Nier is a story-driven adventure role playing game. After years of gaming experience and then come back for this I would say I'm not expecting that much. The graphic looks very terrible even by the standard of 2010. Let alone some wired game design and hardly good combat system. However, the unique story telling is the only thing that cavia had once offered, and they did a good job. ThisNier is a story-driven adventure role playing game. This game is still outstanding in some aspects and I think I actually enjoyed this game, so it's not that bad. Expand

When I played this game it became my most loved game on the PS3 and in general ever, the music is transcendent, the game play is fun af and the bosses are some of the best I have ever experienced and the story is so powerful, although I understand that japan has "replicant" in which the main character is a brother but I am honestly glad I got "gestalt" in which the main is the fatherWhen I played this game it became my most loved game on the PS3 and in general ever, the music is transcendent, the game play is fun af and the bosses are some of the best I have ever experienced and the story is so powerful, although I understand that japan has "replicant" in which the main character is a brother but I am honestly glad I got "gestalt" in which the main is the father because a father daughter bond is more powerful than a brother sister one. This game is a hidden gem, as i only know one other person who has played it. He is also the one who suggested it to me. If you do decide to pick it up make sure to give it a couple hours of play time, it starts off a bit slow, but really gets going. Also make sure to do some of the alternate endings as some of them are great. I wish i could just be picking this up for the first time now, but guess ill just have to settle for a second playthrough. Expand

Nier focuses on character interactions, character depth and story depth, merely delievers the primitive and old form of battle system from the past (Hack&Slash) and beautifully neglects adventure elements like solving demanding puzzles or to find items to forward the gameplay. The group of the protagonists and their character depth promote the gameplay. Considering the different endings, which underline the story depth, the insanely beautiful soundrack and the amazing atmosphere, Yoko Taro created a masterpiece in the role-playing game history. The one game with the best story and music (better than Automata for me), but it's recommended to read about the story as not everything is covered in the game and some things stay unclear. But don't spoil the story. Read about what happened before nier and read a bit during gameplay. Not 10/10 as a bit too much grinding necessary to upgrade weapons and it gets repetitive to get all endings.

Excellent game story told from both side of the perspective. From main protagonists perspective to antagonists perspective

Nier is one of those rare, special creations that takes full advantage of its artistic medium, telling its story in a way that only a videogame can, often integrating its gameplay, visuals and mechanics into the narrative to enhance the tonal magnitude or dramatic impact of some scenarios. This stylistic heterogeneity doesn't define the gameplay structure alone, but also its framing, with frequently shifting camera angles even during combat. This gives each setting and battle scenario a distinct flare, amplified by the beautiful tracks perfectly conveying the peaceful anguish of this world. The blend of Action RPG and 3D Bullet-Hell gives combat a unique multifaceted feel, but the extremely limited amount of offensive options and their lack of depth slowly marks a painful repetitiveness in the gameplay flow, aggravated by a disappointing enemy variety and areas that are way too big for their own good, leaving players to traverse great lengths of nothingness. The story, as stated, frequently twists and influences the gameplay to better convey itself, even offering multiple endings to fully flesh out its many tender tragedies. Its fictional concepts are creative and the cutscene direction excellent but the narrative is so unrelentingly focused on its depressing and bleak atmosphere that it eventually ends up making the player mostly numb to it. That, coupled with a fluctuating pacing that often awkwardly jumps into climactic, lore-heavy moments without the proper buildup, ultimately reduces the emotional weight of it all.

This was better than I expected it to be, though it was still just only ok.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are games that come out of brilliant minds,Or maybe come from creative studios, but there are also games that come out of Sick minds like Yoko Taro,And Nier is no exception. You start playing thinking it's a standard hack and slash and find yourself with your favorite game of all time! Without a doubt, for 2010 the graphics are terrible and seem to have come out of a Playstation 2, but what it lacks in graphics, it delivers with its OST which for me is considered top 3 in the world (even its remake won the game awards on the soundtrack)A story is also wonderful with a plot twist that would make anyone question their actions in the game. You can beat him between 15 and 20 hours in your first gameplay and I particularly took 70 hours to Platinum him (and I'm writing this review at the exact moment where I platinumed) The game does not cease to amaze with its story and captivating characters, whether playing with Father Nier or Brother Nier the game delivers what the player needs, and yet is not afraid to make the player cry,There are also criticisms of the game, one of which is its Level system where it is almost impossible to gain Levels because the experience required is very high for each level gained (experience that is easily gained by completing the story) also your quests that are tedious and uncreative, and especially the repetition of songs that can make a lost player get irritated by listening to the same song for 30 minutes! But in the end it's a game worth playing, if you want a "Family" apocalipse story even better than The Last of Us, come play,Platinum is not that hard and there are only 4 or 5 trophies that are impossible to get easily! Nier won't wow players with its basic mechanics, but in the story it tells, the characters it develops, and the themes present throughout play, it will easily win over anyone seeking something emotionally exploratory and well off the beaten path.
  2. A bizarre mix of influences and a great script still can't save this inventive but flawed role-player.
  3. Nier comes with a bizarre mix of influences and its own accomplishments. Not all of it works, but it's a commendable effort, and a great experience.
