Why does the triangle man want to touch me? And why do the woman people have masks? And Also why does someone have 2 pairs of arms? This has been my review of the brand new Silent Hill 2. P.s. Not even Metal Gear Solid or other masterpiece series. Silent Hill 2 is probably best game ever made in entire univere. Too much detail in game.
Example: Mary was sick at hospital and monsters are inspiration from her. When the monster spread acid this was the Mary's bad words when she and James was at Hospital.. or The Nurses are James fantazy flirt things back in hospital. And of course Pyramid Head. He is the make James suffer. And Maria final boss. When she start choke James this was Maria pain at hospital. Like I said too much detail. And after 20 years some players finding something. Awesome Game. Awesome Soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka awesome graphics.

Note: I don't know why this game is not ''Metacritic Must Play''

That level of quality began very early on in the PS2's life, many of which were hotly anticipated sequels to games released back on the PS1. Games like Ace Combat 4, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3 and, of course, Silent Hill 2. SH2 is often regarded as one the greatest games on the system, one of the best horror games of all time and is considered the fan favorite in the Silent Hill series, and I certainly second that emotion. SH2 does what all good sequels mean to accomplish: keep what made the original great while also expanding upon it and even fixing issues that the original may have.

Silent Hill 2 was the first in the series to introduce the concept of Silent Hill as not just a town, but a mood. To have characters get drawn into this world based upon the personal demons of the people that enter it, and each one who does has a different experience. The story centers around James Sunderland, an everyday guy who travels to the desolate resort town in search of his wife. The problem, though, is that his wife has been dead for some time, but only just now was James given a letter written by her. So, James decides to go and get some answers. The game's story is incredibly dark, dealing with plenty of disturbing and mature themes, meeting characters that have their own issues and demons. Each of the monsters in the game is even specifically designed in a symbolic way that you wouldn't immediately get on a first playthrough. What makes the story particularly effective is the general uncanniness of the performances. Objectively, a lot of the voice acting would be considered bad, but in context of the surreal environment it helps add to the tone and atmosphere. Speaking of which, this game has a positively stellar presentation. The lighting and griminess of the game is pitch perfect, and it still stands as one of the best looking games on the system. On top of it all is its great sound design and stellar soundtrack.

Like the first game, SH2 is a survival-horror game where you explore different environments, collecting key items, solving puzzles and fending off different creatures. It's structured like a Resident Evil game, but with much less emphasis on combat and more on puzzle solving. The combat was certainly never the series' strong suit. It's incredibly clunky and there's not much reward in defeating them besides getting them out of the way. Of course, James isn't a trained operative so he's not gonna have much combat prowess. Luckily, it's pretty easy to avoid most encounters, and if you are pretty explorative you'll find more than enough ammo and health pick ups. One of the best features of this game is that it has separate difficulty levels for both puzzles and combat, so the game can be as straight forward or obtuse as you'd like it to be. There are also multiple endings that you can obtain by meeting certain requirements on subsequent playthroughs that range from depressing to hilarious.

SH2 is perhaps the definitive horror experience for the PS2. It's regarded as a classic for good reason. If you want to get into the series, you start here. A must have for horror buffs.

Much about Silent Hill 2 doesn't hold up however. The gameplay, excluding the puzzles (which are actually pretty good), is awful - combat, navigation, boss fights. Although i'd praise the atmosphere, this is mostly due to the visuals and setting, the sound design appears to just be a series of random uncoordinated sounds, that are so out of place, its not scary, but often confusing. The writing and voice acting is maybe worse - laughably bad most of the time. This is a big shame that distracts from could have been a far more compelling narrative.

I enjoyed playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time, nearly 20 years after release, because of how different it feels to games today, but honestly, the game's quality (beyond the obvious for a game so old at this point) is far below what i'd expected for a game still so revered. Its a horror game though, and in fairness, it still does horror very well.

Silent Hill 2 might perhaps be the greatest psychological horror video game of all time. Or at least, according to me as of now. My 2nd favorite video game of all time currently.

