    I had a blast with this game. I did not expect the game to be what it is. I thought going into it based on the cover it was going to be a bit indecent but the story is deeper than that.

    otro juego que acabo de adquirir y pasar este 2021, sin duda lo recomiendo mucho. el protagonista me recuerda mucho a un exnovio que tuve, lo que me parecio aun mas divertido jaja.

    Fun, interesting, and amazing replay value. If you can’t stomach hard puzzles leave now, but otherwise this is totally worth it.

    I am writing this review after Catherine received a PS4 port. The original game is superior in my opinion. It was revolutionary for its time in terms of blending mature storytelling with unconventional puzzle gameplay. The other aspect the game excelled at was its characters and artstyle, all of which have been masterfully crafted to fit in place to deliver a very unique gameplay and storyI am writing this review after Catherine received a PS4 port. The original game is superior in my opinion. It was revolutionary for its time in terms of blending mature storytelling with unconventional puzzle gameplay. The other aspect the game excelled at was its characters and artstyle, all of which have been masterfully crafted to fit in place to deliver a very unique gameplay and story experience. I suggest to anyone trying out Catherine for the first time to go with the original PS3 version of the game.… Expand

    This is one of my favorite Atlus games, hands down. The plot is mature and not in a gory/sexy way, but as a story about being an adult and genuinely adult problems such as marriage and commitment.     The gameplay is also great. It is a straightforward puzzle about climbing a blocktower by moving blocks to make a path to the top, like a reverse 3D tetris in a 3D. I'm glad they didn't opt for something more done like another bejeweled clone or some generic platformer. I laugh at all the bad scores from people who are only giving it a bad score because it was hard. It is hard, but it is an M rated game with adult themes, this isn't meant to be an easy little kid game!

    The music is also stellar with both original tracks and remixes of classical music from artists like Beethoven and Chopin.

    This is also a game where ever single choice you make feels like it really matters. Every one. I am sick to death of games giving the players dialog choice but they don't actually do anything.

    Even if you find the block puzzles aren't your thing, you must admit it is a unique game that has real effort put into it.    … Expand

    puzzles don't change so when u learn one way to up, it's done, there's no fun and challenge anymore. and the day part was so limit and people leave fast u can't talk to all of them or interact with them.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I couldn't find any flaws with this game. It is really fun. The title screen alone is mystical! It's a Golden Show is one of the best tracks for a title screen. It is beautiful. So is the the goddess who introduces us to the game Catherine from the Golden Playhouse. I would go through the hell that is the Babel levels to get her ending. She is beautiful. The mechanics are really fun. The climbing aspect and the narrative flow together incredibly well. There isn't a time where I felt the game was cheating me. Maybe with some of the boss fights, but it still had solid mechanics. The fun of not using the items the game offered was really fun and added an extra layer of challenge. They were helpful, but lowered my rank if I used them. i got Katherine ending, this is much easier in writing, and I was happy with it. I started doing the Catherine playthrough and I didn't feel like the game was having narrative errors with motivations or character progression. it felt coherent and emotional whichever path I went down. The music can't be understated because the player will hear it at all times due to the heavy cinematic scenes or the long gameplay sections. It was truly like climbing out of hell. This game does a better job of illustrating mental health than Celeste. it is such an oddity, but Atlus does good work. I am excited for the Full Body remaster/remake. It is worth every second of your time, and subsequent playthroughs keep you coming back for more and new narrative.… Expand

    Story:
    Catherine is a thriller mystery story that discusses the issues of relationships and commitment. You play as Vincent, a man thrown into a scenario between his long relationship with his girlfriend, Katherine, and the woman of his dreams that he is cheating with, Catherine. Along with this, Vincent as well as other cheaters are having nightmares that would kill them if they die in the dream. The game totes multiple endings depending on how you profile Vincent's personality. You do not make any real decisions in the game, but you influence Vincents moral and emotional state to an extent. Vincent, the (K)Catherines, and the rest of the side characters are well voiced and the writing does engage you into the characters, their situations, and the overall philosophies of the game. It can be silly at times, but that is part of the story's charm.

    Gameplay:
    There are two elements of gameplay in Catherine, tower climbing and communication zones.

