Oynadığım ilk quantic dream oyunu. Gerçi buna oyun diyebilir miyiz bilmiyorum oyundan ziyade bir hikayeyi kararlarımızla yönlendirmek üzerine kurulu. Oynanış anlamında bir çekiciliği olmasa bile verdiğin kararların etkisini görmek güzel.

In a gaming environment where CoD X is the top of the list of twitchy action entertainment and Bioshock is the extent what most gamers consider "intelligent" games, Heavy Rain doesn't stand a chance. Which is a shame, because the game narrated and plays like reading a great book; and the attention span of the Youtube generation most likely doesn't even allow for that slow a hobby.

Let me begin by saying that this game is a welcome addition to the video game industry. In an industry getting drowned by endless shooters and whackers, H.R. In an industry getting drowned by endless shooters and whackers, H.R. (Heavy Rain) is such a soothing relief. The gameplay alone is very different as a mere button press will result in different angles and plot in the game. And such actions are reflections of your decision making. Either you let the game control you or you control the game yourself. I let myself dictate the story with my decisions and actions and I failed miserably. After the game, I was so sucked into the outcome that it made me think what could be the possible bad decisions I made that reflected the outcome of my first playthrough. Like I said, I failed the first time. I have never felt so sorry for my actions in a video game (or shall I say, a mini-movie) until this one. Not even Bioshock 1 and 2 can come close to it. Sadly, it could be a showing of my real-life subconscious that dictated me throughout the whole game. And it failed me. Honestly, it made me think about my own life as well. Could I be already doing something that may fail me in the future? I hope I am not. But then, I am just human. In terms of mechanics, it takes a while getting used to it and it may not be easy as you think it is (well, I played the hardest level though) as you should think on your feet when playing this game. There are no turning back when making decisions. You press a button in a big scene, it's locked in. Like in real life. When something's done, it is done. And judging by the number of trophies I got (I got only about 20 my first playthrough), I know there is more to this game. And the very ending was so disturbing. Made me jump out of my seat (I didn't know it has a horror part lol). I'll definitely replay this game over and over again. Graphics-wise, H.R. will not take the crown this year. Yes, it looks good over-all but screen tearing and framerate lags are just unbearable. Yes, my TV can only output to 1080i but I also tried running the game at strictly 720p and it didn't do anything at all. Hope Sony/Quantic will do something about it. There were also some nagging issues at the beginning of the game wherein the screen just goes black and the sound of the rainfall becomes so loud and glitchy. This happened specifically where the FBI agent (don't want to name names...spoils it...) met with the local cop and also the scene where Dr. Mmmm met with patient Mmmm in a psyche session. I had to re-start the game but luckily it didn't brick my PS3 (whew!). Sound is great and pairs well with my surround sound (again, with the exception of the above mentioned glitch/bug). Worth the money, worth the hype and definitely worth trying for MATURE people out there. I say mature as this game isn't for kids at all. Again, I don't wanna spoil it but just take my word for it. Expand

This is just done a little differently to most games. It's about decisions, while some will have little impact on the story or character others will have a larger impact - in fact i managed to kill one of the characters on my first play though though a decision i made. Graphics very nice, as are most of the animations. The game's biggest let down is some pretty average voice acting - this really should have been alot better for a game that is all about story and believable characters. In short I recommend renting this game first, as it will not be for everyone, but for those of us that enjoy this type of game/entertainment then it is a hugely enjoyable and unique experience! This game really surprised me. I'd had high high hopes for a story central game where the quicktime events fleshed out scripted scenes with some level of choice, but the way it all comes together is astounding. The game is not without flaws of course. The beginning can be a bit slow, it has a pretty glaring plot hole that's never explained, the controls for walking around are pretty archaic, and some of the voice acting can be sub-par (what with how some are obviously Europeans trying to sound American). However the game makes you actually care about the 4 main characters, and it does this so well that the action scenes are made that much more intense because if you screw up (which admittedly can be hard to do) that character will die and you have to go through the rest of the game knowing its your fault. I could actually feel my heart pumping during the action scenes and was genuinely distraught when I thought I had screwed up. When you care that much about a character's well being then you know the game has nailed it's goal of drawing you in to the story. The plot is stellar for a game and it almost feels like you're watching a thriller movie, but the choices and consequences push it further and make this a truly personal experience. Anyone looking for a game that puts an emphasis on skill and/or mindless fun won't find what they are looking for in Heavy Rain, but if you want an experience that will keep you enthralled till you see the dramatic conclusion then you CAN'T miss this game. Some people don't even call this a game (and it's true the gameplay itself is kept to a minimum), but if it's not then whatever Heavy Rain is it's something special and I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more of it. Clunky movement, but is everything most of the reviewers told you it was. Those dissappointed are those expecting something the game wasn't.. I was expecting another Indigo Prophecy, or for those of you who played sega saturn, a filmed live action game with a similar control scheme. All in all i've enjoyed the game and will most likely play it multiple times.

