Awesome RPG open world game. Great, moving, immersive story, or you could just wander the Capital Wasteland! Totally up to you. Very interesting characters and enemies scattered across the Wasteland.

Game is amazing but yes it has some bugs (did not bother me) and it crashes sometimes. I 've spent over 100 hours on it and I just love it. Crashes started after 70 hours of gameplay. I had one or two crashes every 5 hours... so not so bad...

GAMEPLAY: Great with V.A.T.S. being a fun feature that you will use time and time again. Exploration is recommended and encouraged. Beware though danger is always present...
PROGRESSION: If you like character build up then you're in heaven because Fallout 3 gives you lots of choices here. Max level could be higher though.
Although the lack of a great story and charismatic characters is noticed Fallout 3 is still an amazing experience. Mandatory to all RPG fans.

It had so much to do, lasted 100s of hours, abandoned buildings with still-functional computers, of which you could read logs and activate machines to open up new areas or to find out what happened here when the war took place.

Sadly, this game isn't perfect. Lag, crashing, some bad AI and frame rate issues can really dampen the experience. More than a few times I have lost hours of exploring the Wasteland due to crashing, or even getting stuck in a rock. It is obvious in some places this game was meant for PC, and I would advise it for PC, but if you can't, it is still a brilliant console experience.

In short I would recommend the game to anyone, as I found it very enjoyable as a complete package despite its falls. That said though, I feel that Fallout New Vegas (which is not a perfect game either) is a better buy because it addresses some of the issues in Fallout 3 and I feel it is a better game overall, so I would advise you to get Fallout New Vegas as well as Fallout 3.

Full Review (my score is actually 8.5)

First thing about Fallout 3 is how interesting the open world experience is. You will constantly find new and interesting characters, locations and weaponry. This is particularly enhanced by the vast variety of enemies, from the zombie like Ghouls, to the cannibal Raiders, to the giant Super Mutants, e.g. require a slight variation in combat to beat, e.g. Raiders will use traps and numbers, while Super Mutants tend to favour brute force. This in combination with good A.I (though enemies use cover a bit more would be nice) makes for a really fun experience, and makes Fallout one of those games were a planned hour game session quickly turns into a 2 or 3 hour game session.

That leads nicely to the next great thing about Fallout which is the vast content. I played over 40hours and still didn’t explore everything, and do every side quest so you get your money’s worth. Speaking of quests it should be noted that while the main quest is slow to get going, as you basically keep going from one location to another with little result; the rest of the quests are each interesting and different. That said though the quest do take a long time to complete especially in the early stages where you have to explore key locations, rather than just fast travel to a location near by your objective.

Furthermore unlike other RPGs I have played, Fallout 3 even on normal difficulty is surprisingly challenging. This is partial because of the fact that your equipment and skills suck at the start, and each fight with a hard enemy can feel challenging. This in combination with the fact that you become largely dependent on Megaton (the town you first go to) for selling your gear, can make the game feel annoying at times, but trust me such annoyances quickly ware off. As a result of such difficulty it took me to level 15 till I felt the game became too easy. That said if you are put off by this Fallout New Vegas will suit you better because I found it to be equally emissive but is more gamer friendly e.g. it doesn’t reduce the EX points you getting for killing enemies if you lower the difficulty.

The main mix bag of the game is the use of VATS which in combat you use to select a body part to shoot with a percentage chance of hitting the body part. This is an interesting take on combat because if you cripple a body part it will affect your enemy e.g. cripple an arm (providing they are using a two handed weapon) they will drop there weapon. What is also good about this system is that although the head is the obvious weak spot it is often the area you are least likely to hit, so there is always a sense of taking a gamble when using VATS. The problem with the system though is that you find yourself becoming dependent on it particularly at the start as you don’t get damaged while you use it, so it is very useful. The dependence on VATS is made use by how in normal combat your movement is sluggish and enemies are pretty accurate so combat without VATS isn’t that great. I wish that the developers of the game placed less emphasis on VATS and made the game feel more like a FPS, making combat smoothing and your aiming more precise.