    The tower climbing is the center of the gameplay. This all takes place in the dream sequences of the game. The objective is to move blocks and create paths to the top of the tower. The rules vary based on the different blocks, items, and enemies you encounter. While there are a few times that the controles feel sensitive at times, Vincents movement in the game are sharp and rarely does the game feel unfair. There are s plenty of opportunities and enemy tales to help you reach the goal. This is by no means an easy game, there is plenty of challenge and you will likely die quite a few times before you catch on the logic of a specific tower. These sequences can also feature unique and fun bosses that challenge and pursue you as you attempt to escape. Overall, the gameplay for the tower climbing is an arcade game in all the right ways.

    The other gameplay element took place in the communication zones. These zones was more permit you to interact with the story characters and make choices that will define Vincents personality, the people around him, and the final moments of the game. They are in essence as a hub (similar to your time on the Normandy is Mass Effect) to interact with NPCs. It's basic, but it serves well in building the story.

    Visuals and Sound:
    While the animation sequences look great, the 3D models are more basic, but it does not take away from the atmosphere. The visuals, blended with fantastic music, makes the game stand out.

    Lack of a Bridge:

    The games story and arcade gameplay makes Catherine a fun and thoughtful ride. However, the dream being the bridge between the story and gameplay is a stretch. Given the games deep story, the arcade gameplay of climbing a tower to reach a goal is a bit simplistic. Atlus could have added different puzzle and environmental elements to really emphasize the psychological thrill of the story.

    Conclusion:
    Even though Catherine did not fully succeed in bridging the contrast between the story and gameplay, the game shows high quality in both of those elements. If you love puzzles and arcade style games, this cult classic is a game worth playing.    … Expand

    I must admit, this si my favorite game of all time. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would love a puzzle game so much. From the music, to the story, the gameplay, everything about this game is perfection. I honestly got emotional near the end, and it truly had me on the edge of my seat the whole game. I know that is such a cliche, but it's totally true in this beautifulI must admit, this si my favorite game of all time. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would love a puzzle game so much. From the music, to the story, the gameplay, everything about this game is perfection. I honestly got emotional near the end, and it truly had me on the edge of my seat the whole game. I know that is such a cliche, but it's totally true in this beautiful romance thriller. But it works so, so well. The gameplay is tight, frantic, clever, and absolutely ass-kicking (in that it'll kick your ass), the narrative isFew games can claim to be as dedicated to an artistic vision as Catherine. An anime-influenced hardcore horror-puzzle-platformer about a 32-year-old man running away from nightmare-induced manifestations of adult responsibility is a bizarre concept. But it works so, so well. The gameplay is tight, frantic, clever, and absolutely ass-kicking (in that it'll kick your ass), the narrative is wrought with symbolism and themes grounded firmly in reality sure to be relatable to the target demographic, the cut-scenes are stellar, there are multiple endings to inspire replays of the campaign (not to mention the top score trophies you'll want to acquire), and the extra brutal Babel for the truly masochistic, tons of Rapunzel arcade levels, and couch co-op where sabotage is the name of the game.     Incredibly fun and addicting, Story was ok as again this is a japanese kind of approach to their stories with an anime touch. One of the best games i played in 2017. Late but worth it

    Just beat the game and to be honest I have mixed feelings about it. The art style and storytelling is great. it really pulled in from the start. The gameplay is very addictive too but that can be a bad thing. I got so angry towards the end but couldn't stop playing. I haven't been so annoyed by a game in a long time. Around the 6th stage the difficulty really shot up. If you love puzzleJust beat the game and to be honest I have mixed feelings about it. The art style and storytelling is great. it really pulled in from the start. The gameplay is very addictive too but that can be a bad thing. I got so angry towards the end but couldn't stop playing. I haven't been so annoyed by a game in a long time. Around the 6th stage the difficulty really shot up. If you love puzzle games or just feel like trying something different then this is definitely worth checking out. Hopefully you're more patient than I am though..     One of the best PS3 games on my library. I own all kind of merchandise from Catherine. Lovely world, excellent waifu. Good drinks and the puzzles damn! Play it on Very Hard and you'll dream about cubes and classical music. I don't know if the games has any problem so far. I think is a classic I replayed at least one or two times a year since 2011.

