Metal Gear Solid is an absolutely remarkable series. The first MGS game is the first title in a very long time that I remember wanting to play again immediately after finishing it, and I did the same with this one. The soundtrack is fantastic, from the actual music, to the way the guns sound to the sound of footsteps; all amazing. The graphics were stellar for the time period. The soundtrack is fantastic, from the actual music, to the way the guns sound to the sound of footsteps; all amazing. The graphics were stellar for the time period. The gameplay is some of the best I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. There are however, a few minor detractors for me:

1: Raiden. The popular complaint. I just didn't like his character. Over the top annoying and emotional.
2: (Spoilers): The Metal Gear Ray boss fight. Not difficult once you know what to do, but so horribly repetitive.
3: The dialogue between Raiden and Rose is just...so unnecessary and cheesy.
4: The story at times feels convoluted, but it's actually really great in my opinion.

That's really all I can say that is negative about this game. It is one of the greatest games I have ever played. With that said, I know these games are not for everyone. I, however, absolutely love them and that's why this game, as well as the first MGS, both get 10's from me.

This game is a real trip. Strange and cheesy, it still manages to be really cool in its execution. The spltting of the story is a powerful choice, but hasn't been seen by many fans as a good one. Raiden, who at first seems like an excuse to create a more anime-centric character, comes into his own rather quickly. He has a personality and style all his own, but still controls like Snake in the long run. It might as well be a skin swap.
Having played this directly after the first Metal Gear Solid, a few aspects of this game stood out as improvements, and others detracted. A great improvement was made to gunplay, which was clunky on the directional pad, but shines a little brighter on a stick. The character movement is better as well, allowing for various speeds of stealth. One thing that caught me a bit off guard was the enemy ai, that at times seems very sensitive, and at other times they are dull as rocks. It's a frustrating thing to often trudge through the trial and error, but I feel like this was done on purpose to create a greater sense of urgency. Like most of Kojima's games, it is pretty genuine in its design. It allows itself to be more than what you see, and this installment adds more depth and sophistication to an already established system. There is an "epic" atmosphere, even in confined halls or battling ridiculous bosses.
The conspiracies run deep in this one, and at first glance the plot is a bit of a cluster but a person willing to pay attention will find a detailed tale full of political intrigue and mystery. Even the inclusion of the oddly named "Solidus" wasn't so bad. The controls are a bit dated now and some practice is needed, but it shouldn't be a problem for someone committing to a good time. This is the real dividing point in the series, you can take it or leave it. It doesn't capture the same charm as the first, but its attention to detail is so strong it outplays many games even now.

This type of cool happenings is why im enjoying buying these odler games now..

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty improves upon Metal Gear Solid in every way. Despite this, from a modern viewpoint, the gameplay is clunky and is sometimes frustrating, especially in certain boss fights. This game is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. It brings you closer to the real life post-traumatic stress disorder and the plights of child soldiers; something the other MGS games never truly touch upon or explore in depth.

Raiden as a character brings nuanced and surprising depth to the narrative that is unmatched across all MGS games. This was the only time I felt MGS shuffled off its fantasy coil of nanomachines and outlandish pseudoscience and went dark and gritty ... real to its core. The gameplay is localized and doesn't deter the player away from the main narrative.

Everything, from design to plot to game mechanics, adds to the overall package. If you are a fan of MGS and miss out on this, then I would consider it a grave error. If you are a gamer and decide to skip this, then I would call it a terrible choice. And if you are an MGS fan and dislike it, then I will outright question your gaming aesthetics.

All in all, this is an experience to be felt and lived through a Magic Circle. Raiden's tale, for all intents and purposes, is the pinnacle of Kojima's craft and is meant to be experienced like an avid story reader and a zealous gamer.

The main theme music in MGS 2 is my favourite score.

