Jun 23, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive is a blast to play. The controls are perfect, the gameplay is engaging thanks to the collision system, and the vehicles, riders, and tracks all look great – not to mention one of the best online racing experiences this year. It's a shame that these elements are packaged into such a bare-bones game. For $40, I can definitely recommend it to fans of the series. In the future, however, here's to hoping that THQ will take these same gameplay mechanics and build around them a full-fledged racing career experience.

PSM3 Magazine UKJun 4, 2011As a racer, it's an improvement over Reflex. [July 2011, p.94]
-
May 14, 2011This review might feel like a complaint towards THQ. It is but not entirely. Truth is: MX vs ATV Alive isn't only fun but also addictive and well-worth the $40 price of entrance. However, those who have been enjoying the heck out of Reflex will feel like someone punch them in the gut.

May 23, 2011What if this game did throw in a standard, nondescript career mode? Would it be worth the price then? What if everything was unlocked to start and it was the same low price? What if it had the career mode, all the unlockables, all the stuff you could get online, all the features ready to go, and even more game modes, all for the same low price? Well then we may be talking about a game that you would be crazy to pass up. Unfortunately that's not the game we have here.
-
May 23, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive is a mid-priced game with the most important elements of the preview parts. But for the ultimate experience you have to buy downloadable content. Besides of that MX vs. ATV Alive is a decent off the road racer with good handling and different events. Only the graphics aren't impressive.
-
May 21, 2011A noteworthy MX simulator which will entertain those who are not even fans of motorcycles, thanks to its thrilling and challenging races, although a bit short in content.
-
Jun 9, 2011Judged purely on its racing, MX vs. ATV: Alive is a good game. But that's not what most people will judge it on.
-
Jun 20, 2011As a racing game, MX vs. ATV Alive is fantastic. The controls are near perfect, the action is always intense, and it's just a fun game to play. Unfortunately, a bad system for unlocking new stuff and a severe lack of content really hold Alive back from reaching its full potential. Hopefully THQ delivers some quality downloadable content in the coming months, because if any game deserves it, it's MX vs. ATV Alive.
-
Jun 13, 2011Overall, this game is good, the game play is a nice step up for the genre, all the components are there that could have made this a great game, and it's just that it is not presented ideally.
-
Jun 2, 2011With nothing really new to add, Rainbow Studios published a game that is fun, but can't really deliver anything memorable. It's ideal mostly for newcomers to the franchise.
-
May 30, 2011The quality and low price and make this game worthy of at least a rental, if not a purchase, but if you're expecting more from your off-road racing title, go with MX vs. ATV Reflex for now and wait to see if there's enough content for this game to warrant a look.
-
May 29, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive is a decent racing game that has excellent controls and a ton of customizable options. It's too bad that there just aren't that many circuits and the lack of a tutorial might put off people that are new to the franchise.
-
May 21, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive takes what was new about Reflex and tweaks it subtly, though the lack of a traditional career mode ends up hurting the game more than helping it.
-
May 16, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive is a pretty good experience. It's fun and addictive and well-worth the low price of entrance.
-
May 12, 2011Whether it's more or less value for money than usual is up for debate but in purely game terms this is the best MX Vs. ATV yet.
-
May 10, 2011It's a shame that the career structure isn't better considering I like the new XP format and the fact that your rider unlocks skills as you go. You can select two skills at any one time, and they include helpful boosts like increased clutch effectiveness or faster crash recovery time. THQ is promising additional DLC through its MotoClub Depot, but enough has been taken out of the game in the first place that I don't think you can gain it all back simply by adding some new gear.
-
May 12, 2011This game has a serious lack of gameplay modes. However, the XP system is a lot of fun for anyone who likes to customize their racer down right down to the tiniest detail.
-
Jul 12, 2011Alive offers a great racing experience. It's just a shame that everything outside of the actual racing is sub standard. The frustrating levelling up system almost ruined the entire experience for me and the lack of tutorials leaves a lot to be desired.
-
Jul 9, 2011The great game mechanics need to be supplemented by some more game types and tracks, and an XP system that is not a wreck. A step in the wrong direction from THQ.
-
May 24, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive is plenty of fun, but not nearly as complete or polished as other racers released during this generation.
-
May 20, 2011A thrilling and attractive racer, MX vs ATV: Alive is a fundamentally good game, but the serious lack of content and repetitive progression prevents it from being great.
