The horse moves its head and body just like a real equine, I galloped around it circles for a while, amazed at the way it moved. Possibly the strongest element of the game is the score. The music is exhilerating and heartbreakingly beautiful throughout the game, right up until the emotion filled ending. It's a must buy for anyone who can appreciate games that aren't all about guns and gore. Also, the graphics are clearly pushing the PS2 to its limits. And that's without even touching on its awesome gameplay. The physics of the characters movements is great. Its like the Gran Turismo of action games. But mainly, I must say that the tone, the mood it sets is exactly what I think most gamers are looking for. Its completely opposite of our world. Think "Legend", kind of mixed with Legend of Zelda. That's really the only way to put it. And the list of great things just goes on. I'm giving this a 10 partly because it is one of my favourite games ever, and partly because I'm getting really annoyed at people who give games that are clearly good in some way 0's. This game clearly doesn't deserve a 0 in any way, and i cant believe people hand out zeroes just out of spite for the ten's give it a rank that's appropriate for gods sake. This game clearly doesn't deserve a 0 in any way, and i cant believe people hand out zeroes just out of spite for the ten's give it a rank that's appropriate for gods sake. But anyway, this game is one of my favourites of all time. The simplicity and emotiveness previously seen only in Ico, let's be honest, is really developed here. Once i had completed the game once and had a great experience, i tried again, but i really explored the landscape, finding whole plains and areas that you don't even need to go near, but are just so breathtakingly real its satisfying to just ride through them and look at them. The formula is so simple, and yet never gets boring; search for colossus; kill colossus; reappear at temple. Repeat. It takes quite a bit of problem solving to work out where the colossi are, and how to take them down, but i never once got bored or annoyed at it, i just used my head. I did use a guide once or twice, for the bits that really fry your brain, but the irritation immediately subsides when you realise just how clever the solution was. Every single colossi is cooler than the last, and just get better and better. I'm on my 6th or 7th play through the game, and i still havent managed to scale the temple wall to get to the secret garden and the bridge, get every peice of fruit, every lizard or kill all the colossi on hard time attack! You dont even have to do this stuff for replayability, just the nostalgia and joy of roaming the world is incredible. All in all, a masterpeice of a game. Expand

Whether a beach, forest or desert, all areas are well realized and worth the effort of finding them. That said, more interactivity, or gameplay opportunities, would be appreciated. For instance, a facade built into a mountain featured two holes leading to an enormous cavern. I should have been able to enter but couldn't and actually got stuck in one hole swimming like a fish out of water. Maybe later there's a colossi to kill inside and I'll be able to enter but right now it just seems glitchy and an arbitrary limit to exploration. There are fruits in the trees. Both heighten your life bar and the amount of time you can hold on to things.

But I agree, on first glance, there really isn't much to do. But boy, is there much to see. I read a review somewhere that said it was like taking a vacation, and really, that's what it felt like for me. In between taking down the massive colossi, I spent time just looking at what a world it really is. I don't need little side quests or whatnot, and the game still takes 15 hours to beat for most players. So $20 bucks isn't bad for that. I've played it 4 times through (and that's just on normal difficulty). It's not that it's different; it's art. It's not meant to be bombastic or over-the-top (although it seems unlike that due to the gargantuan nature of the colossi). It's meant to be enjoyed by not only its gameplay but also its beautiful landscape. I love tons of action in my games as much as the next guy. I have my Resident Evil 4, GTAs, Hitman 2, Burnout 3, Max Payne 2...but there's nothing quite like the ethereal beauty of Shadow of the Colossus. Absolutely jaw-dropping. And if you can find the hint guide (or just look this up online), and you can find a TON of extras on the game (white arrows, white Agro, some Ico tie-ins). Just extra stuff that makes it just a little more exciting. There are some definitely unnecessarily difficult boss battles (like the one in the water...with the teeth-looking crown you have to crawl up...whatever. too much to explain. if you played the game, you know which annoying piece-of-stone-lard that dude is).

So buy it. Enjoy it. Wait a few weeks. Start the process over again. You won't regret it, unless you don't like progressive art.

