From the moment you start this game up it makes you feel like it's a real war going on. The game looks beautiful, but it has an awful lot of brown and orange. The controls are loyal to Killzone but it does take some getting used to especially the melee. The story is very well written and shows that the Helgast aren't just alien they're also human. The voice acting is very well done and the sound effects will shatter glass with surround sound on. Shooting gets a little annoying since the crossair dissapears the longer you shoot and your bullets become more inaccuarte but you'll get used to it and that's not a problem in multiplayer. Oh yeah, the multiplayer. When I had my choice of Call of Duty or Killzone 2, I chose Killzone 2. It is just THAT much fun and easy to get into. It has a lot of traditional FPS MP modes only renamed and retweeked. An overall incredible package that no shooter/ps3 fan should dare miss out. Expand

Killzone 2 is still one of the best FPS ever made. It makes most of the other shooting games on the PS3, PS4, and Xbox look like wii games in comparison. Graphically, the game is a masterpiece - so much so that you can just stand there taking in your surroundings, unable to believe that developers could make such a visual feast. And of course the game itself is pure FPS with great gunplay, awesome enemy AI and killer envrionments to unleash your carnage. The characters are great too and the single player campaign is a nice, lengthy affair. The multiplayer is still active as of late 2015 and is also a lot of fun to play. Plus, it's a well known fact that KZ2 on hard is the most challenging game to beat on the PS3, so if you accomplish that you'll get some pretty good street cred as well. If you haven't played this yet you're really missing out, especially now that you can get a copy pretty cheap. 10/10. Expand

The gameplay itself was exponentially better, so much more fluid and challenging. The graphics were gorgeous and have aged so well, made it hard to believe that this game is 8+ years old. The characters were expanded on from the first game as they had really no depth at all in the first game, and you play as a character separate from the four main characters which allows you to care about the main protagonist (inherently) and also the supporting characters since you've played as them before. Like a beautiful combination of Battlefield's gameplay and Halo's futurism with a score straight out of Hans Zimmer's career, Killzone 2 shines bright and stands out as one of gaming's best shooters. One of the best Killzone game's there is. This is not one to miss out on. The graphics, the story (albeit short) and the multiplayer (now botzone and private servers) is excellent.

This game was such a fun time back in the day.

I recommend it, the impact this had on the games industry was massive and I still think it holds up today.

    Thank you Geurilla!

but one important thing, me as a realistic the maps are all like the same and ugly its the helghans planet all places looks same not so diffrent then other maps.
and the trailer of E3 2005 its not like the game that was a fake, but for me the game is alot better then the es 2005 trailer, the AI is perfect, their is alot o soldiers type, and i will never forget when i faced the rocket launcher with the knife he was reloading, man he was afraid when he saw me getting close, this game is awsome, i enjoyed the online more then any others game, sad that we have to move on with other games whil time is passed.
killzone 3 was kickass but 2 is better for me.

It is difficult, painful and the game hits the balls, but after passing through you experience a great sense of pleasure. It’s very interesting to go through. Among the shortcomings, the questionable use of the capabilities of the gamepad, excessively dark graphics, the plot of the game will not present interesting stories in the notes, and the fps is sometimes small (but considering the graphics, this is normal).
Would bet the game 9 out of 10.

Create a clan, recruit members, and battle other clans in scheduled tournaments for "Valor" points. Badges allow you to mix and match various abilites which are unlocked as you rank up. Feel like practicing a bit before going head to head with other gamers online? Bots are available for just that. Highly detailed environments with amazing lighting and excellent sound make the levels come alive. Cons : Corny dialogue. Some of the dialogue in the game just seems plain silly at times and will make you pretend you didn't hear that. Controls feel somewhat sluggish and will take some getting used to, but by no means do they break the game. Lack of Co-op. A lack of a cooperative mode was a slight disappointment, an already amazing single player campaign would've been a blast to play through with a friend or two online. Final verdict : Definitely a game any fan of the fps genre should get Sony's Playstation 3 for. Lack of Co-op aside, Killzone 2 has everything a first person shooter enthusiast would look for in a solid first person shooter. Expand

