    It still amazes at all the average scores NIER has been getting from the so called video gaming experts. I've been playing NIER since day 1 of release and I can honestly say its one of the most innovative mature games to hit this console generation. Yes the graphics are not the best and graphically there are way better games out there but if you can look past the graphics what you It still amazes at all the average scores NIER has been getting from the so called video gaming experts. Yes the graphics are not the best and graphically there are way better games out there but if you can look past the graphics what you will experience with NIER is an Action-RPG with a fantastic adult orientated story. NIER is much more than your typical Action-RPG it has side scrolling segments, top down segments, shooter segments which all seem to blend in pretty well with each other. If Final Fantasy XIII left a bad taste in your mouth with the lack of towns and NPC's then you will enjoy NIER as it has loads of towns and NPC's to interact with. It has also one of the most amazing video game soundtracks I have heard in a long time with memorable tracks which gives the game a sense of epicness. The voice acting is also excellent with some well known voice actors from the anime circuit. NIER is a strange game with some weird elements but personally I cant recommend it enough!… Expand

    Wow what can I say! This game really is one of the best games of 2010. The story and characters are really great and touching. The graphical art style is fantastic.

    The combat is very fun.

    There are lots of optional sidequests throughout the game and there all different.

    The game probably has one of the most amazing beautiful ost's ever.

For a medium whose proponents constantly deride a lack of innovation and yet consistently reward that lack with huge sales and glowing reviews, I am relieved that a little weirdieNIER is the surprise of the year.     Many JRPGs get lined up against the wall for daring to be too stale, but Nier has nearly been forgotten for being exactly the opposite; bold, brash and brilliant. It's as if someone in Square Enix got a hold of whatever Suda51 plays with and they just went to town with it.     I love this game. i got hooked from the beginning, don't get me wrong, there is a lot of leg work and if you are going for 100% completion you better have a spare 100 hours or so. The reason this is an 8 instead of a 10 is because of the enemy design and the camera angle. The camera angle is completely adjustable. One of the best game I have ever played in my entire life, while combat may be clunky and repetitive, NIER makes up for every single bit of it with the immensely good story and lovable characters and the whole feel of the post apocalyptic world. (SPOILER) The dialogues of all the bosses you encounter on your second play through brings tears to your eyes, never before I was torn between sympathizing more with the main character or the bosses, never (SPOILER)… Expand

    I play games for story, and this game now that I have completely finished it ranks in my top 5. I would actually say it's number 3 after Xenogears and Xenosaga series, just edging out Planescape: Torment. The gameplay itself can be boring, the world is small and repetitive, but if you can push through that it's HIGHLY rewarding. Masterpiece of video game storytelling.

    Picked Nier up for $20 new, and wow, I'm amazed, it's now one of my all time favorites. I had a tough time putting it down after I started playing, mostly in part due to the freakingly amazing soundtrack, great use of cinematography, well written and voice acted dialogue, and addictively interesting and sometimes frustratingly painful sidequests/extras. The plot is simple, however, thePicked Nier up for $20 new, and wow, I'm amazed, it's now one of my all time favorites. I had a tough time putting it down after I started playing, mostly in part due to the freakingly amazing soundtrack, great use of cinematography, well written and voice acted dialogue, and addictively interesting and sometimes frustratingly painful sidequests/extras. The plot is simple, however, the story delves much much deeper, hinting a number of underlying tones which keeps you interested. The characters are memorable and engaging, and the game demonstrates good character development/degradation. Nier's pacing and use of cutscenes' is effective, and the save point system is interesting, logical, and intelligently placed. Very well featured with plenty of things to keep you occupied. Maybe it's too well featured, it attempts to do A LOT of things, and sometimes, you just want to stick to a certain weapon/magic/technique/style of gameplay, and be more time efficient and just get the job done. Art style and quality can definitely be improved for some parts of the game (like Nier's head), however, little things like changing the camera control in certain levels to change the atmosphere of the gaming experience is commendable. Other preferred improvements would be having more art assets and level environments to add more to the world experience and lessen some of the repetitive nature of the game. Regardless of the repetition, I give props to the development team for making extensive use of their assets/levels, and creating a unique, mature-themed Action RPG. If you're into 10- hour games, Nier probably isn't for you. To have a complete experience, be prepared to invest a good amount of time, at least 40 hours or more for sidequests, extras, trophies, and the multiple playthroughs to complete all scenarios. There is so much variety in the game and many different styles come together brilliantly. This game is a love letter to many different rpgs from text-based adventures to Secret of Mana.     I think this is one of the most under appreciated game in video game history. If I remember correctly this game came out during an era of action game hype (God of War, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta), and with poor marketing, many game critics reviewed it as such when it is actually a story-driven action RPG.

