Lara comes alive with intricately animated expressions, moves and abilities. An arsenal of modern equipment, such as a magnetic grappling device, binoculars, frag grenades, personal lighting device and communications equipment, allows gamers to experience tomb raiding as never before. Eidos and Crystal Dynamics shaped Lara's look and movements to be an inherent extension of her skills, motivation and personality. Lara's character model features natural structure, realistic textures, detailed facial features, reactive eyes and fluid motion, all of which make her part of a living environment. New character animations and controls allow her to move through stunning environments with grace and precision, while an understanding of the game's original appeal reinvigorates the fundamental explore-and-solve adventure experience. The improved graphics make all of the environments you visit look lively and beautiful, both in and out of the jungle and in and out of water. Lighting and shadows are done quite well and provide a very noticeable visual improvement over the last few games as is the audio.

The most important thing is that Crystal has recaptured what made the first "Tomb Raider" so fun: climbing through tombs, discovering artifacts, and piecing the puzzle together to find the solution. Archaeology is finally cool again. [May 2006, p.84]

Tomb Raider: Legend fails to be a reinvention of any genres, but succeeds in every way at reinventing itself. [May 2006, p.96]

Lara's reinvention outshines a game that's too slick for its own good - with better boss battles, more epic environments and taxing puzzles, it'd be a classic. [May 2006, p.40]

A huge, huge improvement over the last few wretched Tomb Raider titles. Prince of Persia fans should definitely take note.

Some may argue over what the series should have become, but what’s important is that it has made that tough decision for itself, and established a rock solid foundation for inevitable, now justified successors. [May 2006, p.86]
  7. Feel free to take Lara out for the weekend, but don’t go looking for a long-term relationship.

A massive improvement on the last one, the last 6 in fact. The new physics engine works great, you can really interact with stuff as if you were actually there. The story is exciting with lots of twists. Love the new mansion, it takes hours just to get all the rewards in there. There's a lot of outfits now, well over 30, all of which can be played in the mansion. The adventure isnt long but there's lots of reasons to come back, like the many rewards and time trials. There's even a ton of extra content to unlock. This game is an absolute must-have for everyone, an excellent return to form. Expand

This might just be one of the few ps2 games I have ever completed. Good puzzles, fun boss battles and an all over good atmosphere. I could do without the motorcycle and quick reaction stages that you are served between the levels tho. Expand

The movement is Certainly not ground-breaking like the early games, but enough of a challenge to draw you in and keep you going till the end. The movement is very fluid, the bike levels are not as bad as some people make out, and the ability to manipulate more of the environment is much more realistic. That said, the levels were very much straight lines, rather than the sprawling mazes that existed in TR1 and 2 (the great Karnak levels in TR4 also spring to mind) The linear nature and the relative ease (even on Hard) drag this down. But Tomb Raider is alive and kicking again. Expand

Only recently didLara Croft had always been one of the most iconic characters in my eyes. I grew up playing 1-3 repeatedly on my Playstation. Only recently did I begin playing games on my PS2 that came out a while back. Although I'm late I can honestly say this new Lara is amazing! Its a really fresh revival to the series. It's definitely different but it does feel like an original TR game
. The scenery was beautiful (even on the PS2) and the puzzles were interesting. Its a very friendly game to newcomers and it's, overall, not difficult at all. The game takes around 9 hours to beat, going at a solid pace . This may seem short but after the game is completed you can revisit each level to find hidden artifacts and complete time trials to unlock certain things like outfits or upgraded pistols.

This game is definitely a great addition to your collection and a great way to kick off the new Tomb Raider Trilogy.