The Tanker level lets you play as Snake and is the Prolouge to the main mission that features a new hero named Raiden that you will play as in the Big Shell mission, this doesn't mean Snake isn't in it after the Tanker because he is using a false code name called Plisken (Homage to Snake Plissken in Escape from New York) but later he reveals to Raiden he is Solid Snake. The Big Shell mission is set two years after the Tanker incident where Metal Gear Ray was being made, the oil has spilt into the sea and a huge clean up facility called Big Shell has been created around it.

Raiden (At first using the codename Snake) enters the facility when he gets a call off Colonel Campbell saying his codename has been changed to Raiden, his objectives are to infiltrate the Big Shell and rescue the President, Raiden then discovers that his girlfriend Rose is on this mission as the Data annalist. Once in the elevator Raiden is told that the group that has took over Big Shell are called the Sons of Liberty and the leader of it all is the legendary soldier Solid Snake but it can't be THE Solid Snake because he was killed in the Tanker two years ago. This is the reason why Raiden's codename was changed from Snake to Raiden.

Of course neither is true because Snake is disguised as a navy seal with the name Plisken so the leader is someone using Snake's codename, it also seems a group called Dead Cell (Similar to Special Forces FOXHOUND) are in Big Shell, they all have their own skills, Vamp has the skills to dodge bullets and run on water with quick speed while also drinking blood like a Vampire, Fortune has the power to reflect any projectile fired at her and Fatman has the the skill to create bombs. Also their is another Cyborg Ninja that is in Big Shell and is using the codename of Mr. X.

Ocelot is also in Big Shell working with the leader of the Sons of Liberty, the leader is Solidus Snake one of the clones from Big Boss and is Solid Snake's brother.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is a great game with a superb plot that is full of twists. This is a game that should be played. 10/10

This is probably the best ending of a game I've ever experienced. A really good experience from start to end!

As you can expect from an old game, the gameplay in the game might not be the best, with a bit weird controls. It's a really hard game for that matter because I felt like I had to play around the controls, so to speak, angle myself and be prepared for much more instead of just aiming and shooting. Some boss battles forced me to stand in a certain position and try to aim where I knew he/she would stand (I might just be bad at the game). I also felt that the tutorial was a bit uninformative in some cases, but it was easy to figure it out when trying out different ideas (like the cockroaches). I also had problems with the Emma sequence, where the thermal vision didn't show anything and I had to shot and guess.

The boss battles in the game were really enjoyable! I actually preferred them over the ones in the first game. They are more challenging and interesting than the previous game. Except from the negative, this game is in my opinion a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MGS 2 is an unconventional game, that is able to stand the test of time. The gameplay mechanics and controls feel a lot smoother than the first game, with bigger and more diverse stages to allow you to get a sense of the improved mechanics. The story is more ambitious, and many of the characters feel very fleshed out, from Snake to Emma, even if their presence is short, due to their characters staying intriguing through cut scenes and dialogue. The game concludes in a way that remains unique even for a MGS game, which is a major reason in why the game lingers in the players memory long after completion. MGS 2 is definitely a must have for the PS2. Expand

Metal Gear Solid 2 is hard to judge. On the one hand, it has bad camera and controls, in addition to overall poor gameplay. On the other hand, it offers -by video game standards- an awesome story (that you can now relate to much more after so many years of release), cool cutscenes and graphics that still hold up today. In Metal Gear Solid 2, it is the story itself that is good. The storytelling, however, is hard to follow and disrupts gameplay. You will have 10 minutes of game followed by a cutscene sometimes as long as 20+ minutes, or at the very least a “phone call” where you have to listen to a long dialogue. The game was heavily criticized for having to play with Raiden throughout most of the game, as opposed to Snake, but that did not actually bother me much. For the particular narrative, I think it was the right call.

In short, I think Metal Gear Solid 2 is very strong in some areas. The problem is you have to tolerate its shortcomings. I would definitely suggest to play it on easy difficulty. In the case of MGS 2, gameplay is often a disruption to otherwise a very good experience.