So what are the negatives of the game? The least surprising one is that bugs are present in the game e.g. it crashed a though times, and sometimes characters would get stuck going to places requiring you to re load your save file. So if you are put off by New Vegas because of the bugs present remember Fallout 3 suffers from the same problem.

The next main problem is how the game has some annoying restrictions that I can’t figure out why the developers put in. The most annoying of which is that the game prevents you from levelling up beyond level 20. This makes no sense cause if you want to maintain difficultly, you can turn up the difficulty level. Other annoyance include how you rarely use energy weapons at the start of the game so you focus on levelling up other skills, yet towards the end you become almost dependent on energy weapons.

The final complaint is the ending isn’t that great, and I won’t spoiler it for you, but don’t hold your hopes up.

One of the best games I've ever played, bar none, and up there with the likes of Bioshock Infinite. The questing and game play in this game is very top notch and fun to play over and over as you try out different types of characters.

The story is okay, but stutters a little from the side effect of chasing a constantly moving character, and it starts to get irritating after a little.

Shortly put an amazing game. very long hours of gameplay a good story line and nice gameplay as well. ill talk about each category the good stuff then the bad stuff.

    Good stuff

Gameplay: imagine Oblivion or Skyrim with guns then you got fallout. it appears to be your standard first person shooter but with a few twists and very different weapons. Such as the fat man which launches mini nukes. Or perhaps the mesmerizer which stuns your enemies and allows you to take them prisoner. There was only two things i didn't like about the gun play. The first is that you cant line up your sights this makes it hard to shoot enemies from far away unless you have a sniper rifle which leads me to. the sniper rifle gameplay unless you have a high condition sniper rifle there is going to be alot of scope sway and you cant hold your breath like in say battlefield. but besides the gun play theres alot of other things that make the gameplay good. one of the big components about fallout 3 is the scavenging and it was executed perfectly. Theres a variety of food water and even drugs that you can take to either boost your health or perhaps attack damage. And depending upon your situation you may need to eat radiated food and increase your rad level. when the rad level increases it damages stats and eventually will kill you. it was an excellent way to take advantage of the nuclear war aspect. in the end id give gameplay a solid 8/10

graphics: the graphics for the time are very impressive it really manages to create a post apocalyptic environment. it looks very barren and dead with the destroyed buildings and wide open wasteland. filled with dead trees and mutated creatures. It also features a unique animation style that ive only seen in bethesda games such as skyrim and oblivion. the facial animations are pretty good but not ground breaking in my opinion but the amount of detail they put into many of the smaller things makes up for it. a problem i noticed was the a would be walking through the desert and the ground wouldnt be fully loaded and finish loading as i was walking over it. and it was very agitating and not the first time ive seen this happen in a bethesda game.

story/voice acting: the story is pretty great not gonna lie kind of slow at first but when it gets going its really awesome not gonna post any spoilers but it went above and beyond of what i expected for a post apocalyptic story there is also and enormous amount of side quests that you can do some are big enough to carry their own story there own selves. and for the most part the voice acting is good for the main characters but when you talk to side characters such as ghouls its almost like they use the same voice for all of them and im not joking or exaggerating sometimes the voice will switch completely mid sentence it really is disappointing to see something like this after playing skyrim. i expected more from a reputable company like bethesda.

bad stuff believe it or not there is a few things some people just ignore or neglect to mention

glitches ive seen a few people mention this and they are pretty bad sometimes characters will get stuck to a wall such as a dog that was my friend he glitched into a door and i thought he was gone for good and also i was doing a mission and there was a glitch where the bad guys wouldnt come and i couldnt continue so i had to restart to go to my last save and start from where i last saved as you could imagine i wasnt happy another bad glitch is weapon changing in the game you have a quick select to change weapons quickly alot of times it glitches and wont change weapons getting me killed ALOT.

impossible missions i started a mission where you had to free slaves they then took all my gear and threw me into a gladiator pit with two brutes with strong armor and they had a flame thrower and a high class melee weapon it was virtually impossible to beat and i only had a baseball bat and couldnt even backtrack to leave the mission

overall this is a great game but has flaws like every good movie or game but it does have some severe flaws so it only gets a 8/10