Which is why Catherine takes a special place in my heart. To me, it is the only videogame which has 100% delivered on all the various things it has promised.

    Catherine is all about Vincent, a bum who's tied down by his girlfriend Katherine. Katherine is pressuring Vincent to marry her but he is scared to commit. Around this time the sexy, cheerful Catherine appears to Vincent, and after a one-night stand, he finds himself having to choose between the two very different women. Choose Katherine and he's committing himself to shackles for a lifetime. Choose Catherine and he's debasing himself and abandoning true love for a life of sex and selfishness. BUT! Each night Vincent is forced to climb a deadly tower each night until he gains "True Freedom", whatever that may mean. If he falls off the tower in his dreams, he dies in real life, and there's been a string of such murders recently. The story and character development is brilliant, with everyone getting a good look-in and Vincent's resolve changing to the tune of the 8 different endings you can get, which are all satisfying and reflect the player's own opinion regarding the topic of relationships.

    It's a very interesting story and setting, standing as a criticism of the traditional heterosexual hunter-gatherer relationship, and the social pressure to commit to the perhaps-unrealistic dream of a happy-ever-after world. Yet on the other hand, it is also criticises the increased liberalism of modern society that has normalised sex-first relationships and led to people perceiving romantic partners as more disposable. Catherine is predominantly about heterosexual relationships, and I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that there's potential in a sequel or spinoff depicting homosexual relationships, but there are dynamic differences that would best be depicted in their own story rather than potentially being relegated to a subplot/thrown into the main plot at the risk of causing it to lose focus. That, and anime is notorious for stereotyping gay characters (though things are improving, they weren't really there back in 2011),so it's best that writers stick with what they know.

    The gameplay is very clearly split between reality and dreams. During the day, you watch the story progress as Vincent hangs out with his fellow down-out-of-luck friends at The Stray Sheep. Naturally many of its customers are men who are lost in love and don't know what to do (though there are some women thrown in). You can sit down with these NPCs and chat, and discover more about their life and their thoughts on cheating, commitment and such.

    At nighttime it all changes. To climb up that tower I mentioned, Vincent must push and pull blocks to he can climb up said tower. If you've played Pullblox on 3DS, it's like that but on acid (though Catherine came out before Pullblox). The gameplay is oddly hypnotic and very difficult, but it is very rewarding and a solution is always there. The levels are impeccably designed. Hats off to the boss stages, which contain bosses that represent Vincent's inner fears of the real world. They're insanely creepy and have interesting designs. You literally get chased by a vagina at one point early on! Also, remember those NPCs? They appear in this shared dream that you have, each talking about things they are more reluctant to share when in the bar. Talk to your favourite NPCs often or they might die like the others on the news!

    The sountrack is decent. I don't hate any of it really. There's a few standouts, including some nice riffs on old classical tunes.

    Catherine hit me like no other game has. The reason for this is hard to explain, but when you get it is's so easy to understand. In spite of all of it's insane quirkiness and supernatural elements, Catherine manages to be an intensely relatable game which discusses the important issues of conservative and liberal approaches to love and sex. There will be no game like Catherine, a game that is so proud and bold in its depiction of sex and lust , but so thoughtful in how it does so. It's one of the few reasons i got a PS3 and for the bargain that was £1.49 on sale, I cannot be happier. No game better represents Atlus as a creative force.    … Expand

    Pero dejando eso de lado, es un agrado encontrar una historia hecha para gente grande, y que además te da una libertad de lo suficientemente ancha como para que la historia del protagonista cuente con un final acorde a lo que uno piense. La historia trata temas que tocan a muchas relaciones de pareja, y que pueden llevar a que uno de los dos miembros cometa una infidelidad. El mundo del juego cuenta con "algo de magia", así que depende de tí que eso se pueda arreglar o no... Si es que quieres arreglarlo, claro está.

    Quizás el gran pero para muchos son lus puzzles, los cuales uno debe pasar para avanzar en la historia. Yo lo terminé en nivel medio, y sufrí mucho para poder progresar. A lo mejor es conveniente empezar en nivel fácil para poder disfrutar mejor de la historia, y de paso adaptarse al juego. Aún así, si eres de ellos que disfrutó de juegos como Portal, esto debiese incentivarte a jugar Catherine más que asustarte.

