This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After seeing the remake announcement I thought it was best to go back and play this (even though the servers are no longer on line). Even with no other players this game still has the charm and fear I remember from the first time playing it. I know people complain about the world alignment system but its novelty was needed to add a little more to the world and its story. Magic is as overpowered as I remember but with the difficulty it means nothing if you can't react fast enough. The only thing I do miss is the mutliplayer, the feeling of going around vast areas with equally terrified friends was on a whole new level. (never co-op the blind/old hero unless you want to see him jump around like a kangaroo on steroids if its the same in the remake). Expand

The souls series have been relying on their action elements more and more recently, and it's refreshing to revisit the series before it found its identity in action, because the souls games have NEVER been good at that.

Your choices really matter in this game. NPCs don't just sit around waiting for you, you really have to be careful. The game isn't difficult when compared to more recent entries into the genre (Hollow Knight, Nioh), but it's far more unforgiving than any of those games, and it's that that makes the game so special.

This game is still fantastic 10 years later. The recent souls games and all the "souls-likes" have just helped me appreciate the game more, not less. A must play for anyone who likes difficult games, and I hope the PS5 remake helps more people experience this game.

I would argue it’s a masterpiece on its own. It’s creative, fun, challenging, a pinnacle of game design at the time (and still stands even today), has amazing atmosphere, great combat (better than even DS2), and a great story and cast of characters. This is simply an amazing game. Everything I got frustrated with (1:4 boss run past the dragon I’m looking at you) were never actually unfair, it was just that I didn’t take the time to patiently learn how to make it past that challenge (when I figured out the dragons attack pattern I felt stupid, just run straight). There are elements that are dated seeing as it came out in 2009, but even at that other than the graphics it doesn’t feel dated, it holds up with modern games and is better than most RPGs that have released in the last 10 years. This game is a dated masterpiece without a doubt. Give it a try, but know if you are struggling with an enemy or action sequence, just slow down be patient and learn it. This game is not about babying you and it wants you to take your time. Also pro tip listen to all dialogue, you’ll get a lot more out of this game if you do, there is some great lore and world building. Amazing game!

To me, this is the best game I ever played when taking into consideration it's era, obviously it is not the overall best game today but if you compare this in 2009 to any other game in that game's year of release, I think it comes out on top. The atmosphere and immersion in this game are unmatched until today.

I won't give this a 10 even though I'm tempted to simply to bring the score up with the hope that more people will purchase and support FROM software and Atlus. "Demon's Souls" is a hard game, a fact which you knew before even reading this sentence. People who say it's too hard will slander it and claim that the difficulty is either cheap (Chess Red Eagle) or I won't give this a 10 even though I'm tempted to simply to bring the score up with the hope that more people will purchase and support FROM software and Atlus. "Demon's Souls" is a hard game, a fact which you knew before even reading this sentence. People who say it's too hard will slander it and claim that the difficulty is either cheap (Chess Red Eagle) or pretentious. If the game left the player no respite by having the enemies level up with you, therefore negating any leveling system (ala Final Fantasy VIII) then I would be inclined to agree. "Demon's Souls" rewards a slow, methodical and calculated approach. If you try and take on all of the enemies in the game as though this were "Gears of War", f course you will die and frequently. "Demon's Souls" difficulty allows the game to be immersive. How many games have you played where the storyline has something to do with a legion of enemies that are unstoppable, and yet, the main character can mow them down as though he has a flamethrower and the enemies are toddlers? "Demon's Souls" gets it right. It may be one of the few games of this generation to do so. It's difficult, but allows you to work at your own pace. It doesn't forgive recklessness, but allows you to learn enemy behaviour. If you put in the time and effort into making your character strong enough to complete the game, then it is an accomplishment. You feel satisfied - why? Because the main character wasn't always a hero - you turned him into one - you are the strength that overcame. The graphics are not the best of this generation, but they aren't as bad as "Dragon Age" (a good game, but the graphics are 'meh'). The story isn't in your face - it is quite subtle and the more you look around and take in the atmosphere, the more the story becomes apparent. I could go on and on about how this gem should not be missed for fear of a future where true innovation is ignored. Play this game and don't give up. The more you put into this game, the more it returns. Best game of the year? I believe so. Expand

At any time you can take the souls you earned and return to the Nexus and spend them. The enemies DO respawn when you re-enter the realm, but you've spent your souls so it doesn't matter all that much. You always have the choice of pushing onward, risking the souls earned, vs. returning to cash them in. That's the beauty of the system. I suspect some of the low reviews here aren't used to any REAL risk in their current day gaming adventuring, and this comes as quite a shock. This game isn't for everyone, no doubt. But those looking for a real challenge that demands hard choices with actual consequences, this game is second to none.

