It's fun for a while, but the lame objectives and lack of power-ups soon make this a chore. It's about time this franchise was buried under some rubble. [May 2006, p.68]
  2. The formula was never that good to begin with, and shiny new graphics, tons of new monsters, and a host of unlockable moves simply cannot hide the fact that Rampage, no matter the generation, is a bore.

Midway's got a decade to think about what they want the 30th anniversary Rampage remake to look like. Here's hoping they get it right then.

Repetitive and dull retread of a once okay game. [May 2006, p.89]

Sadly there’s no traditional one-on-one mode, so players aren’t given the chance to inflict heaps of damage on one another.
  6. Many lackluster games have spectacular ideas but poor execution. Rampage: Total Destruction, on the other hand, has the same gameplay it's had 20 years ago, offering only negligible upgrades.

Still, even at a budget price, it's hard to recommend this game to anyone but the most hardcore of Rampage fans...if they even exist. [July 2006, p.78]

You would think that they could have done a better job than this. A free roaming 3D affair – think GTA but with a giant – wouldn’t have taken a whole lot more effort, and could actually have been an amusing little distraction. Instead, the developers have opted for half-assed 3D, and it doesn’t do the game any good at all.

The core gameplay in all its monotonous glory is, unfortunately, entirely preserved, and while no one can deny the appeal of trashing pricey downtown real estate while noshing picture-snapping tourists and tossing trains, if you play one level you've played them all.
  10. It's just not fun yet. Sure, playing against people is a mild diversion, and it has a small amount of nostalgic appeal, but if they want to come up with something that's sold entirely on the basis of the fun of destruction, destruction has to be more fun than this.
  11. Those with a sadistic streak will enjoy hurling cars, gobbling victims and belching. But players will quickly tire of the repetitive button bashing required to raze buildings and swat hapless enemies.

Even a budget price point can’t counteract the tedium that quickly sets in from the limited gameplay.
  13. The game’s best feature is its inclusion of the twenty year-old version of Rampage, which is actually smarter, deeper, and just plain better than Total Destruction. That's sad. Flee in terror.

This game is for those who want to get into all the parts in Grand Theft Auto and Simpsons Hit And Run where you can just run off destroying This game is for those who want to get into all the parts in Grand Theft Auto and Simpsons Hit And Run where you can just run off destroying buildings, and it's for those who are just so mad and frustrated and want to tear things up...this game is decent and the graphics are nice. There are tons of more characters and not just 3. But I must admit, this game would not be worth $40 so they put a good price on it. And the fun gets more fun if you use the cheats which you can figure out on www.gamefaqs.com. The game will have you playing for a long time or a short time. It all depends on how you play it.