    De ahí que le pongo 9/10. Tampoco es un juego que redefina el planeta videojuego como lo sí lo hicieron Final Fantasy VII o Zelda Ocarina of Time, pero es un juego sólido y por el que vale la pena gastar minutos de nuestro tiempo en él.    … Expand

    Probably one of my favorite all time games. The Story was amazing, had me hooked. The game is far more focused on the story then it is on the actual gameplay but for what the gameplay was, it's pretty incredible. For anyone looking to get this game it's an amazing experience.

I spent about twice the time it would take another gamer to complete Catherine. I probably bashed my head a few times trying to beat the game but it matters not as I felt truly rewarded in the end. The storyline was actually very interesting, not as cheesy as I imaginedOhhh what can I say about this game. It is hard, relentless even and makes me feel like I'm stupid most of the time. I spent about twice the time it would take another gamer to complete Catherine. I probably bashed my head a few times trying to beat the game but it matters not as I felt truly rewarded in the end.     while it may contain some scenes where one character is not dressed as much, no nudity is shown. GTA has much more adult elements than this game, the game doesnt even have a sex scene. The witcher has much much much more "adult themes" than this game.

    As a casual anime fan, I really loved the look and story behind this game. I normally just skip though cutscenes and don't pay attention to the plot, but the story is (half of) what this is all about. The puzzle sections pretty much nail the balance between fun and frustrating (i.e. tough, but not off-putting). Shame about those bells ringing constantly when you've nearly completed a level!

The cut-scenes are well-done and give the game character and depth. They’re full anime and are very dramatic and entertaining, you will definitely be left wishing there was a Catherine anime show when it’s all said and done.

    The pacing is very well done in Catherine. Most time is spent climbing block puzzles, but there are also other game play elements such as being able to hang out at the local bar called “The Stray Sheep” with friends. The game play itself is fantastic. The block puzzles are truly entertaining and extremely thought provoking and difficult, even on the easiest difficulty. You will learn block climbing techniques from the other sheep you encounter in the strange “world” in Vincent’s dreams. You will never grow tired of playing Catherine. Each puzzle is different, always changing from level to level. Some blocks may have spikes, some may crumble and others may be springboards to reach higher blocks. It’s a blast to play through these levels, but beware, some can be very difficult and players may become frustrated, but it’s all worth it in the end.

    The music in Catherine is beautiful. A soundtrack even comes with new copies of the game. It’s all high quality instrumentals with violins, pianos and more. The music really sets the tone for each stage in the game, giving it a sense of individuality. The voice acting is all well-done, from the most insignificant characters such as bar-goers to Vincent and Catherine.

    Overall, Catherine is a rousing success. It cements its name in gaming history for being a truly unique, one of a kind experience. All gamers should pick it up, regardless of genre preference. Catherine boasts a fantastic story, great pacing, top-notch voice acting, spectacular game play and solid replay value. The main downfall of the game is that it is linear and one dimensional. However, it’s still worth every penny of the $59.99 price tag. Give it a purchase, you will not be disappointed. Catherine is a diamond in a pool of substandard, mediocre shooters flooding the shelves of retail stores.    … Expand

All of a sudden, though,    I wanted to go back and write a review on one of my favorite PS3 games -- Catherine. This is a true puzzle game, one that relies on your ability to think both critically, and (as the game progresses) more and more quickly.
    The plot is fresh and well developed. You are a young programmer on the cusp of taking the "next step" with longtime girlfriend Katherine. All of a sudden, though, a young beauty interrupts your stable life. Her name? Catherine. The resulting conundrum forces the protagonist into a kind of metaphorical dream-scape, in which he must make his way to the tippy top of a series of towers, all by using blocks that he can push, turn and cilmb. As he makes his way through this trippy reality, filled with monstrous re-imaginings of life's key decisions (one boss is a gigantic, hideous baby,) he's forced to make decisions that will ultimately decide the outcome of his life. The game asks the player a series of questions, and by the game's end, you may end up with Katherine, Catherine, or, perhaps, you'll be doomed to live in this dream world forever...
    As far as game-play goes, Ezra Pound (who famously said to writers "make it new,") would be proud. Lots of games come out well polished with fun gameplay, but ninety nine percent of them feel like some kind of iteration of a different game. (Madden 2016 feels like 2015, MGSV feels like MGS1V, and every FPS ever feels like Unreal Tournament.) Catherine is a completely new experience, yet somehow also feels very polished, as if it's the third or fourth sequel in a series. Giant block puzzles need to be climbed quickly, because as you ascend you'll notice the ground beneath you begins to fall into blackness. If you don't want to fall with them, you'll need to think on your feet. As you progress the blocks fall faster, the puzzles get more complicated, and "trick" blocks will make things even harder (some blocks are covered in ice which you will slide right over, others have spikes that shoot out and kill you. Some explode.) These trick blocks need to be both avoided and used to your advantage, and the game does a fantastic job of providing puzzles which test the limits of your critical thinking and your imagination. Bosses are a blast as well. They're both visually interesting and more challenging, as they will sometimes hurl things at you to knock you off the climb.
    Overall this game merges a frame narrative RPG with a true puzzle experience. For smart gamers, this one should be on your shelf. .    … Expand

