A bland first person shooter that got revitalized with a new coat of paint? Yeah, somehow Gearbox made this work.
Borderlands 1 is filled with fun characters and locations. A sense of solitude adds to this oh-so weird planet of Pandora. The true sense of being alone in a post apocalypses is brought here and it stays. That's definitely something that can't be said for the next games.

Honestly, other than the inexistent story so far and the ps3's 20 fps , the game is incredible and charming. Fun to play, great shooting, interesting graphics with that cell shaded art style make it so good. I look forward to playing the rest when i finish it and even buy the third one on my ps5. The only reason i m giving it a 9 is becaude it has some extra potential and... well.... i hate sub 30 fps so yea. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Borderlands is a remarkably ok game, especially now when we have an objectively superior sequel.

While I can appreciate this game for what it was, going back to it nowadays is nothing short of disappointing, the overall gameplay is fine, if less interesting than with its smaller array of weapons. It's really the writing where this game falters, unlike every other game, even the Pre-Sequel, I struggle to remember a single line of dialogue from this game, it's all very unremarkable, from the story, which amounts to "go do **** to the characters, all of which are made far better in BL2 and have striking little personality here, and to the dialogue, which is pretty humourless, or maybe not, I don't think I laughed once, so either it isn't a comedy like the following games, or the writing really is just terrible.

Something you can say about every Borderlands game is the villain is memorable, from Handsome Jack, an unforgettably charismatic villain who you simultaneously want to take down and also don't, to hell, even the Streamer Twins in BL3 with their terrible cringe personas, and Tales has some pretty memorable antagonists even outside of Jack, Vasquez is a brilliant bastard, but BL1 falls flatter than a board because the villain here... just kinda exists? The only remarkable thing about her is how unremarkable she is, she exists, then she's killed, then you fight the final boss, end of.

Borderlands isn't a game I'd recommend you go back to for any reason really, it's not awful, the gameplay is still fun, but it pales in comparison to both BL2 and BL3, while good for its time, it's best seen as a Tekken 1 or a Resident Evil 1, good once upon a time, but perfected by its successors in every way.

Although i've only played the remastered edition of Borderlands, I have the main idea of the game. But, the game is still a fun and enjoyable experience that is only enriched the further along you play. One of the only issues I have with this game is the lack of a concrete storyline that flows. An example of the weak storyline are the boss battles. The boss battles happen and are forgotten for the most part as you continue to make your way through the game even though they are very important milestones which should be remembered in later levels of the game. The only recurring plot point is the vault, which is brought up pretty frequently throughout the game. In conclusion, the first installment in the Borderlands franchise was a great idea that came out half baked.

Edit: After finally getting around to playing this game for a second time, I've really come to appreciate the atmosphere, humor, and character this game presents. The music and color pallet really made you feel like you were alone in a desolate wasteland. Plus, the character and dry humor commit to the idea of a lonely planet full of maniacs even stronger. But, this game obviously still has it's flaws. The gameplay isn't all that exiting compared to Borderlands 2 & 3, and the skill trees especially suck. The story is also really dull and not interesting. Yet, because of just how good the atmosphere and feel is to Pandora I'm raising my score. My previous score from before I replayed this was a 7, now I'm bumping it up to an 8.5

As you are leveling up you make decisions about the characters skills and abilities. You can add new effects, improve stats or gain new skills that help you a lot. It is worth experimenting because you wont learn every skill in the game (You can always reset the skills and test other options). The loot system is pretty good balanced. You get a lot of loot but the better staff is rare enough that you feel rewarded it you earn your legendary equipment. They used cel shading for the graphics which is a turn off for many people. I will say the cell shading graphics age very well and it gave the series their individual style. I will also say it looks a bit boring sometimes. The music is good especially the intro. The story is a bit on the generic part (go here than there) and the villains are nothing to write home (They delivered both in Borderlands 2 with one of the best video game villains of all time). Overall a good start for a new IP and the foundation for the Borderlands series. Expand

I wouldn't define Borderlands' plot as useless or inexistent. It mostly represents a pretext, it certainly does not shine by writing, humor is at medium levels, without ever exaggerating too much. Characters like Scooter, Claptrap and Zed still lack that characterization that would have made them iconic; the most interesting character is, indeed, "Angel" played by beautiful Brittani Johnson, who accomplishes to present herself as seductive and eloquent. These elements make it a light plot, which is followed with pleasure, although it can be quite boring in some parts.