If you own a 120hz set, grab a bucket. Now, the game has 1 big flaw. The controls are clunky and if you're used to play COD4, you will feel like you're playing underwater playing this game. You kind of get used to it during campaign. I tried the multiplayer and it was OK. But the control issue makes you slow at reacting and you just can't move or dispatch enemies as fast as Modern Warfare has accustomed us to. Because of these issues and with the graphics alone as an upside, I just don't see myself popping this game inside my PS3 for a multiplayer session instead of playing COD4, let alone paying 50-60 bucks to keep it after beating my rental copy. If you're a PS3 owner you owe it to yourself to play this game and see what your black shiny beast is capable of doing when the programmers know what they're doing and are competent enough to harness a big chuck of the untapped PS3 power. Now, graphics wise, this game has spoiled me by setting the bar so high that I won't settle for anything inferior from now on. Because youve played cod4 online for 13 weeks is not an excuse to hate on a game thats controls arent the same. Now these controls can be changed in KZ2, they are not the issue. The only thing that may be at issue here, is the sensitivity, which you just have to get used to because its based off of realistic weight properties. Please carry a gun and tell me how fast you can turn, KZ2 will closer to it than cod4, so those complaining about that need to stop. I rate it a 9 because of some of the AI issues. They dont kill the game, but are irritating, at least to me. The AI can be cheap at times, killing you as you turn a corner (ex, i opened a door which i was suppose to, was killed instantly by a Helgast with a shotgun... lame). Your teammates often stand around, but mostly if its just you and one other guy, when its several they do fine. But mostly they dont seem to help too much. And they story could have been a little more in depth, but its at least solid. Cover system works well, multiplayer is too. up to 32 players with no lag is amazing. This is a very well done game, has some minor issues (as does every game mind you), but shouldn't deter anyone from getting it. Expand

Sound: 9.4 The background music and yelling of your teammates makes the game all the more intense. Again, its the cheesy dialogue that's holding this category back. Gameplay: 9.8 The campaign mode is so intense and fun. The AI is outstanding, extremely intelligent. The graphics are jaw-dropping. The weapons are fun to shoot and well designed. My only complaint is that the controls are a bit too slow and unresponsive. Especially with the vehicles. Lasting Appeal: 9.6 While the campaign does offer a bit of fun to play through, its the multiplayer that will keep you hooked. Extremely fun and hectic, it's one of the best Multiplayer's out there. Overall: 9.6/10 This game is really brilliant and fun. It's one of the reasons to buy a PS3, alongside MGS4 and LBP. It's the third best game on the PS3, behind LittleBigPlanet and MGS4. Story is good not great but the graphics are stunning. I couldn't believe the shadows. The first time I saw my shadow moving along with me I unloaded on it before realizing. Also multiplayer graphics are still outstanding. Unlike COD where you see a slight decline in graphics to multiplayer. The longer I play it the more I like it.

Not much innovation here but I don't really care to be honest, I'm not a sad reviewer that only gives games high marks if they are innovate. No, I give games high marks if they are fun to play. Killing someone in multiplayer on this game is far more rewarding than call of duty could ever be, and being a proud xbox360 fanboy I am not being completely biased, I'm being completely honest: Its far better than Halo3 and GoW2. Add to this a good set of well designed maps, several fun modes, ability of users to create your own custom online games, password protected games. You can play against AI bots and with AI bots and you can invite your friends to AI bot game as well.

The single player story is fun. The end game fight is not fun and feels like a cheap way to make battle tough. If you read online on the final fight you will find that many people say the same about final fight.

I have played major online shooter games:
All of Call of Duty games starting with 4 (fun, but got worse with every release after CoD 4)
Medal of Honor (crap) Resistance fall of Man (original). It is good, but it is not fun by now.

