancestors much more interesting, and in this game they had been made full of idiots / overwhelmed.

But I still hope for a new Sly game, but I wish Sucker Punch would do it, or some other studio who understands what made the original trilogy so great. Sly spin off would be a good idea (a spin off that ranks between Sly 1 and Sly 2, + at the same time telling the Cooper gang about the Istanbul gig that Murray mentioned in Sly 2, Episode 7, Battle Club mission). Or completely forget about Thieves in timen and make Sly 4 completely rebuild + throw the time travel thing away, and Sly and his partners stay on their own time.
