The camera work is tight on this rollercoaster, and the generous unlockable content makes this feel like much more of a love letter to fans. [September 2012, p75]

For most of the time Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles fails to impress. Whilst it's certainly not the worst game out there, it struggles to rise above average, and I wonder if it would sell at all if not for the Resident Evil name behind it. If you're a fan of the franchise there's a good chance you'll get a kick out of this, but for everyone else I struggle to recommend it.

The downside is that without having a PS Move to enjoy 100% this release the experience with Dual Shock 3 is something awful, you get accustomed, but is far from the original gameplay on Nintendo Wii.

Umbrella Chronicles is essentially the Cliff Notes to the Resident Evil series placed in a light gun/on-rail shooter. If you looking to getUmbrella Chronicles is essentially the Cliff Notes to the Resident Evil series placed in a light gun/on-rail shooter. If you looking to get caught up on the series, the is an EXCELLENT chance to do so. However, the game misses the whole survival horror experience and just goes for The House of the Dead series tried to do to Resident Evil. Despite that, the game is entertaining and hosts a wealth of unlockable content, including scenarios featuring the main antagonist that stretch through the series timeline and other stories that are given a better light.

As a fan service for the Resident Evil guys and gals, this doesn't disappoint, but it does contradict the original content a bit here and there. Just remember, this the Cliff Notes version. Also, fans will notice that the way some of the levels were set up, match up how Raccoon City is arranged in the Resident Evil Outbreak series. (Which was cool!) For the most parts, fans will eat this up, just as long as they can stomach the rail shooting and the dumbed down graphics. (Which are average for the PS3)

But if you are looking for a vast improvement grapically, it isn't here. This is a direct port of the Wii version.

Although,Graphics: These are horrible graphics ported from the Wii, and they still don’t look HD. RE1 on gamecube looks better than this. Although, it is still playable and decent on the eyes. 6.

Sound: Corny voice acting, that’s not nemesis crapcom, nice knowable RE themes. Average at best. 6.

Gameplay: Rail shooter, very slow paced, fun for a while, quickly gets old. Difficulty spikes are really tough but it’s because the game expects you to play levels over and over to upgrade weapons and get higher level rankings. Some of the levels don’t even unlock unless you get an A rank on some. But these are optional missions but still play a part in the main story. I finished them off but forced myself as it felt like a chore. 6.

Story: It’s a nice piece of story although they don’t follow the actual events properly. Nemesis is trash in this game, the guy that designed him and voiced him needs to get punched in the face. The extra story’s for Vincent are nice, and never before seen, Rebecca’s scenes as well. 8.

Replay Value: Plenty to replay although it will feel like a chore. The game is about 8 hours with the optional missions it should take up to 12 hours. 8.

Overall Score: 6.8 out of 10.

Not great! I can respect what they were trying to do (cash in on a successful franchise by repackaging the story in a worse format) but INot great! I can respect what they were trying to do (cash in on a successful franchise by repackaging the story in a worse format) but I really did not have a good time playing this.

It might be because the game was built for two players and I played it solo, which made some parts of it way harder. It could be because the checkpoint/save system means you will repeat sections multiple times. Or it could be the fact that I played it with a controller instead of a Wii remote.

Even for Resident Evil fans, this wouldn't be worth your time.
