Such a fun and ambitious game. Its not perfect by any. means and honestly the length really drags on for me. But the immersiveness really brings out the best in this title.

That being said, it's shortcomings eclipsed it's potential even way back then. An open world LA city, recreated almost block for block, goes to waste with nothing to do in it outside of cruising around. The worst offender has to be the interrogation system though. It consists of 3 option truth, like, and doubt. Apparently these were changed late in production which explains why your character with scream at suspects at the top of his lungs when you doubt them. The 3 option system makes successful interrogation impossible, some may say that's the point of the game, but it's so jarring when you think you telling the game to do one thing and it chooses to do another. Now that the bad is out of the way, I just want to talk about how this game is still a cinematic masterpiece regarding its ability to put you in the gumshoes of a 1947 film noire character. Some of the detective work you'll do as far as finding clues will make you feel like a genius. The plot even has some nice twists and turns outside of just handling cases that will really pull you into this world. It really is too bad we'll never see a sequel to a game like this. Expand

Pretty interesting game with good acting and plot. Gameplay was fairly good overall and story kept me engaged. Graphics are a bit poor, but the facial animations, voice acting, and story make up for it.

L.A. Noire introduces interesting technology. However, the game is boggled down by an empty open-world and simple gameplay mechanics.

Dennoch halte ich L.A.

However i´ve enjoyed driving thru streets of Los Angeles in beautiful vintage cars.
I know, that this game is intended to be slow progressing, but honestly, first half of this game is boring. I mean the story line. Fortunately there are some side "cases" which you can solve before arriving to the crime scene. I appreciate this.

In the end i must say, that i´ve enjoyed this slightly "different" game. It wasnt the best game i´ve ever played, but it was pretty decent. I´ll give it 8/10

The facial motion capturing was mind-blowing especially for that time, the gameplay was excellent with interesting cases and the characters / stories were immersive. Sadly there is something like a breaking point later on were it gets weaker (Common complaint by many including me) and like I said at the end of the game I think I wasted my time. The game follows the decorated World War 2 veteran Cole Phelps who starts a career as police officer in Los Angeles in 1947. There is an overall story-line including flashbacks and cases you have to solve. It is a homage to the Film Noir(e) genre and the developers put a lot of effort into its worldbuilding, crime cases of that time and feeling authentic. I praise them for this dedication and in this regard it is a true masterpiece. Gameplay: It is an open world game. You solve crime cases by investigating crime scenes, asking witnesses and interrogating suspects. Beware that depending on your performance you can end the cases earning respect (and unlocking rewards) or being scolded / made fun of by your superiors. During the interrogations the motionscan / motion capturing can truly shine. It was mind-blowing back then as no other game came even close to this performance. You can read the reactions from the suspect faces and make deductions (Still need hard evidence). I think I have to mention that the opinions differ if this worked good or bad. For me it worked but I think a warning is fair here. I say the gameplay is immersive and enjoyable while I must admit that I mostly ignored the open world aspects of the game (There are even collectibles that I did not knew existed back then). I praise the authentic approach again and that they got some familiar faces for the roles. Also some cases are familiar too like the Black Dahlia. Character wise I enjoyed the story as I learned more about Cole Phelps and his backstory. Also the supporting / other characters are well written. I never doubted them or their motives. Presentation wise I already said that they put giant efforts into making LA look and feel like 1947. The goal was to make it as realistic as possible with attention to details. There are some negatives too. Firstly the later cases are a bit weaker, the open world is neglectable for me and the most serious issue the downer ending. While I admit that it is somehow fitting I wont make make a full comparison to Mass Effect 3. However it is still so bad that I would not replay the game and it lowered my enjoyment of the game. I am still divided as on the other hand it is a great experience and too much great effort was put into the game. On a sidenote: There was a lot of crunch at the development which was back then no problem in public eyes and the developer was closed. Overall this is a dividing game to rate. It would be the stuff of legends if it had a better ending and some polish in the open world aspects. I think it is in the 8-9/10 realm without the downer ending. I give a 5/10 here because of the ending and would still recommend it partly. Just avoid the final or if you do not fear spoilers read it up to make your own judgement. Expand

For me L.A Noire is an underrated game. It has fantastic story and presentation. Makes you feel like a real detective. AFAIK they used motion capture tech for the face expressions and it look nice. Atmosphere is also nice. Cars, musics, clothes, hats; everything suit to the world well. Must play if you love the Noir theme. Hard to find an equivalent.

