I thought this was a pretty solid game. The combat was pretty well done and fun, even though you could easily just get by with mashing and occasional blocks, still, there was the opportunity for more if you really wanted to make the game more fun.

The characters in the game didn't have a whole lot of personality to them until you were halfway through the game, then Raiden got more interesting, but a lot of the enemies were fairly generic for the most part. The story was pretty good though, so that helped to make up for a lot of that.

As a whole I had a lot of fun playing this game. It's nowhere near one of the best hack and slash games I've ever played, but it's still a good game, and I'm glad I was able to play through it, even if it went by really quickly, and a huge chunk of that was the final battle.

You need to think about what you are doing and use some tatics which is great 'cause otherwise this could have been a very generic and straightforward 'mash the control pad' now game. Gameplay is fun and rewarding although slightly flawed when it comes to a few sections (like boss fights and taking down aerial foes) I had difficulty with having to juggle all the buttons including holding down the necessary enemy targeting one and getting frustrated when the camera swoops around to where you don't want it be only for you completely botch up a successful parry and leave you wide open to attack. QT events are back! Not too bad though so don't worry often turning up when you're about to say goodbye to the latest boss. Stealth options feel limiting and tacked on too which is a shame. I also felt a bit stupid and vunerable standing in one spot with the projectile weapons compared to when I feel like I'm invincible as I'm darting around at 60mph cutting off limbs off my foes. I also can't help feeling 'Hmmmm this would have been great on the Wii U with motion control' so I could accurately slice and dice to my hearts content. I do have to say I absolutley love the over the top cut scenes style and presentation are top notch (ok the story is a little weak but who cares) and reminiscent of the 90s anime style series and movies. Purely solo-player with a campaign that will prob last you about 6-7 hours for the first play through is fine, it never feels like it should be longer and that you're missing out as there is the option to go back to conquer higher difficulties, find those missing collectibles and so forth, as well as take part in Artificial Reality styled missions outside of the main game. Overall if you enjoyed games like Bayonetta (made by the same people) you'll enjoy this. Metal Gear fans will also get a kick out of Raiden and the various Konami franchise's offerings sprinkled throughout the game Expand

This is a fun and challenging game, but ultimately flawed.
The combat system shines, but gets very repetitive. Also, the camera sucks and the game absolutely needed a dedicated defense or dodge button. The item system is also mess. If you run out of lives, you're basically screwed in some boss fights. Boss fights are good, but nothing really made me care about the characters. Actually,

In the end this can be a fun and challenging game to pass your time, due to the combat being cool, but its flaws make it hard for me to recommend it to anyone. Even to MGS fans.

I honestly didn't like this game at first. It had a lot working against it: The terrible wuss-rock soundtrack that seemed to come on every single time things started to get interesting and completely killed the mood (at least you can turn the music off in settings); the forced stealth sections which completely break the flow of the game and which don't really give you any clear ideaI honestly didn't like this game at first. It had a lot working against it: The terrible wuss-rock soundtrack that seemed to come on every single time things started to get interesting and completely killed the mood (at least you can turn the music off in settings); the forced stealth sections which completely break the flow of the game and which don't really give you any clear idea what's going to send an enemy into alert, and the combat was just so-so, at least I thought, and as funny as hacking people up in slowmo and taking out there spine was, it got real old real fast.

So, I played the first couple of stages and then it went back on my shelf, where it sat gathering dust while I contemplated selling it back for a pathetic fraction of what I paid for it on release. But then I gave the game another try, this time I began to better understand the parry system, which the game does a baffling poor job of explaining to you considering how many tutorials you have to wade through at the beginning. Parrying adds an exhilarating element to combat; it becomes all about perfect reaction timing and less about stringing together the same combo chains whenever you see an opening like so many other current hack'n'slash titles. Now I can't stop playing this game.

It still has its flaws; it's waaaaay too short, main campaign is only about 5-6 hours; the additional VR missions aren't very fun and don't play to the games strengths; again, the music is terrible and doesn't match the feel of the game at all; those forced stealth sections are extremely annoying and unnecessary; waaay too many quick time events (can that **** just stop being in games), and if you miss your window for them they're often gone immediately, nothings more frustrating then effectively parrying and stunning an enemy, then having your figure slip and putting in 1 extra hit and missing your opportunity for an instant take down. But the good out weighs the bad, and the combat is just so addictive. It's not as good as, let's say, Devil May Cry 3, but seeing as there's been such a dearth of well made games like this lately, it's s certainly a step in the right direction. Here's hoping there's a sequel!