A great game. First the bad: there were a few glitches and the sound bytes were a bit sparse in some sections (i.e. only a couple recorded bits of "Shawn!" when a panicked father will sound differently at least 7 or 8 times). Now the good: great graphics, compelling story with a messed up killer and outrageous tests for the father, and ways to get more than one ending!

A couple of bits that I found with faults. Where was Madison's background? Why the troubled nightmares and insomnia? Also, the game was a bit linear in its directing the player to achieve each goal, like it's easy for the FBI agent to find the killer through simple trial and error in the ARI system.

If they make another game like this, I would suggest a bit more conclusion-making on the player's part if it's a mystery-like story. A good puzzle or two would also put some extra gems on the product.

Overall: Definitely worth the rental as you can get through the game once within a couple days. Also, the game has a story and plays out like a movie enough that your spouse/friend/roommate would enjoy playing with you.

You play as four characters and your decisions during the story effect how the story plays out and how it ends. You do not get to pick every piece of dialogue that comes out of the characters mouth, which bugged me because these are your choices and it is not always up to you. The controls are unusual at first but once you get use to them they will come naturally. Heavy Rain tries to do a lot of things in one game, and also tries to be something new in the industry at the same time. It might not check everything off its "to do list" but accomplishes most of its ambitions. Expand

This is a good game, but it somehow lacks a little in each category. The controls are interesting, but confusing at times. The characters are well acted, but at the same time aren't. The plot is okay, but very confusing. Anybody who says this is a bad game is crazy, but it isn't the best game ever made.

However the story is very good until it comes close to the end, then things just go silly. The character models and facial animations are superb and very well done. I actually enjoyed the gameplay style Heavy Rain has, the quicktime event fights are intense, especially the life or death ones when you're so attached to the characters. I would have given Heavy Rain a 6 or 7 if it wasn't for how much I loved it whilst I was playing it, It has great ideas and is certainly innovative, but it's also utterly flawed. I hope David Cage gets his together for Beyond Two Souls and fixes the problems that Heavy Rain has, if he does, or whenever he does, it'll make for a damn fine game. Expand

Heavy Rain boasts one of the most relateable themes in a video game. It isn't about trying to rescue a princess from a monster, nor is it about trying to prevent World War 3. Instead, it's about a father trying to save his son. The theme of parenthood is shown throughout, particularly in the "trials" Ethan finds himself facing. More on that later.

It is worth considering that this isn't really a "game", but rather an interactive movie. Several complaints of the game have been that it might as well have been a movie instead, but I strongly disagree. Firstly, the experience wouldn't have been the same if you hadn't spent so much time (around 10 hours) with these four characters. It being a "game" meant that it could last much longer than if it were a movie, which is a big plus. Secondly, the key term in the phrase "interactive movie" is the "interactive" part. I've heard there are at least 20 endings to the game, completely determined by your actions as a player. Yes, you always visit the same locations but your Ethan Mars will most likely be very different to your friend's. As long as you don't go in to Heavy Rain expecting traditional game mechanics like health or an inventory, your experience will be an enjoyable one.

