Is really boring, I tried very hard but I can't continue. The combat is awful, the story is slow... I don't know. It has aged very bad. I wanted to like this game because I was behind It so many years... I would like It to be a masterpiece but... It wasn't.

Why make the game about fighting Titans and call it Castlevania?
Why do I have to play some Titan fighting game before I can get to Castlevania?

Chapters 3 and 4 are still dreadful, even if you drop the difficulty level down - the boss fights won't become fought faster......... [0/10]

Chapter 5 starts off going below 0 out of 10, this game is extremely annoying

The only reason I am still playing it is because I want to see Castles, Vampires, Dracula and a good storytelling

However, with every minute of playing this game I begin to think that it will never happen or perhaps I quit playing it before it will

Chapter 5: you can not be making a game out of pazzles alone, too many pazzles - it does not become interesting [0/10]

Chapter 7: The game has began to shine, as we enter the Castlevania, Gabriel is forced to use more shadow magic, which as I imagine is to set the stage for a showdown to come next [3/10]

Chapter 8 to 9: Castelvania Lords of Shadow establishes its main idea that it is inquing into [7/10]

Having finished the whole game + DLC's: It is a profound tale of knighthood, I can not compare it to anything else, so it is its own thing [9/10]

Also have you heard that "You cannot carry any more Daggers?". The Hand holding in this game is absolutely unnecessary to the point where I felt my IQ dropped 10 points by the time I finished the game. (thankfully the second game which was rated much lower for some ungodly reason... fixed this huge annoying issue). The twist ending (Which is not mentioned in my review) was poorly done. Mandatory DLC to get the full story might I also add. (thankfully the steam release has DLC included). If I could give this game a -10 on this website, I would in a heartbeat. This game is a perfect example of why companies need to stick to the source material rather than trying to reboot a series and make something new out of something that was fine to begin with. Companies... if you read these reviews. EXPAND your lore. We, the consumers enjoy it. Don't rewrite something that doesn't need to be rewritten.

Boring. Uninteresting. Generic. And an insult to Castlevania fans more so than Final Fantasy 7 Remake was an insult to Final Fantasy 7 fans.

    Positive: Graphics are nice.

Also as a final note. Nothing every game needs to feel like a half ass movie... We have movies for that. Keep your failed film career out of video games and follow your actual dreams. You can clearly tell the entire games budget was spent hiring Patrick Stewart to read 13 different paragraphs per loading screen, and the art for the books. Guys... you don't need to pay top dollar to hire a known actor that's going to kill your budget for game development.

I spent 3 days playing this game 8 years ago. I haven't gone back to it once. I would not force my worst enemy to play this game. I would not wish this game on anyone even for free.

The visual artistry is really quite beautiful and the gorgeous musical score matches it perfectly. But the gameplay can be derivative since it borrows ideas from GOW, "Shadow of the Colossus" and "Uncharted". This is a case where the presentation seems to be more inspired than the actual game itself. Regardless, every aspect is done exceptionally well. The graphics are amazing, the combat is fun and the story is terrific. So if you're a Castlevania fan, then you'll probably find it to be a very intriguing prequel. Surely it isn't very original, but the quality here is undeniable.
Pacing may be at the worst ok (some puzzles), but there are a lot of excellent things to say.
It lasts a lot more than GoW games and its voice dub is amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To be honest i don't really understand why people rate this game so high. I did read one reviewer who stated the first part of the game is unengaging and that is definately my opinion. So much so that i gave up only at the end of chapter one. Relative to two other hack and slash games i played, heavenly sword and dantes inferno i find much lacking in castlevania. There is no engaging music, the upgrade book is in my opinion more messy and disjointed and the story has at best peeked my interest. However the thing is im not impressed so far and not sure if i want to make the effort to try to get into this game. It has not captured me. I especially think the quick time events are extremely frustrating not knowing immediately what to do, therefore dying and having to repeat sections over and over. I will agree the combat in this game has higher portential and more complex however that also comes with much frustation by way of this game not delineating gameplay mechanics as well as it could. It would take a lot more investment as a gamer and im not certain i want to invest in semi poor mechanics when i could play hack and slash more conveniently in another game. I really liked the open world exploration within the linear pathways at least there was some hunting for treasure ect and that appealed highly. Overall id say this game is probably decent but it did not do enough to engage me to play it. From my perspective im willing to enjoy this game only as a hack and slash. If i wanted better combat well then that is dark souls. If I wanted exploration well that is some other rpg ect so for this game to appeal to me it had to do more things. The ambiance and the setting just seemed empty and the construction of the interface (book) to upgrade skills ect just seemed messy. The first boss is a real turn off as well. Even if you make all the right moves he will throw you off intentionally make you lose health to make the game more difficult. I think this is cheap in a game. If you didn't make a mistake you don't deserve punishment. I might keep the game because there are a lot of good reviews and i may eventually play this, but from my perspective so far I have the prejudice that this game is trying to be the first "Devil May Cry" not Castlevania, and it hasn't copied that game as well. As far as Patrick Stewart voicing well he really seems dull and lame. I'm quite familiar with him, who isn't, and he just sounds like he's also going through the motions. Expand