    Most game websites bashed it for having awful combat compared to the above mentioned action hits. Well...OF COURSE it does. Even if you pit Zelda series against those action titles, its combat would be shallow.

    The game excels in its story, characters, atmosphere, music. The game play overall combines many genres. For the most part it's hack and slash action, then at one point you are solving block pushing puzzles from a birdseye view, and for many boss fights it suddenly becomes almost like a bullet-hell shooter!? Yeah, you can say it is a jack of all trades and master of none, but I personally appreciated the variety.

    Nier it's amazing in almost everything, the story it's freaking awensome, the character are really good, and the music it's soo good!, people, BUY this game, it's very good!

    One of the very few games I actually played until I had everything the game has to offer, including the platinum trophy. Despite the heavy grinding necessary to do that, the soundtrack managed to keep me motivated all through the process.

    Nier is a fantastic game. It may not be able to compete with the graphics of the latest Call of Duty or the combat of earlier Devil May Cry    One of the very few games I actually played until I had everything the game has to offer, including the platinum trophy.     Nier is a fantastic game. It may not be able to compete with the graphics of the latest Call of Duty or the combat of earlier Devil May Cry installments, but this is one of the few games that has a real "soul". It's hard to explain. You have to experience it yourself or you will miss what is one of the greatest gaming experiences I've had in the past two decades.

    Even over a year after finishing it, I still listen to the soundtrack every now and then and check some of the best cutscenes on Youtube. I can't wait for Drakengard 3.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I begin, here are a few facts about NIER:

    1) It is a story entirely based on the 5th ending of the first Drakengard (Drag-On Dragoon 1) in the Drakengard series. As such, many of NIER's likeness comes directly from that series.

    Now the review:

    1) Story

    To cut straight to the point; It's a story that doesn't start off as ambitious as one might want it to, but ultimately hits all cylinders upon it's second half; ending the tale with much needed, but unexpected flare. If there is anything this game has done right, it is the way they did the multiple endings. Each one is available, one per (second half) playthrough; each playthrough offering something new to the mix, from adding new scenes to gaining the ability to understand the gestalts (shades). And I have to say, the latter is brilliant. Not once have I ever hesitated slaughtering an opponent more than some of the bosses and minions on my second playthrough. There is no true good and evil. (9/10)

    2) Gameplay

    The gameplay is simple. A hack and slash, MUCH like the "Drakengard" series of games; but with the addition of magic. Nier is able to carry 3 types of weapons (One-Handed, Two-Handed, Spear) and over 8 types of magic. Magic is often over-powered and not always easy to use; yet it is the most fun you can have out of the combat found in this game, sadly. Aside from the main quest, side-quests are not varied and all consist of nothing more than fetch quest missions, that don't pay well for the amount of effort required to be put into them. The only reason to do them is to buy the best weapons, found in Part I and Part II of the game. 55,000G is enough; trust me. (5/10)

    3) Music

    By far the most outstanding aspect of the game besides the story, is the OST. Directed by Keiichi Okabe, the OST features 43 tracks (9 that are not vocal), many of which is sung in the broken dialect of several languages (Gaelic, French, Portuguese, English, etc) by Emi Evans. To tell the truth, I don't think you'll find an OST out there currently, that could ever surpass this in quality and uniqueness. The tracks each give a feeling of individuality, but are all focused around the melancholic plot that is being told. They also are a reminder to remnants of the societies that once populated the world. (10/10)

    4) Characters

    The characters are great, period. Outside of the sensitiveness of Emil and the fatherly/brawny figure of Nier, I don't think you'll find many characters that'll fit in the same character archetypes that are found in this game. Kaine and Grimiore Weiss are by far, the stars in this game. One offering witty, intellectual commentary and the other, a mysterious female with a dark past, who often broods seriousness as well as plenty of profanity. I liked Weiss a lot, but Kaine is the main one to look out for; especially on your second playthrough. (7/10)

    5) Graphics

    It's to be expected from a game that is based off of and was created by the same developer of the "Drakengard" series. Basically, the graphics is not the game's strong suit. At all. I'd compare it to a spiffed up version of Shadow of the Colossus HD or a HD Drakengard game. Not much to be had here. (5/10)

    6) Overall (TL;DR)