    I didn´t play a game as strange like Catherine. But strange in a good sense. Atlus has one impresive talent for this type of mature stories and like Persona 4, this game have a rare but very interesting and dark story about person´s relations.

The puzzles are challenging but are intuitive (once you understand how the blocks can and can't connect) and by the end of the game, 2 or 3 techniques is all you need to beat the game.

    Perhaps the best part of game is the story and the decision making process that the protagonist must go through. What is portrayed as the generic "good choice vs bad choice" dynamic quickly turns out to be something a little different. The questions are not the clear cut obvious right answer and obvious wrong answer. Some of the questions make you think and the game, using online data gathered from other gamers, lets you know how other people have answered the same questions. The way the questions are answered, combined with other decision making within the game, lead you to one of many endings, some of them wholesome and conclusive and others bordering on the ridiculous.

    Overall, Catherine is a great game with a lot of unique elements and a great story filled with metaphors, allusions, trivia, and dilemmas.

    Good for: Puzzle gamers, anime fans, fans of story driven games, fans of philosophy, fans of psychology and fans of sociology.

I beat the game on Normal difficulty, with dozens of 'retry' collectibles left over, after doubting I would even make it through the game. So it's possible, and in the end I had a good time with the inventive challenge. I enjoyed the story (over 1 hour of cutscenes/dialogue) and appreciated how the game built upon itself, slowly expanding with new block types and increasingly surprising boss fights. An unlockable challenge mode with leaderboards seals the deal. Even after you've played the campaign, there'll be something to come back for if you enjoyed the game, apart from the multiple endings. It's also one of the rare PS3 games with local multiplayer. So it's a full package, and if you like the basic premise, you gotta admit they did a spectacular job in fleshing the gameplay-focused idea out into a comprehensive game. The uniqueness deserves a 9/10, but then again, the whole game has you climbing UP, and it's easy to come up with variations they could have included. How about a level where you climb downwards, or where the undo-button is used in some clever way, or just a rule-change in some way. The ideas included are so inventive, but they mostly deal with block properties, and not expansion of the premise. If the game had been more fundamentally varied, it might have been one of my rare 9/10s.… Expand

    The game is odd, in a good way, in that if feels like two games in one. One game is intense puzzle plat forming, while the other is a relaxing conversation simulator. As you play you switch between the two which makes for some brilliant pacing. Without the story and the knowledge I could relax following an intense brain exploding puzzle, I would have easily quit early in the game.

    The story, while relaxing, tackles some controversial social ethics that will probably affect players in different ways. For me, the game made me look internally and reflect on what type of person I am. This in turn made me feel guilty as I knew I was guiding the character into doing the wrong things but could not bring myself to stop.

    My biggest gripes are that the controls are a bit awkward which make for frustrating moments, and a few of the endings feel incomplete. These are the endings you get if you are indecisive throughout the games trials.