One day, Raiden and his team are attacked by a rogue PMC called Desperado. The leader of the attack team is a mysterious swordsman known as Jetstream Sam, and another samurai called Sundowner. The two of them kill the African president Raiden is protecting, and seriously injure Raiden. 2 weeks later, Raiden is back with a new cyborg body, ready to bring down Desperado. From there the story unfolds. The gameplay is pretty similar to Bayonetta's mixed in with the Blade Mode ability that allows you to slow down time a slice an enemy in any direction you choose. Most of the game, you will be fighting the enemies from MGS4, except slicing them to bits, not filling them with lead. The story is nothing to be commended for, it doesn't compete with MGS4's narrative by any stretch of the imagination. The boss fights have to be commended though. These boss fights are so amazing, they even stack up against MGS3's boss fights, they're that good. Overall Metal Gear Rising is not worth buying at full price, but worth a rent, or a cheap purchase. And even if Metal Gear Solid fans don't like it, they have Ground Zeroes to play instead. Expand

The gameplay holds up pretty well, it's very fast, smooth and fun, however, the controls can sometimes be bad and irresponsive.
You can unlock new weapons and pieces of equipment to use, so even if it gets repetitive, you can always switch to different combat styles and keep things fresh.
The parry mechanic is very weird, sometimes it doesn't work correctly, but when it does it feels very satisfying!
It's worth to mention that this the only game where your sword cuts through everything, from enemy limbs to objects, walls and even bridges.

Now for the story, it's weak but it has some nice symbolisms, and incredible set-pieces full of action and suspense. Sadly it's a very short game, but the pacing is good, the game never gets boring or tedious.

The boss fights are the best thing about this game, legit some of the best bosses I've ever fought, and the music is the cherry on top.
Infact the whole soundtrack is fantastic, every song is a banger.

I do wish the level design was more creative though, most areas look exactly the same, and the environment looks boring.
Also the camera can be a pain in the ass sometimes, it automatically focuses on enemies you don't want to attack and it gets really annoying.

Lastly, the humor and the sarcasm are unbelievable, this game is just hilarious, it knows when to be funny and it knows when to take things seriously.
I feel like this game was made for me, it's my first Metal Gear, and my favorite for sure.

    Final Rating: "Fantastic" ~ 8.5/10.

I also have to give special praise to the games outstanding soundtrack, it truly does get you pumped to fight and is one of the best soundtracks of 2013. Unfortunately the game does have some issues that keep it from being the next big action game. The action is great but I couldn't help feeling like there wasn't enough of it. This is the kind of combat system that has you wanting to slaughter endless hoards of enemies, but the game never gives you more than a few enemies at a time. This is perfectly fine because I was having fun, but I wanted more to kill. Another factor contributing to the feeling of a lack of combat is the short length of the game. I beat the story mode in under 4 hours. The game does have some challenge rooms but I never really got interested in them. The games story is also rough. It's completely bonkers and I honestly don't think I could tell you what is was about, all I remember is something about rescuing children's brains. It makes no sense and frequently pulls you out of the game with its overly long cutscenes and intrusive moments where a supporting cast member will call you and force you to talk to them about crap you don't care about. In the end I did enjoy my time with Revengeance, but felt it was too short. If they make a sequel they need to focus less on their crappy story and more on the fantastic combat system they've created. All in all it's a fun game, but not worth full retail price. Expand

Anyway, the game itself is just so entertaining. The parry system feels very natural to me. For those of you say you just need to mash button, you suck. Every boss will destroy you if you don't learn their moves time your parry and attack. Button mashing only works on those normal enemies. The game itself is not that long, but there are tons of VR mission and a lot of replay value to unlock all the enhancement and upgrades. I never expected this to be as good as Bayonetta, but I was pleasantly surprised. (Not saying it's better than B, but it's a joy to play). This is a game that everyone should at least try. Many games are like this, and none of them are worth full price in my opinion just because there are so many games out there today that you can be playing for 100 hours or more, nevermind the 6 hours is takes to finish this title. So, despite its decent quality and playability, currently it's overpriced. I also didn't like the quality of the cinematics. Bayonetta (another Platinum title) had a similar level of production values in this area which didn't seem to keep pace with other titles in the market. However, despite these issue, the game plays quite well and apes the same upgrade mechanics found in practically every game today. The fast paced gameplay may not be as deep as the likes of Bayonetta and the old DMC games, but feel fluid as much. Te story is silly, unnecessary even. Hm, what's about again? I can't tell, but I don't care. The game kept me busy enough with the awesome bosses fights followed by a KICKASS SOUNDTRACK.

There is a whole storyline about killing for justice, yet you continue to mow enemies down left and right. The characters also feel like cardboard cutouts, as they don't really have any story arks. The gameplay is fast and fun, the controls were a major problem for me. The block/counter button was the same as the attack button. Blade mode is the key feature of this game and it works really well. The action is also fun to watch as the frame rate doesn't drop and graphics as a whole are pretty good. The boss battles can be extremely cheep as well, as they have attacks that can't be blocked or dodged. The campaign is pretty short, but the game has difficult spikes that might take a while a beat. There are also VR Missions, which are not bad, but don't really improve the game as a whole. Metal Gear Rising has a really cool premise but the execution is a bit lacking, and a wouldn't mind a sequel that improves the bad parts of this game. Expand

The good: I went into this game expecting a fun experience and what I got was a high paced action packed thrill ride roller coaster that had me glued to my console for the next 5 hours, which unfortunately means that I finished the game. However, despite its short story I never felt like my time was wasted, but more so time well spent in what was a beautiful mix of over the top action with enough of a serious tone to make you actually believe that raiden is trying to do the impossible even if you think the plot is as silly as this game's name. Another praise worthy note for this game is that there is not much hand holding, your success as Raiden is completely dependent on how much time you take to learn how to combo and link attacks, parry and dodge in what is a master mix of violence. The bad: I mention this in the good section, but this game is just really short, which is a disappointment, but then again I certainly can't imagine how any game team could successfully maintain the type of pace revengeance sets. All good things come to an end. In addition, while the box was a nice touch to fans of the franchise it didn't fit well with the pace of the story and if Kojima was trying to set a different tone with this game I have to question why they decided to add stealth elements. I (being a fans of the Metal Gear Series since Metal Gear Solid 3) rented this game to see if it would live up to expectations. It did this and so much more.