Can't say the same thing about the sequel but it's still playable.
This game's combat is similar to God Of War but it's a little more in-depth. The boss fights are a blast and there are lots of hidden things around the stages, encouraging exploration. The Story line is really good. ( I dare say this game is better than God Of War).

On top of that the only other game Mercury made before this was the abysmal Jericho; and the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, it's another **** ing reboot! I still played the game on release with an open mind...after all, it is Castlevania; but, sadly, my initial doubts about the title were confirmed.

The most common complaint I hear about this game is that it's a God of War clone. This is frustrating as it is the least legitimate complaint. Yes, the combat is similar, but the combat in GoW is also very similar to Rygar and Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, both of which came out long before GoW. So I think a more apt. comparison for combat would be to Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, which makes sense.

So, if the 'rip-off' label is irrelevant then what are the real pitfalls? Well, why don't we start with the combat. The actual combat system is an interesting idea; two magic gauges, light and dark, one does more damage to enemies, one refills your health and filling the combo meter drops orbs that refill magic. The interesting thing about this is that you don't get any health restoring drops or items, so when you're in the heat of battle and your health and light magic's empty you'll have to fill up your combo meter to survive. It's a system that could really put alot of pressure on the player; however, where it falls short is the games difficulty. Rarely are the battles so hard that your health and light magic will be drained. Another issue I had: many of the bosses are multi-part battles; and between each part there's a cut scene or quick time event (so sick of these things) and these serve to transition you to the next phase. So, on the few bosses that were actually difficult enough to drain my health and light magic I would bet one of their forms and then all the orbs they'd drop would vanish before I could collect them between when the cutscene or quicktime event kicked in and the next form started. Actually, the game is filled with tiny little unnecessary cut scenes during combat. For example: there's these skeleton enemies and after you kill them you have to destroy their remains or they reform; the thing is that every time they die the game stops and the camera zooms in on the remains to show them twitching about (hint, hint); this is extremely annoying when you're fighting swarms of these things, because it does it for every single one. That's just one example, but there's tons of things like that in this game; it really slows down the pace of combat.

On the plus side; there are a lot of moves and upgrades available, but, like I said, the game's so easy you'll never really need em'. I wish there had been more secondary weapons available too; you only get four, and two of them are summons; I also don't know why there's only two summons; I've never heard of a game that had summons, but only two of them, you can't level them up either; it's weird, like they had an idea to put summons in the game but gave up a fourth of the way through.