Silent Hill was already a great game but this sequel takes the series to new highs and creates one of the best PS2 games of all time. Everything about the atmosphere, fog, and story is spectacular and makes this one of the most thrilling narratives of all time. It does not relly on jumps scares but instead scares you psychologically with the very sinister Pyramid Head and a cruel protagonist as you find out throughout the course of the story. Up to this date, I have never found a protagonist as thought-provoking as this one and an antagonist more symbolic than Pyramid Head. The rest of the cast also played their roles in the plot to perfection. Another thing that is praise-worthy is the puzzles. They really made you use your brain to the limit.

I was really close to giving this a perfect rating, but there is one element holding it down. The combat is not deep. You just hit and shot stuff in a sluggish way. I think it fits the character as he is just a desperate guy in a nightmarish city trying to fight for his life with no training or experience whatsoever. But still, a video game is not just about the atmosphere, immersion, story, and music. The gameplay is always a very important factor. The puzzles and exploration were very polished but the combat was not. Making this a 9.5/10 and not the perfect 10/10.

[NOTE: This is a review for the SH2 HD in the "infamous" collection, since is not listed as an individual game this will do it for now, it has some technical issues that will not affect my score but I will talk about them a little, so I will try to be as objectively possible]

Silent Hill 2 is one of those games that have a lot of fame almost legendary and mythic, is easily to see why, from the very moment you start the game and you're on your own wandering a fogy woods with a creepy and unsettling music and ambiance you know you're for such a ride.

Let me start with my favorite thing so far from this game, the narrative, I love how SH2 doesn't shy away for being cryptic and almost "non-sensical" at times, you start with a simple premise of looking for your dead wife, but things are more complex than that, instead of giving you heavy exposition scenes (which maybe you sometimes get) you have blurry character development and some notes of paper, or diaries here and there which adds tons to the dreamy and oppressing atmosphere. You have a superb balance of cutscenes and gameplay, and for the most part you're on your own on the somewhat scripted openness of the map, which I like it quite a lot.

The combat is serviceable, its clunkiness adds to the theme of feeling underpowered by these unknown monsters, although at my first hours I was so stressed with my bullets and health management, once you understand the mechanics it will be hard to get a game over screen onwards, that's not to say that you feel safe whatsoever, the game manages to never truly let go your throat till the credits roll.

The primary horror aspect from a superficial point of view may be its enemy and environment design, the enemies if few are quite creative and gruesome, the locations are super creepy, they may look generic at first but certain details like lighting, enemy position, etc. make to stand out from the rest, although for me, the one that truly took me to the uncanny valley was the sound design and its music, there's a lot of noise and apparent empty music but you never feel like: "here's the normal enemy music" "now the boss music is playing", is deliciously stylish, even the more conventional music which plays to fit some dramatic scenes is beautiful, Akira Yamaoka is truly a genius.

The script, although is not a masterpiece, it fits perfectly with the tone of the game, at one moment you have a character acting cool and the next moment they're acting super crazy, but it fits, it has aged too good and better than other games of that era. At times the game can turn a little cartoony but again, being a horror game and as a lot of great movies of the genre it knows when to give you a break and be a little silly.

As for the negative aspects, I think that once you grasp all the mechanics the game can turn a little in the easy side, at least combat wise, at the start of the game you will find a couple of puzzles that may feel somewhat cheap, for example, you'll find a 6 pack of juice that to me looked like a health item so I saved it and didn't pretend to use till I really need it, turns out it was a key item that had to be used in an unnatural way to obtain other item, there are like a couple of instances of similar matter that didn't broke my experience that much but they were more annoying than challenging. Lastly, every time you open and close the map, everything around you i.e the monsters, will be moving but the screen will be black for at least 1 solid second, this is pretty annoying since it gives you a tremendous disadvantage in some corridors, and more often than not you'll be rewarded by an enemy hit, maybe this is an issue of the HD collection so I don't counting it to the score.

Speaking of the issues with the HD collection, overall the game looks OK, the fog effect is bad and some characters look a little soulless but is not that bad, the game has the option to play with the new or original voices, I played with both and as someone that is not tainted by nostalgia and is trying to be the more objectively possible I find that both are somewhat bad, although the new ones sound a little better and with more depth (not by that much mind you), definitely would prefer that this was in Japanese tho.