Borderlands' gameplay wanted to offer something innovative and, in a sense, it certainly succeeded. Quest diary, I must admit, is one of the best I have ever seen in a video game: always clear, it provides the information needed, it has no obvious problems of overlapping objectives; really well done. Variety of secondary quests is good, they differ in type and they entertain, although obviously some excel in quality over others. Excellent the idea of creating different weapons/equipment manufacturers, each one specialized in a type of weapon and with its own recognizable peculiarities; this, I'm sure, is one of the game's success factors. Rarity system used for the loot (even the weapons) works well: colors - from white, through green, blue, purple and finally orange - give a nice visual impact at the time of obtaining the reward; a good design choice. Unfortunately, at least in the basic game, the problem relating to levels and "experience aging" is very noticeable: it becomes increasingly difficult to get EXP points, and only the most recent enemies guarantee a good leveling. As in other cases, I would have preferred an increase in the NPCs' level directly proportional to that of the player. Weapons are also subject to aging: a legendary orange but low-level weapon can easily be outclassed by a common white high-level weapon. Loot generation's random algorithm works well, but it's obvious how it would have been improved, since it's actually quite common to find weapons that are very similar. Variety of enemies is good, which is also reflected in the vulnerabilities that every type of enemy has: fire, acid, electric or explosive. In general the concept of "Role-playing shooter"... works. It turned out to be successful with the use of different classes, each one with its own UNIQUE class ability and perks, impossible to be found in other classes. Does it remind something? Yes, that's how RPGs worked until the first half of 2000s, and it's interesting to think how, looking both in 2009 and 2019, shooters incorporated elements from RPGs, while RPGs themselves lost things like "classes", which made them, well... "role-playing" video games, in fact.

Cel-shaded graphics turned out to be a strength in Borderlands. Making good use of Unreal Engine 3 rendering, Gearbox managed to guarantee a stylish look to the game, which at the same time struggled to age: it's still nice to look at and succeeded in everything, from characters to environments, even 10 years later. In short: cel-shading ages well and better. Nothing exceptional about the soundtrack, though. Certainly a catchy song like Cage the Elephant's "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked", which is only heard during the opening sequence, is not enough to save the whole thing.

Borderlands is a great video game. Not perfect, and not everything positive it has, eventually come to shine... but it's influence is tangible. With at least 4.5 million copies sold, the game became Gearbox's golden goose, which would then create a sequel on these basics that would eclipse this first chapter. Then, after 10 years, just think about Cyberpunk 2077 and how, as far as we know now, will use a color-based loot and rarity system similar to Borderlands.

The first being story, or the lack thereof. I just remember that you basically did fetch quest after fetch quest until another area opened, rinse and repeat, until you got to the final area. Then, the final area was extremely long and drawn out and I just found myself hauling a$$ in the last area to get to the final boss so it could be over.

Which leads me to the second thing that annoyed me about the game, it seemed like to me that it took forever to beat. I am pretty sure it took me well over 30 hours to beat this game. And while that is a decent sized game to play for most games, it is brutal for a FPS that does the same things over and over again with little variety.

At the time this came out, it was a very unique FPS in a sea of pretty bland WW2 FPS games, and stood out because of that. Unfortunately, for the most part it is a long, bland shooter that is really best in small doses.

