It's as satisfyingly competitive as you'd hope. London 2012 is the best athletics game we've seen in a while, even if the fact we can't guide the actual Team GB to glory puts a slight tarnish on its medal.

The officially licensed Olympic video game features motion control and more than 30 Olympic events, including new disciplines making their debut for London 2012 like 10m Synchronized Diving at the Aquatics Centre or Trampoline at the North Greenwich Arena. The official Olympic arenas have been authentically recreated and with an excellent control system. London 2012 contains a massive single player Olympic Games mode and a great online multiplayer mode featuring leader boards, which will track personal medals for that player's nation medal table.

A nice mix of events with different control schemes makes London 2012 a solid accompaniment to this year's Olympic Games.

The videogame adaptation of the London Olympic Games is quite a surprise. Leaving behind the "button mashing" gameplay of the past, SEGA's latest sports game delivers an exciting and enjoyable experience that's better suited for multiplayer sessions.

As mentioned, the game does suffer from some repetition and it would have been great if the game featured an RPG aspect that allowed you to level-up and further your sports men and women.

It's a chance to get caught up in the spirit and pageantry of the occasion while enjoying some friendly competition both on and offline. In which case, London 2012 holds up its end of the bargain pretty well.

An emphasis on its dull single-player campaign, rather than the more entertaining party play mode, fails to make the most of the competitive spirit of the Olympics. There's some fun to be had with friends, but even then the uneven quality of its minigames means that as soon as the Olympics are over, London 2012 will lose its allure.

The London 2012 videogame won't be on your playlist for very long, but if you're a fan of the genre, I'd rate this game as one of the better games of its kind. It'll also help you get swept up in the excitement and euphoria of the 2012 Olympic Games, which is what these types of games are all about.

Does a lot of things well, even if the pacing, depth, and overall immersion isn't where it needs to be. The basic control for each event is mostly intuitive and solid, there are a ton of events, using Move adds a lot to the gameplay, and skill supersedes luck (as well it should, of course). The technical elements are pretty good, too. We just require more in the way of "oomph," more reasons to keep the player coming back for more.

London 2012 is not a pretty game. In fact, it's rather horrid in most respects: athletes are modelled competently, but move with all the poise and grace of a stop-motion Terminator. Menus and other interface elements are all rendered in that garish, angular style that has sadly come to define the London games. [September 2012, p74]

London 2012 is a game that minimally fulfills the expectations. For fans of the competition, this is the only opportunity that provides good cover of the events that shape the competition and allows living the spirit of the Olympic without traveling to London.

Not a bad game, but London 2012 lacks most of the stuff that would've it the perfect game for sports fans.

London 2012 is frequently within touching distance of a podium place, but it sadly stumbles at the final hurdle. A lack of refinement in a number of the events mean that, while the title captures the atmosphere of the Olympic Games well, it crosses the finish line sandwiched somewhere in the middle of the pack.

The fact is though, that while London 2012 is arguably the best Olympic adaption yet, it is just not enjoyable enough for long enough to warrant too much excitement. Might be a great rental for the kids though.

Graphically the game looks very good, and the devs have created some nice loading screens inspired by the London 2012 logo. There are also commentators in the game and though voiced well enough they quickly become repetitive, sometimes looping through the same lines during an event.

Yes, it's about as close to the real thing as you can get without working up a sweat, but that doesn't justify the lack of depth and replay value this game suffers from. And why does every athlete look the same?