In general I loved my time with SH2 it was stress-full and filled with emotions to the very end, which by the way I didn't expect the ending to be this good, at least the one that I get, definitely recommended for every horror fan, it doesn't have cheap scares and its themes will have you thinking a lot.

Controls and mechanics are quite aged and I should have to give it a 7 if I have to rate it as a game, but no, because the story, music, atmosphere, design philosophy, psychological aspect and symbolism made up for the whole game. This is not merely a game, but art. A true work of art and masterpiece that fully deserves its reputation as one of the best games of all times.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't like Silent Hill 2 as much as the first game, mostly due to its depiction of the city. One of the possible interpretations of Silent Hill is that it manifests the inner desire of everyone summoned there to be punished for their sins. It goes against what the previous game established, since Harry and Cybil, who had nothing to repent for, were still able to see the monsters, unlike Laura. Maria's presence makes no sense either. In order to cause confusion and impact on the viewer, the game allowed several inconsistencies to exist. It's common to forget all the flaws of a game once you find yourself appalled by its final moments but, sorry, that does not work on me. It reminded me of Rule of Rose, although RoR is fairly superior in executing a convoluted storytelling that is up to interpretation while leaving no room for inconsistencies. As far as OST goes, the first game sounded a thousand times scarier to me... despite the same person working as composer on both. Overrated. Expand

The original game was amazing in every aspect. From story to the mechanics and game-play, events etc..
Then I made a bad decision of continuing right away, of course to finish the series was my intention.

This game is just awful. Also the storyline which has no relation just to the first game, but the town itself. The context was stupid and made no sense most of the time. You control a retarded guy who doesn't know what to do and does retarded choices at encounter cinematics, after where you control him through a retarded camera that forcibly stays looking at the wrong direction from wrong spot all the time. You're going through a retarded storyline that makes you say "wtf just happened" or mostly "why did he say that" all the time and makes you cringe, and there is not a single storyline choice you can make during the playthrough. The game forces you to go wherever you'd make progress, but not any other place, unlike the exploration in the first game, in this one you're stuck to the linear gameplay despite how open it looks. This alone prevents you from getting lost and scared in the atmosphere. The same example applies also with the indoor maps. You could only get in some doors where important items lie, and just few others with ammo and health leaving the remaining %80 of the buildings as inaccessible cosmetics. Also at those ammo and health, etc. items the protagonist locks his looks as soon as possible all the time, like a starving dog, prevents you from exploring stuff properly and makes the gameplay more blatant. The "few" major places you go are bluntly filled with unnecessary stuff. Riddles were nice but some required selective real-life knowledge, which also ruined the game. and at the end, to where you can make your way using a single damn pistol, you can kill the games 3 most powerful creature with a couple of hit by the giant knife, which you obtain without any kind of sacrificial gameplay back then, and couple of heals would suffice. The intense sound and graphical atmosphere of SH1 was also gone, replaced by few stain textures here and there, and most terribly, random voices that naturally makes you question your surroundings expecting something, but no they're just there for sound effects. I couldn't even know what reality I was in all the time. it felt like a terrible filler-episode of a tv series.

I was going to puke god dammit. IF anybody claims that this game was great, I'd suspect their mental health.
Only good thing about this game was the quality of riddles, and non-butchered controls.

I took a while getting around to writing this review because I had to think long and hard about how I'm going to actually put my thoughts on it into the proper words. And I'm still not entirely certain I got it nailed.

Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece. It's a game that puts the psychological aspect of horror into the spotlight. The game isn't so much terrifying as, say, Amnesia is, where the horror comes from shambling monstrosities out to tear you limb from limb (though there is still plenty of that). Instead, the game focuses on the human element of horror. The game understands that nothing will really terrify us more than ourselves. The game delves into subjects like murder, illness, and even rape within the main characters, and the game handles the themes surprisingly well. The game could've very easily come off the wrong way and ended up offending the entire known universe, but instead it explores these subjects in a masterful way that leaves an emotional impact on the player. It's a game that makes you think, and if you let it take you in, it's an emotional roller coaster that becomes impossible to forget.