    Catherine is a unique game, and is unlike anything I have played before. The difficult puzzles were always worth it because of the victory I felt when completing them. Sometimes I would jump off the couch with a victory yell. (My wife didn’t appreciate this). In the end, I am happy to have had the opportunity to experience the game.    … Expand

    Story starts of with a guy called Vincet and his life and his girlfriend, whose name is Katherine, and well he meets a seductive woman in bar called Catherine and he cheates on Katherine and well you will fall into story as it goes it turn very attracting and interesting that i dont want to spoil anymore ...
    gameplay is being devided to two sides, just like Persona series, one in real world as you go around and interact with other characters and one in Vincent's dream where you end up in an interesting puzzle, you have to climb up a tower which is made of different cubes, there are many traps along the way and you have to open you way by moving cubes along to top of the tower, as you get closer to the end of the game these puzzle start to become SURPRISINGLY DIFFICULT that may be frustrating.
    But what satisfies the gamer most is the adult oriented story, its about relationships and so on, which other games doest pay attention to it that much other than other ATLUS games ...
    graphically and artistically catherine has much to show off, beautoful colors in the world and nicely drawn and developed characters and so on.
    I picked up the Collection edition at the first day, it was kind of a weird CE since it gives u a pervert feeling with having boxer, sexy pillowcase and catherine shirt in it WTF !

A few minor complaints. the biggest being that the level music is too heavy, and the loops are too short. While it is actually really well produced video game music...it gets really repetitive. Also the controls can be a little finicky if you move to fast, and a few of the later levels are kinda half-assed, but then they pick up again. No deal breakers

I love both the puzzle aspect and the story. Never could you imagine how well designed were the puzzles that is just screwing with your brain for hours on end. Having alternate endings were nice, but still only the Catherine ending is the truly awesome one. Perhaps the only thing keeping it from a 10 from me is the camera, a few occations camera and walking around boxes don't quite go well together, can't see yourself or what you are really doing. Overall loved the game, buy it only if you like puzzles and enjoy an awesome story, rent and play on easy if you want to watch like an hour kick ass story.… Expand

It's got a beautiful anime vibe style to it's graphics, that brings the whole thing to life. It's also very challenging, requiring you to change up you climbing tactics several times per level, and has pulse racing boss battles. It also has co-op and competitive modes you can play with a friend, and a solo challenge tower mode. When I'm not playing it I'm thinking about it, and I can't wait to see all the different endings. I recommend this deeply moving and thought provoking puzzle game to any and all gamers who are old enough to handle the mature subject matter, and the challenge it offers.… Expand

    One of my favorite games this generation and of all time. This game is a great original title. The game's story is unique and the puzzling action is awesome! Very challenging and you feel so great when you accomplish the missions. Also the versus mode is a lot of fun with a friend!

Soon additions like spiked blocks ,sheep that push you or block your route add even more to the difficulty and general madness of the overall game. Each completion of a set of 3 block levels allows you too the other area of the main game the story. which are interactive animations with conversations and speech choices that change some scenes and affect youre final ending. this part of the game is also very high quality the story is quite adult in its content and very amusing in places. if you have played any of the persona series you may recognise the style and use of various things like the use of tv channels to tell the story. There are 2 variations of the puzzle game, a retro version arcade cabinet in the Bar called Rapunzel, and a challenge area called Babel, which unlocks if you manage a gold rank in the main games challenges. there is an online question and answer dialogue that after you answer the question tells you what other players first time answers where. The only bad point of the game is the slightly loose control scheme in the block game as youre man sometimes goes the wrong way or grabs the wrong block but this is slight and does not spoil the game at all.     Just finished the game. Catherine is a unique puzzle game, one that has a potentially great story, and fun gameplay. The story is just hampered by occasional cheese voice acting/dialogue, but it is still good for a video game. I did not appreciate the twist at the end, and the ending I got was pretty boring. The art style and graphics I found were excellent. Overall a solid game!

    The story is well though out and compelling. The twists are incredibly unexpected and keep you on your toes. This is all assisted by the exceptional voice acting, that made me genuinely care about each character. My only complaint is how little control you have, though you're guaranteed so much. They involve a block pushing, pulling climbing sequence that has you trying to reach the top of a tower of blocks before some odd mental representation of a life crisis catches up with you. Make no mistake, the puzzle sequences are VERY challenging. I found myself setting the game to easy to make it a bit more enjoyable and I suspect many other will or have done the same.     The best game i played all year with a deep and compelling story line hard as nails difficulty and a very fun puzzle sequences. Going away from the usual formula of games that are released every other week. Catherine offers something new, fresh and warped. BUY IT!!!