Presentation: Metal Gear Rising is a hack and slash game which branches off from the traditional stealth action of the other Metal Gear games. Although it may be deceiving (Metal Gear hack and slash?) this game is presented in a cool way. You take control of Raiden, the cyborg ninja from Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4. The events of this game take place after all of the other games and the story is a bit random. Although the story was a bit random, the story is told in an amazing way. The story draws you in and makes you feel for these characters. The story and its presentation as a whole were perfect, keeping me playing from beginning to end. 10/10

Graphics: Metal Gear Rising had some good graphics. The problem i had with the graphics is the fact that they didn't not seem to be any better then the amazing graphics of Metal Gear Solid 4 a couple years back (2008). Since Metal Gear Solid 4 was made 5 years ago near the beginning of the Playstation 3, I expected these graphics to be top notch. I was disappointed that they did not live up to that expectation. With that said, the graphics were by no means bad. Graphics were very good any many things looked real but it didn't reach my expected expectations. Characters for the most part seemed to look real and Raiden looked very cool. 9/10

Sound: The Soundtrack to this game deserves 11/10 just for how cool it was but because of other aspects of sound, it doesn't receive a perfect score. Every song used in this game was absolutely flawless. Each song made each battle (especially the battle against a electronic wolf) seem more intense and fun. The music makes every battle seem more important then the last. The negativity against the sound comes from the voice acting. Some voice actors just sucked. To explain, some characters just seemed like cliche remakes of other characters from the series. Only a few characters had great voice actors such as Jetstream Sam, Raiden and BladeWolf. One of the worse voice actors was the voice of a young foreign boy who instead of sounding foreign, just sounded really stupid and ignorant. The sound was the best and worst things of the game. Bellow is an example of the awesome music but bad voice acting. 9/10

Gameplay: The gameplay for Metal Gear Rising is fantastic. Every fight feels new, refreshing and so entertaining. I felt cool fighting in every battle, whether I was fighting giant metal gears or small hand machines (no way to describe). The only thing one has to do to have a perfect gameplay experience is to get past the learning curve. The learning curve in this game is learning the parry system. It may take a few minutes to learn but once it is learned, parrying makes the game not only fun but a lot easier as well. If you cannot learn the parry, then let the raging begin. I suggest downloading the free demo and testing the parry system before playing the full game itself. Once learned, the gameplay is perfect. 10/10

Entertainment: This game was extremely fun. I experienced high levels of rage during 1 particular boss that I continued to die against but besides that, the game was one of the most entertaining games I have played in a long time. 10/10

Replay Value: Like my last game I played (devil may cry) this depends on the kind of person you are. To me, the story was better in Metal Gear Rising but had less things to offer replay wise while DMC offered many different difficulties. Metal Gear Rising gives you more weapons each time you play but like DMC, it is always the same thing again. Although I loved this game and personally could play it again, I would not want to play it over and over again. 5/10

Verdict: Every fan of the Metal Gear series and hack and slash fans: PLAY THIS GAME NOW. Call of Duty fanboys: AVOID THIS GAME. If you have patience, this game is an absolute play. Total rating 8.5/10

Suggested Price: Walmart offers this game for $60 dollars and it includes the game soundtrack. That is defiantly worth the price. If you buy the game from gamestop, wait until it goes down to $40. If you only want to play it once for the story, Rent It. I rented the game and beat it in a days time. This game is worth a try.

A solid action game. The story is a bit wonky, but cutting up enemies is always satisfying. I'm not pleased with the rather short campaign (4-5 hours) nor the bad camera angles at times, but the music and gameplay are very fun. I wish the counter system didn't use the attack button; takes a while to get used to. I would say this game is good for renting, or at a very discounted price.

Great game! Very addicting! There really is not much to criticize about it except that the camera angle can sometimes be in your way during boss battles. I would categorize the game as one of those more challenging games which is one of the reason it always motivates me to upgrade my weapons to conquer the enemies with a sense of accomplishment.