There's some puzzle and platforming to this game as well, and I would like to commend the designers for including so many dungeon puzzles, because I miss those things. They're not, particularly, complex, but they add some variety. Also, a lot of the puzzle sequences require you to ride some kind of creature to solve them, and that was cool. It's unfortunate that these are only used for solving puzzles and you don't get to stay on them for very long or use them in battle. The platforming, on the other hand, is abyssmal. It feels like they took a game that was primarily meant to be a combat intensive action game and forced a bunch of platforming in it without really thinking it through. Gabriel always does the same tiny leap, and there's no way to control how high, short, or long it is, the only way to do a long jump is to double tap forward, which makes him run, then jump; this gets very irritating when trying to do it on narrow platforms. Couple this with a terrible fixed camera and it's ridiculous; sometimes the camera will automatically change right before you make a jump, or even mid jump; and this happens a lot. Sometimes you'll have to do a long jump or a charged dash in a specific direction but the camera's pulled back so far that you can't even see what direction the characters facing. This isn't the N64, this game came out in 2011, the camera shouldn't be the biggest enemy in the game anymore!

I know this review is nitpicking a bit; but I've come to expect a lot from this franchise and this game just doesn't live up to it's predecessors. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, especially for a studios second game, but would I recommend this game? Not really. Castlevania fans will find it disappointing, and new comers to the series would be better off playing any other game in the franchise

Lastly, where's all that iconic music?

After clearing the game i've came up with a list of things I like and dislike.

    Pros:

Graphics (While not the absolute best the game looks splendid)
Combat (The combat itself is really good and fluid)
Sound (While not like classic Castlevania games the sound is breathtaking)

    Cons:

Story (the story itself is pretty generic with uninteresting characters)
Stealth (The stealth parts this game has are pretty bland to say the least and take away from the combat sections of the game)
Setting (Dracula looks really misplaced in the modern parts of the game and they could have easily done this game/story while still staying in the classic Castlevania setting)
Platforming (The platforming itself is really linear and the game always tell you in what direction you need to go.

Overall it comes down to the question: "Did I enjoy this game?"

Yes I did but there are parts (stealth parts mostly) where the game suddenly takes away the fast paced action only to place you in a slow moving stealth part that really takes away from the game and lemme tell you that none of the stealth parts in this game were enjoyable. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get it/play it since the rest of the game is well done.

While I do feel that most of my cons are bad choices on the design part I still have to give the game an 7/10 for its excellent combat, well done graphics and scenic music. If only they took a step forward from LOS 1 this game could have gotten a solid 8.5/9 out of 10 but sadly they didn't.

Great game all round. Really enjoyed the story. Loved the epic nature of the level design and artwork. The soundtrack perfectly suited the game, it was emotional and captivating and not in your face like so many other games. Graphics are just as good as the Uncharted series (1-3). Although I did encounter several glitches and at times the camera did get in the way of an intense scene, overall it did just fine. My biggest complaint was the hanging ledges and trying to jump off of them. At one point the user is supposed to hang from several ledges and jump backwards before the ledge gives way that the character is holding on to. For what ever reason I had to do this about a dozen times before it worked properly. I even went back and practiced on another ledge that didn't crumble. I also had problems getting a timed event to work correctly at one point. I had to reset the level to get it right. I really enjoyed the story for the most part but at times it was a little far left of what I would expect or want in that type of tragedy story. That would be the only reason I gave it a 8 and not a 9. Although to be fair I would rate it a 8.9. 9.0-Sound

An epic action-adventure, "Lords of Shadow" properly updates the series with a modern style of gameplay while staying true to its roots. To say it is deriative of other present day action games is missing the point. Acclaimed titles such as "God of War" and "Devil May Cry" borrowed ideas from the original "Castlevania". This is simply a "Castlevania" for the modern day era. Spanish game developer Mercury Steam produced it with the help of Hideo Kojima, the director of the "Metal Gear Solid" series. Indeed, Kojima's influence on the production can be felt throughout. Call it the MGS syndrome, but there's just a sprinkle of that series' flavor in this latest entry of "Castlevania". In this 20+ hour adventure, players are cast in the role of Gabriel Belmont, a holy knight who is dispatched to Southern Europe to protect the innocent from the rise of a dark spell. Gabriel is also haunted by the spirit of his late wife, Maria, who guides him on his destiny. Eventually, he is joined by an elder knight and the two attempt to put a stop the end of the world. The world of "Lords of Shadow" is divided into chapters with an evaluation given at the end of each level. It features a rousing musical score indebted to big-budget motion pictures and a terrific cast of actors that deliver solid vocal performances. The gameplay is a mixture of action, adventure, platforming and puzzle solving. It's similar to "God of War", but also carries its own unique tone. Graphically, it is quite detailed and colorful with a solid framerate. And the tight controls help make the numerous combat moves a cinch to perform. "Lords of Shadow" is an amazing game and fans of the series should be pleased with this epic installment. 8.5 out of 10. Expand