Gameplay has never been Silent Hill's forte. The combat is sticky and unresponsive as always, but of course it should be. You shouldn't be a powerhouse with the murder capability of a COD protagonist. You're an ordinary man caught up in a nightmare he can't possibly understand. No, the story is where Silent Hill has it made, and by God the story here is so well presented and so beautifully written that I can't think of any game that excels it. Certainly some come close; BioShock or Red Dead Redemption, for instance, but none really hit the mark Silent Hill 2 did, even to this day.

You are James Sunderland, a man who travels to Silent Hill in search of his late wife, from whom he received a mysterious letter telling him that she is waiting for him, despite her passing three years prior. Faced with this mystery, James explores the town and confronts darkness, both in the metaphorical and literal sense, and horror around every turn. The game's story centers around the characters themselves, with what they see representing their own psyche, all of which are damaged in some way. James himself is haunted by symbolic representations of his damaged psyche, the iconic Pyramid Head being the most pronounced; a monstrosity wielding a really big knife that should probably just be classified as a greatsword at this point to save confusion.

The music and sound design is also absolutely phenomenal. The soundtrack by legendary composer Akira Yamaoka is just as iconic as everything else in the game, and the music instills the proper emotions at the perfect time, which melancholy strings at some points and industrial clunking and rattling in others. Everything about the game, from the environments to the music to the enemies, are meant to get under your skin and grab your heart and mind. Everything in the game has a purpose and is there for a story reason, these reasons you will uncover as you explore deeper and deeper into both the game and James as a person.

The game is dark. VERY dark. Its themes are outright horrifying. But at the same time, that's what makes it all so brilliant. It explores these subjects, these HUMAN subjects, and through the characters crafts a beautifully realized narrative that really sticks with you. Though the game isn't jump scare scary or Slender-esque ooh, I'm gonna get you scary, I'd argue if you think about it, it's much, MUCH more terrifying than that. It explores very human subjects, things that actually happen in real life. It explores the depravity that humanity can go to and the effects such things have on their victims, or even their perpetrators. It's an emotional roller coaster, with highs and lows that can really drain you. I actually couldn't play the game any more than 15 minutes at a time on my first run because of how oppressive the atmosphere alone was, And then when the game went and took turns so grim and unexpected, they felt like shots to the heart, and by the end of it all I was so emotionally exhausted that I had to lie down for a bit and think about my own existence and that of humanity as a whole.

The game really, REALLY stuck with me, the way very few other games ever manged since.

There's a reason why Silent Hill 2 is widely regarded as one of the best, if not THE best survival horror game ever made, as well as ranking as one of the greatest games overall. It's a game that makes you think. It's a game that makes you dread yourself more than any of the shambling horrors around you. It's a game about the human condition, and through its masterfully told and symbolic story, it really gets you pondering things that most of us don't ever want to imagine thinking about, and THAT'S why it's one of the greatest games ever made.

You basically have to look for her and to unravel your past little by little throughout the game to help better understand why you're even in Silent Hill in the first place. The follow up to the first Silent Hill contains similarities and differences in all the right places to ensure players guiding the protagonist through the eponymous town not leave without food for thought.

Remaining from the first Silent Hill is an improved take on its survival horror gameplay. Players explore the fogged town, survive its monstrosities, and solve a greater number of puzzles than ever before. Each element is tweaked to an ever higher quality, and considering the game's greater focus in immersing the players, the complete lack of a HUD serves to accentuate its mechanics which is designed to communicate an omnipresent feeling of dread.

Despite the much functional similarities, Silent Hill 2's differences from the first is what marks it as the magnum opus in the survival horror genre. This time around players guide James Sunderland, a man who traverses the town in search of his dead wife, only driven by a letter sent by her which is deemed impossible. I won't delve into further story details, but it is Silent Hill 2's greatest aspect and the reason to continue. The journey undergone by James Sunderland will send him through severely dark moments and one that expertly explores the human psyche without being blatant. It is a genius take and by the game's conclusion, you as the player will feel changed to an extent in addition to being exhausted. It is a draining experience that is both beautiful and dreadful as a result of its story points and how it conveys it to you. Not one moment is spelled out for the player, and much like the first Silent Hill, ultimately trusts the player in uncovering the town's mysteries and why James is there in the first place. It is much more effective and nuanced in its subtlety and themes, and stands as a hallmark in how to tell story in videogames.