Story-wise this was the perfect MGS game. It didn't have quite the same atmosphere as its predecessor but was a much more intellectual and introspective postmodern work of art than any of its successors, although that's not to say the following games didn't have mostly good stories, just they weren't on the same level of depth as this.

MGS2 is probably the most controversial game I have played. Not because of shocking content (Although the story did scare people back in 2001) but because of the huge backlash to the main character Raiden.
This was my first MGS game so I didn't know much about the plot of the first only a synopsis my cousin told me before starting but even then I knew Snake was this badass character from the opening cutscene, I knew whilst playing the Tanker section when I was 6 that this game was special and couldn't wait to see what the Plant chapter was about. And like many others I too was confused and frustrated about Raiden and the story when I beat it for the first time.
It wasn't until around 2013 that I replayed MGS2 through the HD Collection and since then I'd say MGS2 is probably one of the best games I have ever played as I always look forward to this game every time I marathon the series every year.
But what makes MGS2 so special is a story that seemed confusing back when it released but is now a fantastic tale of patriotism and how we as a society are governed by an age of technology, the plot was seriously ahead of it's time and even now serves as an important story in video games for it's commentary on current events.
The gameplay is also oddly immersive as I'm a sucker for dynamic HUD's that fade in and out depending on the action of the player, this allows enviroments like the outside of the Big Shell to really show their beauty and for an 18 year old game MGS2 still looks fantastic regardless of whether it's on PS2 or the HD Collection.
I'd urge anyone with an intrest in early 2000's gaming to at least play MGS2 as it's still a masterpiece after all these years and to me was Kojima's Swan Song for storytelling so far but who knows Death Stranding may take that position.

Throughout MGS2 all i was thinking about was what business raiden has to do with this mechanical world, a character filled with life, emotions and questions is thrown into a computer stimulation of an otherworldly phenomenon. MGS 2 broadens our understanding of the Metal Gear world and with an all memorable richly composed epic soundtrack, it ends a saga or chapter in this universe. I never got bored playing the game because the mission variety is insane and the boss fights are so much fun and so imaginative. The story is marvelous it may be hard to understand at first, but it is so clever how it is done with many twists and turns and I don't think I have ever said "what the **** so many times in my life while playing this game. The characters are brilliant too with the exception of maybe 1 or 2. At first, Raiden (the main protagonist) isn't that great and you want to be playing as Snake and not him. But by the end you understand why he's put in this game. Raiden is you, the player. He reacts how you does and the game would be different if you played as Snake. He is also a well developed character in my opinion. I can't praise this game enough, anyone who says this is the worst in the series is wrong. I recomend Play MGS3, MG, MG2, MGS1 before this one, to me this is the best of the whole saga, raiden is a good protagonist, not better than Snake or Big Boss, but he get's the job done

The story for this game is very underrated. It is too complex and convoluted for sure. But the themes and insight explored are just ahead of its time as video game. And the gameplay was fun. The bosses were inventive. Amazing characters and story. Definitely one of the best MGS entries imo.

Excellent game, with a story that leaves you very crazy, great characters, including Raiden. TOP and must play.

Un juego que se vendió con una publicidad falsa paro al contrario de otros juegos este tiene una historia trepidante con una genial banda sonora y un mensaje profundo sin duda una entrada en la serie que no te puedes perder.

Not only one of the best stealth games of all time, but one of the most interesting pieces of art i’ve ever experienced.