Cathrine is a puzzle game for the most part with the story revolving around your choices of eather sticking to the girl you've spent years with and wants to move your relationship to the next level or going for the other girl who is more of a free spirite . i found the story intresting although i wish i had more choices in what i could say in conversations to give me more of a feel like i was choosing my path more. the story is deffinitly more on par for the older gamer and id say even older then 18 more like mid 20s or older . who can probubly relate more to whats going on . the puzzle part of the game is kind of fun and engauging putting alot of thinking into your next move . it is also kind of hard later on in the game you have very little time to think on your next move and the game can be frustrating . it would have been nice if they varied up some differnt kind of puzzles besides climbing a block tower and there was more of a free roam aspect to the game letting you do more but i knew what i was getting from the demo and dropped my $60 to support a game that ultimatley deserves it . Catherine may not be perfect but it is fun and it is new and its worth a purchase if thats what you want in your gaming and are tired of all the same old crap.… Expand

    Despite all of the dread and complaints about Catherine's difficulty, I found that it fell perfectly into the challenge level that I expect from a good puzzler. That's actually one thing I greatly appreciated about Catherine's pacing, too; the constant addition of new block types, variation between boss patterns, and a shifting of theme and environment with each tier of the tower all keep the game fresh through its 10 to 15 hours. While it may take significantly less time for some gamers to breeze through the story mode, making complete use of social elements, playing the Rapunzel meta game, and talking to all of the sheep on the landing areas will lengthen the experience. The game also has eight possible endings (though it would not be necessary to beat it eight times to see all of the possibilities), contains unlockable local multiplayer, and provides puzzle variants through the randomized Babel stages. Co-op is a blast with someone of [at least] moderate intelligence. I also think it's worth noting that the storyline is remarkable, albeit a bit silly with one or two of its many twists. The voice acting is good, at least up to par with other Shin Megami Tensei and Persona titles, and the influence of personal choice can be felt in the branching cinematics. I was pleasantly surprised to see many Persona elements carry over to Catherine, as your interaction with the patrons of the Stray Sheep bar and the nightmare victims can alter the story in subtle ways, giving Catherine a more customized feeling than one might expect. In short, this is a tremendously satisfying game that works on every level of its action-puzzle-horror-sim mashup, and if you're looking for a more unique and mature addition to your stale 7th generation game library, Catherine will definitely fit the bill. Just be ready to die a lot until you get the hang of things. Easily one of my favorites from the past year. Now, on to El Shaddai...… Expand

    Atlus is amazing, Team Persona is the same. Catherine is an unique addictive puzzle game with a mature history told very well. If You like in general a nice story with amazing characters YOU HAVE TO BUY IT.

NOTE: This game is definitely not for everyone and when it says it's mature it's not lying, and like another reviewer said, not just in content but in context, the conversations, innuendos, and metaphors will pass over those who don't get it, a child will not play this game unlike Black Ops or Assassin's Creed, and will probably limit the experience of Catherine. The story is wonderful and interesting - and I'm sure a lot of people can relate to Vincent. I typically am not a fan of story driven games, but I couldn't even bring myself to give a **** when I was watching a long cutscene or something. I liked the persona-like interaction elements with fellow climbers, and the text message system was probably the best dialogue system I've seen. The dialogue system as well as the "morality" meter are both things that make me think "Hey this is kind of like what Mass Effect did minus the horrible fatal flaws." Finally, puzzles have a good difficulty... On easy, you may have to retry a couple times, but nothing too frustrating... On the other difficulties, you need instinct and patience but there's the option to lower difficulty so... yeah... no big deal... Only complaint, in the 5 last puzzles, the first 3 and the last one don't really accomplish anything and the one before the last puzzle have a boss with cheap attacks...… Expand