Rather than a blanket of terror, this iteration communicates a greater sense of emptiness, and it works beautifully. Much of the time, players will hardly engage in combat, but rather walk the empty town and its buildings. When you do come across the town's monstrosities, they are disturbing in how unconventional they are. Gone are the blood and rust stained enemies of before replaced with creatures that are more intricately tied with the plot in hand, and serves to tell a player a story without words. James isn't totally alone in here, but the few souls he comes across contribute in allowing the player to learn the story at hand, while unmasking the themes tied to both James and the few people he comes across, sane or not.

Like the first game, Silent Hill 2's audio is a lesson in how to build terror. But this time around, the few musical tracks scattered throughout are masterfully crafted and thematically tied to its tone and feeling. The feelings of emptiness and melancholy is captured to a fever pitch by Akira Yamaoka, and this iteration is easily his best work. Some of these tracks will long remain in your mind by the game's conclusion and that is a testament in audio design congealing with feeling.

But among all things, Silent Hill 2 is still a horror game at heart, and while some may walk away unafraid at what the game threw at them, it was hardly a matter of conveying fear. Silent Hill 2's story wasn't one to terrify, but rather unsettle, not out of the monstrosities that inhabit the town, but instead what sickeningly dark secret and motives drew the player in the first place. It's explicit, but so overt that it's tasteful and well thought out. It's unsettling in the sense it guides the player not through a blood soaked hallway, but rather a hallway filled with symbolic apertures waiting to peered in. It guides you along while giving you no return till you finish what you started. It's a horror game that defeats you and allows triumph in scant moments.

In as few words as possible, Silent Hill 2 is a work of art, one that is symbolic and tied to design. It lacks any fun and enjoyment to rack any GOTY awards, but it is magnitudes higher in delivering an engrossing experience that will stick with you long after you have left the game. It isn't a sole classic in the horror genre, but games in general in providing a storytelling experience like no other. James Sunderland's journey through the eponymous town is wrought with stilted voice acting, long stretches of nothing, and cryptic messages, but every element crafted for this game has purpose, and everything fits so perfectly, including parts that appear to be flaws heighten the experience to perfection. Even returning again brings about new insights in addition to endings shaped by the player's actions in subtle ways. It's perfect through its imperfections. 16 years after its release, no other videogame has been quite as cerebral and effective.

Here we are 15 years after the release of this game and it is still my favorite game of all time. It tells an amazing story with some truly memorable characters, the gameplay is also still allot of fun, graphics still hold up really nicely on the PS2, Xbox and PC. Overall this game is a masterpiece.

Silent Hill 2 and proof of a perfect sequence. The Silent Team risked and landed and with a mature and rich history.
The game as a whole near perfection in all aspects.
My note to him and 10/10. For me and the best survival horror of all time.
if one day Konami is producing a new Silent Hill that reflects in the second game!

This was the first game I had ever played that made me genuinely uncomfortable whilst playing it. Everything about it rubs you the wrong way. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a true "scary" game.

I remember the first time I got my hands on this game after bought my ps2 back in 2003.

I was watching the CGI just waiting James to be playable, and inside that bathroom when the camera angle sets the third person view I was still thinking that was CGI… My brother thought it too, we looked at each other thinking that the game freezed, but then I touched the analog stick by accident and James moved… Me and my brother were like “Wooooow”…

I am an old veteran to games, and I never felt that sensation again, perhaps with Skyrim in my 360 which got pretty close, but I am a Silent Hill fan since play station 1.

Apart from the graphics, the story, the gameplay, which is not exactly perfect but it does its job, the story and plot are all tremendous…

I finished it 4 times, and I would play this game 4 times more if I would have time, but I have so many good games to play that I cannot do this, not now! Silent Hill 2 is by far a true masterpiece, some sort of rare jewel that you are not gonna find never again in the industry, it is pure genius, it is smart and emotional, visceral and subtle, soft and heavy, carry tons of feelings and iconic characters… Silent Hill 2 is by all means possible, the best game ever made not because of it is quality as a game, just like I said it is not perfect. It is the best game ever made because you really enter the town, you feel like you are in there, without 3D glasses or the new VR technology, without all the actual gen possibilities with these sandboxes like titles... It is just psychological frightening to such a level that makes you wander the meaning of every inch explored in the game...

