This game's lovely graphics are the only thing that kept me from giving it a zero. The story is extraordinarily dull, the controls are too difficult, and the world of SOTC is a lonely, depressing place.

Wow. This game is bad. I have no idea what all the fuss was about. I tried to play it twice once on the PS2 and once again on the PS3 when the collection came out. There is nothing interesting going on here you ride a horse and climb on top of a couple of big monsters. I think i would have more fun watching someone play a bass masters fishing simulator.

Shadow of the Colossus is a unique game with a VERY beautiful aesthetic. BUT the camera is so atrociously bad as to make the game unplayable. It makes any attempt to play the game an exercise in frustration. It's always attempt to move itself back to where "it" want to be, not where you need it to be. Just trying to walk up a winding path along a mountain side takes extreme patience. Otherwise you'll step off the ledge and drop down. Sometimes killing yourself accidentally. And when you get into a situation where it REALLY matters, like attempting to climb to where a colossus is located, or even worse, in the middle of a battle, a single erratic jump of the unpredictable camera can mean an hour of battle time is lost, and you have to start from scratch (including the frustrating climb to reach the colossus in the first place).

Bottom line: Unique and distinctive game. Just be ready to deal with the hideous camera.

The horrible camera work made me give up on the game within 30 minutes of starting to play it. I have no idea why people are so enamored with this game as I've never been so frustrated when starting a game. Just awful.

A deeply flawed game where you spend more time LOOKING for the colossi then actually killing them. With no storyline, no plot and a character who runs like he's missing a leg makes this game a total bust. On top of all that there is almost NO dialogue, it would be worth it to rent it but definetly not for buying.

Sloppy framerate, lackluster gameplay, predictable plot, and horrendous programming (esp. audio). Possibly one of the most overrated games in the last decade. Unique concept, yes. Does that classify the game as great? Hardly. Do yourself a favor and skip this one. I can only imagine how much Sony payed off the review crew to hype this garbage.

How are people raving about the graphics? They'd be fantastic with some antialiasing, less mip-mapped textures and triple the polygon count. Your outfit is a giant square with rough edges and some color. Your poor horse's tail is a triangle, for god's sake. The backgrounds aren't terribly inspired and the ground looks like something a 4th grader painted in art class. How are people raving about the graphics? Perhaps its because I played the game on a high-def TV and Sony's official antialiasing policy is "let your TV do it". If anything, the graphics are the *worst* part of the game. The gameplay itself is inspired, the storyline (although a bit weak) keeps you interested and the graphics aren't so bad that they ruin the game...but it had a lot of potential and sadly fell flat on the technical side. The background music was incredible and the graphics are probably the best ever to come to PS2. However, the story was really strange and how you fight the colossi is weird. What this game needed most was just more people. I mean, It's basically only you. If there were smaller, more numerous foes, I'd give it an 8.