Another complaint this game receives is that it is merely "one long quick time event". Though I will argue that you do spend a considerable amount of time walking around to see what to interact with, there is some truth in the argument. However, quick time events usually ruin a game because they feel out of place, like in Bayonetta or God of War. However, the quick time events here are extremely well implemented. I honestly don't think that the game could have been done in any other way. All quick time events feel appropriate and never cheap or require ridiculously fast reflexes. Overall, I thing the QTEs work.

One thing that makes the game much more immersive is the fact that there is no game over screen. While you can fail a QTE, this doesn't result in a "fail" in the traditional sense. This merely forces the game to change the story in response to what has just happened. Characters can even die, and they story will merely carry on. That is one of the reasons why the game is so good at making you connect with the characters. You aren't concerned about points, high scores or loot, but instead you are concerned about the characters. One of the most disturbing scenes in the game involves one of the characters cutting his thumb off. You don't actually have to do it, but (without spoiling anything) it is strongly recommended that you do. Being given this choice is extremely stressful, but one of the most beautiful reasons why is not because it decreases your points, morality meter or HP, but that you have to watch him do it to himself. Despite this, the player considers this a difficult decision, which speaks volumes on how well the game connects you to its characters.

The game isn't perfect, though. I can agree that the opening goes on for just a bit too long. It is all to get you connected to the character, but there is still a lot of nothing much happening towards the beginning. Also, the facial motion capture can look quite ridiculous at times, with the characters looking as though they have a broken jaw. The game normally looks phenomenal, but character's faces can look fairly rubber-like up close. However, one of the biggest issues is the replay value. One would assume that a game with so much player choice would be brimming with it, but the fact is the characters that YOU create become so connected to you that you will probably end up just choosing the same choices on your second playthrough. Some might be content with 10 hours, but some might expect more for a game for approximately £20.

Overall, this game is moving, original, engaging and made me learn about myself whilst I was playing which few other games can claim to have done. It shows not just that video games are capable of telling amazing stories, but that they are capable of creating stories that actually revolve around the player and that they can have gameplay that compliments a story-driven game without having to sacrifice the actual "game" part.

Since there are so many possible outcomes, it's a perfect game for playing more than once and to make different choices and consequently view different endings.
I used PS Move and that made it even more interesting.
I'd give it an even higher grade but controls where annoying sometimes, especially when moving a character around the screen and it seemed like Move controls could be a little bit more precise, sometimes they simply didn't respond well.

I would recommend this game to just about anyone looking for more narrative in their games. There really isn't a lot that isn't in your control when playing. Don't expect mindless action then cut scenes because this game isn't that. Now I love games and I won't say that most games are mindless but this game is engaging you until the very end to participate in every one of your characters actions. You can hear your characters thoughts and chose what they say and do or at least that is the feeling the developer trys to convey to me personally. I'm not sure they succeed 100% because I actually just beat the game and I probably won't play it a second time. At least not yet. I'm going to move on to other games for now. It's not really a short game either because it took me about 16 hours to beat it. It does sort of have that interactive movie/cut scene feel to it and that works because it's not an action game. It reminds me of telltales games the way that your choices affect the story. Now about the story which is very good and keeps you in suspense until the very end. I personally never guessed who the killer was or what his motives were but I was like wow what a good game when the credits rolled. The graphics were pretty good but I noticed that characters would walk through each other in one scene but it wasn't really a big deal. The voice acting was good and I had no complaints. so yeah it was a good game in my opinion and it deserves the 8 I give it. Heavy Rain is a story-driven adventure game with great atmosphere and passion. Some people have labeled it as an interactive movie, but it's really an adventure game at its heart.

The game's story involves 4 playable, unrelated characters whose storylines gradually interweave and affect each other. The overall story arc is about finding a missing boy (the son of one of the protagonists) who has been kidnapped by an "Origami killer" (a maniac who leaves Origamis at his crime scenes) in a rain-soaked city. There are also some other mini-stories for each character with their own appeal.

This is a game where choices have lasting effects, or may cause a character to die. You can even have all of the protagonists get killed, leading to a game over state. You can replay the game from the beginning and make different choices to see what different outcomes they yield.

The graphics do an amazing job to service the game's atmosphere and ambition. All characters have been mo-capped and look great, even though their voce acting isn't perfect. The music is OK.