The Metal Gear series EASILY has the best Bosses/Boss battles in gaming history by a long shot. That's where Revengeance falls a little short. This is due to there not being much background or introductions to them, and they're VERY difficult until you figure out, "wow, THAT'S what you gotta do." The bosses did have the MGS feel to them, and starting with Monsoon, were UBER DIFFICULT. It took me about 30 tries to defeat him and the following ones, and that was just on normal. My biggest complaint though is the lack of health regeneration items. Trying to defeat the later bosses with just 1, even on normal, is insane. All in all, it's very SOLID, and can be summed up as a cool Cyborg Fruit Ninja. That's a compliment. Expand

The reactive combat and need to be very precise with your input on higher difficulties makes the game very satisfying to play, but when the camera goes bonkers just because the enemies forces you to consecutively parry and get pushed into the corner makes the game very annoying at the times this happen. The story is more than ok for this type of game and fits nicely into the MG-universe with a corrupt faction hiding behind the law to create a PMC-army for their own agenda. The lack of depth behind all the characters is a bit sad, but to be expected from an action game. Would've been nice to have more fleshed out dialgoues between more characters than only Raiden and the one he calls over the codec, also there is barely any mentioning of any characters personal life.

Solid action game that will fall speak to anyone who enjoy difficult, but not unfair, action games.

Because Hideo Kojima had to focus on the main Series, he scraped the idea with Rising. But, the game was also in developement. So much work for nothing? Eventually, Platinum Games (Bayonetta) has taken over the boat, and finished the game. But it dosen't look like the version Kojima has planned. Rising was planned as a more Action oriented Stealh Game. Also, the whole Beta Stuff showed a lot more gory game. You should also know, the original Story was set after Sons of Liberty.

The final product became a very good game. In other words, it's totally "Solid", even without a Snake in the game. The Action is one of the finest in this Genre for the current Generation. The graphics are detailed (when there is much Action, even Hollywood will say: Chapeau!). The citys are all a bit empty, there is a soul missing. Making them look like abandoned ghost towns.

The Boss Battles are also very unique. They're totally challenging even in the normal mode. Absolute praise goes out to the Soundtrack played when you fight a Boss. This will definitely push you even more.

The overall playtime is a bit short. On the easy mode, you can finish the game in under 5 hours. But there are so many collectibles, you will definitely come back for another playthrough. Don't forget to mention the VR Missions. And there are a lot.

    Verdict:

Raiden was a good character long before Guns of the Patriots and Rising. In Sons of Liberty, his Character was doomed because of the fame of Solid Snake. Kojima did not kill Raiden. He likes him, and he made him for the second time the main protagonist of a game. Making him one of the most Bad Ass Cyborg in Gaming history. 8/10

    Trivia:

The planned main character was the famous Gray Fox. That idea was scrapped. At least, you can play as Gray Fox via the downloadable costume.

Despite only having played 2 MGS games, namely Portable Ops and Peace Walker, I found that this game's plot was easy to understand and had very few references or spoilers to previous MGS games. Most people here and in other sites are giving this game a bad name, but I would like to correct this bad opinion. Let's start with the story (not giving out too many spoilers), it follows Raiden, the ninja turned cyborg from MGS 4 (who was also a child soldier in Liberia) who has joined a private military company (PMC) called Maverick Security. He is disgraced and humiliated after a mission to protect the prime minister of a country in Africa fails and ends with the prime minister being assassinated by another PMC known as Desperado. Raiden then embarks on a quest of vengeance, trying to stop Desperado's plot and also trying to keep his inner demons at bay. Like all MGS games there is a large amount of cutscenes that help move the story along. In one level especially, you'll find yourself feeling just like Raiden, questioning the morality of your actions, and even feeling sorry for the nameless other cyborgs you slaughter. In short, Raiden, despite being a powerful cyborg ninja, is quite a relatable character. For gameplay on the other hand, it's very fast-paced and full of action, especially with Blade Mode, which slows down time and allows you to slice enemies into pieces. Raiden can also perform a "zandatsu" in which after slicing a precise area of the enemy's body, he can pull out their spines and consume it for health and energy. One of my complaints is that the parrying movement is sort of confusing at first and in my opinion they should've just made it a one button counter (just as in Arkham City). Also, there is also a "stealth" mechanic to appease long-time fans of the series, but since Raiden is a cuborg ninja with a sword, the stealth mechanic's pretty useless and is something we can do without in future games. Unfortunately, the game only lasted about 6-7 hours, and, being a gamer who loves to play long games, was pretty disappointed that I couldn't do more other than replay the missions and have some VR training. I played this game on PS3, the graphics were amazingly detailed, both in cutscenes and actual gameplay. I just wish they could've added more ambience to the dull environment, or at least made the areas more open-ended. Overall, Metal Gear Rising is a great game, the PROs being great graphics, interesting storyline, character, and fun gameplay, the CONs being confusing parry mechanic, short game (6-7 hours), little replayability value, and dull environment. The story is lacking which is a misstep considering how many things they could have done story wise. Then there's this one prominent pro that this game has, it's just plain fun. The issue I often find with this genre, high speed dexterity based action games, is that there always seems to be some way to break the system. In Bayonetta, that was the parry/block that cancelled damage and knocked back enemies, DMC3 it was Aerial Rave with weapon switching, 4, Nero's charge shot, NG Izuna Drop, there's always something. In this case, the parry/block system is too lenient and rewards spamming, dodging has way too many invincibility frames, combo variations don't really make all too much difference in the grand scheme, cancelling out of fully charged pincer blade attacks makes the already easy boss battles child's play. I really enjoy playing these games on a difficulty that rewards accurate response to known attack patterns and situations, with reflexes being the last resort fall back. However, MGR is just too broken, which is my real beef with it. There's also something that really nagged at me the whole time, Platinum did deliver, but I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed at points, thinking "they are capable of doing better than this" Sure it's fun, but success just didn't feel satisfying on my second and subsequent playthroughs. I'd recommend this game to people who like the genre, so if you're reading this review, please don't be discouraged from buying this game, the poor score I'm giving it here is because I couldn't overlook the flaws, not because the flaws undermined the positive aspects. However, I'd recommend DMC and NG3:RE before it, from a purely gameplay standpoint.