the flaws, however, come as it's not a classical castlevania game, it feels more like a mish-mosh of God of War and Shadow of the Colossus... Also, if you're not playing this on an HD television, it's very difficult to see what you're playing at times... I understand that HD is the way the industry is going but it feels like a bit of a let-down because the game is difficult to play on a non-HD television, harder than it ought to be sometimes. the story is a little on the linear side so the replayability does suffer but there is enough of that classic "metroidvania" gameplay style that you can find yourself going back to previous levels to uncover more things you may have missed or were unable to get.

decent, good story, exceptionally beautiful and plays well enough... a solid 9

I later found that Simon's Quest is one of the most hated titles in the whole story(see Angry Video Game Nerd on YouTube for details). With that in mind, I have played many and most of the games. This Castlevania entry is one of the best. I loved every minute of it. A serious challenge, though. You are not just going to walk right through this game. It takes time, it takes a game plan. It takes patience. It also took a seriously well drafted and developed team to make this game. They clearly and concisely nod at the original sidescroller many times throughout; but they also take the current gaming trends to a new level. Is it a ripoff of so many new and popular titles? No. It is the successor to the new and popular titles. This game knows the score, and it aims to beat it. And beat it, it does. Excellent, flawless gameplay with few complaints. I played this game so long that my fingers hurt the first few days that I had it. I blame that on the addictive and intuitive gameplay. The monsters and skeletons and evil things that are out to end you are fun to encounter, and difficult to overcome. The ability to upgrade your gorgeous Vampire Killer certainly aid you in this. The look of the monsters, the Bosses, the Belmont Master himself, are all utterly enthralling and interesting and completely cool. What could outdo them? Maybe the levels themselves. The levels are an exercise in what kind of beauty and immersion video games can offer, specifically on current-generation consoles. Each time you top a hill, pull yourself up a cliff, the camera changes to give you a lead in, which ends up feeling like a film. There are levels that are certainly and positively like nothing I've ever encountered in a video game. They are so beautiful, and the sound brings an ambience to the natural things you see, or even the reverb-heavy rooms of dark, awful castles you'll walk through. This game knows what it is before you know. It it one step ahead of any one person who has played lots and lots of video games. There are a few issues with the game. Wait....there are issues with every game. Big deal. The issues you'll encounter are few and far between. The game is so involving that by the time you get to sit down and **** and **** on a computer about it, you'll have forgotten what the problem was, because so much of what this game gets right has obscured and dissolved everything you hated about it. I give this game a high rating because I, like so many others have an emotional investment in Castlevania. Do you know why? Because Castlevania games are so F---ing hard. I have spent years cussing them out. I always come back, though, because these games, and this one especially, have such a great story. They have such a fascinating world. A dark age where the people that live in it are not sure if there will ever be a good time to be had. They don't necessarily believe that the wrongs will ever be righted. As a Belmont, in any Castlevania game, you have a unique opportunity to take the destiny of you and your people and change it for the better. This game capitalizes on that. This game gets a Siskel and Ebert TWO THUMBS up. If Roger Ebert had been playing Castlevania as long as I have, he'd be on his website right now telling you the reader that this game does it. This game really pulls it off. It's a sensation to watch, to listen to, to feel, to grow frustrated with. And beating it gave the 9 year old kid from 1989 with Simon's Quest in his hand a real victory of closure. Thanks again, Konami. Expand

