The online four-player is badass, with support for USB headsets and a split-screen option to enable two players to go online using the same PS3. But Calling All Cars! really shines as a party game, and if you can get four friends in the same room all screaming and cursing each other out, then that's worth the price of the download right there.

A diminutive price tag doesn't make the strange dearth of meaningful map and weapon selections any more palatable. Worth the cash for its frenetic pace if you've got friends lined up to play, but more disposable than memorable.

Fortunately, the game's slick cel-shaded presentation shines with delightful looking animations, particularly with the prisoners. They scamper about with a vaudeville-like appearance and pack lots of attitude -- even while being flung in the air.

BoomtownWhile it remains simplistic overall, Calling All Cars is undeniably a great little multiplayer game, easy to pick up and very fun to have a quick blast on.
-
Calling All Cars! is a frantic good time that's cut short by a serious lack of content.
-
It's difficult to overly criticise Calling All Cars! because it's cheap, looks and feels good (native 1080p at mostly 60fps does make a difference) and in multiplayer mode you definitely get a decent return from the impulse purchase price tag. It's just hard to avoid the sensation that some select gameplay tweaks, a couple of extra maps and a wider range of weapons could've made Calling All Cars! a minor classic as opposed to a promising but ultimately disposable game best sampled in small doses.

Edge MagazineThere aren’t enough maps, there aren’t enough distinctions between the vehicles, and there’s just not enough meat on what feel like solid bones. [Sept 2007, p.96]

It was supposed to be a revolution and CAC would lead the charge: cheap and cheerful downloadable games showcasing the PSN's future. But is a future of games this shallow what we want, no matter what the price?

NickG.May 28, 2007It's fun for a while as a single player, but the game is much better when played with others.
