Pretty fun game. Very gritty combat sequences that are very fun to play through. Good art direction and design. There are some places where you will feel like there is too much repetition and the camera is a little akward (way to close to Batman). Definitely worth a purchase or rental!

It's quite simple for me...the only disappointment I experienced while playing this game was the fact that I have never read comic books of any kind before, so considering how the characters of Batman: AA were based off the comic versions, I really didn't know much about the characters that weren't in the movies (I have, nonetheless, seen all the movies, so I do know of the It's quite simple for me...the only disappointment I experienced while playing this game was the fact that I have never read comic books of any kind before, so considering how the characters of Batman: AA were based off the comic versions, I really didn't know much about the characters that weren't in the movies (I have, nonetheless, seen all the movies, so I do know of the ones featured in them). But at the same time, this was halfway a good thing for me, b/c I found myself excited to unlock the next of many character bio's through the Riddler puzzles. Despite my ignorance of 90% of the characters who were mentioned in the bio's, I have to say that in my opinion, this was one of the most fun games I have ever played. First, everyone must understand the intentions of this game. Those who say the puzzles are too easy or the fighting is too easy or how easily it is for Batman to evade attackers by shooting up to the gargoyles, you have to understand that if you look at who Batman is, these things SHOULD be somewhat easy. He's Batman, for crying out loud. Would Batman ever have a tough time disposing of low level thugs like the many thugs you have to fight in the game?? No, b/c he's knowledgeable in many forms of martial arts, so the fighting should be fairly easy. Would Batman ever have a tough time trying to solve puzzles and riddles like the ones left behind by the Riddler in the game?? No, b/c he is a master detective and an all around genius in every aspect of the word, so the puzzles should be fairly easy. Would Batman have any trouble in losing moronic henchmen like the ones in the game?? No, b/c he is a true master of stealth tactics, so it should be fairly easy to elude the moronic henchmen in the game. That's what needs to be understood about this game...they wanted you to feel like you are Batman. What it's like to "Eat chumps like them everyday for breakfast" (hahaha that was so cheesy it was actually funny), being able to easily get out of a tight spot by shooting into and flying through the rafters, and solving the Riddler's puzzles in a decent amount of time. For those who haven't played it yet, don't let anyone fool you...the combat and puzzle solving isn't as easy as some may say. You will find yourself running through the different possibilities of an answer to a puzzle or the best strategy to use to take down a room full of armed henchmen many times throughout playing. Oh, for those wondering why Batman is so big...this game was made in homage to the comics, not the movies, and in the comics, Batman is pretty big...with the Joker being as thin as Gumby. That's why they are portrayed that way. Yes, there are some minor variations to the characters that do appear in the game compared to their comic book counterparts, but nothing too dramatic. In closing, I will say that if you are a fan of The Bat, you will not be disappointed with this game whether you buy or rent. The same can probably be said about the casual fans, like myself, also. I don't really care if anyone thinks I'm out of my mind for saying this, but based on the fact at how extremely fun and engaging as this game was for me and how I was enjoying the game when I completed everything just as much as I was when I first started the game (which is rare for me), I can honestly say that, to ME, this is in the top 5 greatest games I have ever played. Period. Expand

The best part is that you don't need to be a fan of Batman or the comics. It's soon 2011 and it stills holds up. The graphics weren't that good when it came out, using old Unreal engine technique. This is not your average superhero license game. Rocksteady have taken the genre by the scruff of the neck with Arkham Asylum, making sure that not only are fans of the Caped Crusader catered for, but gamers are given a tasty treat as well.

Where to start? The game is packed with not only ideas, but activities throughout the game, making for hours of play. While some of these are, rather unfortunately, of the "collect all of the..." mould, Rocksteady have taken a hugely respectable leap forward, in allowing the player to butt heads with the Riddler, solving all the puzzles he leaves around the island. The island itself is well crafted, and large enough to keep most players happy, although if you hate backtracking, be aware that you will be retracing your steps more than once.

The combat is excellent, and for me, didn't get old. It feels as though you are connecting with each henchmen when you punch, kick and throw, instead of having a big burly character swinging his fists until he happens to collide with someone. Batman is a tornado of hurt, and in the middle of a crowd, even a novice player can quickly rack up the combos.

The story sometimes feels like it exists purely to bring out the big names in the Batman universe, but why shouldn't it? The villains are hugely entertaining, and hearing the Joker taunting the Dark Knight over the PA system is a neat touch. The boss battles are hit and miss, with some feeling like a by the numbers fight with an old school boss, and some feeling truly fun.

