Third may be dumb fun, but it's the smartest realization of the sandbox spirit we've seen in a long while. [Holiday 2011, p.72]

Main story missions traipse from one outlandish setup to the next. Blowing stuff up with a helicopter or getting your game show on with Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax, which felt a little more more like a realized version of Smash TV, or just clearing out rival gangs, it's a good assortment provided you stay on the story path.

The third Saints Row is solid proof that GTA ins't the only sandbox game out there. Dirty jokes, nice storyline and full-packed city ensures that you won't get bored at Steelport City. Haters gonna hate, but that's their loss. [Dec 2011]

Volition succeeded in making its joint even more enjoyable: updated graphics and over-the-top missions make it a lot of fun to play, especially with a friend. It probably lacks in innovation when compared to its predecessor, but it's a chapter of the saga you don't want to miss.

There are no heavy plots to become embroiled in, each mission is essentially just a method of throwing you into another zany situation and then rewarding you for getting out of it. That's the strength of this game: that it just wants to make you smile.

With all of these things in mind, I respect that Saints Row: The Third might not be a game for everyone. Specifically, those who do not find joy in the act of inflicting terrible, fiery, dildo-y pain on whatever innocent polygonal creature happens to wander too close to their personal blast zone will probably not get much out of Saints Row's unrelenting dedication to preposterous anarchy. It is a game specifically designed for annihilation junkies, those who can embrace the idea of an infantile playground of seemingly infinite obliterative pleasures. For those who prefer their games a tad less absurdly--perhaps needlessly--violent, any number of other games this fall will likely suit your fancy just fine.

Not even half as crazy and daring as it likes to think, but instead a dispiritingly conservative collection of bland third person action and missed opportunities.

I usually steer clear of games like this. I tried Saints Row 1&2, and while I could respect them for what they were trying to accomplish,I usually steer clear of games like this. I tried Saints Row 1&2, and while I could respect them for what they were trying to accomplish, they still fell into the same "just don't care" category as GTA. I'm not a huge fan of "gangsta life," rarely enjoy sophomoric humor involving pimps and prostitutes, and can't get satisfaction from cop-killing and other criminal activities. Games are an escapist experience for me, and I typically prefer more fantasy or sci-fi inspired settings, and if a game chooses to depict a more realistic modern setting, I will only pay attention to it if the story and themes are highly original. That being said, Saints Row: The Third doesn't meet any of those deeper, escapist qualities that I mentioned, nor does it depict anything realistic in its loose "gangsta" themes. This third entry takes the series in a new direction, and the result has more in common with Twisted Metal or Just Cause than Grand Theft Auto. This is the kind of on-screen madness that I can get on-board with. For someone who is still playing Dark Souls, The Witcher 2, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and Skyrim, a little stupid fun can go a long way towards cheering me up. SRTT aims to make you smile, and all of its ridiculous humor makes you realize just how funny games can be when they don't take themselves seriously. Sure, you still kill cops and blow s*** up constantly, but in SRTT, it all feels so idiotic and over-the-top, that you half-expect the same characters that you chopped up with a chainsaw or threw out of a 40th floor window to get up and laugh it off, followed by another vain attack against your easily overpowered character. Now, that's not to say that the game is a breeze; it can be quite challenging on the highest of its three difficulty settings. But it also rewards you for practically everything you do, from near misses in traffic to a chain of headshots, making it an unlikely comparison to games like Elder Scrolls in its open-world RPG elements. On that note, the character creation and continuous customization rival the best role-playing titles on the market. You can also upgrade weapons, get vehicles, and purchase property. It's weird to admit this, but after playing Saints Row: The Third, you start to wonder why more serious RPGs don't incorporate these gameplay components on a consistent basis. There's no denying that the game is well-constructed, and even though the campaign will only last about 15 hours, it includes enough content to extend play to the 30 or 40-hour mark. That's not including the countless hours you could spend on multiplayer and other modes, and DLC is already showing up on the network. In the end, Saints Row: The Third is exactly as advertised - an adult playground with a stupid amount of toys to help you waste time, but you may be surprised by the lasting value you get out of such a mindless experience. I certainly was. Expand

This is what started off the over the top and gay ass bullsh*t that we've seen in SRIV and SR Gat out of Hell. I can't believe how they f*cked this franchise up. Saints Row was the best and definitely followed by SR2. F*cking hate how childish the game has become. Absolutely everything about it is childish. The humour is f*cking trash, most weapons are sh*t, STAG soldiers are bullet-sponges, the story is weird and boring and way too short etc
This made me lose faith in the franchise. And as of September 2020, still nothing from Volition about the next SR, since it's supposedly deep in development. Absolutely zero information, not even a hint if it's gonna go back to it's roots or continue being that gay sh*t that it has been since 2011.