The game's big problem though is the awful gamepad controls. I don't mean laggy or imprecise controls. It's a weird system where you have to push the R2 trigger to move forward in the direction you are currently facing, instead of just using the analogue stick in a straight-forward manner (it reminds me of the tank controls in some old games such as Resident Evil and Grim Fandango). There are some QTEs, but also an abundance of button prompts where you have to push various buttons in the sequence they are shown while simultaneously keeping the previous buttons still pressed down in order to go forward or else you have to repeat it from the beginning. It's crazy stupid.

Luckily though, the game's control issues are addressed if you play with the PS Move motion controller. Everything feels better that way, and the prompts make more sense. There is more fun when you move your, ehm, Move pad to follow the general movements of the protagonists.

Heavy Rain is a great game on its own, an adventure game and something different from the Call of Duties and the GTAs of this world. There is even an Origami included as a gift in the game's disc. Play with the PS Move controllers and you 'll enjoy the powerful story.

It is to be understood that creators wanted the player to be part of the characters’ experience from the minimally important and to the truly relevant, nevertheless, there doesn’t seem to be some balance.

It takes many of the elements that defined Indigo Prophecy and makes very noticeable improvements for sure. It beefed up it's production values, carried a more grounded story and had real meaningful consequences. In every way it is a far better game than IP...but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its stupid moments. Heavy Rain is deeply flawed, but I think it is legitimately enjoyable and well worth playing at least once. Hell, fist time I played the game I finished it all in a single sitting. It was that engaging.

The game follows multiple protagonist out on the hunt for the infamous Origami Killer, A serial killer that steals sons from their parents and drowns them in rain water. We have Ethan Mars, the unluckiest dad in the world, Madison Page, a reporter, Scott Shelby, the old school Private Eye, and Norman Jayden, the high tech FBI agent. Out of each of the characters, Norman and Scott were easily my favorites. Norman for how much of a smart ass he can be, and Scott for being gruff, yet having a bit of a soft spot. Hell, I think Scott has the most well defined character arc in the entire game, and even has the best attempt at a romance in any of Cage's work up to this point. Ethan is a sympathetic character for many reasons, but often flaccid in personality. Madison, though, contributes very little to the story outside of being a love interest for Ethan. You can honestly remove her all together and not much would really change. As I've mentioned, the game is not without its dumb moments or, worse, continuity errors and plot holes, but on the whole I found this game's story to be far more engaging for more of the right reasons than, say, Indigo Prophecy. There were genuine moments of intrigue, mystery, and even a few heartfelt moments sprinkled in. Far from perfect, but worth playing to completion. It's presentation, while certainly cutting-edge for its time, has aged considerably. Much of that age comes from the characters and how heavily they hit the uncanny valley. Often the facial expressions don't accurately portray the emotions that they are trying to go for and just look down right strange. The voice acting doesn't help matter either. Most of the cast consists of French actors trying to speak English, and hoo boy is it easy to tell. It can range from relatively solid to just downright laughable. Some characters like Ethan and Norman pull it off a bit better than others.

Like much of Cage's work, your enjoyment is going to be determined by how much you can tolerate its gameplay. The controls take a lot of getting used to. Rather than traditional analog control, you move characters by holding down the R2 button like they're a vehicle and then influence their direction. Otherwise, you will simply just move their heads to look around the environment for contextual items. It's very unconventional, but you'll get used to it pretty quickly. Like in IP, you will engage in QTEs, but instead of Simon Says you will be activating button prompts, analog movements and motion control movements. It's a hell of a lot more engaging than IP, and not only that but many of them have a very strong risk of your characters dying permanently. There are no game overs. It simply continues from there. That's one of the best parts of the game. How well you perform, how much you explore the environments and what choices you make throughout the game actually hold real consequences that can greatly change the outcome (though some choices are more significant than others). It makes for some tough decision making and the action sequences have more weight to them, making for some truly tense moments. That's one of the reasons why you get so invested with your favorite characters. You don't want them to die, so you are going to try your damndest to make sure they live.