Killzone 2 is by far my favorite online shooter game out of the listed above.

The single player is well paced and action packed enough to enjoy despite the lack of a strong storyline. The multiplayer is incredibly addictive. It's a skill based FPS and one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Could have used a toggle crouch option for the otherwise perfect first person cover system, but other than that, I didn't have any problems with the controls. Some say that the game-play can be repetitive, but I strongly disagree. The game-play is dynamic in that your character is rendered in real time and the game will periodically switch to a third person perspective. Your character even emits his own shadow from multiple light sources which are also among the best lighting effects in the history of gaming. There are many different enemy types and each one can provide a tough challenge even on recruit difficulty. The impressive A.I. bounds from cover to cover and flanks you if given the opportunity. Any dissapointments killzone 1 had were fixed in this game. Possibly the best shooter sequel ever in terms of improvements in quality. In terms of graphics -well- what can I see about killzone 2's visuals that hasn't already been said. The visuals are simply phenomenal and the frame rests at a smooth 30fps while screen tearing is non-existent. The artful use of excellent cell-shading and textures are beautiful. Sadly, the game features no co-op but the campaign and multiplayer provide a great experience. The campaign stays true to the killzone storyline and does a good job of keeping the player interested. The Helghast have a more dramatic presence and the ending provides a nice cliff-hanger for a sequel. The story could have used more depth as we no relatively little about the Helghast and ISA motives for war but otherwise the plot is easy to follow and the voice acting is good. The multiplayer is similar to games like team fortress or battlefield as it focuses on classes. Good teamwork and diverse use of classes are the key to winning online. Dedicated servers improve the reliability of the game, and the maps are fun to play. All in all, Killzone 2 progresses the killzone series forward and is a worthy sequel. Expand

So this leaves me thinking, why exactly do we desperately need a new generation of gaming platforms? What exactly will they improve so much to be considered "next generation"? The leap isn't that big looking at the new titles that will come out. Do we really crave those extra textures so much? Because that's basically what it adds, and less loading times perhaps. The lighting is already perfected in Killzone 2. Sure connectivity and online play seems to be the new thing that grants it the title of "next generation" but this could be done on current aswell.. Story: you play as sev an isa soldier who is part of a small what seems to be spec ops division of the isa. the story is probably the weakest part of this game , and characters are kinda boring . rico returns from killzone 1 but he was much more over the top in killzone one , here he is still a rough tough angry and violent man but he cares about his friends and squad mates . Sev being the player character is mostly silent and when he dose show emotion it dose feel awkward and unwarranted , like when one of the characters dose die ( wont tell you who) he gets angry and him and Rico start fighting and that felt out of place to me. besides little awkward moments the story flowed really well and had excellent pacing
    Story: 8/10

World building: killzone's best aspect to it is 100% its world building and killzone 2 builds on the first killzones lore in big ways . and this really just feels like one event in a bigger story, to the way every thing looks to the helgan planet to even the helgans ideologies vs the ideology of the isa every little bit of lore is in service to either the game play or the story. i like the world war 2 feel to the lore but with a sci fi spin on things makes for a truly great world
    World building: 10/10

Graphics: killzone 2 looks great , animations are very dynamic alot of thought was put into the reload animations , mostly because they are well made fictional guns . lighting is well done and the colour pallet is dark and neonish witch over all helps set the gritty cinematic tone for the game. for the ps3 this game looks great and even holds up today in 2019
    graphics 9/10

Gameplay: first person shooters are a dime a dozen these days but killzone 2 manages to set it self apart in terms of game play in little ways. like how most guns are actually inaccurate and shooting for center mass is a legitimate strategy in this game where in other games id be aiming for head shots. the cover system in this game is innovative taking cues from 3rd person cover shooters but done in a first person view it makes it so much more immersive. the games difficulty is just right and a solid game direction makes for a great cinematic game a huge step up from killzone 1
    gameplay: 8/10

sound design: for killzone 1 sound design was poor even having no battle music, BUT killzone 2 said none of that this time , all the music is cinematic and has an industrial feel to it witch goes along with the lore and story , and voice acting has greatly improved as well , lines are well spoken and not super cheesy ( maybe a little cheesy but not super ) all the guns sound cool and makes them a joy to shoot .
    sound design:8/10

