Sony’s NBA 08 is a solid basketball gamebut the actual gameplay isn’t as tight as its competitors. The lack of a franchise mode hurts the game and while The Life is still plenty of fun to play through, it may not be enough to pull the game up for most people.
-
The main reason to play NBA 08: The Life v3 is not to play a basketball game but to get involved with The Life. If you're wanting a good "basketball" game there are better options.
-
In NBA 08, on the PS2, the controller response sometimes feels a bit unresponsive and the animation gets a bit jumpy, especially when switching from ball carrying to dunking.
-
Unfortunately the game suffers from frame rate issues that were not present in NBA 07, thus effectively hindering some of the fun factor.
-
This year, if you want to play NBA '08, you'd better make sure that's a Sixaxis or a PSP in your hands. You're not going to have a whole lot of fun with your DualShock 2.
-
Flawed defensively, with unrealistic problems and uninteresting game modes, NBA 08 is the culmination of three years of neglected improvements of the basics of the sports franchise.
-
NBA 08 is still a decent alternative for anyone who wants a little something different from a basketball game, but it's mostly the same as last year's version.
-
The AI is not that intelligent and the lag in the control scheme needs work. But as this is a port that will not see too many more iterations, you will have to make due with what it allows.
-
While you certainly can have fun with NBA 08, it’s hard to recommend it as a purchase.
-
NBA 08 for the PS2 may be the last time we see The Life on the PS2. Unfortunately Volume 3 just felt too familiar to the last two outings, and we're expecting much more for the third game in the franchise.
-
Compared to last year’s game, differences are few and far between. Story mode is deeper, with new challenges and one or another improvement.
-
The PlayStation 2 version of NBA 08 is nothing like its PlayStation 3 counterpart. This one fails in nearly every aspect, largely due to poor attention to detail in visuals, awful A.I., and a severe lack of new features.
-
But now that the series is fully established, the gameplay seriously needs to do some catching up to the competition.
-
If this truly is the end for our old friend, it ain't the way we'd want to see anyone go out. We all deserve better.
-
Ultimately, it would be best for Sony to probably ditch the PS2 version and concentrate on making the actual basketball game solid for the PSP and PS3 versions next year.
-
"The Life" mode is intriguing, but unfulfilling, and although different, not worth the purchase price on its own. There are simply NBA games that look better, play better, and have more to offer fans than this game provides.