The music is nice, but repetitive (how come the music clip for a colossus fight is only 30 seconds long, when the fight is guaranteed to last 15 minutes?), and the translations from the Japanese are straight out of an early 90's NES game. And the games boss battles are really the highlight of this game and very well done provide a very good and a unique experience. All that being said SOTC is not without its problems first of all the game's story is not that good you would expect a game like this to have a better story the game just throws things at you in the beginning without any knowledge of whats happening no background of the characters and their story which is very important in a lot of games. You bring your dead girlfriend to a place where Dormin a Demon or Entity tells him to kill 16 Colossus to revive his girlfriend which does not make sense first of why would the main character believe Dormin so quickly and how can be trust that Dormin is doing this to help himself and just listens to him and agree to kill the 16 Collosus. Sorry to say but the story could have been presented better the player should have been let in more in the background of the characters and even the Collosus and why they need to be sacrificed it would have just added to the game's story and made the players understand the story better and get into the characters but the lack of backgrounds and information just kills that connection. The controls could have been assigned better as well the controls for riding the horse and running around is fine but when it comes to climbing the collosus and using the bow arrow the games controls are just messed up and they cause some problems and frustrations during the boss fights which kind of hurt the overall experience. My main problem with the game is the long travelling to find the Colossus all that could take really long and get boring using your sword to find your destinations does not work so well and it could be misleading just increasing the amount of time you spend looking for the Colossus it would have been so much better if the map was just marked with the destination. I would not have had the problems with the long travelling if the place had some life forms in the areas that could have made those long rides less boring and fun to an extent. Since this game is marred by these problems it is not perfect so therefore I do not think it deserves the reception it got it is being called an amzzing master piece, greatest game of of the last generation, greatest game of the decade. I do not think this game deserves any of those merits because it is just not that amazing or mind-blowing it is not even the best game on the PS2 but that is just my honest opinion. Still in the end I would like to say that SOTC is a great game which provides a very different and unique experience which no game can be compared to it was nice to see the developers try something this brave and different not worrying about falling flat of their faces and getting negative criticism but just trying it sure the concept of this game before it came out sounded really tedious but its nice to say that the developers managed to take this different and unique formula and made a great game out of it. 8/10. Shadow of the Colossus is an open world action adventure game that starts out with you carrying a lifeless body into a temple.
You’re there in hopes of bringing this woman back to life, and are told it is possible, but you must collect the souls of these 16 beasts that roam the land
this is one giant world with nothing but boss battles.
The open world in Shadow of the Colossus is extremely bare compared to what were used to now from games like the witcher 3,
The landscape is fun to explore and traverse through on your trusty steed but I found it all to be very harsh on my eyes, there are some gorgeous sections of this world, but my eyes for some reason couldn’t adapt, making it all seem like a blur to me.
In this world there is nothing but save points, lizards that you can kill to increase your grip, and fruit you can eat to increase your health.
I appreciate the open world, but the stars of the show are the Colossi
You’re tasked with defeating 1 at a time, you’re given a hint to their location and can hold your sword up to the sun to point in its direction, you aren’t given a mini map, but you can pause to look at your current in game location.
Once you get to the right location a cut scene introduces your foe.
Every colossus is different, you’ll fight sloths, turtles, eels, giants, birds, and the list goes on and on.
They all have a trick to defeating them, no 2 the same. Once you’ve tricked the colossus into a vulnerable position you can then climb it and attack its weak spot with your sword, it sounds easy, but it’s not,
There is a lot of vertical platforming, but there’s an attempt at realism with your grip. You have to time your attacks and resting perfectly or you risk falling off of the colossus and have to start the climb again.
Every time you defeat a colossus your grip grows stronger.
And grabbing has its own command, making the action feel even more immersive, if you let go, your character lets go.
    You’re also given 2 weapons
Sometimes the colossus needs to be irritated with a bow before it attacks you or you can attack it.
The game will give you subtle clues if you get stuck, but ultimately the game leaves the problem solving up to you.
And this isn’t a dig at God of War because I love that game, but I really wish developers should stop copying God of War style bosses and start copying the bosses in Shadow of The Colossus.
These are the greatest boss battles I’ve experienced in a game period.
Some of the creatures are massive, and there’s a dash of problem solving and trickery.
Admittedly some bosses felt like the standard, defeat the games algorithm, but for the most part I felt like I was outsmarting my enemy rather than simply going off of an in game cycle
Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most immersive games ever and a must play for all.

This game clearly doesn't deserve a 0 in any way, and i cant believe people hand out zeroes just out of spite for the ten's give it a rank that's appropriate for gods sake. But anyway, this game is one of my favourites of all time. The simplicity and emotiveness previously seen only in Ico, let's be honest, is really developed here. Once i had completed the game once and had a great experience, i tried again, but i really explored the landscape, finding whole plains and areas that you don't even need to go near, but are just so breathtakingly real its satisfying to just ride through them and look at them. The formula is so simple, and yet never gets boring; search for colossus; kill colossus; reappear at temple. Repeat. It takes quite a bit of problem solving to work out where the colossi are, and how to take them down, but i never once got bored or annoyed at it, i just used my head. I did use a guide once or twice, for the bits that really fry your brain, but the irritation immediately subsides when you realise just how clever the solution was. Every single colossi is cooler than the last, and just get better and better. I'm on my 6th or 7th play through the game, and i still havent managed to scale the temple wall to get to the secret garden and the bridge, get every peice of fruit, every lizard or kill all the colossi on hard time attack! You dont even have to do this stuff for replayability, just the nostalgia and joy of roaming the world is incredible. All in all, a masterpeice of a game. Expand

There are fruits in the trees. Both heighten your life bar and the amount of time you can hold on to things.

But I agree, on first glance, there really isn't much to do. But boy, is there much to see. I read a review somewhere that said it was like taking a vacation, and really, that's what it felt like for me. In between taking down the massive colossi, I spent time just looking at what a world it really is. I don't need little side quests or whatnot, and the game still takes 15 hours to beat for most players. So $20 bucks isn't bad for that. I've played it 4 times through (and that's just on normal difficulty). It's not that it's different; it's art. It's not meant to be bombastic or over-the-top (although it seems unlike that due to the gargantuan nature of the colossi). It's meant to be enjoyed by not only its gameplay but also its beautiful landscape. I love tons of action in my games as much as the next guy. I have my Resident Evil 4, GTAs, Hitman 2, Burnout 3, Max Payne 2...but there's nothing quite like the ethereal beauty of Shadow of the Colossus. Absolutely jaw-dropping. And if you can find the hint guide (or just look this up online), and you can find a TON of extras on the game (white arrows, white Agro, some Ico tie-ins). Just extra stuff that makes it just a little more exciting. There are some definitely unnecessarily difficult boss battles (like the one in the water...with the teeth-looking crown you have to crawl up...whatever. too much to explain. if you played the game, you know which annoying piece-of-stone-lard that dude is).

