The villains in the game are introduced over the course of the game and it really feels like everyone’s after you, so you have an uneasy feeling traversing the different buildings not knowing what’s waiting, Especially with the lunatics they freak me out. 100% this game recently and can’t recommend it enough. What it loses in terms of gameplay and open world compared to its sequels, Asylum makes up for with a simple but great story and excellent atmosphere. An amazing start to this game series and definitely worth playing even if you don't really like Batman that much.

Probably my least favourite Batman: Arkham game, but even that is telling of how good the series is. The combat, while not as good as the later games (understandably), is still fun, but its best quality is arguably its atmosphere. The only downsides are that the boss fights aren't amazing, and, while the story is consistent, it doesn't reach the heights of the games that succeed it - 8/10.

There isn't much that I can say about this game that hasn't been said. It is a (flawed) masterpiece. The story is great, Joker is peak here (maybe the best representation of him outside of comics), the combat is fun, and the setting of Arkham Asylum is just too fun!

My only two complaints about this game is the lack of enemy variety and backtracking. I played this game for the first time in 2022, and it holds up, but the enemy variety severely lacks, and the devs try to make up for it by just adding more enemies to encounters to up the difficulty. It does not make encounters more difficult it just makes late game fights and frustrating battle of health management. Back tracking is also a big problem. You will re-clear and go through each area 2-3 times in the game. It just isn't interesting. I'm sure there were technical limitations or limitations in how big the asylum could be in the logic of the story and world, it just didn't feel good.

One of my biggest praises for this game is the art direction. In 2022, the graphics obviously aren't amazing, but that is okay because the art style down to the architecture of the buildings makes this game beautiful even today. Art style will always be greater than graphics and frame rate.

My last big praise is the voice acting. Dear gosh, give Mark Hamill and Oscar for Joker in this game. Also, Kevin Conroy literally voices Batman for this game, it is just too perfect. From the moment I heard Hamill's psychotic monologue in the opening scene I knew I was in for a truly amazing Batman/Joker dynamic that actually gets their relationship. What a game!

It's arguably the first great superhero game, one that treats its source material totally seriously and delivers a rock-solid story alongside its fun gameplay. The mechanics of the title are practically synonymous with the third-person action genre now, yet they really are revolutionary. The game's familiar mix of combat, puzzles, exploration and stealth is handled remarkably well, each element feeling cohesive and hand-crafted for the caped crusader himself. The rhythm-based combat is snappy, satisfying and suitably violent. It's remarkably deep, with a number of unlockable skills and advanced moves, and the enemy design is varied enough to keep things interesting, especially when several types are tossed at you together and you have to strategically work your way across the battlefield. The combo system isn't just for show or, even, style; it distinctly changes how you play because several abilities are contingent on it, ensuring you feel rewarded when you achieve a high level of play. Even though he can take on tens of foes at once, Batman isn't a tank. When bullets come his way, he has to hide. This is where the game's predator segments come into the fray. These sequences have you sneaking around the asylum and taking out guards as you see fit, every gadget in your arsenal uniquely equipped to deal with a given scenario. If you're spotted, you'll have to retreat to a vantage point with your grappling hook; you can't withstand much damage. The AI is incredibly effective at conveying the fear you expect from someone stalked by the Dark Knight, with enemies erratically slipping from calm to agitated depending on what they see. These segments are highly engaging and provide a great counterbalance to the thing's otherwise more overt combat. Other than taking out bad guys, you're also tasked with doing some detective work. With your X-ray 'detective vision', you can track subjects and even recreate what may have happened based on evidence you find. For the most part, this stuff is fairly simple but it's really satisfying. It tends to progress the story in a very natural way and makes you feel like an active participant in the narrative. That narrative is fantastic, too. It makes excellent use of its source material, bringing its dingy version of Arkham Asylum to life with striking detail. It also offers up a sizeable, fan-pleasing rogue's gallery of villains to face-off against. From the intimidating Bane to the psychotic Harley Quinn, each baddie is as distinct and compelling as the last. The main attraction is, of course, the Joker. Here, he is simply phenomenal, bolstered by a brilliant performance from Mark Hamill. He walks the line between cruel and crazy, as jovial as he is murderous, and it's great to see. He's a suitable adversary for the imposing and stoic Batman, voiced just as well by Kevin Conroy. Everything just comes together to create a completely cohesive world filled with colourful characters and gripping gameplay. It's great. Plus, there's a whole set of side content which sees you solving the Riddler's puzzles. These mostly optional quandaries consist of either a physical test - in which you must use your gadgets to obtain a small trophy - or a mental one - which have you photograph parts of the asylum that act as answers to more traditional, typically lore-based riddles. The side stuff also includes a set of challenges based around the combat and predator encounters found in-game, which are instantly enjoyable and infinitely replayable. Chasing the high-score on these might steal more of your time than you expect, rounding out the overall package and marking it as one that's a must-play for... well, anyone, really. It's absolutely fantastic and is, still to this day, one of the best games of its generation. 10/10 Expand