Like the name correctly suggested the Fallout setting was adapted into the Elder Scrolls game mechanics. While some fans of the initial two games dislike this approach the majority enjoyed this game. For reference this was my introduction in the Fallout series and only a few years later I acquired Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 in a bundle. Fallout is described as a post apocalyptic RPG. The world was stuck in the culture of the 1960 while the technology was far advanced (but from a style point outdated) when the nuclear war devastated the whole world. You explore the Wasteland around the capital of the USA. Exploration, interesting characters and dark humor are the strengths of the game. You never know what you encounter and there are many Easter eggs and references. You create your own charcter with stats and as you level up learn new abilities. You are limited in a way that you cant learn everything or be good at all tasks. While all skills have their usefulness some are far more useful than others. Persuasion helps a lot in this game (and in the expansions). The battle system is OK but compared to other games a bit clunky. There is the reason that the VATS system existed. Basically you stop time and aim at your enemies. When finished all will be executed but you must wait a certain time until you can reuse it. Some skills and higher stats improve this. I should mention that the stats and skills are well interconnected. The main story is a good vessel and has some twist. There is of cause the staple that you have different factions and a Karma system. While there are some changes it has no mayor impact like in New Vegas or Fallout 4. The side stories / quests and characters are fantastic. You will be entertained. The soundtrack is OK especially the idea with the radio stations. The graphic while looking good is too monotonous for me. My complaints are the bugs in the game (also a staple for Fallout and Elder Scrolls) and the lackluster ending. They fixed this in an add on because of mayor complaints For the ending I will subtract a point. I would give this at its time a 9/10 but would give less now because Fallout New Vegas improved the formula tremendous. Overall a really good start for this remodeled IP. Expand

Good: amazing story based on a classic pc RPG series. This game defines what open world RPG games should be. Graphics are great, unlimited replay ability, fantastic story and universe. Hours and hours of gameplay.

Bad: glitches and freezing at some points... Only reason this game isn't a 10

OVERALL: must buy, hundreds of hours of gameplay. Cant wait for fallout 4

Fallout 3 was my first experience with a Bethesda Games Studio title. Everything about it initially overwhelmed me - the large open world, the menu system within the Pip Boy 3000, the multiple choices available during every moment, and last, but certainly not least, the freedom to do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted.

But the more I played Fallout 3, the more I began to comprehend how everything worked and the better my experience with it became. Like Dr Strangelove, I learned to stop worrying and love the Wasteland - every battle was a struggle for survival and every minute of exploration was filled with tension because I did not know what could be waiting around every corner. But when I bested my enemies and discovered new locations, there was the rewarding sensation of making progress - by either receiving experience points or finding new gear that would improve my chances of survival so I could once again push forward into more unexplored territory.

It's this satisfying gameplay loop that ultimately defines Fallout 3 beyond it's wondrously bleak setting and bizarre inhabitants that can be either friend or foe. Even then, Fallout 3's locales and wide variety of characters still deserve praise. Locations are like shadowy husks of their former glory days - filled with memories and clues (and sometimes valuable loot) that hint about the world before it was burned by nuclear fire. To complement these desolate locations are the deranged or defiant inhabitants who struggle to either survive or dominate Fallout 3's world. This means that combat is never dull and the opportunity of finding a companion to join you on your journey throughout the Wasteland remains a tantalising prospect.

The main story is extremely satisfying with no short supply of plot twists or unexpected moments, while the side quests provide their own unique narrative threads that are equally satisfying, all of which is a testament to the excellent quality of Bethesda Game Studios writing talent.

The only shortcomings of Fallout 3 are it's level cap (Level 25 is the maximum you can reach) and the ending of the main story that prevents you from continuing to explore the Wasteland after you've finished the last story based quest. However, the Game of the Year Edition contains bonus content that extends the level cap to 30 and an alternative ending that allows you to continue exploring the Capital Wasteland.