    For hardcore RPG/JRPG fans, this is definitely a game that should NOT be over looked. It does so many things right and a couple of things wrong. The replay value is high; but it'll still be entirely dependent on your enjoyment of the story. Basically, if you liked the story and want more of it; you should replay it at least 2 times. There is extra content/story after you finish! Overall, don't play this to be immersed, as it isn't a game meant for that; trust me. This is a weekend quickie; meant for a quick and smooth trip through one of gaming's best and memorable stories. (8/10) Highly Recommended.    … Expand

    I'll be honest i wasn't expecting much when i 1st got it. After playing my first playthrough i can say that this game surprised me. I enjoyed everything for the story to the combat, with a great sound track and amazing atmosphere i really enjoyed myself. I did find it a bit too easy though and most bosses didn't require much thought on how to beat but (note: i was playing on normal) butI'll be honest i wasn't expecting much when i 1st got it. This is possible because of the characters, the dialog (level of a good novel), great voice acting, and fantastic music (which you will likely want to listen to a bit even outside of the game). It is also a game worth playing more than once, as the narrative changes a little on your next walkthrough.

    The gameplay (fighting mechanics etc.) itself is OK, but no more than that. The same can be said about the graphics.

    For me, this was a hidden gem, an experience that won't be forgotten for a long time. For those that like story-driven games, and accept good (not great) gameplay mechanics this is a must have.    … Expand

    While to be honest i did'nt have very high expectations for square enixs latest title and sometimes i'am wrong and get blown away, unfortunatly this was not one of those times. Nier's story is the reason to stick around for 30+ hours of gameplay, thats assuming you can live through some of the most bland and simple combat in an action rpg.     The characters overall are good, but a little bit too dramatic sometimes while in other that dramaticism gives you a lot of feelings, specially in sad parts.

    There are novel designed parts that in my opinion felt very artistic and intense, but I would not be surprised if others found them annoying and got tired of reading, it depends on the personal taste.

    Finally, the music is GREAT, amazing soundtrack, fits great with the overall felling on the game, this apartment is one of the best highlights of the game.

    Overall is a great game experience that I would recommend to anyone that likes RPG games.    … Expand

This game really makes you love all the characters, not in an over the top way like FFXIII either. graphics may be bad but if you want a good engaging RPG then this is definitely it. i bought this the same time i got darksiders (also a brilliant game) i played darksiders for an hour then turned on Nier. as soon as i saw the graphics in nier i wont lie i was eager to getFor the RPG fan.     A highly original action-RPG that adds all sorts of wild ideas into the mix, from 2D platforming to bullet hell shooters. Dreamy musics, good characters, and an interesting story but on the other hand, it's a bit short, looks bland, has monotonous combat, and is lacking in compelling side content. Still well worth a playthrough or two, though.

    Probably one of the most underrated games of all time. The game has it's flaws. The graphics aren't impressive at all, some mechanics aren't too polished or even fun but overall this game is an amazing experience. The story, the characters, the music... it's all over the top. I found myself playing this game nonstop so i could check the next ending as soon as i could. This game is a piece of art.

    Nier isn't perfect. It's a game with mediocre gameplay and graphics. However, it really shines in both the soundtrack and story. This game made me feel things that I haven't felt since I played Silent Hill 2 for the first time. If you enjoy a good story and music, check this out. But make sure you at least get the second ending!

    Nier has got one of the most touching, dark and melancholic story this gen.( It's written by Yoko Taro, so duh? A soundtrack that's at least worth a place in The Top 3 Best OSTs of All Time. You really feel connected with the main character and his friends/allies and the    Nier...what a beautiful game you are.

    You really feel connected with the main character and his friends/allies and the game presents a father daughter relationship like no other game has done before, even after.
    Side missions don't feel like a big burden and some even have a touching story with them *sniff* poor doggy *sniff* ).
    And another thing that Nier does differently than the rest...Endings.
    All four endings of Nier delivered.
    And as you expect from Yoko Taro, be prepared for NG+.
    The more you play and you slowly start to unlock the other endings, it starts to get more depressing and more and more and more... I've never ever felt such an empty feeling in my chest ever unlocking every ending. You'll get warped back at the beginning of Act 2 when doing NG+, so you don't start all the way at the beginning).
    But there were only one and a half things that bugged the hell out of me: The lack of more locations and some lack of polish and detail of the existing levels.
    Nier is a gem in every way. From the changing gameplay to the OST.
    If you can forgive it's technical shortcomings and you want a story with an explosive climax or a change of scenery in the JRPG scene, then please try this game out.
    You can only imagine what Cavia could've done with a bigger budget and a little bit more time.