Heavy Rain is one of the best examples of something that is jank, yet enjoyable. I seem to gravitate towards these types of games the most. The Good:

    - Very interesting narrative. Hooks you in. Like a good mystery detective show.

    - Voice acting is good

    - many of your decisions will impact the outcome. Not only the final outcome, but outcomes throughout your play.

    - The way the game does the dialogue is very good. You can always hear what the characters are thinking. Choices are made in real time, so you can't take too long to make a decision, making it feel real.

    - Quite a variety of settings

    - the plot surprised me. Very good twist.

    - Good build up of the characters. Made me quite invested in each.

    - QTE action sequences were done well. Can get exciting.

    --------------------

    The Bad:

    - Some of the QTE were awkward

    - The camera angles can screw with your movement sometimes.

    - Some of the dialogue options are too ambiguous and may not be what you intend the character to say

    - holding R2 to simply walk becomes annoying.

    - QTEs for menial tasks were unnecessary. It simply caused confusion, and unnatural movement. I just want to get in my car and drive away. Not press rotate my joystick to open the door, press a button to put on my seat belt, rotate my joystick to release the handbrake, then roll my joystick again to start the engine. This was ONE menial thing. There are many more.

I enjoyed the story and being able to shape it based on my actions, but what held the game back for me was the simply massive amount of quick-time events. Not because I can't handle them; I can pull them off perfectly at the hardest difficulty until the sun dies. Difficult, they are not. My problem with them is that when they're happening, you're immersed more in watching for the next prompt than the action. For example, in that real tense part near the beginning of the game where you drive against traffic, I can't remember 90% of that other than X, right, right, square, right, etc. Was it tense? I don't know, maybe? I wasn't truly paying attention. Essentially it's like trying to do sudoku to continue an action scene in a film. I know why David Cage did it, but I'm just not sure it was necessary. It's not all bad though, and I really did enjoy a lot of it, but it just wasn't as fun as other story driven games I've played lately like Uncharted 2 or Mass Effect 2. Definitely worth a rental; buy at your own discretion. Expand

This part of the game was absolutely ridiculous, you have a guy searching for the killer and helping the entire game, only to find out that HE is the killer. Just plain horrible writing. If this was a movie it never would have seen the light of day. All that said I thoroughly enjoyed most of the game and if the story was a little better, I'd say it deserves a 9 or 10. Still, it is worth a playthrough. And I may play it though again, at least to make the killer do bad things in the story, to make the ending plausible. Expand

The good things besides fantastic graphics are the style of the game, I really liked the change from traditional games. Here you don't have to run, jump, shoot, etc. It's like a movie where you have some control, not too much, but just enough to keep things working, and there are some moral choices you'll have to make. Also the characters do a great job to transfer their feelings and emotions, this is not a game with generic, empty characters. One thing I feared before playing it was the quick time event sequences. I played Indigo Prophecy before, and I didn't like those at all, but in Heavy Rain they actually make sense, this was a great improvement from Quantic Dream.
But then there are the bad things. Continuing on the control of the game, you use the left analog stick to move your character. Well, I can't believe that after all the thought and great implementation of the QTE controls, Quantic Dream forgot about something as simple as moving the character around. It is incredibly frustrating to do something so simple as walking, the character won't turn, or will turn too much, it will get stuck, etc. This is one of those problems that are simply not allowed to happen in a game. Fortunately, this game is more a "movie" than a game, so there is not that much walking around anyway and the game is at least playable.
And the other big problem is the story. In general it is a good, original, interesting story, where you must find a killer and save his last victim before it's too late. The problem comes when the story tries to keep you confused about who the killer might be. I like that in a good story. I liked in Six Sense that I never suspected that Bruce Willis character was dead all the time. I like when a movie makes you to suspect about a character when in the end turns up to be innocent. But when this things happen in a movie/story there is always a good reason to justify the behavior of those characters, something that in the end will make you think "ahh, so that's why he/she did that, and I was thinking he/she was the bad guy, shame on me!". This is not the case in Heavy Rain. The story has so many holes, so many situations where a character just does something to make you suspect he is the killer, but this things they do go to the point of being just ridiculous and nonsense, and have nothing to do with the story. Don't expect that by the end of the game there will be some explanation or something that ties things up, there isn't. I imagine David Cage (game writer and director) saying something like "lets make this character do this so gamers will think that's the killer. Oh! and lets make this other character do that so gamers will then think that one might be the killer too, it doesn't make sense but who cares, is just a game".
Yep, some times the story is just that bad, this speaks a lot about the lack of writing abilities of David Cage.
So for a game that is focused in telling a story, I can't believe it got such high scores from most of the critics when the story is full of holes. I see most of them only rate a game based on graphics, too bad.