-
May 19, 2011A sad example of a game that has so much going for it, but lacks the content to back it up. The game plays great, is a blast online and contains moments of brilliance, but its lack of any kind of tutorial, career structure and just plain content really drag it down.
-
May 16, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive has the potential to be a very good racing game, but right now, it's sorely in need of more content.
-
Jul 10, 2011The biggest thing lacking though is structure. There are no tournaments or event series for you to compete in. Every race is a single race and it just gets so boring to the casual race fan. All of these annoying gameplay issues plus the horrible so-called HD graphics really makes it hard for me to recommend this game to any but the most faithful fans of the franchise. There are brief moments of fun, but with all the other racing games out there you might want to look at one of those before buying or even renting this one.
-
Jun 27, 2011It remains the best of its genre, but unfortunately it is too similar to its predecessor.
-
Jun 15, 2011MX vs. ATV Alive tries to address gamers in a new way, but succeeds only partially with this mission. The oddly chosen structure with experience points and the lack of a red line to follow, make playing the game feel more like doing chores, while the fun factor's supposed to have the upper hand. When the chores are done though, a decent motocross game shines through and the fun commences. Just don't expect a lot to have changed since its predecessor played the field.
-
Jun 15, 2011What we have here is a strange case. You have a fun, unique racing game surrounded by bad ideas. I still can't get over the fact that there is DLC in the box but literally two tracks until you hit level ten. And no, I don't want to pay for more.
-
May 27, 2011The need to grind before you can unlock more, admittedly well designed, tracks and areas is bothersome but the rewards for doing so are ample enough that it is certainly worth sticking it out if you're ready for your next mud-spattered racer.
-
Jun 20, 2011MX Vs ATV Alive is not a bad game: it has good gameplay mechanics, good AI drivers and a discrete control system. But the serious lack of content, the lack of a true Career Mode, the repetitive progression of events and some technical issues drag it down.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKJul 17, 2011What excitement there is gets suffocated by the inert tracks. [Aug 2011, p.107]
-
Jun 22, 2011MX vs ATV Alive has decent gameplay going for it, and though the controls and rider reflex mode can cause some head scratching moments, they rarely detract from a race's enjoyment. However, the big problem with the game is that there isn't much of it, and what little there is of it at the start must be completed over and over again far beyond the point of entertainment. Until you get those small nibbles of new content, MX vs ATV Alive is a grindfest.
-
Jun 10, 2011Despite solid handling, MX vs ATV Alive feels like an oddly incomplete game. There's little structure to the singleplayer mode, only a small handfull of maps available when you start, and it's a long repetitive grind to unlock the remaining small handfulls of maps. Quickly becomes tedious due to lack of content.
-
Playstation: The Official Magazine (US)Jun 7, 2011Instead of a solid experience, it feels crippled; a complete game thoughtlessly hacked into DLC bits. [July 2011, p.81]
-
Jun 2, 2011Not very appealing to look at or to listen to. Or to play, even.
-
May 31, 2011The lack of a "real" Career Mode, the "freemium" content-unlock structure and some technical issues, make of MX vs ATV Alive one of the worst chapters of the long-lasting THQ series.
-
May 27, 2011MX vs ATV Alive doesn't do itself any favours. It races well, and it's great fun alongside other humans, but it seeks too much of a commitment.
-
May 20, 2011Don't be fooled by this empty box. For some 40 euros you'll get an endless grinding of a few tracks, and not even a quarter of the content that Reflex had. A bad move, better left on the shelves.
-
Play UKJun 26, 2011A bold experiment, but one that ends up being a heap of cynical, misguided half-game. [Issue#206, p.86]
-
May 30, 2011I'd like to say that MX vs. ATV Alive is a game for motocross purists, but I feel even that is a stretch. It's just not a very good game, even at the budget price.
-
Jul 29, 2011That said Alive comes across as rushed and to be honest, could probably have been released as a DLC pack to Reflex. Terrible career mode unlock system and progression combined with difficult and frustrating handling means this game will only appeal to fans of the MX vs. ATV series.
-
May 24, 2011The only thing that can possibly be complimented with Alive would be a few vague ideas with the potential for fun; but grading on those alone is hardly enough. Whatever the game could have been is smothered in the dirt.