Es una poesía gamer, el mejor Silent Hill y uno de los mejores juegos de todos los tiempos. Lleno de simbolismos y significados, invita al jugador a sacar sus propias conclusiones en vez de otorgar la historia en bandeja.

    Intro:
Silent Hill 2 is a difficult game to write a review on. Silent Hill 2 might be mediocre in the gameplay department yet it has one of the greatest narratives in gaming history. Silent Hill 2 is a survival horror game developed by Team Silent and published by Konami. When Silent Hill 2 came out back in 2001 it was lauded by critics as one of the greatest video games of all time. The question today is whether this game still holds up. I am going to try and answer that question for you.

    Presentation:
Overall Silent Hill 2’s graphics mostly hold up today. The CG in the game especially in the intro cutscene is expertly done and even looks photo-realistic even today. Some things in the game did not hold up as well such as the water effects and the look of some in game cutscenes. Silent Hill 2 focuses on a more dark rusty dilapidated scenes compared to Resident Evil’s original cartoony campy style. The game looks absolutely amazing especially in the original PS2 version. The game also features an amazing soundtrack that compliments the excellent visuals. The game features great ambient music that will bring a chill to your spine and sound effects that will make you uncomfortable. The only problem that I have with the presentation is the fact that if you are playing the HD version the game is far darker and harder to see compared to the PS2 version. In order to complete the HD version I had to turn up the brightness on my TV to a higher level which allowed me to see better but made the game look washed out. Silent Hill 2 by far has some the best atmospheric design I have ever seen in a video game. Overall Silent Hill 2 has excellent presentation excusing the HD collection.

    Story:
Silent Hill 2 has one of the best narratives in gaming history. I will not spoil the story because the game is worth playing to experience this narrative alone. The story follows the main character James Sunderland who receives a mysterious letter sent by his dead wife beckoning him to the town of Silent Hill. The story does start out slow which is standard in the genre of psychological horror but picks up fast after the slow start. The game also features some of the best characters I have seen in a video game. The game also features multiple endings including two joke endings. I will not spoil the endings but it is by far one of the most emotional game endings in gaming history excusing the joke endings.

    Gameplay:
Silent Hill 2 uses the traditional classic survival horror gameplay style. It uses clunky tank controls and simply combat. Unlike Resident Evil’s combat Silent Hill 2 features more melee weapons than long distance guns. The gameplay also features many puzzles. Many fans of the series enjoy the puzzles and gameplay but I feel that it is inadequate compared to the brilliant story and absorbing atmosphere. The gameplay gets very tiring and repetitive by the end of the game. Luckily, the game is not too long or short. Silent Hill 2 gameplay is just decent enough to make it pass this category.

    Technical:
Silent Hill 2 suffers from extreme problems in the HD port the version I played. After checking videos on youtube comparing the footage from the original and HD the original is by far the better port which I would recommend. The HD port is marred by the lack of fog at key moments and off lighting which makes the game look too dark which made have to turn up the brightness on my TV. The HD port also suffers from extreme audio problems including missing sound effects sometimes distorted audio during CG cutscenes and and audio syncing problems which I experienced during a crucial moment of the game. The original port does not suffer from next to none technical problems but the HD port is another story.

    Overall:
Silent Hill 2 would traditionally be considered a bad game but its story and presentation put it in a league of its own. I will giving the HD version and the PS2 version two different scores because I feel the technical problems with the HD port are too glaring. Silent 2 is worth more than the sum of its parts and Yes Silent Hill 2 stands the test of time.

    Original: 10 HD: 9

  1. While Silent Hill 2 retains the same basic format of the original, the story is decidedly more coherent and the graphics have been upgraded immeasurably.

Quite simply, mature PS2 owners craving a creepy game that's perfect for playing with the lights out and speakers cranked, pick up a copy of Silent Hill 2 and you will not be disappointed. Clean underwear not included.
  3. The game is one of the longer offerings Konami has offered on PS2 to date...[but] you'll still be left wanting more when the game is over.