Excellent gameplay and a chilling atmosphere work together wonderfully in this game, but the intense difficulty make this best suited for hardcore gamers. The game's greatest failing is its nearly non-existent story, which may come as a surprise to the average JRPG fan. However, fans of serious gameplay and insane difficulty will not be disappointed in this game.

It's surprising, the people whom decry this game as,quote,"difficult, repetitive" or, according to chilimac,:something which will kill you every few minutes(really? You must be very bad at this game sir).

The only ground on which I may criticize this game on is that, indeed, is is not quite an RPG and is in fact more of an Action game, which is FINE.It calls itself an action game anyway, with no particular in-game pretensions of being an epic role-playing adventure in the vein of RPG classics.

Basically, you're playing the role of a person(whom is not yourself, of course) in this game.Ergo, this is a role-playing game.As to what extent this is an RPG, it's certainly more of an RPG in respect to other, if not all, console action games.

Which is all well and fine.Demon's souls might not be an RPG epic that allows you to fully realise yourself in an epic world, but it has a decent and, in fact,'immersive' story which is nothing but helped by the enjoyable(read:just because there're not 100 hotkeys doesn't make it a button-masher,people-_-butyesitisalotsimplerthanmostPC RPGsnowshutup) gameplay and quite excellent artwork.

All in all, this is a, and I stress, great game.Objectively speaking, it has an above-average story, great graphics(which ARE important to some extent in immersion, no offence to D&D), and very fun and, yes, somewhat simple(not to people who die every minute, but to ACTUAL i.e proper RPGs) gameplay.

What's there to cry/moan/give horrible scores about?Any proper critic of this game could not possibly put in down just because there are better RPGs;it has its own strengths and its own individual "style" which does indeed work, and work well.

It is truly refreshing to see a title that doesn't try to compromise itself by introducing easy ways out, destroy it's atmosphere with silly quirks and storyline gaps, or running over the same game mechanics over and over again. The game runs uniquely on the triggers of the PS3 controller, a scheme which works flawlessly and the combat system of Demon's Souls has a depth to it that transcends hack and slash (a fairly poor generalization). The game is unrepentantly fair to players, and the reason for failure is your own inability. Not without its flaws however; the camera is finicky at times, there are some frame rate issues when the scenery gets busy, and the story isn't incredibly present or original (it is delightfully filled in if you look for it however). And you know what? It's not that bad. It's not as hard as people are saying it is. It's definitely not for casual gamers or newcomers to Role-Playing games but I've been playing RPGs for a while now and I've beaten difficult games such as Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 and Devil Mat Cry 3, so I'm used to these kinds of games. The challenge, the environment and the combat is what keeps me coming back. It's not unforgiving hard either. It's just strict. That's good, because it forces you to stay attentive and in turn, keeps you interested. I will admit that the music isn't up to par with music from other role playing games, such as Fable, Fallout or Final Fantasy and the voice acting is humerously bizarre. But that didn't bother me too much. I was so into the game to even care. The game reminds me of Lord of the Rings all the time and the environments and concept remind of Legend of Zelda. The only other downside is that the game doens't tell you which region to explore next after you beat a boss. Overall, I give Demon's Souls a 9 on 10 and recommend it as a game to buy. Let it out first : this game is awesome........ if you take the time to play it like it should be and if you change your gamer reflexes gained from God of War and other smashers...
Graphics : really good, not the best on PS3 but really enticing, especially if you want some western fantasy world (something we kind of miss since Oblivion, and Dragon Age didn't have enough originality in the art design)
Sounds : really good too (go to The Tower level, those Octomagus with bells will creep you out of your mind), maybe some more epic music would have been nice at some key moments
Gameplay : totally incredible... it's a hardcore game, so be prepared, that means you CANNOT go in, smash everybody and get out of the level after 15 minutes. You have to be patient, to slowly understand what you have to do, what should be the best way to pass this or that monster. But when you do, it's so rewarding you can't stop yourself to go on. It can be really frustrating at time, but only because it asks you to get better. You cannot play the whole game smashing the same button. You have to develop tactics, to understand what your character's can or cannot do. But the game is never unfair. When you die (and you die often) you know it's because you aren't good enough for this monster. You go to another level you couldn't pass before and you see your level is sufficient now.... and so on. Really rewarding but, as I said before, you must adapt to the way you must play it.
Controls : absolutely no problem, smooth, precise, you'll never die because of them, only because of your own failure :)
Online : mind-blowing! Yeah, a single-player RPG has a great online experience, let me explain how : when you are alive, you can call other players (that you don't know) in the form of blue ghosts to help you in a certain level. If you manage to kill the boss of that level, the ghost player will be resurrected in his own game. If you're dead, you can leave a message on the floor saying you're free to be summoned as a ghost by another player. Or you can invade another player's world as a Red Ghost to try and kill him, which will revive you too. Pure Genius. When you understand how it works, you really have a lot of fun with that system.
Longevity : the game itself is long enough (it took me like 1,5 week to finish it, and playing it quite a lot each day), and you clearly want to play it again to see the (many) things you missed the first time you played it. So good points here too.
Fun (because games are all about fun) : it will depend on your definition of fun in games. If difficulty really freaks you down, don't come near that game. But if beating some great challenges and getting really rewarded each time is your thing, don't hesitate one second.