For some time I had been looking for an open world game that could be played cooperatively and have enough gameplay features to keep me and my couch co-op partner fully invested in that experience and for more than 20 hours.

Borderlands is the answer to that wish, blending fast paced FPS action with RPG gameplay mechanics and multiple open areas to explore with a multitude of quests to complete. But these elements alone aren't the only thing that sets Borderlands. Whacky, but clever humour and ludicrously OTT characters dominate the spotlight, all set within an awesomely presented cartoon-esque world.

The loot and randomly generated variety of weapons will keep you organising your backpack, making for space for that next great gun, shield or grenade perk. Dollar signs on your screen are another incentive to keep dropping enemies and looting every 'lootable' container in sight.

The gunplay is great, with team player revives when you're in trouble, but what's awesome is getting back on your feet with a 'Second Wind'. However, lack of the ability to move while in 'Second Wind' can lead to some frustrating moments (the only low point, besides the tedium of running and gunning).

The story has it's key moments and unfortunately ends on a bit of an anti-climax, but fills you with anticipation for how the next instalment will play out.

For the complete Borderlands experience and story, it's best to grab a copy of the Game of the Year Edition that comes with all 4 DLC packs that are worth investing extra time into.

All in all, Borderlands isn't perfect, but it does bring something that we've always wanted. And that's always a plus when your subconscious wish is granted.

Borderlands drove me crazy enough to quit at one point, but then after seeing some responses to my complaints (and the same complaints made by many others), I decided to try it again and heed the advice of others who pointed out that, while the game did not make it clear at all, you cannot get ahead of yourself in this game or it can be brutal. You are free to advance quickly into certain areas of the game from the start, but you will be punished if you are not at a certain level with the right weapons.

As I progressed through Borderlands and better understood how to play the game, I grew to like it more and more, and by the time I was done I really liked the game. However, the game certainly is not without it's flaws. The re-spawning AI can be really annoying and detract from your immersion into the game. While there are supposed to be gazillions of weapon combinations in the game, there's really not that many that are actually different, other than in name and appearance. The graphics take some getting used to, but much like the game itself, grow on you. As I understand it, this game has an excellent multi-player, and a lot of people base their high score of the game heavily on that aspect of the game. My review is for the single player alone because I have not played the multi-player component.

Borderlands looks beautiful. With the cel-shaded graphics giving the entire world looking straight out of a comic book or cartoon. There is a multitude of areas to explore each with its own distinct personality. The weapon drops feel rewarding as they all have a different weight and feel to them along with some extra abilities that give it even more distinction.

BUT... there are some other things to talk about.
The entire game lacks a story. I mean your a treasure hunter going after treasure, but the game forgets this plot for large periods of time and then your "guide" all of a sudden reminds you of your original goal. The side stories that the game introduces you to aren't amazing either. It isn't until he end that the game finally decides to make any resemblance of a plot. The who back and forth between its your story to create and no wait there is a plot becomes jarring toward the end. And then the game ends. No literally this is a complaint it just ends. You fight the finally boss and turn in the quest and it is just over. No cut scene that signifies the end except a tease for DLC. The game continues through the use of expansions. All of them relate to the story of borderlands because the DLC actually has a cohesive story that can be followed and flows into the events of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. If you do buy the game you should buy the game of the year edition as it contains story related features not present in the vanilla game.

Through the in cohesive plot that the game throws at you it is still fun to play. Especially with friends, which I have none of... so I'll rate the game as a solo experience.

The most overrated game I've ever played in my entire life.

First off, it's repetitive as hell and extremely boring.

Second, the shield is useless. The idea was to allow you to take a few hits before losing any actual health and it recharges over time, but 90% of the enemies you face follow you, the other 10% have ranged weapons, and both deal enough damage to completely deplete the shield in 1-3 hits. This is especially frustrating when the enemy AI is extremely high to the point where they have better accuracy than you do and can kill you easier than you can kill them even with worse weapons and equal level (sometimes even lower leveled) as you. Plus, all the bosses are enemies that follow you and deal more damage to you than you can to them to a degree worse than the normal enemies in the game and you can't run away from them far enough or fast enough to give your shield the time that it needs to recharge.

