Rotatable camera angles, a variety of weapons (albeit they're all arrows), and a good mix of puzzles and action made this game entertaining....in an Archie Comics sort of way.
-
Although the plot keeps it afloat, the lack of any variety will quickly wear on most gamers.
-
While the multiplayer mode's forgettable, and there's not a ton of replay value, the first run through the story is surprisingly long, and filled to the brim with some of the most amazing scenery conceived outside of a Toy Story film.
-
Your enjoyment of Portal Runner depends wholly on your tolerance for both straight-up, albeit slightly watered-down, 3D platform-adventure gameplay and 3DO's distinct brand of abstract patriotism.
-
The platforming design and gem collecting feel like the sort of gameplay one would expect in an old-school game--and I don't mean this as a compliment.
-
Several shots short of a 21 gun salute.
-
It sits squarely in the middle of fun and boring.
-
Think of this game as Tomb Raider Lite-it features a similarly obnoxious control scheme in a much cheerier universe.
-
Likely the best non-Air Attack game that I've played in this widening franchise, and while it's still far from a game that I'd recommend, it's a step in the right direction.
-
There are flashes of progress to be found in this title, and if 3DO continues to build upon Portal Runner's shortcomings, there is a possibility for a truly decent Army Men game in the future.
-
Unfortunately the game is not going to be any kind of a challenge for the more seasoned PS2 owners amongst us.
-
Vicki is no Lara Croft and unfortunate[ly] for 3DO she's not even close.
-
With rough textures and flat prerendered backgrounds, Portal Runner looks like a late-generation PlayStation title rather than a second-generation PS2 effort. It plays even worse.
-
The game is saddled with the same lackluster gameplay that has plagued the entire Army Men series.
-
3DO, you cannot trick us, this is ANOTHER Army Men game, now vying for the Lara vote with a feisty new heroine.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineIt's clunky and frustrating due to its awful controls. [Nov 2001, p.160]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyThe game will keep youngins busy, but if any gamer over the age of 10 gets stuck playing this thing, well, thats gotta hurt! [Nov 2001, p.210]
-
It's got some nice CGI and a few neat lighting effects here and there, but with control issues, lame multiplayer and boring level design it's pretty obvious that the curse has struck again.