Although at first the gameplay can be catchy because everything is knew, soon it can become boring or repetitive. I think that the creators could have gone one step further with this game like involving the personal life of the main character with his family for instance or give you more choices during the interrogations. For exemple, it could have been nice to let you piss off the suspects to make them speak, or give you the choice to kill or beat the criminals. This game doesn't deserve more than an 8. If the game has more gameplay like the last 4 missions (there are 21) and less than the rest of the missions this game would have improved a lot. Unfortunately they didn't. Also in this last 4 missions where you are alone you can skip driving from place to place by pushing the triangle button. It took me 20 hours to beat counting 10/40 of the extra missions completed. I recommend to push the start button and look the map before going for the optional missions because normally are far far away. Personally I would think it twice before buying this game. Expand

I went into this game with high expectations (I know that is a dangerous thing to do) and unfortunatelly it didn't deliver. Sure the graphics are very nice and the facial animation technique is great, but how about the most important thing in a game: the gameplay?

While there is a nice openworld representation of 1940's L.A., there is really nothing to do in this liveless city. You don't have a house, there are no interesting side quests or mini-games, no crimes to solve. You can drive aimlessly around the city, that's about it. The driving is just fine btw and the cars look nice, it reminded me a lot of that other game called Mafia 2.

There is no multiplayer or co-op, so what about the story mode? Well it's pretty linear and it gets old very fast: wander around a crime scene untill your controller starts vibrating, giving you a hit that there is a clue to be looked at. You can't leave the crime scene untill you found every clue. Then you and your partner drive to a suspect or witness to ask them a few questions which are listed in your little notebook. You have to look at their facial expression to decide if they are telling the truth.

The system of 'true, doubt, lie' is not very efficient in my opinion: when you choose doubt your character will be yelling at the suspect but when you choose lie he will be more gentle in his approach, i don't get that! Also it doesn't really matter if you mess up during the interrogations because every time you make a mistake you have to repeat the whole thing untill you do what the game wants you to do. So you can just ask any question and make any decision, untill you found the one that the game wants you to pick.

There are a few instances where you have to catch a criminal on the streets. Just hold R2 to run after him and shoot or arrest him when you are in close range. You don't have to push any buttons to jump over fences or roofs, the game does that for you! And there are a few shootouts too, just hide behind a car or a wall, use the handy auto-aim system to shoot a few criminals, and that's it!

This game had so much potential but the action is simply too boring and there is no replay value in this game, no multiplayer and no interesting open world with side quests or random events. You can't talk to people on the streets, you can't use your weapon at will either.

It's just an interactive movie without any free choices, you just have to do what the game developers want you to do to come to the right conclusions and wrap up the case. Different conclusions do not affect the games outcome, there is only one outcome anyway so there is no real thinking needed. Just trial and error over and over again untill you find the solution and on to the next case, to do the same thing again.

Searching for clues and interrogating witnesses are enjoyable. The mini-games are where the game falls apart.
Every twenty minutes or so, you'll be asked to box, chase a suspect, shoot at somebody, or perform an array of less-common tasks - sneaking up on someone, balancing on a collapsing platform, etc. If these made up the totality of the game, it would probably be fine. But you only find yourself doing the same task every few hours - you never get a chance to learn them and improve. I forgot the shooting controls after the first sequence, and forgot the boxing controls later on. Some of the buttons are shown on-screen, but there's no manual in the options section, and I downloaded the game, so I don't have a paper manual.
Most mini-games aren't related to the main gameplay at all. Unlike car chases, which build on the driving you do in-game,
Oddly enough, the developers understand this. If you fail three times at any task, you can press a button and skip the entire mini-game. You can also skip driving (steering and braking in low speed traffic, with analog sticks, was a pain for me) by holding a button. The odd part is that repeating or skipping the action really kills the immersion. The game tries incredibly hard to be realistic (your partner will ask what's taking so long if you leave the controller for a minute) and unless you perform perfectly, this breaks the illusion they spent so much time building.

The game is probably from a more pragmatic and non-biased standpoint more like an 8 out of 10 (Great Game) for everything it does well, and at WORST a 6/10 (Slightly above Average) bogged down by a bit of repetition but held up by some excellent facial animations and acting (not just voice-acting, but real ACTING). But all in all it is still probably one of my favorite games personally, and is a required MUST-BUY for all gamers unless all you like is pulse-pounding action (which is not always a bad thing). A soulful, well made, kindness and melancholic game. Amazing noir spirit of Los Angeles and a good storytelling (despite some dispersive feeling because of being an open world game). Some may not like its pace, with some repetitiveness structure but i think that was one of the game objectives.