Speaking of running, it takes forever to get anywhere in this game. Sure there's vehicles, but they control worse than the MAKO from Mass Effect, and there are some areas where, even with vehicles, it still takes forever to get anywhere. And if your vehicle is destroyed for some reason, you're forced you to walk around in an area that takes forever WITH A VEHICLE. And while one person could argue that the game's "Fast Travel" helps with this problem...it does not. The "FT" system is another good mechanic in theory, but it has its own set of problems that make it completely worthless. The first being that some areas have multiple "Fast Travel" ports while others have none making it useless for certain missions. As if that wasn't enough, there is almost no way to find out which port is which without spending some time making a map to use detailing such information as the map in the game doesn't do it for you.

This brings me to my next problem: the maps. First off, you have to go to the options menu in order to see a map of any kind. For the first few missions, it's not that bad. But as you progress through the game, it gets more frustrating as you have to constantly check the map to make sure that you took the right paths to get where you want to go. I guess that the developers at Gearbox forgot the industry standard that is the mini-map. Not only that, but the game has multiple areas, each with its own map. That's all fine and dandy until you find out that there is no way to look at the maps of different areas if you're not in them. None. This is also something that makes the "Fast Travel" mechanic such a waste as you can't see what areas you need to go to or find out what area with an "FT" port is closest to where you need to go. The DLC makes this problem even worse as every time you exit the game, you return at the very beginning of the very first area in said DLC, requiring you to go ALL THE WAY BACK to a mission point if you didn't completely finish what you were doing before you left the game.

Instead of a mini-map, the game gives you a compass. But that has its own problems as well. While for some games the compass works fine, like Call of Duty that don't have an expansive, open-world map, for a game like Borderlands that do have an expansive, open-world map there are so many different paths to take that unless you frequently check the maps in the options menu, you'll more than likely get lost and have to backtrack to go the correct path.

Additionally, most of the weapons are downright useless compared to the assault rifles. The handguns and the revolvers don't cause enough consistent damage to an enemy to warrant you using it added with the fact that you're usually facing multiple enemies and focusing on one for too long will get you killed. Sniper rifles work for long ranged enemies, but not when you face at least 1 enemy or more that run towards you while you aim. Shotguns are powerful, but they're too slow to use and getting up close to a ranged enemy takes too long to do before you're killed. Rocket launchers are even slower and get you killed when reloading.

The RPG elements aren't much to talk about either. While not as frustrating as the AI or the area traversing, they are pretty useless if playing solo. Most of the perks that are of any use in single player are only good for strictly offensive strategies, but those can only get you so far without dying constantly. When it comes to defensive perks, on the other hand, most of them can only be used when playing cooperatively making them useless to people who don't generally play cooperatively.

All in all, I would give this game a D rating. Maybe a C- when I'm not overly frustrated by its idiotic mechanics. However, even with a generous C- rating, I can't possibly fathom how this game could be considered even as an honorable mention for Game of the Year during a year when games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, and Bayonetta were released.

STORY AND CHARACTERS: Borderlands makes a strong point to a gamer. Don't take it to serious. Neither the storyline nor the characters. If you manage to do that you'll get a kick playing it. I manage to do it.
PRESENTATION: Original to the FPS genre. The cell shading look gave it charisma and the post-apocalyptic wasteland worked to perfection. The creatures are a bit lame though. A missed shot here.
GAMEPLAY: FPS based there's really not much to say how the controls feel. But we can speak about the weapons. They are Borderlands finest quality. They are of all sizes and shapes. Literally there are hundreds of them and each and every one of them a treat to use. Easy to get (don't need to buy them because there are chests everywhere and each time you kill a foe is weapon is yours to pick up) and satisfying to use.
PROGRESSION: It's potentially endless because you can replay the story over and over and since there are so many weapons and gadgets around you can customize your character in a variety of ways. Less appealing is the fact that they give so many guns but none are customizable. A pitty.
ONLINE: I'm not a fan of cooperative based games and that's the only online experience you'll have in Borderlands. The games gives you battle arenas but the competitive multiplayer is unexisting. Why?
These minor issues aside Borderlands is an original and unique experience. Thums up.