    The crowning achievement is of course the mature, non compromising story, or stories, because as you play through Nier you uncover many fascinating characters and get drawn into their live and their stories and every one is enjoyable and compelling. The character have unfortuatly been tainted a bit by centain fans of the games over the years , making them out to be something they are not in the game and for this reason I really hope the game is never updated or remade. This is a game that was playable and great when it was released and will still be 20 years from now. If people want to experience this masterpiece they should experience the original vision , it's a game that was bold for its time and times have changed for the worse, censorship and offended snowflakes would destroy what makes Nier great.    … Expand

    Nier probably has one of, if not the best story ever in a videogame, is very adult themed, kind of sad and gets uncovered the more you play the game (great replay value, i finished it 3-4 times i think to get its extra endings). The second time you play it, you see the argument from your enemy perspective with incredible results.
    A cult game and a hidden gem indeed, Nier is one of the games that touches you and you never forget about it.    … Expand

    I'm going to keep this review short and simple:
    I loved playing Nier. It has it's share of flaws, especially with somewhat monotonous combat once you unlock the strongest spells as well as the main minigame, but the music and story were probably my favorite out of any game I've played. If you enjoy JRPGs, then I'd recommend this to you.

    Nier is a awesome game. I give it 10/10.

    It is unique, dark, interesting, and insane. It is truely unique. I love this game. The soundtrack is so beautiful. How anyone can score this any lower than 10/10 is beyond me. The graphics are fine. It never slows down. That is something to say. It is a amazing story. A dark, intelligent and unique game. Brilliantly and well written. I love Nier. :)

Depending on how much grinding you do, you may get tired of the music, but nevertheless it's still one of the best soundtracks I've heard. The story is mature and quite emotional, as it tells the story of a man trapped in a dying world trying to save his daughter. There are some twists and turns along the way and altogether it makes for a very engaging experience.

    Finally, the characters. The primary protagonist is a middle-aged man who is, as stated previously, fighting to save his daughter. He's a hard worker and skilled warrior that makes his living by putting his skills to good use and hiring himself out to help the villagers that have showed he and his daughter so much kindness and charity in the past in whatever tasks they need help with, from doing their shopping and hunting down eggs (hidden by some very canny chickens) to taking on a ferocious wild boar. He is a hard man, also quite different from what some would expect from a JRPG in that he looks like he's being beaten over the head with an ugly stick.

    The interactions between the characters are terrific, in particular between our hero and Weiss, his floating companion. Overall, this game is terrific. I've loved it since I bought it and I think any RPG fan would enjoy it thoroughly.    … Expand

    Great game. This game reminds me alot of Illusion of Gaia. A different kind of RPG that is quirky, feels different and yet familar at the same time. Great soundtrack, I personally dont think the graphics are bad at all having grown up with the snes/ps1 and so on, and the gameplay keeps you interested.

The voice-acting didn't really fit the persona of the characters either.

    The only positives I can say about this game is that it tried to be different, and it's refreshing when we're getting a lot of formulaic games now. But, the developers were a bit too ambitious with their ideas for this game, and it was implemented properly.

    I am not a graphics hog but this game feels like from the PS2 era with the exception of the boss fights. It's on the graphical level of shadow of the colossus.

    I really can't recommend this game to anyone unless you have played everything else you've wanted to play, and you just want this game a shot. For me, it isn't the hidden gem/masterpiece I was expecting.    … Expand

    Nier suffers from subpar graphics, subpar story/presentation, and a lot of repetition; doing dungeons for the third time except with different enemies is rather boring and the combat, while passable, isn't anything to get excited about. The one standout point is the beautiful, if somewhat repetitive soundtrack.

    I didn't have very high expectations from a game that was a spin off of another game. I figured it was just meant to ride the popularity of the Drakengard series. Boy, was I wrong! This game is amazing!!! From the awesome story and unique characters, to the great battle mechanics and the music, everything in this game stands out as truly remarkable.

    A great game forgotten by media. It has many flaws in the gameplay, but while the story is hard to understand, it’s easily one of the greatest in years of gaming. Yoko Taro made some amazing characters in this game, and my personal favorite is Kainé, a truly strong character. It’s 35 hours of a depressing narrative, but every second of it is worth the time.

    i really like this game in a very dragon age lite kind of way. i reviewed it better because the action is quicker hack n slash, but the repetitive music got to me in areas i had trouble advancing through. definetly a overlooked square enix gem.

All get a nice slot in Nier and all work considerbly well.