I would heartily recommend this game to anyone, not just fans of Batman, as it is hugely entertaining, well crafted, and imaginative. This could be a classic

This is by far the best batman game of all time and is with in my top three for the PS3. I mean come on, what more could a batman fan ask for, Joker, Quinn, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Poison Ive, Zasz, even the Riddler gives you challenges beyond that of many other games. And of course, beating up all of the henchmen never gets old. Batman Arkham Asylum rocks!

Really good game but I had a couple of gripes. The detective mode basically allowed you to cheat and the combat was too easy and the [spoiler] lunatics were just plain annoying. However, the combat looked really good, the game was fun and an amazing stealth game. 9 out of 10.

Are you kidding me? This was one of the best games of 2009. It actually feels like a throwback to classic Super Metroid's awesome exploration and I love it. Prior to this game I couldn't remember the last time a game grabbed me and got me excited to finish it. My only complaint would be the lack of reward for solving all the RIddler's Puzzles, but at least they were fun to solve!

The visuals in this game are downright stunning, and the atmosphere is plucked right out of a movie set. The characters all look great, and the levels themselves will give you a real sense of dread when you enter areas like the sewers Killer Croc roams, or the morgue.

The controls are very intuitive, but the combo system can take some serious getting used to. There were some trophies for doing giant combos that I feel are nearly impossible. None of this will detract from the game too much though, because the combat is tight and the gadgets all work great!

Lots of side quests will keep you going for hours, like solving Riddles. Locating hidden items, and separate game modes like challenge modes really keep the replay value high.

If ever there was an action adventure game you should go right out and buy this is one of them. The game has quite a few jaw dropping moments, that you'll certainly be telling your friends about.

The game has been out for a long time now and the sequel is about to be released, so you can find it relatively cheap. This game is worth every penny you spend on it, and an adventure you'll be glad you paid to be a part of!

Graphics: In two words: Top-Notch. Batman himself looks fantastic, his suit radiating in detail and polish with his cape being on an entirely different level. The way it flows is ridiculously accurate to how a cape should move. You will get it occasionally to clip into the floor however and facial models can look a bit dated at times but nothing major. The art style is classic Batman, with it's creepy, classic noir with a mix of modern detail to it. Every character aside from Bane perhaps and Harley's new nurse outfit is a hit or miss looks exactly how they should and the knew Killer Croc and Scarecrow designs are fantastic. P.C is clearly the best as it has added effects and better quality overall. PS3 and 360 versions hold up but like most multiplats the PS3 may have the occasional FPS dip. Still looks great though. 9/10 easily.

Gameplay: The gameplay is separated into two styles. Melee brawls and stealth sections. Melee Brawls put you against waves of thugs and utilizing "free flow combat" You take them out with a variety of punches, counters, kicks, throws etc with your combat arsenal growing bigger as unlock upgrades via XP you gain, ranging from more armor to more combat moves. Early on the game can be tempting in just mashing the attack button to win fights while tilting the stick in the direction the enemies are facing. Though the fights are nicely animated it can get tedious. Luckily the enemies eventually upgrade to shock batons and knife wielding goons which let you change your tactics and taking down a group of enemies makes you feel like your the Batman himself.

Stealth is a bit more complex. Basically Batman finds himself in a room full of Goons armed with fire arms and since Batman is still a normal human you have to take them down silently, using stealth knock outs and various gadgets such as Batarangs and explosive gel. The thing that gives you the biggest edge however are gargoyles that act as perch points and Detective vision mode. The mode allows you to view the environment in a completely knew way, highlighting key points of interests, enemies through walls and such. It's useful, but almost too useful. The Thugs A.I isn't particularly fabulous as if detected you can simply grapple up to the Gargoyle perches and chances are they'll lose you. The game itself is pretty forgiving in that regard with Detective vision becoming simply overpowered at times.
When you're not beating people up you'll be collecting trophies and solving Riddles around Arkham Island left by...well you know. How he did it is a bit ridiculous but suspending your disbelief is something you just have to do with superheroes. Solving riddles unlocks concept art and character profiles of certain characters to the Batman mythos/ Rocksteady clearly did their homework in this regard even for the most minor characters you've never heard off. Although it's a bit easy and repetitive if you don't use your imagination it's still solid. 8/10

Story: This is your typical B level comic book story. After Batman returns Joker to Arkham Asylum,he stages a break out with the help of Harley Quinn and other villains, taking the entire place over while Batman desperately tries to stop him. The plots pretty basic and the writing won't win any awards but it's focused and works well. It'll also last you about 12 hours on normal difficulty. 7/10

Characters: Like most of the game every character acts like they should. Batman is an intelligent no nonsense vigilante,Harley Quinn is a ditsy psychopath and Joker is the hilarious kind of psychopath. Other minor characters like Commissioner Gordon are good as well. Bane is a bit of a lumbering idiot which he shouldn't be but I can over look it. 8/10

Sound: This game has some acting chops. Kevin Conroy as Batman,Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn and Mark Hamill as the Joker all deliver top notch performances with Hamill stealing every scene he is in. The Thugs and police sound a bit generic and bland but they're not the focus of the game so it's easy to look past. The music in the game has a creepy, faithful ambient sound to it that fits the Batman universe perfectly. 9/10

    Overall: 82. Great Game.