    While many might have been turned off by the news of this game that's been spreading around those who stick with and can handle how ruthless this game is will be rewarded. I know some who might complain about the meter system in regards to what you make Vincent believe in it works well for this game. When your not pushing blocks to save your boxer short wearing ass you spend the time talking to people some which you'll meet during your climbing escapades. While the social interaction isn't as good as it was in Persona 4 it's still enjoyable as are the characters. The story is a blast and is very amusing to watch. Not only that once you overcome the numerous block puzzles you will feel proud of yourself. I don't even remember the last time I felt so rewarded after playing a game for the current generation of games. But be warned in on easy difficultly this game is a lofty challenge and once you get past stage two you'll find yourself dying, a lot. Those who preserve however will be rewarded and once you beat the game once you can climb blocks with friends to see who's the puzzle master among anyone else who plays this game. While the game isn't perfect any of the grips I have are small and since it's the first game to make me feel fulfilled in the entire year I've owned a Playstation 3 I'm giving it a ten.… Expand

    If Catherine is anything, it's unique. You'll notice it from the second you turn it on right up until your closest hand is smashing the rage-quit button on your console. If you don't like a challenge, stay far away; even the easiest of Catherine's play modes can be grueling.     A game that is intended for adults. And no, I don't mean the Bulletstorm "12 year olds pretending to be adults" demographic. REAL adults. It's not just the subject matter, either. The game is hard, as in you actually have to think. You WILL die, you WILL struggle. And that'll only make you that much more determined to find the solution and climb. And that's the    FINALLY!

    And that's the beauty of it that has been missing from so many games for so long. Most of us grew up on games that made us start over when we shut it off, and while Catherine doesn't go that far, it still pushes you to use your noggin, as a good puzzle game should.

    I realize the Puzzle Genre isn't for everyone, but the game market has been virtually dead outside of Tetris/Bejeweled knockoffs (Which are a different kind of puzzle game.) It's a welcomed change, and it's enjoyable. In addition, Catherine hits on the simplicity of games in the past. Like a good, perfectly cooked steak. It's not fancy. It doesn't try to woo you with inedible garnishes and sauce smeared on your plate. Catherine is, at its core, a fantastic puzzle game. Pushing boxes, but delivered in a method that you wouldn't expect. There's a reason why ATLUS games have the highest price retention out of any other publisher. Persona 4 is still $35 at Gamestop and it's a PS2 game. ATLUS makes quality games that people won't want to give up. Catherine will be no different.    … Expand

    Catherine is a wonderful break from the typical mentality of gaming (Which has devolved to spending mindless hours behind the barrel of a gun and shouting obscenities into the microphone). It's a step back towards games on the original PlayStation that really have been lost due to the influx of social shooters. Puzzles and platforms are it's strong claim to retro fame in a new age concept and coupled with one of the most visually stunning experiences I have experienced on the PlayStation 3. If you've played Qbert or Croc, or even Gex back in the day you will find yourself loving the nostalgia while deeply drawn into the excessively frustrating yet highly addictive game-play. There are very few flaws with this game, the difficulty is sky high but it's a breath of fresh air to see a game these days that will challenge you again and again around every corner. The voice acting is spot on and the Anime cinematic scenes are very new age anime and really moving towards what looks to be a strong new style for Shin Megami Tensei games. Should they put out another game like this it would be in their best interest. If you enjoy games that will bring you to the point of tears in frustration while still making you want to keep playing you've found the exact game for you. It is not a game for people who do not think constructively, and I do not suggest playing on Normal or Hard your first time through, but it is well worth all of the effort. This is one of the great games and I hope to see more just like it.… Expand

    It makes me want to snap my controller in half, but that's what makes it worth it's weight in gold. Along with a challenge that is about up there with mega man and battletoads, it contains a visually stunning cinematic and storytelling experience. If you are looking for something that is truly unique... this is it.

    A gorgeous hybrid. It's a puzzle-solving platformer and sexually-forced anime that's been combined into a well balanced title. The game is going to please the fans as well as it will whet nosy parkers appetite for actually playing it. It shows the Japanese developers know how to appeal to European and American gamers without giving away the bizarre ideas trademark.

    An interactive story enriched with puzzle elements or an arcade/puzzle game with an exceptionally mature and expanded plot – depends on how you look at Catherine. Either way it's both frustrating and fascinating. [April 2012, p.80]

    One of the most obscure games we've ever seen. It's not a platformer and it's not an adventure game, but it combines elements of these two genres in a spectacular way. If it wasn't for the -sometimes- extreme difficulty and some poor design, Catherine would have been a must-have.
