This game had many critics for a specific character that we all know, but at no time was the creator's bad idea, on the contrary, a success that was rewarded over the years. Very charismatic characters and a careful history from beginning to end, what we had to expect from a saga like metal gear.

A great game with smooth gameplay. The only downside is having to play with cartwheel heavy Raiden.

The plot of the game seemed really thick and intriguing, but now it comes off as a bad conspiracy theory meant only to rope you in to the next video (think Alex Jones) or in this case the next game. Now I realize that the writer/creator Hideo Kojima put this plot twists just to play with you.
Speaking of the plot, it mostly deals with dated Cold War politics and deals out generic corporate/ military jargon, and it all adds up to a giant agile robot that supposedly shoots nuclear missiles. But can be destroyed by a single guy with a rocket launcher. This aspect has especially aged poorly since a nuclear launch may very well be launched from smartphone tech. To be fair the giant robot thing is steeped in Japanese culture, especially in old films, but putting it in a spy game just doesn't seem to work well.

The controls are terrible and I can partly attribute that to the terrible broken X-Box controller with its dead spot analog sticks. You'll end up hitting the wrong button and fall to your death, and have to do a section of the game totally over.

The game introduces poor characters, then has no problem disposing of them quickly. Its supposed to be emotional, but after playing MGS1, MGS2 and MGS4 you realize that its a way to do the same thing over and over again.

The gameplay takes a backseat to endless exposition and codec dialog that feels like it never ends (hence endless). Believe me it goes on and on and on.

Then there is the midsection of the game where you hold E.E by the hand and escort her while trying to be stealthy

Introducing the "stealth" mechanics part of this game: After playing for a while, you start to realize that the enemies wander in a ridiculously simple repetitive pattern making getting around them very easy you just have to wait for the right moment. BUT WAIT DERS MORE. Actually its easier to just tranque them and cheese it, by leaving the section and returning. If you don't, there are points in the game where you'll by instantly spotted by enemies because its so unclear where thy are. Yes a lot of places are well done but some are so poor its worth mentioning.

I know i complained a lot here, but there is some fun to be had so its not all a lost cause.

Alright now I don't think this game is bad and its better than I give it credit for but I just think its okay. Much like its predecessor the games plot and themes are interesting to talk about but also like the first game and even more so than the first the game play is hindered and underwhelming in comparison> Also the bosses kinda suck except for the last one he was pretty cool.

I first played this game on PC many yrs ago and thought it was ok. Recently replayed it on PS3 and now I remember why it didn't do much for me at the time, unlike the masterpiece that was MGS1.
Story isn't that interesting or captivating until the A.I twist, but then it ends.
Gameplay was just boring, from bomb disposal to babysitting Otacon's sister to destroying a small army of Metal

Gameplay was just boring, from bomb disposal to babysitting Otacon's sister to destroying a small army of Metal Gears it felt like a job, just plain dull and uninspired, much like the design of the Big Shell, where most of the action develops. Boss fights were pretty weak too when compared to its predecessor.

MGS2 is probably the most controversial game I have played. Not because of shocking content (Although the story did scare people back in 2001) but because of the huge backlash to the main character Raiden.

MGS2 is probably the most controversial game I have played. Not because of shocking content (Although the story did scare people back in 2001) but because of the huge backlash to the main character Raiden.
This was my first MGS game so I didn't know much about the plot of the first only a synopsis my cousin told me before starting but even then I knew Snake was this badass character from the opening cutscene, I knew whilst playing the Tanker section when I was 6 that this game was special and couldn't wait to see what the Plant chapter was about. And like many others I too was confused and frustrated about Raiden and the story when I beat it for the first time.
It wasn't until around 2013 that I replayed MGS2 through the HD Collection and since then I'd say MGS2 is probably one of the best games I have ever played as I always look forward to this game every time I marathon the series every year.
But what makes MGS2 so special is a story that seemed confusing back when it released but is now a fantastic tale of patriotism and how we as a society are governed by an age of technology, the plot was seriously ahead of it's time and even now serves as an important story in video games for it's commentary on current events.
The gameplay is also oddly immersive as I'm a sucker for dynamic HUD's that fade in and out depending on the action of the player, this allows enviroments like the outside of the Big Shell to really show their beauty and for an 18 year old game MGS2 still looks fantastic regardless of whether it's on PS2 or the HD Collection.
I'd urge anyone with an intrest in early 2000's gaming to at least play MGS2 as it's still a masterpiece after all these years and to me was Kojima's Swan Song for storytelling so far but who knows Death Stranding may take that position.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solid 2 is a must-play for anyone wanting a riveting experience. MGS 2, unlike its predecessor, doesn't waste its time on re-introducing its world to the new generation... Instead, it blows us right through it. This is a game that needs all your attention and believes in you respecting its different exercises. Throughout MGS2 all i was thinking about was what business raiden has to do with this mechanical world, a character filled with life, emotions and questions is thrown into a computer stimulation of an otherworldly phenomenon. MGS 2 broadens our understanding of the Metal Gear world and with an all memorable richly composed epic soundtrack, it ends a saga or chapter in this universe. MGS2 feels like an end but one that is deserved and respected because it didn't waste its resources. Truly a masterpiece that deserved all the attention it gets:, 10/10 Expand

The importance of a game that, without spoilers, takes the scariest step possible after the massive success that its prequel was, is without a doubt remarkable. Kojima could have made another Snake adventure and write the tale of the hero everyone wanted to see, but he taught us all to look beyond, to see that stories aren't made just to be cool and epic, but also to spread the ideas that could shape better future generations.
Not to mention the amazing step it was in terms of gameplay and unique details that no other game could offer at the moment.