Utilizing the Unreal Engine, the world of "Arkham" visually recalls "Bioshock" and the characters resemble the muscular soldiers from "Gears of War". Gameplay-wise, the game plays like "Metroid" complete with hidden rooms, scattered collectibles, optional objectives and backtracking.

The story was inspired by Grant Morrison graphic novel "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth". In the game, Batman spends an entire night tracking down the Gotham villains that have been broken out of prison by The Joker. The best aspect of the game is how it makes the player feel like the Dark Knight. It feels like a simulation since it cleverly integrates every aspect of the character (sans the Batmobile) into the gameplay. Both the stealth segments and combat mechanics are fluid and perfectly capture Batman's unique fighting styles. A cool aspect is Batman's cape that can be used in combat as well as flight, as you can use it to glide through the environments.

As players progress, Batman will gain different abilities that can eventually be upgraded. Traveling through Arkham never feels like a chore since repetition is cut down to a minimum. You're always discovering new areas and abilities, while the action moments are used sparsely to compliment the adventure feel of the game. Additionally, combat challenge rooms open up to test your skill if you just want arcade-style fighting. The PS3 version includes exclusive Joker challenge rooms which include attack moves unique to the Clown Prince of Crime.

Overall, this is a near-perfect "Batman" experience with an outstanding story, amazing visuals and terrific gameplay. At the time of its release, this game was a pleasant surprise since its developer had never made anything great before. I would "Arkham Asylum" with a 9.5 out of 10.

Surprisingly this was the best Batman game in at least a long time and many said you feel like you become Batman. It has an immersive story. It begins with Batman delivering the Joker to Arkham Asylum. Because the Joker did not even put up a fight for his standards he suspected that he has something up his sleeve. This will be a long an intense night for Batman. They nailed the atmosphere with the introduction by going into the Asylum alone. The story has many twists and intense moments. It is an intense roller-coaster ride full of emotions. You have a lot of Batmans rouges and countless normal but also dangerous criminals. The gameplay is exceptional. You have a lot of Batmans toys and will acquire new ones. The Batarangs, explosive gel and the grappling hook are powerful tools. You can use stealth and the environment to fullest capacity. It is so enjoyable to stealthy defeat one enemy after the other in a room without them noticing. Even more using gargoyles / spouters near the ceiling or hanging the enemies upside done. The fighting mechanics are also robust and you feel the impact. As you progress you get experience points and can unlock new abilities and upgrades. There are also combinations you can use in combat like moves and tools. There is also the useful detective mode. In this you use the scanning devises to solve riddles. It is also pretty useful outside of this. Then there are the great boss battles I wont spoil. Also the graphics and soundtrack are well done and help to deliver the dark atmosphere. There are a lot of challenges done by the Riddler. He places trophies in and around the Asylum for you to discover. Some are really hard to crack. While this is an awesome game it has one flaw. The climax or final battle while still good is underwhelming. It is a complaint by many. However the game itself is excellent and I will rate it with a 10/10 even with the underwhelming climax and will also say Arkham City is even better. Overall a positive surprise and one of a few licensed game that reach this level of success and acclaim. Expand

Expand

The combat is something I didn't really master until after I'd finished the game on hard, and progressed the combat challenges. On initial impressions most people will think this is a button masher, but it most definitely isn't. You have to be careful, strategic and precise to master the 40+ move free flow and perfect combo's. After getting 100% and the Platinum in this game I felt a sense of achievement, because the Shock & Awe extreme challenge is an actual ball ache. The soundtrack, story, level design, voice acting (Mark Hamill reprises Joker) and visuals are all on point. Brilliant game...