So buy it. Enjoy it. Wait a few weeks. Start the process over again. You won't regret it, unless you don't like progressive art.

Besides the amount of drama and the love, the vastness of the map, the graphics and the greatness of the bosses. There are details that makes this title can't reach the perfection: 1) There are no small creature to slain while reaching the colossus 2) No risk between the battles other than dying of starvation trying to find the colossus. I think Agro must not be so smart so I can fall of the cliffs when I get distracted. 3) The forbbiden land it too forbbiden, this way you'll never find anyone living. It could be cool if the game makers gives you intermediate task like helping a man to reach the entrance of the forbbiden land. 4) There is no day cycle, i think the gameplay could be beautiful in moonlight, I am amazed only by thinking of riding Agro (the horse) over the dunes at moonlight... This has got to be one of the best games I have ever played. The silence, the isolation, and the lack of objectives may not be everybody's cup of tea but for me its what made this game so brilliant. Everything about it is just so unique. A true masterpiece.

A lot of the criticism for this game seems ill warranted. Some say the graphics are bad, but why are you comparing a PS2 game to current gen releases? Some say the graphics are bad, but why are you comparing a PS2 game to current gen releases? You say the game is boring and repetitive in nature. What do you do in FPSes besides shoot people? You say there's nothing to do besides kill Colossi. What's wrong with a game containing only the best part of action/adventure games (boss fights)? I don't understand how people can say the game is boring in nature since, "All you do is find weak spots and kill them." because any game can be boiled down to such simple principles when you think of it like that. Each boss fight is an interactive experience. If you honestly feel like taking down the first colossi (which was a simple "climb up top and kill him" task) was the same as the 8th (where you used diversionary tactics to defeat him) or the 9th (where you used geysers and the landscape to ascend), then you are a misguided fool. Each experience is so inherently different from each other. To say they're the same simply because you utilize the same toolset (sword/arrow/horse) is as ridiculous as it is ignorant. I can, however, understand the criticism about such a sparse landscape with little to do. However, that's the game's intention. To make you feel empty and alone and place greater emphasis on navigating your way to the boss and defeating him rather than to distract you with other things. If that's not your cup of tea, so be it, but accept that it's not and don't criticize the game because of it. That's like playing a racing game and saying it sucks because you find racing to be boring. Well, maybe you shouldn't be playing a racing game then. That doesn't mean it's a poor racing game. It means you don't enjoy racing games. Shadow of the Colossus is far from a poor production. If you didn't enjoy it, it's because it's not something you'd enjoy. Not because it's a bad game. Learn to accept that and don't criticize it for nonexistent faults. Expand

This game is a pretty good game. The action in the actual gameplay is probably the only part of the game that is liked, but that accounts for alot. You honestly don't understand @#$% of the plot though and aren't really put into the story. To sum it up, the action of this game is fun and not finding the colossus. Also the story isn't presented well

A very good game, and a lot of fun. I don't know about best of 2005, I'd give that honor to Resident Evil 4, but, this game is totally unique and fun. Really breathtaking landscapes and the battles with the colossi are a lot of fun. I love the "wtf?" factor when you fight one of these guys. I just wish there was more to finding them and a harder battle once you do find them. You shine your sword, follow the path on a poorly controlled horse, and then fight it. Repeat 16 times. I think the battles would've been more meaningful and the journey to find them more interesting if there were some sort of puzzle, button to hit or something else to it. I do love the fact that its just you, your horse, your sword and bow though. No +3 augment silver sword of divine justice + might boosting and regeneration junk to clog up your inventory that can somehow hold enough equipment to arm a small nation. With that aside, it is still an addictive and beautiful experience and well worth your time (maybe 8 hours?). And the music is incredible as well. The Zelda creators REALLY need to play this game. Imagine this game as a zelda title where you get this type of vast and incredibly detailed environment instead of Waterworld Pt. 2. Expand

An excellent game with a few minor quirks. I found that it wasn't until I played it on hard mode that I got the experience the game originally promised. I found this game pretty superior to God of War, but perhaps a close contender for game of the year with RE4. Hopefully it runs like a charm when I get a PS3.

one of the prettiest looking games that i have played for the ps2. the landscape design is vast, perfect, and beautiful. Now why didn't square enix did something like this to the ps2 FF games?! The character graphics are flawed up close. The puzzles here are about getting on top of the colossus and hitting its weakpoint. The gameplay is kind of repetitive but still enjoyable. since one of the prettiest looking games that i have played for the ps2. the landscape design is vast, perfect, and beautiful.