You all are trying to find the Oragami Killer and the kidnapped boy. The game is practically an interactive movie that plays out similar with action scenes that consist of matching button prompts at the right time.

    Pros:
-For the most part the characters are well done and work as real people.
-Good story with multiple endings depending on what you do or don't do in the game. What you fail or don't fail at.
-The action scenes can be intense even though all you are doing are hitting buttons the screen prompts you to.
-Graphics, music, and voice acting are done well. At times just the sound of fearful breathing is enough to make you feel immersed.

    Cons:
-The character of Madison has no believable motive. The love story(if you choose to pursue it) don't seem at all realistic.
    -The controls are clunky
-The voice actors aren't American and sometimes a word is pronounced strangely.
-Gameplay isn't actually fun but this is the type of game that is more about the experience.

Conclusion: If you are skeptical of the whole "interactive movie experience" then this game probably won't win you over. If you liked The Walking Dead games and pine for a more serious Zodiac like story then this is up your alley.

While I don't think it's as great or innovative as many people claim it to be,(the same company made a very similar game called Fahrenheit a few years before), it is not as bad as others claim either. It falls in between. What I love, is that it takes the interactive narrative format from Fahrenheit to a new high. The cinematic story actually changes depending on what you choose. One of the people you are controlling can die and that has repercussions on figuring out who the killer is in time. More than one actually. And you wont know which choice determines what development. You really see a movie unfold before you and which is governed by your choices not knowing there are a bunch of other ways things could have turned out. This is very special.
However, the execution is not always perfect. For an interactive story to work as a game, you need 2 things, a solid story and solid game mechanics and it falls short on both.
The story has many, many plot holes and certain events just do not make any sense. The origami killer seems omniscient and supernaturally quick and stealthy which hurts any sense of realism the game is trying to achieve. It also does not help that anyone with half a brain can figure stuff out faster than either of the two people investigating the murders. A clue will be staring them in the face and they just won't get it.
The other point to make is that the controls are not great. They are fine for quick time events but controlling your character's movements is sometimes very clumsy. Your character will sometimes wander off somewhere you never intended, or won't be prompted to use stairs or open a cupboard even though the character is aligned with the correct direction. There are also a few glitches here and there. I had to restart a checkpoint due to a series of prompts not appearing when they should have.