PRESENTATION: The game sucks right in and it feels you are in Arkham. The Scarecrow quests are a treat. What more could on ask?
GAMEPLAY: Ever dreamed to be Batman? Now you can. It's the best it can be said about Batman AA and the gameplay enhances it and embraces it. Beating bad guys never felt as good and as cool.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is the best 50 dollars I ever spent. I wasn't a gamer, played this, and now I am. Anyone who enjoys third person action/stealth games NEEDS to play this game. It's simply a work of art that has helped Batman regain his rightful limelight of the best superhero ever.

Great atmosphere, attention to detail, combat was glorious and the gadgets were even better. Best part for me is getting to a high vantage point and gliding all over Arkham. The areas are usually accessible from the outside but the areas are also ingeniously connected to each other through underground halls and hallways. When you progress through the game, you will get access to new gadgets at certain points, making it possible to explore deeper into the different areas. Its never completely obvious where you are supposed head the next which makes it all the more satisfying when you find a hidden path that will take you to a new area. Scattered around the island are also "question marks" and other objects hidden in well thought out places. These objects will reward you with a respectable amount of experience points which you use to upgrade your gadgets or to learn new attack moves. In other words, exploring the different corners of the island is always genuinely exciting.
The combat system works amazingly well and the many kinds of different attack moves makes for a really dynamic and challenging combat. The dialogue or more often monologue is really well written and the story is great.
When it comes to the graphics, all areas are very well designed. Unfortunately, most areas look very similar to each other and the colours mostly consist of different nuances of brown and grey. Overalll Batman Arkham Asylum is an amazing game.

It was strange for me to play this game because I had played Arkham City first and with that experience I began to notice the things that they improved with this game. The combat is slightly less fluid than in this and the story is more engaing in City aswell but this is still a class above almost everything else out there. A really great game.

One of the best and intense video game experiences I have ever made. It brought back exitement in gaming to me and had very unique moments (the first time with scarecrow as example). I didn't expect anything when I bought this, but it made me a huge fan of the dark knight

The Arkham series truly has the best combat in any game that I have ever played. That with a great storyline and other challenges got me addicted and I couldn't stop playing until I had solved every riddle, completed every challenge and in the end earned a platinum trophy.

Rocksteady succeeds in making you feel like you're Batman by mixing stealth, brawling, gliding, gadgets and detective work. The sights, sounds and voices bring the comics to life and there's great replay value. Sadly the enemies and bosses become repetitive, and those wanting an in-depth Batman story might be disappointed.

    Graphics:
Nice cartoony vibe with great character models, and a great atmosphere. The environments were gorgeous, and the arkham asylum mansion itself being a sight to behold. One gripe I do have with the game is that most of the thugs you fight have similar models. A little more variety in the models would have helped.

    Sound:
No complaints here. Joker being my favourite. Damn that sinister cackle.

    Gameplay:
Interesting action brawler, beat em up style gameplay, with a lot of riddle finding which was fun as many puzzles were interesting to solve. Some boss battles were kind of weak, especially recycled ones such as Bane, steroid joker, and big grunts. Also the croc fight was just plain disappointing.

    Solid 9/10 from me

There is so much going right for this game. The story is great, the visuals are amazing, the interactions between Batman and the various villains is great. There was plenty to do in this game, in terms of collecting and discovering backgrounds on characters in the game, it's a must play.

This can easily be the best game of this generation. it was great in many ways and gave a standard for the next AAA games to come. it has some little flaws, like the detective mode being overused, taking down the great graphics it had. Also a really mediocre end boss. if this details and its length were fixed, it would get a 10

Batman: arkham asylum was not only the best batman game ever made, it was also the best super hero game ever made. With a great story, great visuals, great voice acting and a solid gameplay makes Batman: arkham asylum a fun game for both batman fans and non batman fans (like myself).