More adventure and mystery than GTA or Red Dead Redemption, mind you, but Rockstar just makes amazing games. The driving element was poorly finished - the cars were so wobbly, at times it felt like driving a giant jelly, but at least you can skip this if you want to.

Excellent detective story in retro LA. Captivating noir atmosphere, LA environments, precise detective work ala Columbo, topnotch story, overall feeling underlined by nice jazz music, just perfect. Some of the game mechanics might feel a bit clunky at times, but L.A. Noire is still one of the best, if not the best noir captured in a videogame. 9/10

At the crime scenes, you will be able to search for clues that may be of interest during the questioning process. It is absolutely vital to find and inspect clues, as it will be easier to correctly charge the enemy at the end of the mission. It's exciting to search for clues; the game makes you feel as if you're really a detective. Although the search for clues is fun, the primary source of gameplay is the interrogation process. It's a simple process, however, it does take skill to correctly choose an answer. You have 3 different options while interrogating: Truth, Doubt, and Lie. Correctly choosing one will allow you to branch the questioning and reveal questions that wouldn't have been there, had you chosen the incorrect option. It's very enjoyable to question characters, especially when the facial expressions are so realistic. One gripe I have with the gameplay is the shooting mechanics, which feels really stiff and awkward. It seems as if the mechanics weren't a main priority during the development process. I also have a problem with the "Street Crimes." They're enjoyable in the beginning, but soon become repetitive and constantly break the flow of the main investigation. I also feel that the open world was unnecessary. There's no real incentive to search for anything, especially when a new mission begins, as soon as the previous missions concludes.

    Story:
You will play as Cole Phelps, a police officer who was a former marine in WWII. Taking place during the 1940's, crime is at an all-time high--crooked cops, gangsters, and serial killers are a few of the foes you'll be facing. Team Bondi replicated 1940's Los Angeles down to a tee. It immerses you, which in turn makes the story feel genuine. I don't want to spoil anything, but I can assure you that the story is strong.

    Graphics/Appearance:
The graphics are very nice, and the facial expressions from the characters are unprecedented. The open world runs smoothly and the attention to detail is very accurate. As a Los Angeles native, I can attest to the accuracy of the famous landmarks. I am also impressed by the accuracy of the map layout. Street names, landmark locations, etc, are exactly where they should be. Team Bondi should be applauded for the amount of hard work and dedication they put into this game.

    Pros:
-Great Gameplay--Makes it feel as if you are really a detective
    -Unprecedented Realistic Facial Expressions
-Impressive Accuracy of Landmarks and Street Names
    -Good Storyline

    Cons:
    -"Stiff" Gun Mechanics
    -Unnecessary Open World
-Repetitive Street Crime Cases. They also interrupt the flow of the main investigations

    Verdict:
I highly recommend this game! Gamers always ask for something "different" and "new," and I can assure you that this is one of those games. Team Bondi should be applauded for the dedication and research that was put into this game. The gameplay is enjoyable and the story is strong. However, if you are looking for a game that has a lot of action sequences, then you should look elsewhere.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Damn, this was one hell of an experience. The story in this game is probably one of the most complex I´ve ever seen. It has a ton of stories, from the war tale of Cole Phelps, from the Traffic Cases, from the Black Dahlia, from the war against narcotics, from the corruption part of the police force, from Cole´s romance with a German singer, and, ultimately, the Suburban Redevelopment Fund story; all in one package. The interrogations are awesome, part of its success is because of the facial animation: combined with the superb acting from the witness, you really feel like detective trying to figure out if the POI is lying or not. Now, gameplay and driving still leaves a lot to be desired, but all of that is redeemed with the story and characters, and a great development for Cole Phelps as a person who can make mistakes, who wants to do good for once for his country after his ultimate blunder at war, a person who falls for a bait that can ruin his career for good. I love how they made Cole a representation of human nature. Now, some people may not like making mistakes during an interrogation, but I think it adds to the experience, because really, nobody´s perfect: a detective may not get all of his questions answered. Overall, this became one of, and probably my favorite, story game of all time for its complexity and the characters. It has its flaws in gameplay, but it earns my top score for making an amazing experience, and I absolutely love it. Expand

So that how I found out how linear this game is. However badly I up, I always get further in the story. I always get the bad guy and the story didn't change one bit. I also noticed that I every case is exactly the same: go to crime scène, find clues, interragate people, find clues and guess the outcome.
I never had anything right, yet the game keeps on going and I keep on moving up in rank. How does that make sense?
I do comment this game for the animations (motions capture) and graphics which are very good. And also because it's trying to do something new, which is not only a big challenge but a big risk as well seeing as how expensive this game must be.