It's looks somthing like God of War 3 or Dante's Inferno. But I gave it a chance and it is fantastic! But the only thing that ruined it was the unexpected ending. I won't spoil it but I will warn that it completly SH*TS on the whole Castlevania legacy. I still find it a great game, it deserves a perfect score. Expand

Unfortunately, it departs from the Castlevania mold and there will be parts where you will be asking why this is in a Castlevania game. Some parts are needlessly frustrating and the controls are somewhat lacking, with needless emphasis on QTE and button combinations. It makes me miss the simple and intuitive controls of Castlevania IV on the SNES. Still, overall a good effort. Expand

Plus there is enough originality here to keep the game interesting with loads to find and extra challenges and difficult levels for trophy hunters. The game may be a bit linear in places and it may not meet the castlevania fan bases definition of a "true" castlevania title, but all things considered its alot of fun and presented with style. I will begin by saying that this is the first time I have played a Castlevania game. I have on the other hand played games such as Shadow of the Colossus, GOW (trilogy) and other action adventure games such as UC1 + 2 and Assassins Creed. Based on the reviews and comments of other users I expected a good game. Unfortunately, 3 days after purchasing I have traded it in for inFamous 2. II will begin by saying that this is the first time I have played a Castlevania game. I actually struggle to come up with many positives for this game since it borrows many gaming concepts from other games, but fails to excel or improve any of the elements. The only compliment I can give this game is the art direction and fairly pretty graphics (but these are only possible due to the linear approach of the game). The combat was pretty decent, but nothing to write home about. I did enjoy the use of light and dark magic within combat and how you could absorb souls (similar to Onimusha). Now the negatives, the character navigation within the environment is poorly executed compared with other games. It is not very intuitive making for a very stressful experience which is further heightened by some very poor camera angles. Not being able to adjust the camera in this game really comprises the experience! Especially in combat and traversal, since sometimes it is not clear as to where you have to go when navigating. The character movements make it more aggravating thanks to Gabriel enjoying the fact he can kill himself. When using his chain for instance to descend a wall, when you hold down (not knowing what the max. length is you can descend) he will just drop off into a pit. GOW which has fixed cameras as well never suffered from this problem but Castlevania is an agony to play. It is silly little gameplay mechanics like these which just destroy the enjoyment of this game. A game such as this is meant to be fluid. The biggest issue for me other then the camera and environment traversal is just how un-unique the game is. It just is average at everything, making for a very stale experience. Even the story didn't hook me in, or make me want to stick with it. Considering Kojima productions were involved as well actually makes it even more sad that the game did not live to my expectations since I am a huge MGS fan. The main point I want to get across is that the game feels pre-historic compared to its counterparts and never really stands out from the crowd (due to the reasons stated). Expand

I found some flaws in the game that annoyed me in the experience, some of them were ,like, sometimes the character(Belmont) did not respond to the ledges, making unwanted deaths and re spawning al over again , also if, you explored the full place and returned to search for fallen soldiers etc enemies started to pop out , while you all ready beat the same foes in the level. After 25 Years of butchering demons and killing Vlad the impaler also known as Count Dracula the story of Lords of Shadow does not seem to be the most innovative. Our Hero Gabriel Belmont (that name should ring a bell) lost his love, Marie to the dark powers that roam the world embodied by the Lords of Shadow. In seek for revenge and a way to bring his wife back Gabriel is on his journey to get hold of the so-called God Mask that is said to be able to bring back the dead.
You fight your ways through chapters that start each time with a narration by Zobek, a fellow member of the Brotherhood that Gabriel belongs to. Zobek is voiced by Patrick Stewart who is a real treat to listen to. All in all the voice cast is great and is doing an outstanding job. Robert Carlyle (28 Weeks Later) as Gabriel, Aleksandar Mikic (Eastern Promises) as Pan or Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) as a character I won't spoil just to name a few big shots that lend their voices to this game that is heavy with ambitions to itself.