Ok, first of all, I LOVE batman. When I heard about this game and all the hype behind it I feared for the worst. When I heard about this game and all the hype behind it I feared for the worst. There wasn't a good batman game in years but this one seemed to be the turning point not only for the bat, but comic book games alike. First thing you'll notice is the game looks beautiful, being powered by the Unreal Engine and all. Controls isn't something I touch up but these are like the most perfect controls for a batman game. The sound effects, music, and voice acting are all top notch. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their iconic roles from the animated series as batman and joker respectfully. The story was handled by Paul Dini, who also wrote the animated series, and what a story it is. The joker allows himself to get captured only to lure batman to arkham asylum, where he has a plan to take it over and get rid of batman finally. I won't spoil anything, but the amount of villains put into the game was pretty amazing. The stealth mechanics in this game and they way they make you think and use your gadgets accordingly really stand out because of the way it makes you feel like you're the one wearing the cape and cowl and not just playing a game. Most of the boss fights aren't really that good with one exception. The island itself is a pretty decent size, its not exactly open world, but its a go anywhere do anything kind of game. The amount of collectibles and challenges kept me coming back for more after the game was finished. Graphics slowdowns and pop ins are minor and kinda frequent but not game braking. Minor bugs in combat also keep the score where its at. Also the lip syncing is a little off but the story is so good you won't notice it until later. I personally think the game is kept indoors a lot with the amount of are they had to play with but its all forgiven with a great overall product. I feel that some level designs about halfway through the game are questionable as they affected the ammount of replay value the game had for me. All that being said, the good out weighs the bad. With a great story worthy of it's own comic book run, graphic novel, or even a movie, excellent voice acting, an incredible world filled with iconic batman villains, tons of gadgets at your disposal, and a perfect combat system this game truly does its best to make you feel like you are the freaking batman. This feels weird: my last game review on here was “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,” a game that I loved that happened to be based on a series I’m not super familiar with, nor am I too in love with. I’ve said it plenty of times before that my love for gaming as a whole is so big that I will not hesitate to play a game based on a series I’m unfamiliar with/not a huge fan of, if the game really looks great. Take “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” for example: while I’ve seen quite a few of the “Batman” films and enjoyed them (especially “The Dark Knight,” which is possibly one of my favorite films), I’m not deeply ingrained in the lore of “Batman” and, while I’m not the biggest superhero fanatic in the world, I tend to lean more towards Marvel than DC. You’d think I would’ve just ignored something like “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” but given that it’s one of the most critically-acclaimed superhero games ever, I wanted to give it a try. And sure enough, I absolutely understand all the love for the game.
Much of the hype around “Batman: Arkham Asylum” back in 2009 centered around how the game really lets you *be* Batman, but really, as much as it can be goofy to say that, it’s actually pretty true: Batman’s mechanics in the game, from his flight to his combat to his gadgetry, is so wonderfully-crafted to the point where you really feel like you really are Batman. The game as a whole builds on the foundation set by previous superhero games like “Spider-Man 2,” but adds its own fantastic and unique twist to it, adding in some heart-pounding stealth, clever puzzles, and presentation that feels true to “Batman” and his surrounding world. I think the visuals for the game remain great even after so long (and even after playing the remastered version on the PlayStation 4), the sound design is impeccable, the story and the writing just suck you in even if you’re not a “Batman” aficionado, and the voice work is top-notch. And the gameplay…wow, the gameplay. This game pulls you in and pretty much refuses to let you go: the combat is fast-paced and easy to learn yet challenging to master, the level design and creation of Arkham Asylum is pretty breathtaking and well-worth exploring, and the puzzles are challenging yet absolutely worth exploring. “Batman: Arkham Asylum” is the type of game you’ll find it hard to put down: there’s so much going on in it that gives it appeal to even those without much of an interest in the comics, world and lore of The Caped Crusader.
If I can make one comment about the game, and it seems like this has been said before, I think that the boss fights in the game are, for the most part, pretty bland and memorable only for the wrong reasons. Most of these fights become repetitive and stale all too quickly, relying on patterns that are all too similar and monotonous, to the point where they dull down the experience a bit. This really could’ve been an easy 10/10 had the boss fights not been such a weak spot in the game.
Nevertheless, “Batman: Arkham Asylum” has shown no signs of its age even after all these years, and it’s still a game that’s absolutely worth the massive amounts of praise that it’s received. Regardless of whether or not it’s still the #1 superhero game ever made, this game definitely sits in the masterclass of comic book video games, and it’s a game that even hardened, non-fans of “Batman” should play at least once. Rocksteady, way to do The Dark Knight justice.

The whole game is a class act. The fighting is sophisticated but arcade-addictive, the visuals are stylish, and the Lara-like exploration is smartly done. Plus the DC heritage feels all-encompassing like a big blanket. Arkham Asylum is comfortably the best comic book game that PlayStation's ever had, and is up there with the system's best actioners, full stop. [Sept 2009, p.95]
  2. Batman: Arkham Asylum is this year's "BioShock," not just from the connection established with the world, but from its ability to innovate where new ideas are needed, and moreover, deliver an adventure unlike any other. [Sept 2009, p.82]

Yes, this is the Batman you've been waiting for...It's a wonderful experience, beginning to end, never taking the easy or familiar route, and infusing each shift of the story with original ideas that cut no corners. [Oct 2009, p.70]