This game is more of a FPS Game. and by that i mean it's just fun to play and that's all a game really needs to be. the areas and the enemies are as diverse as the guns. and now with all the patches and the DLC this is a huge game worth every penny I have sunk into it. All the DLCs are a ton of fun and just add more content to such an awesome game! if you like huge adventures and FPS and changing up guns all the time this is a must have game. and i mentioned the patches, this game did have huge load times and frame rate issues but on this play through which is long past the release of the game it performs much better, and while the load times are not instant they are very short for the huge areas they load up. The art style I personally love, it's a great change of pace from all the photorealistic games out there. the cartoonish style allows these huge areas to load with minimal texture pop in. usually I notice some texture pop in when you load into a new area but after a few seconds the whole area runs smooth and it is never a distraction. Overall one of the best games in my library and I just counted the other day, i own 85 ps3 titles on disk and about 30 downloadable games (estimate cuz most i have since deleted off my HD) seriously this game is so fun and is only multiplied if you play with a friend or three other friends online! Really fun first person FPS that has a unique artstyle and a quirky feel. The storyline is poor but the extensive range of weaponry (I'm talking hundreds of thousands of randomly generated loot) really keep you engrossed as you search for the next best weapon. Overall its fun and occasionally challenging but not frustrating. Quality DLC really keeps the game fresh.

The selling point of this game was the amount of guns in it, and they were right, there's a ton of guns due to having them with generated stats. Definitely a fun game, the story was interesting in waves, not really hooked into the story of the game personally. Borderlands is a game that completely lacks any sort of decent story, it even goes as far as not even having voice recordings to introduce missions to you, but rather makes you read through a passage of text which describes your task and also tries to inject some character development into these passages. This detracts from the experience for me and makes the action feel very repetitive and pointless beyond trying out your new weapon (of which there are thousands).
Borderlands is a very interesting game in what it tries to become both visually and with regards to it's gameplay. Some will love everything about it including it's very relaxed approach to narrative as well as it's stark visual style. I, however found it tedious and lacking in direction but slightly redeemed when playing with friends either online or locally.

The sound was mediocre and in many places it felt barren or lacking. The art style is similar to something you might find in a comic book, but expect to see a lot of brown rocks. Most of the terrain in this game is just bland brown rocks. The gameplay is solid enough for a console shooter, each character has their own special ability in combat and a couple "favored" weapon types. The random loot system is alright, but encourages the dreaded grind, or saving & reloading to re-loot a town's treasure chests in an attempt to get a better weapon. On a personal note, I would have found this title more compelling if the various parts of the weapons (every weapon modifier has a different graphical part on a weapon) could have been removed, replaced and swapped freely between guns. Sadly this is not the case, and as such it is a fairly enjoyable, but not very inventive game. (This review is based on the core game itself and none of it's expansion packs) Expand

Really well put together on the presentation end. The weapon choice is MASSIVE. However, if you are like me, you will find 4 to 6 guns that you will use through almost the whole game. The one "issue" (if it can be called that) is that you can't really buy good guns. I bought a gun once from the vending machines, then found a similar gun 3x better on the ground. If I could leave any advice, never buy guns from the store. The best guns are found by killing. Save your money...

