A fun beat-'em-up with controls that are a little too complex for the game's own good. It's neither a great fighting game, nor a super shooting game. Despite the pain and agony I went through in Oni, I was compelled to keep playing. Chalk it up to good action, I guess. Or self torture...
-
The plain graphics and cookie-cutter objectives can make some of the levels drag a bit, but the storyline and the sheer size of some of the game's levels make the whole package easier to swallow.
-
While the control system is well thought out, it can at times infuriate as you desperately scramble around trying to reel off rounds into your enemies, while running from them.
-
It's just that Bungie was obviously trying for an ambitiously epic, innovative game with a distinct style and a hip, futuristic plot, and almost none of those new and unique elements work well.
-
For all the complaints you can level at the game--serious though they might be--the fact remains that the combat controls are well designed, and kicking ass in this game is incredibly entertaining.
-
There's nothing like watching a hot chic beating the crap out of a couple guys.
-
Despite expectations, many gamers will find themselves disappointed by Oni's frustrating gameplay and lack-luster presentation. However, Oni is not a total loss, and succeeds at moving us one step closer to a true three-dimensional representation of classics like "Streets of Rage."
-
It's more a rehash of "Fighting Force 2" than anything else, only with a half-cyborg chick at the helm instead of the typical Rambo/Duke Nukem character.
-
TotalGames.netOverall, Oni is in no way without merit, it is just not original or exciting enough to keep your attention for long. As a PSone game, perhaps we would be a bit kinder but for a next generation title, there is nothing more frustrating than bland mediocrity.
-
Had the control scheme been less complex and easier to learn, that would have gone a long way toward fixing the problems.
-
Don't believe the hype.
-
The over complicated controls and bland level design ultimately eat away at the rest of the achievements.