Besides the amount of drama and the love, the vastness of the map, the graphics and the greatness of the bosses. There are details that makes this title can't reach the perfection: 1) There are no small creature to slain while reaching the colossus 2) No risk between the battles other than dying of starvation trying to find the colossus. I think Agro must not be so smart so I can fall of the cliffs when I get distracted. 3) The forbbiden land it too forbbiden, this way you'll never find anyone living. It could be cool if the game makers gives you intermediate task like helping a man to reach the entrance of the forbbiden land. 4) There is no day cycle, i think the gameplay could be beautiful in moonlight, I am amazed only by thinking of riding Agro (the horse) over the dunes at moonlight... I don't understand how people can say the game is boring in nature since, "All you do is find weak spots and kill them." because any game can be boiled down to such simple principles when you think of it like that. Each boss fight is an interactive experience. If you honestly feel like taking down the first colossi (which was a simple "climb up top and kill him" task) was the same as the 8th (where you used diversionary tactics to defeat him) or the 9th (where you used geysers and the landscape to ascend), then you are a misguided fool. Each experience is so inherently different from each other. To say they're the same simply because you utilize the same toolset (sword/arrow/horse) is as ridiculous as it is ignorant. I can, however, understand the criticism about such a sparse landscape with little to do. However, that's the game's intention. To make you feel empty and alone and place greater emphasis on navigating your way to the boss and defeating him rather than to distract you with other things. If that's not your cup of tea, so be it, but accept that it's not and don't criticize the game because of it. That's like playing a racing game and saying it sucks because you find racing to be boring. Well, maybe you shouldn't be playing a racing game then. That doesn't mean it's a poor racing game. It means you don't enjoy racing games. Shadow of the Colossus is far from a poor production. If you didn't enjoy it, it's because it's not something you'd enjoy. Not because it's a bad game. Learn to accept that and don't criticize it for nonexistent faults. Expand

Really breathtaking landscapes and the battles with the colossi are a lot of fun. I love the "wtf?" factor when you fight one of these guys. I just wish there was more to finding them and a harder battle once you do find them. You shine your sword, follow the path on a poorly controlled horse, and then fight it. Repeat 16 times. I think the battles would've been more meaningful and the journey to find them more interesting if there were some sort of puzzle, button to hit or something else to it. I do love the fact that its just you, your horse, your sword and bow though. No +3 augment silver sword of divine justice + might boosting and regeneration junk to clog up your inventory that can somehow hold enough equipment to arm a small nation. With that aside, it is still an addictive and beautiful experience and well worth your time (maybe 8 hours?). And the music is incredible as well. The Zelda creators REALLY need to play this game. Imagine this game as a zelda title where you get this type of vast and incredibly detailed environment instead of Waterworld Pt. 2. Expand

An excellent game with a few minor quirks. I found that it wasn't until I played it on hard mode that I got the experience the game originally promised. I found this game pretty superior to God of War, but perhaps a close contender for game of the year with RE4. Hopefully it runs like a charm when I get a PS3.

In taking on the role of this game's hero (who really is a hero for seemingly being so normal while standing against such overwhelming odds) I found myself sucked into a very living world that would exist and go on existing whether I saved the day or not. And, unlike most other games, nothing was ever allowed to clutter or take away from the pure experience of the game itself. If anyone ever wanted to know how it may have felt to be a legend-in-the-making from ancient mythology (ie. Hercules and his 12 labours) while not already knowing the tale or needing to adhere to a cumbersome and jarring system of hitpoints or character development (and, ultimately, a whole bunch of filler to give a sense of the "epic" in that the video game odyssey simply took a long time to complete), never before has a game captured the feeling and the atmosphere of a myth so well and with such vitality. Simply put, the minimal aspects work wonders if you let yourself play the role. And you need to think like a normal guy taking on giants to be successful at this game. This is not a game to be conquered more than an experience to lose one's self in. And, somewhat like in life itself, it's not for those who need to know the answer to every question "Why?" to be satisfied. Beautiful if not a little arduous at times, but aren't all legendary tasks every once-in-a-while? A game that rewards the mind... if you care to use it a bit more than you would for most games or movies. This game is epic in that it makes you feel so small. Absolutely unique. Expand

Shadow of the Colossus is a beautiful art game that understands how to strike a balance between its interesting narrative concerns and engaging gameplay. More impressively, it knows how to use the mechanisms of its medium to reinforce these thematic concerns.