In summation, Fallout 3 remains one of the Top 100 Greatest Games of All Time.

Fallout 3 was the chapter, in Fallout's saga, that made me fall in love with this magnificent and magical universe. My love for Fallout 3 was fate: since the first video-gameplays released by Bethesda, I realized that this game should have been mine. And I have to thank it, because it let me know the two previous chapters as well.

I'm part of that large group of players, who learned about Fallout, thanks to Fallout 3 and then the whole saga's backstory and plot, it's been brought to me with this game. I learned about the 2077's Great War, the technologyc retro-futuristic future, experiments with Vaults, and everything else, just playing Fallout 3. The legacy of the historical background it's been harvested to perfection. Bethesda has made the concept of Fallout 3, very close to what it is to live our life in the real world. You were born in the Vault, you grew up in the Vault, you left the Vault and you deal with a whole new world. From microcosm to macrocosm, the Lone Wanderer follows a ritch along with the player that, thanks to Fallout 3, begins to know the true world of Fallout. This philosophy, this concept is brilliant. Simply brilliant. The plot makes perfectly the sense of violent and mature epic, an adventure into the unknown to discover a whole new world. From Vault 101 to Galaxy News Radio, from Rivet City to Tranquility Lane, from Vault 87 to Raven Rock; the plot is simply an unforgettable odyssey. The use of narrative devices of first Fallout, as the water stands for life, and Fallout 2, Enclave and the find of GECK, were very well integrated, adding that little bit extra derived from the Bible's quote, and the theme of a son looking for his father running away, which is his only real contact with the world outside.

Fallout 3's gameplay is quite extensive. Assuming first that it's no longer a turn-based RPG with isometric view, and that many game mechanics, have been altered. For who starts with Fallout 3 obviously this change is not visible. Although the gameplay of Fallout and Fallout 2 was near perfect, I have to admit that this new incarnation in Fallout 3, as well as shocking, it worked. It worked great. The change to first/third person view and real time combat is something that Fallout needed, and it's been done quite well. The beginning is extraordinary because the main character is born: the adventure literally begins with you, and use the editor to give him the look you want is great and accurate. The game has a high difficulty rate: during the first 20-30 hours of play, you limps to move forward, trying to survive. Stimpaks, ammunitions and maintenance of weapons and armors are essential. It's a difficult step at the beginning, but that's the fun part: everyone has to do it. The progression system of the character is very well done and faithful to the classic; skills weigh heavily on the development and use of weapons, items, or in the interaction with NPCs. The S.P.E.C.A.L. system is essential and, rightly, it hardly changes in the course of the adventure. The V.A.T.S. works nice, and it's fun to use. Pip-Boy 3000 was made very well and it is very useful for the control of information and holotapes, radio listening, progression in quests and inventory. The dialogue system is refurbished, but yet very classic and well made. Some actions like to pick a lock, or to hack a terminal are represented on the screen in great detail, and it really gives you the sensation of what you are doing. There are many companions, and they are useful, but in some cases they can die very easily, so they need medical cure. The map of Washington D.C. is very wide and there is plenty to explore, many side quests to complete, and secrets to discover. The level of gore, splatter and violence is extraordinary and great, true to the saga.

Graphically Gamebryo makes Fallout 3 very nice to see. Certainly not the best, but some details such as caring in guns, hands, clothes, facial animations, and settings are simply breathtaking. The art style is simply unforgettable, and makes fall in love quickly with retro-futurism and steampunk. The soundtrack by Inon Zur, as well, is particularly beautiful. Songs available in the radio stations are fantastic, of a completely different era, yet beautiful. Fallout 3 made a young audience to rediscover musical classics; and this is to create culture and consciousness of something we haven't seen, nor heard. Talking about bugs: it's true the game has many, most of them are annoying, but others are absolutely irreverent and memorable.

So: what is Fallout 3? Fallout 3 is exactly the third chapter as it should be. Simply the best Fallout game since, because the change of game mechanics, corrects a lot of its predecessors and has set new standards for future RPGs. It was 2008, and we all needed Fallout 3; let's admit it. It isn't just a game, is a legacy of another time, something we needed. Bethesda gave us a timeless masterpiece.