Issues like these might be forgiven in other games where action style gameplay is the primary concern but since it is not the case here, the game really suffers for it. I still say it is worth your time since this is a very unique experience. However for an action adventure game with a noir setting, you are better off with LA Noir. And for a modern noir film (neo noir) experience, you are better off with Seven or Prisoners.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. David Cage has done it again. And by done it again, clearly, I mean, Cage has taken Indigo Prophecy and thrown it in a wash machine, spun it around, and taken it out to look at his brand new, sopping wet masterpiece that is Heavy Rain.
Hiding in the metaphorical center of France, David Cage sits in his office at Quantic Dream and churns out hit, after hit. Starting with the famously infamous thrill ride of poorly explained mystical powers given to a personality void protagonist. To follow up the award winning narrative, Heavy Rain was born.
The story of a simple man, a simple, ridiculously futuristic FBI agent with unexplained technology, a simple reporter with insomnia, and a simple private investigator of considerable weight. The first man, Ethan Mars, having already lost a son and experienced a coma due to a car accident of sorts, finds his son Shaun to be missing. Upon this new discovery, the kidnapper, of his last remaining son, known as the Origami Killer, leaves Saw-like challenges for him to complete in hopes of getting a few letters of the address of his son’s location. Being introduced as playable characters, the supporting cast help fill in the rest of the mystery, however nonsensical it may be, with their own individual investigations.
Assigned to the renowned Origami Killer case, Norman Jayden, a FBI agent with a serious dependency on some unknown drug that only exists in David Cage’s mind, jumps on the case with two feet. He uses his immense detective skills taught to him by the FBI to solve the case, in the form of a pair of glasses that literally show him where every piece of evidence is, what it means, and how its connect to other evidence.
Scott Shelby, a plump private investigator with an apparent soft spot for kids and good deeds travels around looking for any clues the Origami Killer could have left behind with the parents of the young victims. Shelby uses his vast experience in the investigatory field to never get arrested for anything, including the time, if you so choose to go down the story branch, he shoots up an entire mansion of body guards. And Madison Page, a hardboiled reporter with insomnia is there to...be female. What else is there to say. It’s David Cage, after all.
So, being a game specifically about the narrative, let’s talk about the narrative first. Being one to have experienced both Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, I can definitively say that the similarity between several scenes in each game is astounding. Coming from that standpoint, it is only slightly disappointing to have essentially paid for the same experience with different characters, and a vaguely more revealing gratuitous shower scene.
In addition to the similarity with Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain has been known for it’s massive plot holes, and over exaggerated storyline and plot points. The most noticeable plot hole being, just before Shaun’s disappearance, Ethan Mars experiences several blackouts, always coming-to in the middle of a street somewhere, grasping an origami figure in his hand. This made the player believe that maybe Ethan was the killer, especially since Ethan’s ex-wife, Grace, mentions to the police that Ethan had come to her house, mumbling something about drowning kids sometime around Shaun’s disappearance. But when this is never addressed again, and just forgotten about by every character involved in this God forsaken game, its leaves the audience baffled. It’s almost as if David Cage had written an entire supernatural plot where Ethan shares a special connection with the killer, experiencing his memories of drowning children, but decided not to include it, took it out, but left all of the signs and foreshadowing of that plot in the final product. Oh, wait. He did.
To further give the player a sense of utter confusion, Cage makes sure to include multiple murders all over the rainy city. Nearly everyone who is interviewed in the sake of the case is a murderer. One of which, a calculated serial killer who is just interviewed about an apartment he owns, but doesn’t even use.
The police in Heavy Rain really aren’t any better. A branch of the storyline that remains constant is the arrest of Ethan Mars by the police. They make this arrest with the most circumstantial evidence ever to be thought up. The testimony made by his ex-wife, Grace. With this “solid” evidence against him, the entire police force, and what appears to be an off-brand SWAT, track Ethan down and chase him onto the roof. But if you decided that Ethan should jump off that roughly five story building, the police look down at him, walking off with a minor limp and seemingly say to themselves, “Nah, that’s too much work. He’s gone for good.”
Well, it is a game, right? How is the gameplay? The gameplay is the most important part of a game, right? No, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but that is not the case for this “Playstation’s Great’s Hit” title carrier. But,

great visual novel, although a certain thing in the story tasted bitter to me, it is very good that you can choose possibilities and have consequences

I am honestly surprised at how high the metascore is for this game. I can only believe that all of the reviewers out there gave their rating before completing the game. It locked up my PS3 at one point, and at at the end of the game my character was stuck in one spot for the better part of 10 minutes. What's worse, is that this "game" is an interactive movie that should revolve around a well-designed plot. If the plot, script and acting were decent... it would be an amazing experience. The plot is full of holes, however, with many of the attempts at shock-and-awe coming off as just cheesy. So many events happen in the game with little or no plausible explanation. Things just happen and you are left to either accept the fallible event at face value, or quit playing. The game is not without it's good points... and may well be worth the first playthrough. I was moderately pleased that the ending did surprise me somewhat, but there is little shock in that when the game was full of so many plot holes that it would be impossible to make heads or tales of it. So in the end... it was moderately enjoyable for a first playthrough, but it also has many many issues. I fully expect the gaming communities opinions on this title to change in the month(s) to come post-release. Expand

