In Far Cry 3 it was just jungle, jungle, jungle and green, green, green.

The story and voice acting is decent and oh, the accents. The main villain is interesting enough. And there's nothing better than being victorious after slaying a handful of enemies. Because unlike the later Far Cry games, this game is actually challenging. You have a very limited health and ability to heal. And the battles really feel like battles. The tension is real when you have to hide behind your car when taking fire from all sides. And the music just fits the game and atmosphere perfectly.

(I played this game in 2010 I'm just now writing the review.)

It is still my favorite FPS of all time because of its amazing atmosphere and its attention to detail in the environment. In my opinion this game has the highest degree of immersion ever. For example there is no minimap or other notifications on the screen, no arrows that indicate where the enemies are and no seeing through walls. Instead you have to navigate with a physical map and a compass. It just feels real.

I would like to see more of these mechanics, but i doubt any of the modern gaming developers will do so. Rather they will make a mass suitably game for the mainstream.

    PROs:

    - highly immersive
    - attention to detail in the environment
    - very good graphics
    - big open world

    CONs:

    - mediocre storyline
    - respawning enemies
    - outpost and patrols keep shooting you every 2 minutes
    - stealth mechanic a little broken
    - repetetive side-quests

Players accustomed to the humor and pacing of Far Cry 3, 4, and 5 will find themselves surprised or stunted. Far Cry 2 is difficult and isn't ashamed if it. The game is all about portraying the grittiness of a completely broken and colonized country worn to the bone by war and terror. Though the story isn't strong, the game feels fantastic and the world is believable. I still remember how entrancing the world was when I first booted up FC2 and explored. The music is incredibly atmospheric and the environment feels authentic. In my humble opinion, Far Cry 2 is what Far Cry should be. Not a pleasant round of target practice featuring some cult run by a depraved leader, but a serious and challenging game.

Many people don't like it because of the repetitiveness, but they just don't have something called 'imagination'. There are hundreds of ways to approuch each mission, here are a couple of examples: - Normal shooting. - Ramming a jeep into the enemies while throwing molotovs through the windows. - Make a fire around their camp, then wait and let the wind blow the fire right into their base. - Snipe enemies and use silencer's to do a secret 'attack'. - Place a bomb onto your vehicle, park it into their base and explode it, causing their base to burst into flames, slaughtering enemies. And the long driving, it's fun for me. For the game I would give a 9, but for myself a 9.5, but with the map editor and multiplayer it defenitely deserves a boost to ten. Make some rally or other race tracks, invite your friends and have fun online! How about a fortress? With the game mode set to defend the camp? There is so much of opportunity in this game! I would highly recommend it to GTA lovers. Expand

The graphics and gameplay are still better than some games released in 2020, which is honestly very pathetic. It was way ahead of it's time. Great weapons selection, a bit limited but it compensates for having guns like the explosive arrow crossbow (Fortune's Edition), 8 golden AKs, and of course my all time favourite, the Desert Eagle. Funny, since it's also the only game that finally made the Desert Eagle look good, all other games from that era, except CoD4, made it look like absolute trash.

This is a not a fast paced run and gun FPS.
It is a slow adventure in an open world setting. You can do missions in any order you like. The setting is ideal for tactical approach of the targets with sniper rifles and silent weapons. It is very realistic with great attention to detail. Strongly recommended for sniping action and hours of gameplay similar to RPG games. Overall a great game!

The waist-high grass in the savanna sways with the wind currents sweeping over the plains and fast moving thunderstorms rush up on you without warning. If you wanted, you could actually sit and watch massive cloud formations slowly creep by as the sun arcs across the sky before dipping over the horizon, casting some of the most spectacularly replicated lighting effects ever produced in any game. The world is simply breathtaking. The gameplay is relatively easy to pick up, fitting neatly into most recognized FPS conventions. Gameplay does begin to feel a bit stale at times, as the repetitive nature of some missions and almost all transportation leaves something to be desired. Gunplay is a mixed bag with a good variety of weapons that perform to varying levels of adequacy, nothing exceptional here. The weapon degradation system is original and does serve to spice up combat, as you'll never know when a weapon is going to jam up on you, or even fail completely and backfire. Vehicles are sturdy and handle realistically, but are affected by damage quickly. The voicework is competent, if a but hurried, but the writing and casting are spot on. The AI is relatively simple, but effective. Vehicle mounted enemies will use the turret, while the drivers dismount initially use the vehicle for cover before attempting to flank you. Other enemies use similar tactics, scrambling for cover after the first few shots, then some while advance to suppress you and draw fire while other attempt to flank you. With an environmental model so accurate, the key to stealth in Far Cry 2 is following a few essential guidelines. 1) Only work at night. This significantly limits the enemy field of vision. 2) Headshots are necessary. Even with the dart rifle. If an enemy makes noise while he's dying, everybody can hear it. Avoid the machete when multiple enemies are close for this reason. 3) Move after you shoot. Multiple shots form the same spot will expose your position. For any gamer interested in an intriguing story and entertaining gameplay, rest assured that the totality of the package redeems any lackluster components. Not a must-buy, but a definite must-play. The scenery is just amazing and the special effects are astounding (particularly the fire effects). The detail put into this game really sperates it from others. Single player has a free to roam concept, and the world is massive (More than 50km2 and no loading). This is the games greatest benefactor and also it's biggest problem. Since the world is so massive, it is often very time consuming to do just 1 mission. It can take ~20 minutes just to get to where you need to go, in a vehicle. Sometimes, you are stuck on foot for a good 5-10 minutes before you can even find that vehicle. On the flip side, the missions are most of the time fun to do and you often find yourself immersed in a huge fire fight sometime during them. Picking what mission to do and how to execute them, also puts a "Fable" like experience into the game. The console versions only have predefined save points, which is a real let down in such a massive world. FC2 also has a real-time day / night cycle and a dynamic weather system. When you get harmed in the game, healing yourself can be a pretty gruesome task. You will be finding yourself ripping bullets out of your limbs, popping broken bones back into place, and sometimes pulling out shrapnel. The multiplayer is another aspect of this game that they made very well. It has a variety of different sized maps (The game even has a map editor). So there are plenty of things you can do with a map, and rarely get that repetitive feel. There is also a decent amount of guns to choose from, and upgrade to, via the leveling system. Sadly, there are not many game modes to select from, and a 16 person cap is very generic. Overall, this game is just stunning and is a must buy. Expand

Whatever happens you'll believe it's a real world and a fantastic setting for the action. It's not as dense or as varied as, say, Oblivion - you'll go somewhere, kill everyone, every mission - but it's utterly convincing and engrossing. [Dec 2008, p.98]

Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]

Even if I find the multiplayer too staid, I find the possibility of cool user-made levels (via the easy map editor) tantalizing. Like any good Grand Theft Auto, Far Cry 2's overall package makes up for any individual flaws -- enough for it to be on a short list of best FPS games this year -- and so it's fitting to summarize it as...well, GTA: Mogadishu.