While the controls can be a little awkward during car chases and indoor investigations, the faults are hardly noticeable. In all other instances, the controls work beautifully. The highlights of the game though are the interrogation sequences. These sequences make tremendous use of motion capture and allow the player to think like a detective. The best interrogation sequences are the ones where you must choose who the culprit is (ex. The Studio Secretary Murder). The graphics are stunning to say the least. Team Bondi did an amazing job recreating 1940s L.A. You can really get a sense of what this time period was like just by looking at the scenery. The game's soundtrack also transports you back to this time period. The game also let's you turn off the color and play it in black and white to really hammer home that noir feel. L.A. Noire's story is split up into cases amongst different desks; Traffic, Homicide, Vice, and Arson. Each case has it's own little story to tell. All of the cases add up to become each desk's story and each desk's story add up to become the game's story. The game's story is a love letter to film noirs like L.A. Confidential, Chinatown, and
The Naked City. The story fallows the rise and fall of Cole Phelps. The story of Cole Phelps may be predictable to film noir veterans, but it is interesting nonetheless. Overall L.A. Noire does not have just a interesting story, but fantastic smaller stories in between. L.A. Noire is without a doubt the best game Rockstar Games has ever been associated with, and that's really saying something. Even though there are small problems with the controls, they fade into obscurity when you look at all of the other fantastic aspects of this game.

I mean, lowering no music when you have all the clues of the different scenarios, not using the "different sound" when you're next to a clue, etc.

For all those who criticism the lack of decisions...there are some cases where you have to decide who's the guilty. You can decide where you have to go first in your clues searching (and that affects your chances of proving allegations)...I mean...of course is a linear game...but you can "make" that line.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first non-military game I remember playing since Deja Vu: A Nightmare Comes True that takes place in the 1940's, and I've found L.A. Noire to be everything I've come to expect from Rockstar Games, but without missions that involve a huge number of explosions, and cars that explode after taking too much damage. For better or worse, the game doesn't take on a true story line until reaching the arson desk, and if you look closely at Cole's notebook, there's boxes for Traffic, Homicide, Vice, and Arson, and when you get to the Vice Squad, it's pretty obvious just where Cole goes after completing the Vice Squad cases. (Burglary and Red Squads were mentioned in the game, and you'd think that the game could have added boxes for those detective squads to preserve some of the element of surprise.) The idea of switching main characters during the arson cases was also quite an interesting idea I never would have expected (so that the player can continue investigating, despite the LAPD keeping Cole away from anything resembling a house fire). The only real downer, is that current events of 1947 weren't covered as much as I had hoped. (The only time I really remember, was on the Homicide desk, when Cole and his partner share their thoughts about the ongoing Chinese revolution.) I'm unable to rate particulars of the game like finding golden film reels and entering every vehicle as requirements for 100% completion of the game (since I've never cared for Rockstar Games and their scavenger hunts, but I have friends who enjoy the exploration), but I was bummed to discover that the only reward for 100% completion of the game, is a trophy. (Is it really that hard to make a new outfit for Cole to wear) But despite some of these shortcomings, I still enjoy this game very much, and have replayed my favorite cases many times since I got the game in 2011, and I find all of the characters believable, but to this day, Cole's decision to cheat on his wife on the Vice Squad case still seems non-sequitur. (Unless Rockstar/Team Bondi were trying to make the point that the perfect 1940's woman is a Jazz singer with a curvaceous body.) Expand

Sadly though the end product is nothing like it could have been. This is basically a snooze fest disguised as a game. Honestly, if it didn't have Rockstar's name on the box it wouldn't be rated highly as it is or sold as well despite the fact Rockstar did not make this game.

My main dislikes with the game are.......

1- You never really detect anything. You walk around till you get a little chime meaning you press the x button and pickup the clue. If the clue needs to be examined further the game will tell you so. Once you have the clues your partner will signal you it's time to go somewhere else. The game basically walks you through detecting everything and finding clues. It tells you when you need to hit what buttons and where.

2- You can't mess up interrogations. This was lauded as a big feature for the game. If you blow the interrogation then you just do it again. Even if you guess wrong when your judging a person's true intentions you can still win the game without ever getting one right. You can go right through the game by guessing everything wrong when its decision time while interviewing someone. The game basically won't let you make mistakes that stop the game play and there are no consequences for anything during interrogations. There is no need to study a person's facial reactions or what they say because it doesn't matter. Guess right? No advantage. Guess wrong? No punishment.