Worthy mention, the OST is absolutely top notch. Not only is it good, it's empowering in the moment. With it, reloading saves for no hit boss runs felt much less monotonous.

As far as the camera angle being sporadic, it only behaved that way when too close to a wall and would do a 180 degree turn to look at the character but at the wall as well. This was only a problem when i was hugging the walls in attempt to stealth at certain parts. But once I realized and understood what caused this was able to adapt my playing to prevent that camera behavior; and did it without sacrificing the experience of the game. Overall I loved the game and beat it three times in a row and still am trying to unlock certain collectibles and new weapons so continue to replay certain chapters. Now I have about 20 hours of gaming attributed to this game, and don't regret a moment of it. Plus the DLC's available are short but give great insight into the world and help expand the experience that most people complained was too short. The mechanics and the game play are so amazing to me it was effortless to forget or not noticed any shortcomings. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys hack'n slash, and are Metal Gear fans looking for something different in the beloved universe. Expand

Makes up for Raiden being a complete b*tch in MGS2, he's actually badass in this. Music is really cool too. The campaign is a bit too short and when the story tries to be serious, its a bit stupid considering how silly the story is, but overall a really good game, Platinum fkin rule!!!

Definitely one of the best hack'n'slash I have ever played! The story is engaging and interesting. The Blade Mode is Awesome! Hard difficulties are actually hard. The Graphics look great. My only gripes are: somewhat glitchy camera and a short Story.

IMHO, this is a must-have for all the Hack'n'Slash fans!

First of all this isn't a MGS game. This has nothing to do with rifles, pistols or stealth. This is a well made hack and slash game. The game is a bit repetitive when there isn't a boss fight. But those 5 bosses are extrelemely well-designed. And also cutting an enemy in a blade mode is hell of a fun. Hack and slash lovers DO NOT MISS THIS GAME!

After being bought back from the brink of death multiple times, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance finally releases. Despite not following the typical Metal Gear formula, Rising manages to find a new formula of it's own, and surprisingly enough, it manages to succeed, despite some hiccups along the way.

Revengeance takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, and Raiden, still a cyborg ninja, now works for a paramilitary division to support his family. Unfortunately, while on an operation to defend a VIP, Raiden is ambushed by a rival Paramilitary group who disagrees with the VIPs moves for peace. They manage to successfully assassinate the VIP while simultaneously humiliating Raiden in a crushing defeat. He is then rebuilt with a new and improved Cyborg body to carry out revenge against the paramilitary lieutenants that killed the VIP.

The first preface I must address is if you're expecting the gameplay shown in Kojima's original demos several years ago, you're gonna be disappointed. With the new developer, everything from the gameplay to the story has been tweaked or changed completely since that time. It's not the same game.

With that out of the way, the gameplay essentially turns out to a standard hack and slash with a few tweaks. You use the square and triangle button to use using light and heavy attacks, and if you have an alternate weapon, that weapon takes the place of the heavy attack. It sounds standard, but Rising has two new mechanics that make it stand out from your typical hack and slash title. The first of which is parrying.

What makes parrying stand out is how useful, unique, but frustrating it can be all at the same time. The blocking mechanic is activated by pressing the light attack button while also flicking the left stick in the direction of the attacker. Doing this puts Raiden into a blocking stance, allowing him to stop enemy attacks. It's takes some getting used to it, and you'll get stomped on by your enemies at the start because of it, but when you do master it, the mechanic becomes second hand for the most part.

I say for the most part because of this mechanic's frustration, which is the warning flash you get from enemies. When an enemy executes an attack, a red flash will appear letting you know to parry, and if the attack can't be parried, the flash will instead be orange. The main problem with the flash is the lack of consistency. Some attacks, despite being unblockable, will flash red, fooling you into blocking and taking an attack head on as a result. It also doesn't help that sometimes one flash will count for 5 consecutive attacks, so you'll block for one not knowing that you need to actually block for more. This inconsistency leads some of your hits being cheap or unfair, and frustrating as a result.

If you do block successfully though, you'll activate the Rising's second unique mechanic; blade mode. When the prompt appears, time will slow down, allowing you to control Raiden's sword directly and choose what and where to cut. Most enemies will have a weak spot that - if you cut correctly - will allow you to absorb the enemies core, restoring your health and energy completely. It's addicting and does help alleviate some of the frustrations with parrying, since any damage done to you is quickly rectified.