While the story lives up to the cast's great performances it astonishes the player more with great action-sequences than an innovative story. But what can you expect from a game that feels like it wants to challenge God of War or Dante's Inferno? Lords of Shadow is no RPG that sucks the player into its story, but wants to give you the feeling you had, when you played the first Castlevania back on the NES. You shall feel challenged fighting the world's evil and it is supposed to be fun.
    And it is.

And also it is its own game, GoW fanboys can hate it all they want, they know C:LoS is a better game but won't admit it.

I'll split this review into sections:

    1. combat
The combat in this game is brand new, and by far the most dynamic and enjoyable combat system that has ever been brought to life in its genre. First off, you have a TON of different moves you can use, they are all unique and add style to how you want to fight. Secondly, the enemy AI are programmed very well. They all have tons of different moves and actually dodge your attacks instead of just strafing about and attacking at random times (GoW)
And then you have the magic system. The blue magic is basically life steal, so you can sustain yourself in battle. The red magic is improved damage, if you want to be aggressive.

    2. puzzles
Meh, the puzzles weren't all that great.
The platforming was, if you want to count that in. Platforming was superb.

    3. story
    Amazing story, really truly amazing.

    4. sound
Music was awesome, this is the best music in an action-adventure game. If you are traversing the landscape, the music will be relaxing and you will sink in your seat. If you are in combat, the music will give you adrenaline just add to the epic.

    5. controls
Amazing, best controls in an action-adventure game.

    conclusion:

Well this is my favorite linear action-adventure game to date. GoW 1-3 is probably my second favorite.
So yeah if you think god of war is awesome, check this game out because it will blow you away.

The only problem I had with it is its reoccurring frustrating frame rate.
But that isn't nearly enough to damage unforgettable experience you will have.

The games are similar because of genre similarities, but that doesn't make one a clone. That aside, the use of the gameplay is the polar opposite of GoW. Instead of brutal offense, the player must use attentive defense to defeat even the run of the mill monsters. The graphics, the music, the voice over cast. All this is top notch. Anyone who says this is Castlevania has clearly never played any other Castlevania games. Yes, it's a "reboot" (which is a huge cop-out in itself) but that aside: 1. Soundtrack - Castlevania songs are famously upbeat and orginal, blending rock/pop with gothic feel. This game goes for bland symphony which is indistinguishable from any other average medieval themed game. 2. Atmosphere -Anyone who says this is Castlevania has clearly never played any other Castlevania games. 2. Atmosphere - Aside from the Vampire level which was quite well done (duh) the feel was more like Darksiders than CV. A great example of lack of atmosphere is how they reference God and Satan, ok so they are embracing the christian mythos like previous CV games, but there is a total lack of crosses and christian imagery - instead is "Agharta" a weird city with a blend of Mayan/Egyptian/European feel that supposedly existed before Europe. Another example is "the Brotherhood of Light"? C'mon what a generic vague and lame concept. Also the guy helping you is "Pan" - why not an angel? Also where is this all happening? It supposed to be "southern europe" if you believe the reviews but the map is a big island - definetly not Romania/Transylvania. Again all these countless little things add up to a generic fantasy game - maybe even you like it - but it's not CV. 3. The Gameplay - Everyone already pointed out the rip from other games but how about the fact it's too easy? Platforms are obvious one ways, dying restarts you where you fell, the advanced moves are varied but completely unnecessary to win in combat, the puzzles are simple and obvious (in fact you can cheat at the expense of exp. points used to buy the worthless advanced moves.)
    4. The Ending - I won't spoil it but it makes zero sense. A total letdown.
Conclusion: I have to assume this is all happening because Konami and their Metal Gear crew are full of ego - more obsessed with creating superfically epic games than tightly wound stories with deep gameplay that fits into the pre-existing universe that fans have come to love and want to revisit.