3- The facial animations while good are just a gimmick. Another big selling point for the game is just a gimmick. Again looking at people's faces during interrogation to guess if they are lying or not doesn't matter since you don't have to be right. The facial animations are nice but it doesn't matter aesthetically because their bodies still move like stiff puppets. And they still aren't lifelike because they are over exaggerated to be noticeable. I personally wish they hadn't wasted all the money on filming actors in a fancy studio with all this high tech equipment and instead used the money to hire better writers for the game and work on making it more fun instead of just being a gateway for their facial animation tech. Honestly the animations felt more like a tech demo they were hoping to get other developers to license the tech for their games.

4- The game is incredibly linear. Yes a couple times you can chose to shake down a bartender instead of checking up on a drug addict but you never really get to chose anything. The game firmly holds your hand from the start to the finish and never let's go. I felt more like a errand boy out driving from point A to point B and then from C to D.

5- The storyline while not bad isn't that great. The main storyline starting out builds and builds and builds then suddenly it just stops and comes to a half with a very paper thin plot excuse and then suddenly you thrust off in another direction with no looking back. They just go to all this trouble of building up to something and then suddenly pull the rug out and leave you unsatisfied. The ending is very, very unsatisfying as well.

6- Team bondi has been saying the game isn't finished and that's easily noticeable just playing through it. They left the game kind of shallow in order to sell more DLC to gamers and that's obvious since they have been releasing DLC since its release and have recently announced more. It's just a shame they would release a 60 dollar game partially gutted so they can sell DLC and turn it into a 100 dollar game.

7- 60% of the game is still just grand theft auto. Just like in grand theft auto you have to drive a car for hours and hours and hours while you playing doing absolutely nothing but going up and down the same boring streets as a time sink. You can take any car you want like in GTA, you'll waste hours of time driving just like GTA, when you run it's just like in GTA, when you shoot or fight it's just like GTA, in fact everything that isn't investigating or interrogating is just like GTA.

In the end this game is wasted potential. I really wish I had waited till it eventually drops to 5 bucks or less because that's all it's worth. I had a lot of fun for about 6 hours and after that I find myself playing it just to finish it since I paid for it. I was really disappointed in this game.

The graphics and character modelling/animations are some of the best I've seen. Post WW2/1940's Los Angeles is beautifully detailed, alive, and accurate to the time period, as you feel like you're actually in 1940's L.A. on a movie set. The voice acting is well done to, props to the casting team. This game certainly is an open world/sandbox game where you have the freedom to roam around, do side missions, and do the main missions at your own pace.
Speaking of the main missions, they're varied, but get repetitive at the same time. There's missions where your'e doing high speed car chases, foot chases, interrogations, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, gun fights, etc. If you're expecting some mindless shooter or GTA, this isn't your game, but if you want a game that offers something different and succeeds on what it has set out to do, this is a great game!

The map is huge and every street has its own stunning landmarks, and you can tour them in a host of different kinds of period automobiles. And just when the plot begins to grow slightly tiresome, suddenly a twist is introduced and you're playing as a different character. That said, LA Noire is a bit smarter than your average game, so it will appeal to a different audience than Grand Theft Auto, the latter of which involves much fewer riddles and no conversational skill whatsoever to beat. Despite very high expectations, LA Noire managed to actually deliver on all it promised in an age of otherwise lofty claims. The only reason why it doesn't deserve a 10 involves some of the conversational branches, which feel counter-intuitive at times and occasionally use tricks that were never explained or ever really introduced. But if you think the story is going to feel stale or antiquated as a result of the source material from which it is derived, amazingly this is not the case and LA Noire breaks a lot of new ground. The interrogations are pretty limited and sometimes the question choices they give you don't make sense...or you'll pick a question that should work, only for the game to tell you it was the wrong choice - This isn't gameplay, it's just picking predetermined dialogue. Meh. The "action" sections are pretty boring and scripted-feeling. The driving isn't nearly as fun as GTA because they don't have the realistic car damage or fun driving physics from GTA. It was pretty pointless for them to spend all of that energy creating an open world but not have anything fun to do in it. The only point of driving is to get to a new crime scene - which becomes pointless, and after a while I eventually just let my partner drive there automatically rather than waste my time with the tedious driving. GTA made you want to drive, because you could have fun getting caught in a crazy police chase, or you could just have fun causing destruction and launching your car off of insane jumps...and GTA's awesome car physics made controlling cars so much more fun. But the world of L.A. Noire doesn't make driving fun - so what was the point of including driving? What was the point of having an open world environment? I do give them props for the impressive facial capture though - that went a long way in making the game more watchable at least. Expand