Ultimately, the main highlight of Rising are the amazing boss fights, which are these adrenaline-fueled battles where blade mode is used creatively to take your foe down. Each fight is incredibly fun, well thought out, and unique. Sure, all the before mentioned problems are present in some of the fights (the last one especially), but it doesn't take away from how truly epic each encounter is, and they all give you a new weapon after they're done.

The drive behind the story motivating Raiden to go forward though, is honestly a little convoluted. What starts as a simple revenge story of bad guys vs. good guys quickly changes to stopping the harvest of children's brains (I'm not kidding), to stopping a high ranking official from starting wars to create peace. The main gripe is that the story seems to be all over the place, but it's something Metal Gear fans should expect.

The game itself looks okay, but none of the graphics are very impressive .With drab environments and boring level design, nothing in this game will catch your eye and make you stop to look at it. Surprisingly though, the game manages to run at a consistent 60 frames per second which is impressive for how fast paced it is.

The biggest complaint is how short the game is. Even on hard, this game will take five hours max to finish. However, there is a lot of replay value, including upgrades and extra moves for your standard weapon as well as the weapons you unlock from boss fights. Plus, there are lots of unlockables, VR missions, and difficulties.

Ultimately, this game is fun, and most Metal Gear fans will like it. As for hack and slash fans who want something fresh, look no further than here.

I have played this game, way too much. Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is one of the most satisfying hack 'n' slash game I have played. Not quite as good as DMC4, but still amazing nevertheless. Controls are really good. My only complaint is when you're playing on higher difficulties you'll feel that some of the controls (mainly blocking) are poorly programmed that can lead to some really cheap hits if you're attempting you're Stormbringer playthrough. Combat is satisfying because you have a sword that can actually cut through stuff. This idea is made more noticeable through Blade Mode where you can slash any enemy into nothing, or rip out their spines, either or depends on your preferences. The soundtrack is the best thing to come out of 2013 in terms of music. Each song is fitting to each scenario. The boss themes match the fights exactly and each make the fight more memorable. Boss fights are still top notch, maybe even a little better then the MGS series because of the emphasis on sword play. My favorite boss is easily Monsoon, a magnetized cyborg that appears in chapter 3. As an introduction to Platinum Games, I am thoroughly impressed and will now be keeping a close eye out for Bayonetta, all thanks to the combat system. Now for the plot. It has its problems although minute in some cases. The plot follows Raiden as he goes to stop one private military corporation from training children's brains to become cyborg soldiers. This then leads into a conspiracy that leads up to the US Congress. The plot didn't come around until chapter 2. Despite this, it does look into the issue of child soldiers, which is still a pressing issue. People complain about how long the MGS cutscenes are, but I think they would agree that MGRR could use some long cutscenes as well as more. It could easily use an additional 2 hours in cutscenes, that way, it can really flesh out the characters. One example is the rival called Jetstream Sam. He disgraces Raiden in the prologue chapter, disappears, reappears in chapter 3 , disappears again, then you fight him in chapter 6. I feel that if they gave him another 30 minutes in cutscenes in other chapters, it would add to the fight with him and make it a more satisfying fight. It's also a short game, ranging to between 6 and 8 hours of gameplay. I felt as though they should have expanded the gameplay by up to four hours, making it so that you can enjoy testing the new skills you've earned against tougher scenarios. It would have fleshed out the combat a lot more too. The game also includes easily one of the hardest difficulty setting that I have played on, Revengeance mode. That mode, will teach why the game is called Revengeance and it will put your skills to the test. Overall, I'm giving this game 8.7/10. It's a good game, but die hard fans of Metal Gear may not like the heavy combat, so to them I recommend borrowing or renting the game before buying it. To hack 'n' slash fans, enjoy cutting through everything. Expand

I have to say, I have yet to enjoy a game as much as I've enjoyed Metal Gear Rising. After seeing it and wanting it for months, it was more than worth the wait.

    So where should I start?

Well for starters, the game is beautiful and polished very well. Looks fantastic, plain and simple, and runs smooth as silk.

The story is actually very deep once you play through it, grasp it, do a little searching within the game itself and are familiar with (or read about) the Metal Gear Solid games. But even if Metal Gear Rising is your first entry into the metal gear series, as it is mine, the story is plenty standalone to be enjoyed.

Raiden is one HELL of a bad-ass in MGR. The game is one insane ride of pure adrenaline pumping fun; you will most likely be resisting the urge to go "WOO!" many times from your first play-through. The combat is fun, flashy, incredibly skillful and fast paced, even on easy you'll feel it's not hard but enemies won't just roll over and die. The difficulty curve as you progress is very well done; you can't rely on the same button mashing combos for everything or you're going to find things getting tough. And of course there's the nod to the good old cardboard box of metal gear solid. Stealth is an option, but not at all necessary; it is never required to go undetected during any part of the game. But there are some areas that are emphasized to be stealthy. Usually that area will have a lot of tough enemies and be difficult for your first time through. Of course you could just have fun walking around as a cardboard box and laugh at the guys who don't think it's suspicious a box wasn't there 5 minutes ago.