This game is great for anyone who can look past the bugs and glitches. The map is huge and the game is very addicting. You can easily spend 100+ hours on this game as there is many side quests and the game even puts in a sort-of unmarked quest of collecting all the bobbleheads to increase skills. So I would highly recommend that you play is game.

    Great character development
    Great radio
    Nice intro to the game
    Only negatives were :
    Visuals was too green
reliance on VATS was a bit too much
    Melee weapon combat needs improvement

While the graphics weren't amazing and the colour palette was lacking, the story and characters made up for that! There are some things in this game that I really wish they would've put in Fallout 4, like the Enclave or the Karma, which makes me feel like this game is separate to Fallout 4 (even though I know it isn't).
Sadly, since playing Fallout 4, I think I would struggle to go back to this game because of the massive difference in graphics and game play, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great game!

Being one of the highest-rated PS3 games, my expectations for Fallout 3 were high and in the end it was one of my best purchases of 2016. I never played a Fallout game before and I had a great experience despite its disastrous optimization, which led to glitches, freezes and crashes. It's probably not the best in the series but it introduced me to a great franchise.

The story is okay but there are two major scenes that were really anti-climactic. A lot of people hate the prologue but it was fine for me. Some side-quests have actually better narrative than the main ones and Bethesda is much better at environmental storytelling. I really liked the atmosphere, the towns and the feeling of loneliness. It was something different for me, as I didn't use to play this type of games at the time. The Capital Wasteland is a great place to explore for hours. You simply don't know what location you are going to find or what is going to happen during your journey in the vast open world. It's fun and I loved its dark humor. It's not a horror game but sometimes it could easily be considered one. I like when a game has room for creepy stuff and Fallout 3 knows how to deliver those moments.

I also liked the leveling up and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L, V.A.T.S and skills systems. I really felt that my character was getting stronger as I leveled up and I love that you can have so many different builds from a sniper to a ninja, a retard, a charismatic guy who solves conflicts without firing a gun or a maniac that destroys everything in his pass with a Fat Man that shoots mini nukes. It has replay value if you're interested in trying other builds.

The voice acting is not that good. I loved hearing Liam Neeson as my character's father but there are a lot of NPCs with the same voice actors and you end up having a whole bunch of characters with literally the same voice. This is an issue that was also present in Oblivion. You would think that a big company like Bethesda would have the money for more actors. At least it adds to the fun aspect of the game. The music is subtle but good (unless you explore the map while listening to the radio) and the landscapes are great, as well as most locations.

The worst thing about this game is its technical aspect and I am specifically talking about the PS3 version. It was a real shame that after surpassing 6 MB of save data the game started freezing, chrashing and glitching (similar to Skyrim but not that bad). It's impossible to beat Fallout 3 without seeing your screen freeze at least once or twice. At least seeing Deathclaws ascending to the sky was pretty hilarious, but it was really frustrating when the game kept crashing or freezing. I became paranoid and had to save every 5 minutes in case something happened and my progress was lost. At first, I couldn't start Mothership Zeta's first quest because the game froze three times in a row.

The DLCs are fine and the most memorable for me was Point Lookout, probably because is the only open world expansion with a big new region to explore, harder enemies and a creepy atmosphere. The other four are pretty short but very different one from another. The Pitt is interestingly weird, the alien-themed Mothership Zeta is repetitive, the action-focused Operation: Anchorage is short but fun while is lasts and Broken Steel continues the base game's story (making the original ending's choices meaningless).

It's still a great video game, though. I had a great experience with it but I can't rate it higher because of its terrible technical issues. Despite all that, I think that it's a very recommendable game but probably your best bet is to play it on PC.

It's rare that a game can hit the mark in so many different and often conflicting areas. Fallout 3 offers freedom without sacrificing a focused story. It delivers fantastic combat without forgoing a deep role-playing system. The characters you meet are engaging and oftentimes hilarious without feeling out of place in this harsh world.