    The storyline can be slow but it's certainly intriguing and once the "big reveal" occurs the game allows you to re-play through for up to four different endings that equipped with the new information you've gained from your first playthrough allows you to look at your character's situation in the world in a completely new light. The main plot centers around Nier and his sick daughter Yonah and follows his quest to cure her of a deadly plague. It sounds like a standard-fare story but it is really well written and certainly avoids cheesy dialogue. Nier and his companion Grimoire Weiss have excellent banter over literally every subject matter in the game and other companions contribute in good fashion including motor-mouth Kaine.

    A minor point of negative is the a-typical over-dramatisation of some cut scenes. There seriously no need for it. Some amusing 'that would kill anyone' moments abound as well but they can easily be overlooked unless you seriously hate that kind of thing.

    There's plenty of mini games such as fishing and farming. Both are decent additions but the time constraints on farming (it can take fourty hours of real time for a plant to grow for example) makes you wonder if it's really the right sort of mini-game for those who perhaps aren't going to play on a daily basis to tender to their crops. But this is a minor complaint and easily gotten around through either planning or exploiting the system clock.

    A negative to note; if there is any intention to platinum the game then Nier will take a while due to it's collectathon nature. You need to collect tons of rare resources to gain some of the loftier trophies and there's plenty of time-based challenges which require skipping a sizeable amount of cutscenes. These really shouldn't be here because really the storyline needs to be played through as-intended and not rushed for the sake of a few trophies. Definately get this game, it's an excellent game with a wonderful charm and an excellent father-daughter tale.    … Expand

    I never managed to finish this game when I bought and for almost a decade it stood there taking dust: it was after playing Nier Automata that I got the will to try again, managing to clear it once and for all. I guess Nier automata wasn't so bad if it made me want to play this one!

    Either way, Nier - or its actual name Nier Gestalt - is an action RPG where you play the role of, well,    I never managed to finish this game when I bought and for almost a decade it stood there taking dust: it was after playing Nier Automata that I got the will to try again, managing to clear it once and for all. I guess Nier automata wasn't so bad if it made me want to play this one!

    Either way, Nier - or its actual name Nier Gestalt - is an action RPG where you play the role of, well, "Nier" whose task is to save Yonah from a disease called the "Black Scrawl". While in Gestalt you play the role of a father, in Replicant you'd play the brother but both games are identical no matter what.

    Anyway, the game is an action styled RPG which means you have weapons to take and use, initially starting with 1h swords and eventually adding 2handed and spears to the mix. You also have magic to use alongside weapon attacks, split into normal and "special" which is different for each type of weapon (1h does a small nudge that can push back, spears do a lunge and 2handed does an AoE attack around you). You can dodge and parry and overall the magic you have is plenty enough to let you experiment, including words that augment your weapons and magic.

    What doesn't work in the end is the lack of polish: graphically this game is terrible and chugs frames, the combat is sluggish and there's not even a lock-on option, enemies are all the same and only have 2 variants (armored and not armored) magic is good but only a few spells are worth the effort, leveling is grindy and uneventful, the world is small and only has a few areas with no dungeons (there are only 5 cities) and overall it's mediocre on many levels.

    However, it's the story that makes it all the worthwhile: the story starts very slowly and will take you a while to enjoy it to its fullest, but once things start it gets intriguing and you want to see the end. Characters are all likable and they get some very good screentime of their own - I especially enjoyed Kainè's story after the first ending - and the music is SUPERB, probably one of my favorite music of all time and I constantly listen on repeat.

    And one thing that I love about this game's story is that it doesn't try so hard to be interesting: the story is all about how humans can easily fail because of their emotions and how not everything can go to plan and they have to cope with it. It's deep but not pretentious like automata, where half of the sad scenes were so shoved in that it was hilarious and often made no sense. In Gestalt I was legitimately sad because characters you knew and loved from quests or the story could disappear at any time - in that regard, the quests are really good too, many good and bittersweet stories that were legitimately enjoyable to do - and none felt that pretentious or forced in: **** happens", that's what I thought....even though some deaths still felt forced and not all that fleshed out, but overall they were all pretty good.

    Do I recommend the game? Absolutely: Nier Gestalt was quite an enjoyable trip and unlike Automata, which was a chore from start to end, here you aren't required to replay the entire game 3 times but only from the middle end.

    The game has also 4 endings, ABCD, but ending D is the infamous one where it deletes your save file AND UNLIKE NIER AUTOMATA ENDING E this isn't optional and will require you to delete your save file for good...and considering I spent nearly 70 hours completing this game to 100% it was pretty tough to see all my progress being wiped out.