First, I play quite a few games and feel that I'm very objective when it comes to critiquing and reviewing a game. Being completely honest... The graphics are pretty good, although I don't think they're as good as people proclaim. The gameplay is obviously what this game is built around, and is its strongest point. It does exactly what they intended, and makes for very fun action sequences. For the most part it does play like a movie and flows fairly well, although very poor movement controls can make it feel cumbersome in some areas. I think they should have done without the quick-time events in the slow scenes that aren't time-sensitive. Now for the bad points. I don't understand how anyone can overlook how terrible some of the animation, facial expression, voice acting, etc is. Also, the story is fairly entertaining and not too predictable, but is full of massive holes and is overall not that great. Uncharted 2 is cinematic and has a very very good story. That's what Heavy Rain needed to get a good score. If your game is centered around the movie-like story and gameplay, those should be your strong points. But alas, Heavy Rain isn't much more than a bad movie. I completely agree with other reviewers who say the characters look, act, and sound like robots, due to poor animation and voice acting. With all this taken into consideration, my only thought is that people must be falling for the hype machine, and rating this game high based off of a few intense / thrilling action sequences, rather than objectively looking at the quality of the different aspects of the game (compared to other titles with similar scores). For the people rating this a 10... Go play Uncharted 2, and then ask yourself if you really think Heavy Rain is as good (or even close). Uncharted 2 = close to perfection = 96% Heavy Rain = many flaws = ~65% Expand

I really wanted to love Heavy Rain, I really did. I liked Fahrenheit a lot, it had its flaws, but it was unique. With Heavy Rain, it could only get better now, couldn't it? Unfortunately, no. That is thanks to the lackluster voice acting, the unconvincing storyline, the lack of any dynamics in the cinematic action scenes and poor direction. This was marketed as a game for adults, but apart from the theme of the story, it isn't. It just doesn't really come together. When you focus so much on story and emotions, you better make damn sure your story is cohesive and you got the best voice actors there are. I partly blame David Cage for hyping this game so much, maybe my expectations were too high for it. Since he wrote and directed it I say most of the game's fault are his, because I was expecting an experience unlike anything else. With better writing and directing (somehow, Quentin Tarantino always comes to my mind) this could have been a milestone for gaming. Unfortunately the specks of brilliance are overshadowed by mediocrity. I won't even comment on the technical issues, as these have been convered in enough detail. All in all I am saddened by the whole affair. I really wanted it to be great. Expand

I want to start off by saying that I proudly support PS3 exclusives, so my opinion would, if anything, be biased in favour of the game. Everything about this game screams atmosphere and for that I give it credit. The graphics are quite beautiful and the music/sound effects are superb. The story isn't necessarily predictable, but it feels familiar. There were times when I needed to reboot the game because the character wouldn't register my prompts. As well, the characters would get caught up on pieces of furniture and would bring me to frustration. This game is more of an interactive movie than a game, as I'm sure you've read/heard. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but you should be aware of that heading into it. This game requires at least a rental; however, buyers beware: this game isn't worth the $60-70 price tag! 6/10. Despite my appreciation of what it was attempting, I was frustrated by the possibilities it flushed down the drain in a deluge of meaningless choices, bad controls, and a derivative mess of a story. In spite of all that, it could be exciting at times, and overall it felt new and fascinating, and I was left thinking this type of game has serious potential. If the player approaches Heavy Rain as an experiment, not as anything even remotely approaching a masterpiece of design or storytelling, then it can be appreciated as a precursor for hopefully better games to come. Worth a rent only, as the replay value you might expect from a story changing because of your choices is simply not achieved here. Expand

Put gaming conventions aside, go in with no expectations other than this is something new and massively good-looking, and you'll be rewarded with a unique experience that lurches between genius and madness, manages to be genuinely emotional, and that you'll be bursting to talk about with your friends. 2. For many people Heavy Rain won’t be more than a progression of quick-time-events, but for me this game has everything a great game needs. The thrilling story, the beautiful graphics and the innovative controls will let you play on and on, till you just can’t look any longer into your TV.