A fantastic game capable of capturing the middle age's atmosphere like none other. It is brutal and it has its shortcomings (bad camera, a few cheap deaths) but it's overall a great experience, thanks also to an innovative and smart on line gaming system. A must have.

It seems everyone expects to carry over last games skills into the next and that new games are only new raw meat cinematics. Demon's souls has broken free of the dime a dozen philosophy and offers a very fun and rewarding game with a high level of customization. The game is not difficult it's only perceived this way because players now a days are so immersed in clones of games they have lost the ability to think for themselves in anything unique without the same controls and guns ect as everything else on the market. You will really enjoy this game if you give it some pause and player discretion. Once you have settled in and used your mind a bit this game far exceeds any other title on the market online or offline. There are only two small complaints i have about the title. The first is you can only carry so much equipment but wear only two rings and magic targeting could be improved a little. Any complaints that the game is broken or too tough speaks more about the player than the game. Expand

Every action has a heavy, realistic feel to it, so your sword swings and shield blocks will have lifelike responses. These ground breaking controls are complemented with beautiful visuals, stunning level design and extremely creative boss battles. For instance, one of the early levels will have you running through a castle timing your runs with the intervals of a dragon swooping down and breathing fire over your path. Scenes like this are so grandiose and epic in scale and really immerse you in this fantasy genre. The most crippling flaw of Demon's Soul is a lack of a compelling story. This game is truly gameplay oriented, meaning you will be going from level to level without really feeling like you've accomplished much for any characters or made a significant progression throughout a long winding engaging story, unlike games like Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls. But Demon's Soul is a game you definitely need to experience to fall in love with. It is a game of absolutely monumental scale and you really deserve to see it for yourself. Expand

It is not like a typical hack & slash where you can get away with pressing "X" 40 to 50 times and walk away from a fight in the game untouched. You can customize your character as much as you like and you have access to over 50 pieces of weapons and armor. I played Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 first and this game is way better in many ways. Level design and gloomy feel as well. Only thing is the difficulty is brutal for these games so you really need to use the mega mule to even make it thru the game. Otherwise it will be impossible to play for long. Great RPG on par even in 2017 to newer games. I like this along with the Souls games and Skyrim.

Great game. Brutally difficult (old school), so if you get frustrated and give up easily you might want to harden up or look elsewhere. Stick with it though and you'll be rewarded.
Is definitely an action rpg (and more action than rpg) so don't expect story lines and NPCs to farm quests off.
What it does it does brilliantly.
Better value for your money than FFXIII.

Not for the feint of heart. This game will challenge you, punish you, and overall just make you it's **** That said, playing and beating this game was probably my greatest videogame moment of late. The best way for me to describe this game is basically Zelda for adults. So if you like hack-n-slash, exploration, and a good challenge you will have a great time playing demon's souls.

Demon's Souls is not for everyone. It is only for those who are undoubtedly determined to finish a game. From the tutorial alone, you're supposed to realize that. This is not a casual game. It needs your utmost attention and effort. If you can give it that, this game will be one of the most enjoyable games you've played on your PS3. First of all, this game is not hard. At least, not yet. It gets harder when you beat it. Why? Why do you want to play a game you've already beaten? It has to challenge you again and keep up with you or else you'll lose interest. If you find this game too hard, seek another game you have interest in. Simple. Second, this game's story is subtle. Not good, not bad, just subtle. Since the game is closer to an MMORPG, that is probably to be expected. (The "Character Creation" and "Classes" should be the best hint for that so don't expect an extraordinary award-winning tale.) However, the characters are at least interesting and the graphics are superb. Third, your death is your fault. The worlds are in a state of terrible chaos and evil. But this time, its true to its word. So don't think that you'll survive if you're not cautious. Just be extra, extra, extra careful. Don't run unless you need to. Keep your shield up and be prepared for anything. The only thing that most people would probably agree on (including me) is how unfair the punishment of death is. Okay, you died. Its alright to start at the beginning of the stage. But having to kill all of the same creatures again without the guarantee that you can actually make it back to your Bloodstain is overkill. If only your souls weren't on the line this would be acceptable. Sadly, it is not. So spend them immediately and efficiently. Demon's Souls is not a perfect game. But its purpose is clear. The world is conquered by evil. We need to stop it. So get your gear ready and kick some ass. You were meant to save the world. You just need to prove it. Expand

Also, the graphics feel a bit dated even for a game from 2009, and at times the performance bogs down to a stuttering frame rate in certain areas where draw distance is further out with a lot of visuals being rendered on screen.