    Still, if you enjoyed Automata, this game will definitely make you enjoy it even more and if you come from Automata you'll enjoy all the references you'll see.
    And maybe I'll get to enjoy Automata a bit more, who knows....    … Expand

    If you haven't played Nier do yourself a favor a play it now, it's a gem of a game and has be unjustly brought down by graphics-whores and simplistic minded official reviewers, take the people's word for it and ignore all those "official reviews" that rated it down, you won't regret it.    … Expand

    A very fun game. It does have a lot of technical glitches and the graphics aren't very good. The music is amazing though and the gameplay keeps you thinking about how to beat it, without being too difficult. The story is good and I cared about the characters a lot. Recommended.

    Having allies with massive hitboxes around them so you cannot walk into them is one thing. Having that hitbox obstruct and slow down your movement is another. Consistently teleporting the allies in front of you as you're trying to run through a hallway is another thing. It forces me to have to jump everywhere to maintain some speed because otherwise they'll stop in front of me and do crap all and halt me in place.
    The controls do not feel tight. There's driving controls for humans as well as attacking. That means all your attacks will attack in a circle instead of reflecting the angles you push on the stick. The majority of weapons are also useless.
    The game is very short. You can very easily beat it within 15 hours. You can probably run through the game in 8 hours if you stick to the critical path without any speed run tactics.
    The game has multiple endings but unfortunately they don't really add so much for what they ask in return and mostly felt like padding fore more playtime in the end. As does most of this game. I don't need an 80 hour scrawling RPG, but if the game is built to be 15 hours, I'd appreciate the systems respecting that time frame.
    I do like how the teammates are useful in combat and cut-scenes though and can actually kill things. I also like the overall art direction and sound. Except for the shades. The shades are lame. Soundtrack good, shades lame.

    TLDR; Lots of ideas that didn't come together well and then ridiculous RNG based drop rates to pad out the length of the game.    … Expand

The mix of different genres within this game works incredibly well, while it's first and foremost an action RPG, there are also more puzzle-focused and action-centric sections. The player has to do a lot of (story and side) quests, which work very well, but require some running, between possibly far apart locations. After a while you get mounts, but it still takes some time between locations. The load times when you switch between areas are unfortunately really long, sometimes a couple of minutes, which which is a pity.
    The cut scenes look great, the in-game graphics are only average and for some reason it only a little better than PS2 quality, probably because the texture detail is not very high, the polygon count itself looks fine to me. After a while, the graphics become less of an issue as you get more and more immersed into the world of NIER.

    the highlight of this games gameplay is its bosses…
    they don’t look cool or offer anything new… but they’re the most fun to deal with as the rest of the game is pretty empty and fairly boring to go through…
    Every enemy looks and feels the same...
    The only thrill you get is the possibility of a new weapon drop or a new word drop that you can assign to your weapon or magic to buff a stat…
    And the design of the levels you go too all feel very generic and uninspired…
    you’re over them within the first few moments you visit them…
    and unfortunately for you, the 2nd half of the game is revisiting all of these places all over again for a piece of a key to get to the final spot in the game…
    Thankfully the pacing of this game is still pretty perfect.. It doesn’t waste your time and its checkpoints are great…
    It focuses on challenging you rather than frustrating you…
    Is Nier this hidden masterpiece that everyone makes it out to be?
    No, in fact I feel it’s highly over praised and over rated by the gaming community…
    But it still have a beautiful story and a great cast of characters who I feel really make this game all that it is…

I only played it to get some background info on the world before playing NieR: Automata, but I was sucked in by the wonderful score, likable yet flawed characters, visually and conceptually interesting world, and compelling narrative.     The control and options for combat that one has over Nier is rather limited. NO cool combos by yourself or your AI team mates, basic dodge and finisher, weapons provide different range, speed and trajectory of attack.
    Nier gives the player a lot of options to deviate from the main arc by doing mini-quests. Thankfully they are not compulsory as they can seem rather forced in nature and a little out of character for the protagonist at times.
    Leveling just makes your stronger. No options for customization of skills.
    The soundtrack is originally moving and a rather melancholic. This is great in small doses, but can become dry after hours of game play.
    Control over character: 6.5 (Very limited – Limited attack type, combos or room for strategy)
    Interactivity with Environment: 6.0 (Adequate. )
    Story: 8.5 (Decent story. A bit on the melancholic side. Intriguing characters.)
    Features: 5.5 (Nothing special here)
    Soundtrack: 8.0 (Though it does get depressing after a couple of hours of game play)
    Challenge: 5.0

