Anyone looking for a hardcore flight sim should look elsewhere (preferably at a PC). This here's arcade action all the way, but it does that one thing extremely well.
-
The graphics will help draw you in, but the tight controls and mission advancement will keep you around.
-
A credible and solid outing, Top Gun is top fun if you have the patience to stick with it.
-
The landscapes, from the desert to the jungle, are good-looking, with enough differences in the terrain to keep it interesting. The change that the time-of-day makes on the environments is especially beautiful.
-
Theres often little tension, making the game feel less like flying in combat and more like running errands.
-
Graphically, Top Gun is neither "astounding" nor "very detailed." That's not to say that this is an ugly game, because it's anything but. However, the excessive amount of fog may make you think otherwise.
-
Whilst its general pace is unequivocally pedestrian and the missions are overly long and drawn out, Top Gun remains a surprisingly seductive prospect, albeit one devoid of significant exhilaration.
-
Couple limited instant action options with no competitive or cooperative multiplayer modes, and Top Gun: Combat Zones lacks the value and longevity of better games in its field.
-
Mediocrity and disappointment, the images that conjure up when thinking about Top Gun are intense action, pumping soundtrack, slick presentation and fun, unfortunately most of these cant be found in the game.
-
A game that won't bowl anyone over with deep gameplay and a compelling, cohesive storyline, but it's arcade sensability is strong enough to make it a decent enough diversion for fans of air combat.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineIt's the closest thing to an honest-to-God flight sim a PlayStation has seen. [Nov 2001, p.160]
-
It has all of the basic requirements of a good game in the genre, but it's just missing a soul.
-
Digital Integration has coded a lethargic, boring and snooze-inducing series of missions (about 30 of them) that are as unoriginal as they are predictably competent.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyThe controls feel sluggish and unresponsive, the difficulty balance is ridiculous. [Jan 2002, p.222]
-
The lack of competitive or cooperative multiplayer modes, decent AI, and sense of fair play will keep you away like everyone kept away from Ice-man in the movie.
-
Play MagazineId have enjoyed movie tie-ins as well, like Michael Ironside barking out the mission briefings. [Feb 2002, p.62]
-
The story isn't there, the gameplay is very boring, the graphics aren't good and the control will leave you craving for the blood of a programmer.

AndrewH.Aug 4, 2002Good graphics, but the controls are hard and frustrating, also they don't give a lot of time, not nearly as good as ace combat.
-
GabrichNov 29, 2003I had it and gave it away. I think it is the worst money spent ever. The only good are the graphics. All the rest is crap.
