  1. The simplicity of it all combined with just a touch of humor helps make Mister Mosquito a title well worth taking for a spin or three.
  2. A really fun game with great music, solid graphics, and a good degree of difficulty, but its very basic gameplay and lack of options doesn’t give it a whole lot of staying power.
  3. One of the most creative and original games to come out in recent months, most notably because it does not rely on any single preset established genre and yet it is still a very appealing title.

The game's structure is surprisingly rigid. [Summer 2002]

The more weird sh*t, the better, I say...The game's creative premise, it's brave completion, and the phenomenal amount of laughter (sexually tinged or not, it's really how you see it) and fun to be had here shouldn't be ignored.

I must admit that I enjoyed nearly every minute of my pesky abuse...just don't expect to play it for long. [May 2002, p.28]

The game is undeniably unique and entertaining, not to mention deeply in need of polish.

The sluggish controls make it hard to maneuver Mister Mosquito from avoiding hand slaps, insect repellent, and everything else that’s thrown at you.
  9. I’ve never really seen a game that so obviously and yet so hilariously heaps on the innuendo. Sucking blood is such a thinly veiled euphemism that you can’t help but laugh at the fact that someone actually made a game like this.
  10. Playing through Mister Mosquito for the first time is a unique and memorable experience, well worth a weekend rental if not a full-price purchase.

There is something to be said for this title due to its pure outrageousness. [Apr 2002, p.77]
  12. Though a little slow at times, unique gameplay at incredibly quirky characters will provide plenty of entertainment. Depending on how you play, you could be in for a remarkable stealth game or a tense, action packed crusade against your giant prey.

Taps that bizarro vein and sucks it dry, with funny (intentionally and otherwise) voice acting and quirky characters. [May 2002, p.108]

The game has no replay value, is too flawed to be a worthy addition to your collection, and can be easily finished in a little under 2 hours. It could, however, give you a fairly entertaining afternoon’s worth of gaming.
  15. A thoroughly original title that brings to a new audience, through parody, a touch of what makes Japanese culture so appealing to so many Westerners.
  16. Whilst it doesn’t offer an epic adventure the gameplay is solid enough to offer gamers a good gaming experience for a few hours.
  17. Without the uniqueness of being a blood-sucking mosquito this game would be a clunky action/flying hybrid that'd be closer to first-generation Dreamcast software than PS2-caliber material.

An exercise in strangeness and quirky appeal. If only the game were a bit longer and the graphics better. [Apr 2002, p.63]
  19. The poor maneuverability of Mister Mosquito seriously shrink-rays that already little fun, and makes the game a lot more frustrating than it ought to be. Fresh, though, you've got to give it that.
  20. Sadly, Mister Mosquito is brutally linear in its gameplay. You cannot land on your victim and just start sucking - you must find the one or two hot spots or it's no go.
  21. In short spurts, however, the game is a total riot.
  22. It is a frustrating, extremely short title with ugly graphics.
  23. 40
Even the parodic nature that was attempted here falls flat after a couple plays, leaving you with a husk of a game that could have been great.

I'm honestly surprised the ratings for this game are so low. This is easily one of my favorite PS2 games now. I played through this recentlyI'm honestly surprised the ratings for this game are so low. This is easily one of my favorite PS2 games now. I played through this recently with a few friends under the assumption that it was bad and would give a few laughs and that's it. However, I was surprised to find myself genuinely enjoying the game more and more as I played through it.

The game controls quite well and I very rarely had any moments where I struggled with them. The issue is they don't really tell you any of them in the game itself so you have to either look at the manual or figure them out yourself. I did the former of the two. It controls like a space shooter, somewhat similarly to Star Fox, and I think it suits the game surprisingly well. The objective of the game is very simple; just flying to the correct points of a character's body and sucking them until you pass the stage. I think the controls make this really fun though.

When the game started, I found myself laughing at all the characters for how odd they were, but by the end of the game I felt a genuine connection with them, which I was not expecting at all. In fact, by the end of the game, I almost felt bad for having been fighting against them the whole game. I find the whole family really charming and likable, ESPECIALLY the father, Kenichi. You can tell how much effort the voice actor was putting into his lines, and I think that really adds a lot to the character.

The game isn't without it's flaws though. Without giving anything away, some stages feel pretty unfair and you have to be really careful and precise to avoid getting killed. I did find myself able to create strategies that allowed me to pass any hard stages I ran into though, so I wouldn't say this hindered my overall experience much at all. Another thing is the game is fairly short, which may be a turn off for some people. I personally think it's better suited as a short game as I think it has a lot of replay value, so this didn't hinder my experience much either.

So overall, I think this is a great and heavily underrated game. It's incredibly charming and, while it can occasionally be difficult, I found myself having more fun than not. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to play some obscure PS2 titles.
