Not the best the series offers but its definitely overhated its not a bad game by any means and we can only wonder what the game Ninja Theory would have made if Capcom didn't keep involving themselves in the development

Appallingly mediocre in every aspect. Everything from the sophomoric storyline to the painfully repetitive button mashing combat is a disappointment. The atmosphere of fun that has characterized the Devil May Cry series is gone, replaced by the same grimgritty slosh that has completely destroyed modern FPS games. If you are a 12 year old boy who has just discovered video games and the

DmC Devil May Cry reinterprets the lore and characters of the original saga with a gritty take in a more modern, urban setting giving the game a stylish personality, although the overly edgy tone can sometimes lead to painfully corny moments. Nonetheless, the deeper characterization of its cast and the dramatic weight of the story makes up a narrative that is ultimately much more engaging than any of the ones in the four original games. Combat offers a set of extremely diversified weapons, allowing for many different strategies developed through combos that feel extremely fast and satisfying thanks to most weapons being available at once, reaching the best combat fluidity in the entire series yet. Fights are made even more fun via enemy types, as their weaknesses and resistances pleasantly challenge the player's quick thinking and adaptability. Sadly, only fights against common enemies offer some real engagement, as Boss fights are few and extremely lackluster, with ridiculously repetitive and simple attack patterns, and the Style Ranking system was also dramatically dumbed down rewarding easy spam rather than strategic play. Level Design challenges the player with a greater emphasis platforming, navigating the environment through jumps, dashes and precise timing, but rarely enough to be truly engaging or exciting, instead merely providing a decent change of pace.

The game, soundtrack, atmo and gameplay is simply awesome! everything you expect from a Devil May Cry game, they delivered. Ninja Theory are masters of their craftmanship and this is one of their best works.

A pretty good game. Combat and levels are interesting and varied. The best platforming in the DMC series. Story is mixed which lets the game down severely.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. DMC Devil May Cry was Capcom's attempt to offer a known franchise with a new face to attract a new audience, the western one. However Devil May Cry games have always stood in the perfect spot where it's very western for japanese players and also very japanese for western players.

The result was a disaster that tries to cling onto the past while at the same time trying to spit on it's legacy...?

The game offers some welcome and other unwelcome changes to the combat system, such as the addition of demon and angel weapons, allowing you to use simplified combos with the new system, and the unfortunate removal of lock-on.

The characters are all insufferable, such as Dino who takes the archetype of Nero and the moniker of Dante, posing as very rude and arrogant from the very start of the game to everyone, even the non-demons. Normally this wouldn't be an issue if the game took the necessary steps to show his development into becoming a more rational person, but that just doesn't happen. Even Kat who is supposed to be there to make him become a better character from narrative standpoint is not a good person.

    The chakrams are cool.

Nobody asked for this capcom, it was terrible, and a step back. Learn from this and move on. To be fair, it had a couple of good gameplay elements. This was not Devil May Cry, and the title was silly. Also, how could you release something so subpar like this, in the face of Bayonetta? Did we upset you capcom, or is it because some original devs have left you. And you are now taking it out on us?

You should have just moved on to DMC5, but let this just be a lesson learned, and please don't bring dmcdmc back. Just start on DMC6.

PS. the joke capcom and ninja theory, left in the game to crap on old school dmc fans. Is like adding fuel to the flames. Was not smart or funny at all, especially when you are adding in dlc.

    "No one: . . .

Nah, this game isn't great. It isn't all bad like some will make it out to be, but the game really isn't worth a purchase in any sense.

The great combat is still here (somewhat), but the platforming is INCREDIBLY boring and the levels are useless from a gameplay standpoint. It's also can run as low as 15 fps during combat, so that's a huge turn off.

The game is 7 hours long, but replaying it is impossible given the terrible story and framerate. You probably should be fine missing this one, even as a die-hard DmC fan.

2021 and I still refuse to think this is a Devil May Cry game.

I don't get it, is it really every game series have crazy fans who's aggressively refuse to accept any major differences to their favourite game series? Why there is so many negative reviews? Everyone whining like this game called DMC 5, but it's not, this is just a reimagining of the series, like a spin-off or something, why taking this that serious?

Game looking good, average plot, and FUN gameplay, various enemies and fighting styles, one con is that it's not hard in some moments, more casual or arcade style maybe. I liked all hard boss fights in the previous games, but I got some fun playing this more casual one as well, so I don't see the problem here

The graphics and gameplay was okay first played it on the PS3 but somehow Ninja Theory ruined it the design of the characters most especially Dante and the repetitive scenarios in each chapters I don’t know why Capcom agreed to this garbage such a horrible reboot the ending wasn’t really that great compared to the first and original Devil May Cry after a big fight with Mundus (Antagonist) you are about to battle Vergil (Dante’s twin brother) only to find out that Kat wants Vergil alive. Yes, I do hate the new take on Dante, Vergil and Mundus. I really do. But the game is so fun to play. Between the constant combat, fear of the very city itself killing you, and the very nice soundtrack, DmC: Devil May Cry is a nice hack and slash that I recommend to past and new Devil May Cry fans.

However, I did not have to play too much to realize that the new design actually fits and that the storyline is plausible in relation to the other games. More importantly, DmC is a very good beat 'em' up game; gameplay is addictive and there are a significant variety of settings, weapons and possible combos to perform.

With prejudices, DmC cannot be enjoyed nor regarded as it truly is. Leaving differences with the other games and some minor mistakes aside, DmC is an excellent action video game per se.

If nothing else, DmC is sure to entertain with many hours of button hammering, fizzing combat. However, the experience as whole has hugely benefitted from a reboot and those who are familiar with the series will appreciate the new features and relish the opportunity relive Dante’s origin story. DmC, as a combat driven action title has held together the soul of the franchise, while enhancing all in-game features to create a unique experience for everyone.

Ninja Theory deserves credit for not only delivering smooth combat and telling an entertaining story, but also for crafting detailed character models without lip-synch errors, who show real emotion and wear clothing that moves along with them. This is what a 2013-game should look like. [February 2013, p.72]

Ninja Theory are calling the DMC shots now and they're doing it well. The fighting mechanics are a little bit easier to master and perhaps not as deep as before, but on the other hand the storytelling is improved with skillfully crafted cutscenes. Put up with a rather dull introduction and you're in for a great game.