It's the story of your journey, your failures, your successes, and any information regarding over arching world events are only relevant as far as your point of view allows, because my story will be different than yours, which will be different from others, just as uniquely.

This game hits the emotional spectrum on every level...devastation, frustration, enlightment, satisfaction, elation.
It doesn't achieve that by being "too hard" or "un-fair".
The game is perfectly fair, and yes, very challenging, but that's what makes it so great.
If you die, it was because you weren't good enough, and yes, that is your fault, and yes there are penalties.
The pay-off is, if you succeed, it is entirely because of your skill..you aren't going to button mash to victory here, or luck your way through a boss fight.
That type of satisfaction is rare in gaming today where you fully expect to beat the game, no matter your skill level...a fact that is not at all guaranteed in this game.

If you are looking for a more casual experience, this game probably isn't going to be your cup of tea.
The good news is, that most games on the market will cater to you, and despite some sneering in some of these reviews, there is nothing wrong with that.

Most game experiences are like winning a million bucks in the lottery.
Demon's Souls is like working hard, through highs and lows to become a millionaire.
Both of those are awesome, though the satisfaction you will receive from the second method is far beyond the first...but you'll have to put in the effort.

If you just want to blaze through like a bad-ass with little chance of failure, don't try this game.
If you want a prolonged struggle with a game that's going to make you grab it by the throat and force it to it's knees..try it out!

At a time in the gaming industry when so many games hold your hand throughout the whole experience with little to no risk involved, games like Demon's Souls are a breath of fresh air. I have to give the devs a lot of credit here for really nailing the difficulty curve to make it as hard as it can be without making it impossible or feel like you died because of stupid game design. This game just isn't that frustrating to me compared to other difficult games because it's so well done. I'm no beginner when it comes to difficult games. My favorites include the Prinny series, and old school games like Kid Icarus that were just brutal at the time, but part of that was some pretty irritating mechanics like simple jumping or not seeing what is coming. This is probably the first time I felt like every death was entirely dependent on my skill instead of dying to bad mechanics or stupid game design decisions. My character controlled exactly as I needed him to, but never took over for me when I made a mistake nor saved me from death when I deserved it.

Every single death was productive in helping me get better at the game. It took me a ridiculous amount of hours just to beat the first level, but it was really really fun. It got to the point that every obstacle I overcame was laughably easy going through it the 100th time making the deaths feel much less daunting getting back to where I died last so I could at least recover dropped souls (like a currency from killing something). It's the kind of design that reinforced the feeling that you're always making progress, and that nothing is all that difficult if you give it time and patience.

So to sum it all up, I think it's an incredible game in every way, unless the player prefers games with no death penalty and obstacles that are so easy you can go through entire levels in one try. if you like action RPGs, a little old-school difficulty, and great presentation, you gotta try this game!

On one side, it's possibly the most unforgiving and vague of Miyazaki's games, but on the other - having experienced Dark Souls first - it's pretty easy, at least as far as Soulsborne games go. It's certainly rough around the edges, but it more than makes up for it with its challenging gameplay, dense worlds, and thick atmosphere. The MIDI-based soundtrack is so full of character - may just be my favorite of any From Software game, even if it's kind of goofy sometimes. I sincerely hope BluePoint's remake features an option to have the original soundtrack. The Nexus a wonder to explore - and that's just the hub world... though finding the Monumental took forever my first go around.

There are some key aspects to the gameplay which aren't explained very well - World Tendency being one of the big ones - but it never hindered my experience. Ladder climbing speed was a bit annoying - especially in the Shrine of Storms world. I was also annoyed by the fact that, depending on where your character is positioned in the world, dying or loading out of the game sometimes sent me an entire checkpoint behind my most recent checkpoint upon reloading. This meant I would have to warp to the Nexus and then warp back to the proper checkpoint. Hopefully the remake addresses this - and includes the ability to warp between checkpoints instead of having to go back to the Nexus first. Apparently PVP was a nightmare, as well, but I never had the chance to experience it. I did get to dabble briefly with co-op, though, and had no issues there.

Despite it's flaws, it's a masterpiece that I highly recommend everyone at least try. Looking forward to the PS5 remake.

You truly feel in control of your character, and must very intently involve yourself in the combat. If you are killed, it is because you were not paying attention, or simply got too excited, or maybe your gear is not up to par. No need for a story here. You are given a glimpse of what the story is about but even that quickly fades away as you create your own story while you battle monsters and demons in a far away place.