The soundtrack? 11/10. MGR's soundtrack could not be any better. I've yet to see a game with such an amazing and well done soundtrack. Each song will be pumping more of the oozing epic of this game into your mind.

Enemies are pretty well done. They feel as they should; the regular grunts stand no chance, and the stronger enemies can be brought down fairly easily with proper skill or just hitting them enough if you want to go at it like a barbarian. Hey whichever way you enjoy the game right?

Each boss is a masterpiece. They each get their own personalized theme for battle music, as well as all having different 'feels' to the battles; each one will feel like a different kind of battle. The final boss I would say is probably one of the greatest, maybe top 5 ever, of all time in terms of game-play, design & personality, and music.

And of course even if you beat the main game, you're going to spend a lot of time replaying and searching the levels for the many hidden extras, items and such, or just trying to S-Rank everything.

In all good conscience I cannot fault this game for anything. The ONLY things I would like to see was the game itself longer, I beat it in about 4 hours on easy my first time, and the camera. The camera angle isn't really a big deal itself too, just don't get up against walls too often. And for tracking enemies it's not even an issue really. And while the game is short, the amount of time you'll spend hunting the hidden items, S-Ranking battles, and collecting all the collectibles will keep you playing for a lot longer, if the already insane game-play and wonderful boss-fights aren't enough already.

And if all that isn't enough, the price? A new copy is $40, $30 pre-owned at your local Gamestop. You will not regret buying this game if you're a fan of the metal gear series or bayonetta, or just love a good insanely fun hack&slash action game.

Lets start with the story, it's barely interesting at a general level, but when you get into specific character stories, it get's worse; you'll be begging for a skip button. The cutscenes are a strong point of the game and the quick time events make you feel engaged and powerful, but this is where the fun ends because the biggest flop of this game is the gameplay. The enemies are relentless and powerful which would be okay if the game had a much-needed dodge mechanic and boss fights feel loose; your sword swings go straight through them without phasing them while you're being thrown all over the place. For those begging the mention of Blade Mode, I barely consider it to be part of the gameplay. There is one difference between slashing an object into a million pieces and destroying it in one swing and that difference is visual appeal. Because of this, I consider the whole mechanic to be more like a cutscene, and therefore, a huge waste of time that's not worthy to be the selling point of the game. All of this adds up to one of the bigger disappointments of my gaming career, but I suppose that's what I get for falling for trailers of a seemingly deep and addicting experience. But isn't that how all gimmicks get you? Expand

Truly a great continuation of the Metal Gear storyline, handled carefully by Platinum games, and has the most (legitimate) stereotypical American protagonist character ever created. I love it.

This game is as hack-and-slash as it gets. Metal Gear Rising is a spin-off title taking place in the Metal Gear universe, alongside the Metal Gear Solid series, and putting its own unique spin on things. Starring Raiden, a character who Metal Gear fans sometimes wish didn't exist, the game gives the character his own time in the spotlight, instead of having to share it with the actual main character.

Branching off from the stealth-action combat of the Metal Gear Solid games, Rising gives you the art of the blade and tells you to go nuts. "Cut what you will". Whereas most games that give you a sword just feel like you're hitting enemies with a blunt stick, Rising makes you feel the edge of your blade as you slice through enemies and everything around you, and in the hands of Platinum, the makers of the hack-and-slash stylish hit Bayonetta, the game comes into its own. This is not Metal Gear Solid; it's a completely different beast and should not be compared to the previous series.

The combat system, though not incredibly deep, still feels fast, fluid and fun. Slicing through your enemies with the speed and stylish flair that only Platinum can deliver is a spectacle in and of itself, and it feels so much more satisfying when you kick an enemy into the air, slice him into pieces and then land in style as the bloody pieces fall around you. The Blade Mode is build around this, allowing you to enter a slow-mo state and take your time in aiming and angling your sword strikes to sever limbs, heads and torsos, and the game definitely makes full use of this feature, as some enemies require cutting at specific times and/or places in order to take them out. The second function of blade mode is to facilitate the Zandatsu technique, which lets you rip out energy cores from enemies in order to restore your own as well as grant full heals. In hectic fights, you are incentivised to be precise and accurate with your cuts, punching through an enemy's defenses and opening them up to cut them open and grab that energy in order to nab a quick full-heal to keep up the fight. It's a really fun and rewarding system in my opinion, Though most enemies could be taken out just by simple button-mashing, it's kind of a cheap way to play it, as you have moves that can end battles much more quickly and efficiently, opening up opportunities mid-combo for a blade mode cut in order to perform your Zandatsu technique. The parry system is also unique in that it's assigned to your attack button. How it works is you must push the control stick in the direction of an incoming attack and hit the attack button in order to block. Time it right, you can come out of it with an immediate counter that opens enemies up to blade mode. It's so simple I have no idea why people complain about it and give this game low scores just because they don't know how to do it properly. Ignore anyone saying this game is bad who mention the parry system.