    8+10+9+8+8=43

Guns and melee attacks pack a punch. The cinematics are well done and we'll shot. The levels are well designed and the art direction is somewhat unique. The multiplayer is game changing. The way a single match can have three or so different game modes at once is unique and exciting, resulting in matches that can last up to 30 or so minutes. Overall, Killzone 2 is great! The single player campaign has a good story with a few memorable and entertaining characters, good cinematography, good pacing and fun levels. The multiplayer is like nothing else out there, even to this day. Expand

Sure, the PlayStation 3 had many great fps games. But then there was Killzone 2! This game is more action packed than a Bruce Willis blockbuster movie. Combined with a cool story, superb controls and graphics, that can still keep up today. Just WOW!

Story is slightly above average. But Lore is Very Nice and Multiplayer is wonderful. However, the biggest problem in the game is that there is very little variety of vehicles, the vehicles we use are only Tank, AA gun, Anti-Aircraft and EXO . Although 4 vehicles seem like enough for you, we use these vehicles for a very short time, which reduces the variety in the game. But that's the only problem with the game, everything else is very Great .Lastly, the game makes good use of the Controller's features, Vibration puts you in a more combat atmosphere, and Motion sensors are well used on C4s or valves. In my opinion, the second-best FPS game for the PS3 after the OG Modern Warfare 2. The surprise from the trailer that was notoriously feckin fake to releasing and getting some fantastic reviews was SUCH a surprise to me and I love it for a reason.

This game kinda lived up to the hype, great graphics, intense almost all of the time, but it does not bring anything new to the fps genre go there shoot that and move on but thats not a bad thing, the controls do take awhile to get use to but use the 2 one not the default . mp is fun but the spawing points need work. its worth a buy if you have a ps3

The main problem I have with this game is the sluggish controls, aiming is a bit of an effort unlike in Call of duty 4&5 where it seems much more responsive. Excellent campaign (single player mode). But CONTROL, CONTROL, CONTROL is an issue. If you're used to the smooth and tight feel of Call of Duty 4 and 5 (WaW), then the KZ2 controls would definitely feel a bit sluggish. This becomes an issue during multiplayer games. Thankfully, everyone's suffering from the same sluggishness. Also, character rendering and movement during Excellent campaign (single player mode). But CONTROL, CONTROL, CONTROL is an issue. One of the first things I noticed about killzone is that there is no aim assist, which obviously makes it harder to aim, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, just different from most shooters. The story isn't worth mentioning, (basically kill the guys with the red eyes, and capture their leader). And multi-player is great with its classes in in game switches of game type. Note to Jon L and others: just because you suck doesn't mean the controls are bad. The controls are fine once you master them. I'd like just a BIT more turning speed though. As for the multiplayer maps, all 8 are well designed and accomodate different tactics, and all 8 have plenty of different routes you can take (usually 3 distinct routes from your spawn base). Aiming - again, Note to Jon L and others: just because you suck doesn't mean the controls are bad. The controls are fine once you master them. I'd like just a BIT more turning speed though. As for the multiplayer maps, all 8 are well designed and accomodate different tactics, and all 8 have plenty of different routes you can take (usually 3 distinct routes from your spawn base). Aiming - again, don't criticize the mechanics because you can't do it - just take your pwning like a man. The multiplayer DOES let you unlock things and skews it toward players who have unlocked their preferred badges. but you have the M80 assault rifle from the get-go, and that's the overall best gun anyway - and it makes you want to keep going to unlock more things. Jon L, you think the MP5 and the AK-47 were the best guns in COD4? That's hilarious - I'd own you repeatedly with 3 round bursts from my M-16. Strategic camping or coming in guns blazing - whichever style you prefer can be effective, just like in COD4. and every other FPS. I'll give COD4 a slight edge in multiplayer and KZ2 a slight edge in single player. That's high praise. The graphics - you'll be noticing stuff 3 months later and saying "that's cool". I'm hooked on multi at the moment, but I can't wait to take on single player on Elite difficulty - single player is short but it nevers starts to drag (COD4 did, toward the end). Overall this is a great game, a refinement on the FPS genre in general, and has the depth and substance to last for a long time. Expand