    Overall score:8.0

You will blow by the entire game thinking how shallow the gameplay is and how bad the graphics are, and will miss some of the games aspects like using magic timely, crafting or finding many of its ridiculously fun and varied weapons, or missing out on some genuinely fun (if not flawed) quests. Hard mode however, requires you to know the gameplay mechanics inside and out. It can be frustrating as hell, but like the Souls serious which is praised for doing the same thing, Hard mode in this game can be incredibly rewarding. Boss fights are as intricate and fast paced as games like DMC, Monster Hunter, etc. The characters, story, and insane plot are the most twisted I've seen in gaming since Metal Gear Solid. The music! I honestly did not move one from certain dialogues between characters in more than one occassion just because the music was perfect and really gives the game its own charm. The game also tries to experiment with some platforming ideas, visual novel game play, bullet hell areas, and even fishing. I will say that the world can be quite small, and there can be a lot of back tracking, but nothing too out of the ordinary of a game like Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Graphics-wise, this game is a let down I will admit. I personally found the graphics charming since it reminded me of an old retro game back in the ps2 era, but being a game for ps3 I see how it can go under fire about this. While this game is definitely not for everyone, it really does reward the most loyal and hardcore RPG fans that stay with it until one of the most satisfying endings of all time. It has 4 endings all of which you would give you the most complete story and experience, and even though you will definitely go through frustrating experiences, stick with it and I promise you it will be worth it. I recommend this game for hardcore players of games like Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma, but with an amazing story and cast of characters that you won't forget. Just listening to the amazing OST is reason enough to play the game through until the ending (let alone four times!). Overall, this has been one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had as a gamer, and if you give it a real chance to master its intricate gameplay (on hard mode), and you follow the story along until the end, I guarantee you will love this game, 9.5/10.     After 8 years, it's still the most beautiful thing I've ever experienced. Give it a try if you can handle JRPGs, tragedy, and research outside of the game to put all of the pieces together (after you've completed it). The game has something special that no other piece of entertainment has matched yet. It might just become your favorite too.

    This game is good. I like characters, story is great, music is awesome. But some game features are controversial (the passage of the same fragment with minimal changes and Forest of Myth on second playthrough, lol).
    All in all, this game is a prime example of that a good game can be created without huge budgets.

Yoko Taro-san was not the single writer of the story of Nier 1 (the story was also written by Sawako Natori and Kikuchi Hana) but he was the director. Nevertheless, the story is probably one of the most emotional and touching stories dragging you into a game world that you will ever get toEverytime you hear or read something about the Drakengard franchise the name "Taro Yoko" pops up. Whether it is Nier Replicant, the version where Nier is a 16-year old brother of the girl Yonah or the almost 40 year old father of Yonah in Nier Gestalt, the connection between the two will surely get you at some point. I in particular recommend the father version because that in my opinion is the true gold of the franchise and qualifies as the second best game of all time for me. The story about a father/brother doing everything for his daughter/sister to find a cure for her and at the same time being introduced to a world that is overall very much to be pitied, highlighted by one of the best soundtracks you can find in a game will keep you spellbound for a long time. Sure, graphically it might not be the best game or from an overall technical standpoint but in exchange you get a very special game that is unlike others. I could say a lot more about Nier. But truth be told, the more I would say about the story, the more I would have to hold back to not spoil too much. It flat-out is a really good Action-RPG and you should at least give it a chance. And yes, it totally works fine even if you do not know Drakengard. There are only very minor details that you can look up but the main parts of the story are in the game - with very, very few exceptions, such as stuff that for example points that are explained in the book "Grimoire Nier" but overall the important stuff is still told.

    If you like Nier 2 Automata, get Nier 1. I would recommend it way more actually and Nier 2 is already a masterpiece.    … Expand

That being said, the story is easily the most impressive part of this game, being unconventional, strange, dark, but ultimately satisfying in its execution and nuance. Yoko Taro's style of storytelling is immensely unique and memorable, though as previouslyBefore playing this game, you need to ask yourself how much clunky gameplay you're willing to tolerate for an otherwise amazing story. That being said, the story is easily the most impressive part of this game, being unconventional, strange, dark, but ultimately satisfying in its execution and nuance.     Nier, to put it simply, is a masterpiece, disguising itself as a mediocre action hack 'n slash.
    It may begin as one thing, but I promise you, by the end, it will ave subverted all of your expectations.
    The unique thing about it is how it almost forces you to play through it multiple times, as each subsequent playthrough re-contextualizes the whole story.
    Truly a very special game.

    Yoko Taro best game so far. If you love games it doesn't matter the technical aspects ;) This is one of the best PS3 games on my library. Go check Drakengard Ending E and plot before starting NieR.