Which leads me to the next point. Money is almost worthless. You find so many guns, which you can sell back, enemies drop money, and leave money laying around that it is almost an unnecessary thing. I am sitting at 1.5 million credits easy and climbing. If you die it takes a percentage of your cash to "pay" for your respawn, but if you don't die a lot there is no limit to your wealth.

The Co-op works really well and the resource sharing works really well to not leave anyone out or falling behind. Find some people close to your rank and have at it. My only complaint, and why it gets a 9 and not a 10, is the loading between areas of the world. Its not that big of a deal but I wish they could have set it up in someway so that it would stream load or something. I am sure this was the best way for them to do it, as I am not a designer, but kind of a pain when you have to do a lot of traveling without warping. Great game.

For those who want to explore this new land and find new areas and items, it has that in bundles. To experience the true feel of this game, you want to have both, and then you can truly appreciate this game. Graphics are very unique, Gearbox called it the 'box art' style, and it looks amazing. Though looking up close, the textures can look bland and unattractive, the world itself is can either make u sit in awe or make you cringe from its grotesque look. You have four different players to choose from, but the overall experience wont change depending on who you play as. Soldiers can deploy turrets, Hunters have a hawk that hurts enemies and drops extra loot, Beserker has an extra strong melee, and the Siren can turn invisible. These special abilities can be fun, but the main gameplay is the for all of them. Story here is pretty strait-forward, you are a fortune hunter looking for "The Vault" and there are a lot of people who don't want u to find it or just don't like your face at all.The story isn't what is so great though and isn't why you play Borderlands, its the massive amount of guns and enemies, there is said to be over 100,000 guns, enough to make any collector drool. The enemies can seem standard at first, just some mutated dogs and birds with some bandits, but when these simple bad guys branch out into stronger or more deadly opponents, that's when you really have some fun. It is always enjoyable to have a small bandit screaming at you with an ax and you blow his head off. The vehicles in this game will need some getting used to, but once you do its alot of fun. The best aspect of this game is the co-op, either local or online. Getting online co-op can be very rewarding. If you were stuck on a mission and couldn't figure it out, then you would get online and find a party that is on the same mission and have up to three other people figure it out with you. When you got offline and back to your game, all of the stats, weapons, and experience you got with then transfers to your game. Though, be careful, i was hit with a glitch by doing this. I got online and played for a while with a group who was farther ahead than me, though i had already beaten the game and was on my second play though. Because we finished missions after the one i was on, that means all of the missions i finished were done but i hadnt done the mission to get to those yet, so my game didn't know what to do and didn't let me finish my mission anymore, meaning i could go on anymore. That said, Borderlands is extremely fun and addictive and deserves your time. It might be too long to some or may be too RPG like for their taste, but to most this game is a blast and can give you a good laugh once in a while as well. Expand

Overall I think it's a okay game not a better rpg than fallout 3 though. If you like exploring and massive amounts of sorting through weapons to find that perfect gun then this game is for you. Great game, finished it twice. Good shooter mixed with lightweight RPG. The Good: - humour - graphics - good gameplay - good reply value - plenty of guns, guns, guns The Bad: - Too easy. - enemies respawn to quickly The Ugly: - It ends - Bugs: some patched, others don't.

Call it a first-person Diablo, an evolution of Resistance 2's co-op mode, Monster Hunter for the west, or a party game for FPS gamers. Call it the best example of the transformative power of multiplayer. Whatever you designate it, Borderlands is a decent single-player FPS/RPG that simply becomes great -- when playing with others.
  2. It's also one of those games that's so strong in parts that its shortcomings become almost glaring by comparison. As such, the game's barebones story, lackluster AI, and insufficient player trading options are real disappointments that prevent the game from reaching its full potential. But when you're frantically trying to stay alive while getting swarmed by an angry horde of gigantic spiderants, chances are you won't care much about that other stuff.

It's something action role-playing game fans looking for an experience more up-close and brutal than genre entries of the third-person variety should have a blast with, and one of the more memorable products of 2009.