Killzone 2 is one of my favorite FPS games for two reasons. One of the most important reasons is that this game has very decent to exellent AI and they do not spawn at exactly the same place each time. Although not perfect the AI are capable of making intelligent decisions as a group and this allows one to also take different approaches and routes to take the enemy out. Especially on the highest setting this is very important to keep the game fresh and challenging. The second reason I love this game is the visuals - the smoke obsuring your view ect is unlike any other game and adds to the adrenaline rush of playing through it. Ironically this is also one small fault of this title. Despite awesome graphics there are lots of times the game very briefly pauses to catch up and although the catch up is minimal it does interfere with the immersion of the gameplay. Two other small faults hamper this game: your AI buddies do seem to get in your way quite often and some chapters start you off with really low powered weapons inappropriate for the situation. I find this quite annoying rather than immersive to the storyline. Apart from these small issues Killzone 2 is top in class. Apart from the FEAR series you will not be treated to such good AI that you actually feel you are taking on a real fantasy group of enemies with more than half a brain each which is typical of almost all other shooters. Killzone 2 can only be described as ''solid'' as it does almost everything right. The problem is that the only thing that's beyond solid is the online and graphics. As a FPS Killzone 2 is one of the best on the ps3, and I usually don't like FPS controlls on consoles, and Killzone 2 does it well enough. I liked the shooting elements and the arsenal of weapons. Shooting off helghast hemets with a pistol is allways awsome. The flamethrower, shotgun and sniper rifle also break up the usual action. The graphics in the game are incredible in a way that few other FPS's could do but it still lacks something. The characters movement is stiff at times and the transitions between cutscenes and gameplay are way too obvious. The dialog is absolutely terrible, the worst part of the game. The story is like world war 2 in the future where the helghast are some kind of space natzis. The online is where the game shines the most, as the core gameplay is at it's best online. The maps aren't huge but they are smartly built. Every part of the map is usefull for tactics and you'l find yourself enjoying these maps a long time. As the third game came out, being almost identical to it's predecessor, it's allways nice to remember this game. Killzone 2 is truly great, it's not incredible nor anything unique, but it does it's job well enough and in the end of the day, I'm not complaining. Expand

Killzone 2's campaign definitely could have used a stronger narrative, and the controls aren't as smooth as other shooters, but the campaign is a blast, the game is gorgeous, the multiplayer is engaging, and the overall presentation is phenomenal. Great looking game. Better than the look is the sound. Honestly no fps comes near it in terms of sound. The characters are kind of forgetfull (Natko and Rico are douche bags). The story isn't that great either. All of this is a minor issue when you dig in the action which is kind of unforgiving in higher difficulty.

It's true that Killzone 2 is filled with moments that can handily be described as inspiring awe. Each scene is incredibly well detailed, from the gaps in jerry-rigged cover points letting you sneak in a killing headshot to scarred and scratched textures, the planet feels entirely believable... Without a doubt Killzone fans, action and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for best game of 2009. [Feb 2009, p.38]
  2. Killzone 2’s secret ingredient is the fluidity in gameplay that we have come to enjoy more than its graphical prowess or jaw-dropping visuals. And that’s what games have always been about... We're surprised to see Killzone 2 blows our expectations out of the water with a memorable SP campaign and a stellar MP component. To put it short, this game makes "Gears of War 2" look like a high school attempt at gaming and that is a HUGE compliment!