    The only spoiler/protip I'll give is when you get the fishing rod, go to the other beach to get the fish you need to progress.     The premise, if not the lore, is quite simple: we follow the exploits of Nier looking for a way to cure his daughter Yonah of a lethal disease from this medieval future called the Black Scrawl. In his adventure, he encounters several and eccentric companions as well as uncover the secret of why the current state of the world is as it is.

    The combat is simple, it has a three attack basic combo, charge attack, and a variety of magic attacks, it is pretty noticeable that the developers took inspiration from action games such as Devil May Cry and God of War, more likely the latter, still, it lacks the depth and impact of those games and it is more of a first stage version of those combat systems. The combat, aside from being simple it works for the most part, it is not that fun, but it is not terrible either, sure is better than those you find in DMC 2 or Dirge of Cerberus.

    The difficulty is sadly another unbalanced aspect of the game, I started playing in normal and it seemed fine at first; enemies did a fair amount of damage and so do I, but pretty soon, I noticed that my attacks were taking big chunks of health from my enemies. I did some side questing in between but nothing too heavy to overpower myself that much, and by the end of the 'first act' I was simply rushing through everything, so I switched to hard difficulty instead.

    Hard mode is peculiar, it certainly adds more challenge but in a very frustrating way. Enemies hit harder but their defense or HP is a joke considering their attack patterns and projectiles are telegraphed is not that hard to evade them. Only a few of the battles were thrilling, and the majority of them were more endurance tests.

    Nier (the character) starts at first somewhat as a blank slate, he doesn't seem to be very opinionated in any regard but the more you play the more you get to know that he is a pretty sweet guy that just happens to be big and muscular, he knows what rough life is like and for that reason he likes to help people if it is in his possibilities, one could say that he's simple-minded. But with the same ferocity he chooses to help people he annihilates his enemies without a second thought. It may look that narratively these two sides don't get well, but in the context of the game, it makes all the sense, this is a cruel and cynical world after all.

    In your adventure, you'll encounter a wide variety of eccentric and interesting people and some of them even join you in your journey to save your daughter. Although they start somewhat dull at first, the more you advance, the more you'll get to know them and the interactions get more interesting, and they offer more points of view to the side questing, I don't want to spoil or sound repetitive, but I liked a lot how the game questions a lot of conventions from RPGs and adventure games in general.

    The world-building is one of the game’s positive points, as I told you it is a cruel world, so NPCs alike will have motives to their backstories that range from depression to revenge in the rawest of ways, at times you’ll question yourself if helping somebody out was the right call. Although there’s sometimes a ray of hope, one can only feel pessimistic about everything even when you’re on the same page as the always positive Nier. The game has an experimental side to it also.

    Overall the acting is OK at its best, bad on average, and pretty awful on its worse. After beating the game I look for the Japanese audio for some events and it was heartbreaking to see how everything was almost different in a good way, as always with this kind of issue, I felt robbed from my experience.

    Although not everything related to sound in this game is bad, the music for a change is incredibly good. NIER’s world is depressing but it has a wide variety in regards to levels, and the music accompanies them beautifully, it has no right being this good but here we have it.

    NIER can be rough around the edges; its combat might not be that polished and the voice acting takes away too much from the experience, but after everything is said and done, I’m glad that I did play after all. Its themes and characters give me a lot to think about, and while maybe you need to do some meta-research to get the full grasp of everything, you can have quite the journey even with the bad aspects and all. I think this Yoko Taro rawly cut diamond can offer you a lot, maybe he and his team didn’t achieve the heights they achieve with NieR: Automata, not by a long shot, but there is certainly a brilliant aspect to NIER if only by glimpses.    … Expand

    Nier must be the most severely underrated game ever released. Just look at the average metascore.
    Most reviewers probably only played ending A, and missed out the entire point of the game's story and themes.

    I bought this game because I played Automata and wanted more NieR-verse. The graphics are a little dull, the mechanics aren't anything special and it's not as polished as N:A, as Platinum wasn't apart of the project. I still enjoyed the game though. The characters, plot, and boss fights were very enjoyable.

    Rather mediocre graphics. Most side-quests are boring and requires grinding. But plot, characters, music and gameplay mechanics are just great. If graphics is not that important to you, I highly recommend Nier.

    This game was beautiful. Such an amazing story and the characters really grow on you.
    The gameplay was a lot of fun, but there was some parts that really felt like a grind. (fishing... and collecting... ugh) But outside of that, the gameplay was great!
    Fully recommend the game.

    Nier won't wow players with its basic mechanics, but in the story it tells, the characters it develops, and the themes present throughout play, it will easily win over anyone seeking something emotionally exploratory and well off the beaten path.