You become excited by the chase and anxious by the scale of your encounters with the vast, beautiful creatures whose destruction forms the central mechanism of the experience, but more atmospheric elements--the diminishing certainty of purpose, the proximity to the forbidden, and the sense of isolation --become tactile experiences, as well. When Wander's grip fails, and he tumbles down the flanks of a living mountain you've spent the past half-hour learning to kill, you share his exhaustion. When the final blow dims the iridescent eyes of the colossus, your relief at the end of the struggle is a physical one. On the other hand, you also share the futility of Wander's attempts to outrun the consequences of his victory...

Even the repetition of the central game mechanic and the sparse diversion between boss fights, which first struck me as weaknesses in execution, seem, on further reflection, a central component of the experience. This is a bleak place that you've come to, and your purpose becomes a grim one. While rewarding is a somewhat unqualified term to use for this game's unique intentions, Shadow of the Colossus will certainly return your investment.

the story is fascinating and amazing use your sword to kill the colossi and bring back your loved one. and yet no matter how hard the colossi was and how mad i got whenever i failed to kill it i always felt a sadness when it crashed to the ground in its death. it's not something many games or movies have been able to do often.

my favorite part of this entire game is the soundtrack. i love music and i love good music in video games and movies but this game has arguably one of the best soundtracks in a video game EVER it is absolutely beautiful i have never played a game that switches the soundtrack mid bossfight which it does when the game knows that you know how to kill the colossi. it goes from slow and mysterious to high paced and EPIC. it is just astounding and i loved every moment of it.

Shadow of the colossus is a gaming masterpiece and one of my favorite PS2 games, it was highly innovative for the time and has a wonderful atmosphere where you feel immersed in an empty world with only a few colossal beings roaming around. It really does deliver considering the limitations of the PS2.

¡ Qué obra de arte ni qué leches ! Este juego es, ante todo, una obra maestra de la programación en tiempo real. A este tío le tenían que poner una estatua. ¡¡ UN JUEGO ENTRE UN MILLÓN!! Expand

Just no words for this game... It's a Master Piece, one of the most phenomenal, amazing games that I ever played. And the mystery behind the story and the game itself... just wants you do know more and more about the game.

Progression through Shadow of the Colossus occurs in cycles. Beginning at a central point in an expansive landscape, the player seeks out and defeats a colossus, and is then returned to the central point to repeat the process. To find each colossus, Wander may raise his sword while in a sunlit area to reflect beams of light, which will converge when the sword is pointed in the right direction of the next encounter. The journey to a colossus is seldom a straightforward matter: stretches of varied terrain often require that a detour be taken along the way. Most colossi are located in remote areas, such as atop cliffs or within ancient structures

Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played. A well crafted masterpiece. The story is engrossing, deep, and emotional. The gameplay is not the the greatest, but it works pretty well. And the graphics are solid. Play this game with the HD version if you have a PS3, If you're on PS4 though, you'll just have to hope for a remake or remaster to the current-gen.

Excelente. Hasta el día de hoy no hay ninguno que se parezca en su estilo (quizás haya, no lo sé(?)). El mundo está muy bien logrado y se nota la calidad en cada uno de sus aspectos.

Beautiful ambient, sometimes, i like to hang and travel around rather than go for the colossus. The only awful thing it was the Horse control. Recommended for anyone who has got a PS2 or a PS3

The original SOTC was a bit wonky with its animations and terrible motion blur. But it has such a gripping narrative and game-play loop that it kept me playing

absolutely one of the most well designed games ever created. the attention to detail is absolutely astonishing. the music is **** epic. the colossi are terrifying, and a treat to take down. i like that it's not just about climbing up the bastard and then being done, nah you gotta think, use your environment, they're all a little diifferent

I have to give games that introduced something never done before and just knocked it out of the park. It could have had more story, but that would have taken away form the allure of the unknown. A wonderful new approach to combat mechanics. You must play this game once. Probably in my top 10-15 games of all time.

If you can appreciate artistry in games, if you hanker for an experience that transcends genre, if you want to see what happens when a creative design team is allowed to ignore sales numbers and flavor-of-the-month trends, by all means bring yourself into Shadow's world. [Oct 2005, p.98]

A truly unique experience that inspires emotions in a way few games can. It has its share of problems, but I love it just the same. [Oct 2005, p.130]
  3. It's unlike anything else you've ever played, and so you may love it or you may hate it. Count me firmly in the "love" boat. [Nov 2005, p.142]