I’ve said it plenty of times before that my love for gaming as a whole is so big that I will not hesitate to play a game based on a series I’m unfamiliar with/not a huge fan of, if the game really looks great. Take “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” for example: while I’ve seen quite a few of the “Batman” films and enjoyed them (especially “The Dark Knight,” which is possibly one of my favorite films), I’m not deeply ingrained in the lore of “Batman” and, while I’m not the biggest superhero fanatic in the world, I tend to lean more towards Marvel than DC. You’d think I would’ve just ignored something like “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” but given that it’s one of the most critically-acclaimed superhero games ever, I wanted to give it a try. And sure enough, I absolutely understand all the love for the game.
Much of the hype around “Batman: Arkham Asylum” back in 2009 centered around how the game really lets you *be* Batman, but really, as much as it can be goofy to say that, it’s actually pretty true: Batman’s mechanics in the game, from his flight to his combat to his gadgetry, is so wonderfully-crafted to the point where you really feel like you really are Batman. The game as a whole builds on the foundation set by previous superhero games like “Spider-Man 2,” but adds its own fantastic and unique twist to it, adding in some heart-pounding stealth, clever puzzles, and presentation that feels true to “Batman” and his surrounding world. I think the visuals for the game remain great even after so long (and even after playing the remastered version on the PlayStation 4), the sound design is impeccable, the story and the writing just suck you in even if you’re not a “Batman” aficionado, and the voice work is top-notch. And the gameplay…wow, the gameplay. This game pulls you in and pretty much refuses to let you go: the combat is fast-paced and easy to learn yet challenging to master, the level design and creation of Arkham Asylum is pretty breathtaking and well-worth exploring, and the puzzles are challenging yet absolutely worth exploring. “Batman: Arkham Asylum” is the type of game you’ll find it hard to put down: there’s so much going on in it that gives it appeal to even those without much of an interest in the comics, world and lore of The Caped Crusader.
If I can make one comment about the game, and it seems like this has been said before, I think that the boss fights in the game are, for the most part, pretty bland and memorable only for the wrong reasons. Most of these fights become repetitive and stale all too quickly, relying on patterns that are all too similar and monotonous, to the point where they dull down the experience a bit. This really could’ve been an easy 10/10 had the boss fights not been such a weak spot in the game.
Nevertheless, “Batman: Arkham Asylum” has shown no signs of its age even after all these years, and it’s still a game that’s absolutely worth the massive amounts of praise that it’s received. Regardless of whether or not it’s still the #1 superhero game ever made, this game definitely sits in the masterclass of comic book video games, and it’s a game that even hardened, non-fans of “Batman” should play at least once. Rocksteady, way to do The Dark Knight justice.
Final rating: 9 out of 10 “Awesome”

    Are there any similar games?

The combat system is a lot like Shadow of Mordor. The difference is, I found the combat system in Shadow of Mordor to be more satisfying.

What did you think of the story?

I wasn’t overly impressed with the story. There was nothing special about it, Joker is crazy. Tries to do some some crazy **** and Batman stops him.

    Favorite Character?

I guess Batman is kind of cool in this game.

    Favorite Boss?

In my opinion, the boss battles were a little underwhelming. I guess the final boss? Juice up Joker was kind of tough but it took me 2 tries.

    Would you play it again?

No, I won’t be trying it again. At this point I’ll just move onto playing Arkham City.

    Any Complaints?

Don’t get me wrong at all, the game is not bad. Its just nothing special and nothing stood out to me. Maybe if I played the game back in 2009, I would be saying something different.

How many hours did you play it?

I beat the game in 1 day and it probably took me about 9 hours to go through the whole thing.

The whole game is a class act. The fighting is sophisticated but arcade-addictive, the visuals are stylish, and the Lara-like exploration is smartly done.