Even better than its predecessor, this is the ultimate MGS experience. Hideo Kojima at the top of his game. A cult game that you should not miss.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Used to hate this when it came out, but it really aged well. The rage from not playing as Snake is gone, and I’ve grown to like Raiden and the plot of this game. The then-controversial “This is actually Raiden under a mask that resembles Snake” is now iconic. The gameplay and graphics were amazing for its time, too. The attention to detail is amazing, until now (that may be my nostalgia talking)! My 2nd favorite MGS game, behind MGS3. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say that i played it 21 years too late, but it was totally worthy. The story is really good and you can see the character development of Raiden, becoming more unsure about himself and doubting everything he took for granted. Beautiful gameplay and the bossfights are god-tier, like the one with Solidus. I discovered this game only recently, and i'm glad i did. Expand

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty is still one of the best stealth action games and probably the best game of this great series. The first time I played it nearly 20 years ago, I was stunned, how good the graphics and soundtrack are. Especially the effects like rain in the well designed levels convinced me. The plot is thrilling and the characters have a lot of soul. Literally no need to explain why I'm rating this game a 10. The story itself is better than most of the TV shows I've watched

A Masterpiece, almost perfect in my opinion, amazing story, amazing characters, amazing script, amazing dialogues, amazing graphics for the time and still look pretty good, the graphics aged very well, good mechanics not perfect but after some practice you get used to.

The scheme that Kojima Productions had to go through to intentionally advertise this game falsely, essentially risking the entire future of their studio is nothing short of insane. Somehow, it worked out. The petty criticisms of the past have seemed to die out within the last decade and people are starting to appreciate this game for how insane of a ride it really was.

The gameplay is more or less an updated version of MGS 1 with an even vaster attention to detail. I generally prefer the original from a gameplay standpoint (for whatever reason) but I can acknowledge that this is definitely an improvement from an objective standpoint. Story wise, this game constantly challenged my mind, asking questions from "Did I just slip in bird **** to "What the hell am I gonna do with my life?" Anyway, good game. Thanks for the existential crisis, Kojima.
I beat this game in November of 2019. Thanksgiving 2019. We had sloppy joes.

They have a somewhat clumsy demeanor. And his voiceover is a little funny. I would like to play snake a little more. Well.. that's how they preferred it. Combat is fun. Weapons are diverse. The story has plenty of twists. And the storytelling and the ending satisfied me. The music at the end is very nice. As I said, Kojima wanted to make a game like a movie. Lots of dialogue and cut scane. I think it's a nice combination. You feel like the game is playing with you, not as if you are playing a game. A good sequel. I recommend. Expand

This game has stood the test of time like no other in my opinion. It had beautiful graphics, great characters and story. I can still play MGS2 and enjoy it as much as anything that comes out today. The biggest hate people have with it was having to play as Raiden the majority of the game. I just thought playing as Raiden added to the strength of Snakes character, later in the game when you play with Snake at your side, he is stronger, faster, has more health and a better aim than Raiden so is a great moment. But then you are tasked with taking down multiple Metal Gears, which makes Raiden a bit of a badass himself. If you research the amount of small details that went into this game as well as how many new game mechanics this game introduced, you'd be hard pressed to find a better game.

A game of everything that has a wonderful story, characters, and music. The beginning of the game on the ship was the most wonderful thing for me. I hope Remake comes down to it.

Gameplay abounds in details, several are so bizarre i wonder how could anyone come up with them. Level design sets the quality bar for years to come — sandbox-type closed stealth arenas with vigilant guards and lots of kinds of interaction with environment. A huge step forward from more arcade MGS 1 . Graphics is top notch for those times, all the small visual details such as realtime melting ice cubes, steam from the mouth, flies revolving around light sources and etc., appear not so often in videogames even nowadays.

Besides, all OSTs are extremely beautiful and atmospheric . Even that standing out jazzy RnB song in the end credits was something.

  1. The environments are amazing, when on the deck of the tank the rain effects are extremely lifelike, along with rain drops hitting the ship and characters.
  2. As stunning and enjoyable as ever. You may feel foolish gripping the controller throughout a 40-minute cut scene, but MGS2 is something which must be experienced.

MGS2 suffers in its story. I can't spoil it for you, but I can at least warn you to be prepared for a plot that frequently reaches levels of sheer absurdity.