The story, though not nearly as deep as, let's be honest, the alphabet soup that Kojima can sometimes shpeel out, isn't too terrible. Compelling alphabet soup, mind, but sometimes hard to keep track of. The narrative is simpler than that, while still containing certain things that tie it into the rest of the universe. After Guns of the Patriots, Raiden is signed onto a private military corporation called Maverick, whose duties mainly involve security for VIPs. After a mission gone awry and a horrible and humiliating defeat, Raiden sets off with a brand new cybernetic body and a thirst for revenge... revengeance, if you will. However, in typical Kojima fashion, the game never really takes itself too seriously, sprinkling in some humor here and there to spice up dialogue and make characters more appealing, despite the dark themes that go into child organ harvesting. Yeah. Hideo Kojima, everybody. The story isn't terrible, but it's nothing like what MGS has woven, though it shouldn't be asked of Rising to make something like that with one game.

The boss fights are as Platinum as they come. Huge one-on-one spectacle bouts between unique and varied enemies, requiring precise and aggressive skill to take down. The boss fights really do feel amazing, and are some of the most memorable bosses I've ever fought with how unique they are in their mechanics. Added with the amazing boss fight soundtrack that makes you feel pumped up as hell like you're playing through the greatest action sequence ever, these battles are pure adrenaline fueled fun that can sometimes be tough as nails to beat, but feel oh, so satisfying to fight.

Overall, the game is entertaining enough to keep you satisfied for the 6-7 hours it takes to complete, and will keep you entertained for longer than that on subsequent playthroughs, unlocking more content such as new swords and outfits, as well as finding all the health and energy upgrades. The game is a spectacularly fun ride, and well worth at least a try, even for seasoned Metal Gear fans.

I'd never imagine that after more than 10 years I had played the first DMC1 on PS2, I'd loved this kind of game. Damn, I admit it completed it as many times I have completed MGS2 and 3 (on every difficulty mode). And yet, I won't dominate the game! Still a noob. The story and characters don't have the charisma of other MGS games (and I'm missing some classic characters in here but well :< ), but it's still fun, at times frustrating, but fun. Wished it had more alternative ways to go through it. On the other hand, I'm so tired of sandboxes and open worlds, that sometimes I don't mind a corridor game. It lets you focus on the main purpose. Graphics are correct, the sword is very addicting, and the music is awesome too, you gotta love those songs. A bit gorey at times, but oh well :P this is not infiltration anymore! Expand

This is an amazing experience, its so diffrent from anything else that you ought to play it. However you should play it on the PC, the controller simply is too awkward to enjoy the experience. Even if you chose to play this game on console you will still enjoy the varied boss fights, kickass sound track and lovable characters

Platinum Games' Metal Gear Rising is similar to their other action game, Vanquish. It takes place four years after MGS IV. As the game begins, we learn that Raiden is working for Maverick Securities, a Private Military Company. While on bodyguard duty for the African Prime Minister, he is attacked by a rival PMC (called Desperado) that destabilizes nations through terrorism. They end up defeating Raiden and killing the prime minister. Weeks later, an upgraded Raiden and his support team learn that Desperado are attempting to stage a military coup in another nation. As a response, Raiden is sent in and ends up gaining an ally in the form of a cyborg dog which he renames Bladewolf.

The fast combat is in the tradition of Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden and the PS2's Shinobi. While gameplay mainly consists of running and fighting, there is the occasional stealth segment. As the game progresses, Raiden receives new weapons and abilities that can be upgraded in numerous ways. Some of the series' quirky staples such as exclamation marks appearing over enemy heads make a return. And just like in previous MGS titles, there is a heavy emphasis on cutscenes to propel the narrative. However, the violence during these animated scenes is more brutal than usual for a Metal Gear game.

The game's graphics are on par with Metal Gear Solid IV, but the framerate is much smoother. Unfortunately, camera issues do occur due to the fast action; it constantly has to be adjusted. Despite its flaws, this "Metal Gear Solid" spin-off is good fun. The game's fast, violent and over-the-top style should appeal to fans of both Platinum Games and Metal Gear Solid. Overall, it successfully blends kinetic action with the world of Solid Snake. I'd give it an 8.5 of 10.

but lets say that was over 12 years ago, am not so excited for this like when i was a teen age, same 13 years ago tekken vs street fighter was a dream to me and my dream has come true but that was teen age dream am not so dipressed to get it.
lets talk about metal gear rising, i would be very happy playing as gray fox and thats what kojima would, but konami told him that should be raiden.
the story wasent to bad and the gameplay is very great same as vanquish but with sowrd but the camera control is little sucks here.
and you use only sowrd and some granades and Stringer rockets, but its not very helpful in my opinion, funny that the game force you to make stealth kill but reiden isnt made for stealth here, its completly suck the stealth system here,
the best thing here is the boss fight and the thing that i hate in this game is the stealth, they ask you to make stealth here but there nothing walk slowly or any stealth that we learned in other metal gear solid, here we just attack and kill.
i had to get this game because am big fan of metal gear series and i have all of them, and the game is for all metal gear fans and ninja game fans with japanese style
