It was like you were easy listening to the legendary Beatles for a while and then forced to listen to Owl City for a very long 40 hours. The loving, adorable Sora becomes so hard to like, unbearable to listen to, and nudges you to wish the center of the game was around Roxas. The original game had a great simplistic story of a journey to find his friends. It made you involved and eager to continue through the story and leaves the story off with a great open ending, and leaves you with a bitter sweet, heart warming, magical farewell to all of the characters. The second one one the other hand, they completely crap all over the original plot, violate so many principles of the worlds that were said in the original, you become confused as too about what the Kingdom Hearts really is, ties in a bunch of unnecessary flashy moves, and add cut scenes every five seconds of Sora saying things that we've heard about one billion. As for the ending, it did absolutely nothing for me, it took away all of the magic, and had me not caring about any of the characters, and what happened to them. Honestly, wished it didn't exist. If you're a fan of Square and KH1, don't play KH2.

I hate this game because it has a great story line and mind boggeling graphics. The game is to short it only took me a month to beat and I hate all of the great characters. But I think most of the people who still REALLY like this are the same people(kids...I hope)who really like that anime crap I got into some pretty long arguements with some kids on youtube and they like that anime crap so telling them it sucks is the same as telling them it's good they don't care if it sucks they just want to play what their freinds are playing. So this game probably won't get any better as long as kids keep buying it but that doesn't mean it can't get better because I like FF/Disney stuff but this is neither of those things it's like the video game version of a japanese pop song there are parts when if you have an imagination your like"why did they do that? This sucks."A perfect example amongst others is riku turning into ansem there is no real reason for this to happen it just does and it's stupid and makes the story even more meaningless.I hope people stop buying these so maybe square will get it's act together and make another good one. It's pretty simple if it sounds stupid or is meaningless leave it out, increase the difficullty so I can make the game really hard if I want to,bring back real FF characters and worlds and make the story universally interesting and this series could eventually be one of the memorable classic greats. Disney meets Final Fantasy... again. ^_^ The only reason I bought the first one was becaue of the fact that it had FF characters in it, plus I saw one of the commercials and nearly fell in love. I bet the original with like two weeks, getting little no sleep. haha. Anyways, this one can only compliment the original further, and if not we always have the post sequel. ^_^

Decent story. Good presentation. But fighting is boring. All you do is tap X over and over. The enemys never even get harder throughout the game. The game is linear too. Its a above average hack and slash game. Don't buy this game just rent it. Trust me this game is NOT worth playing twice. Go out and buy Oblivion, it's way better then this game.

It included some of the best graphics I'd seen on a PS2 game, fun abilities, great characters. I had so much fun playing it. It is, however, flawed. When playing it, it's impossible not to compare it to the original Kingdom Hearts game. The gameplay is far too easy, even on Proud mode (the most difficult setting), mainly due to the enemies seemingly never attacking you, or at least not as much as they did in the first game. This means most battles are over very quickly. Some of the boss fights are a little underwhelming, especially Shan Yu, Hades, Cerberus, Luxord and the bosses of Argabah. However, most of them are as fun as the first game, most of the Organization fights are great, Barbossa, Oogie Boogie, the Pride Lands fights, are all great. The only world I have a problem with is Atlantica - I'd much rather have had a world like the one in Kingdom Hearts than the whole pushing-buttons-in-time-to-the-beat musical. Another minus is that the story seems to have lost some of the epic scope that was present in the original KH, it feels as though it's lost some of it's heart. The exploration part of the game has been dumbed down greatly - the chests are so easy to get to they're literally right in front of you the whole way through the game, there's no secret areas or bosses besides Sephiroth, no objects to find such as the Dalmations. Basically, it's good for a couple of play throughs, but you won't find much to do after that. There's some quests that will take up your time but 90% of them are easily done on the first time. However, I like the new synthesis system, which is something that will keep you busy for a bit. And I love the new worlds included based on live-action Disney films. If you're a fan it's definitely worth playing as it's an addictive experience, but if you're new to the series, I wouldn't play this one first. Expand

This game is awesome, even when there are hordes and hordes of Heartless after you the game never lags. Square Enix is creative with all the Disney characters and story line. This game is better than Zelda and more fun too the new reaction command makes the game even more interesting to play with.

I first have to say that KH1 is the reason I bought my PS2. I am a huge fan of the first game and basic concept. However, I just beat KH2 and am generally dissatisfied with it. There were many gaps in the gameplay that I felt were a result of pure laziness on the part of the designers. Also, Maleficient showed up all throughout the game but was not dealt with in the ending. Mayhaps she provides the motivation for KH3, but at least mention her in the ending to KH2! I guess on the positive side I could compliment the many (and I mean MANY) opportunities to use the restroom or take a shower, or even mow the yard during the cut scenes. Those scenes I swear must have consisted of about 75% of the 36 hours it took me to beat it! This game is definitely a must-have for fans, but certainly not worth the $50 I paid. Expand

There's plenty of refresher material so you know what's going on in the story, which is interesting and goes well with the previous two games (the first one and Chain of Memories). For the most part, the voice acting was good - there were some voices that didn't sound entirely like the original (Cpt. Sparrow's voice bothered the hell out of me) but they were still believable and well done. Really, it was great in all aspects except the fighting and the pacing which pretty much ruined it. The fighting was entirely button mashing. Just lock on and mash buttons. All. The Way. Like I said, it is aesthetically satisfying to destroy enemies but it takes little thought besides watching for the timing of reaction commands. Also it was way too easy. There were 2 battles I had to retry once on standard - the second one against the guy with the guitar weapon and the one with the black-haired guy with the gun weapons towards the end. I haven't tried the hardest mode, but the standard mode should be much harder than it was. The number one aspect I disliked was the pacing. KH2 is a repetitive combination of mini-games, boss fights, and cutscenes. I felt like most of the worlds were very small with few areas to explore and nothing to do but open the chests (that are in plain sight) and defeat a few enemies. You also can't go through two areas without encountering a cutscene that likely doesn't add much to the story, followed by a mini-game (think musical nightmare in Atlantica) or a "defeat-these-enemies" fight. It gets boring, and when I got to The World that Never Was, I just wanted it to end already so I could escapde the boring script. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first KH game, and this one also has exciting disney worlds to explore. The only main thing that makes me dislike the game is that the cutscenes are wayyyy too common and way to long. I find myself skipping them and missing the story line because I don't have that much time to play per day. Also the battle is too simple; autolocks on an enemy and press x as much as possible. The maps are very simple, nothing much to explore. The worst part of the game was the beginning. I spent 3 hours on the introduction tutorial before getting the real Sora, before the actual game started. I like the different abilities the characters can get and how you get a different character helping you in each world. I'd say the game is ok, and the parts i don't like are understandable since it's aimed at young people. Expand

Also, on a third mutated hand, this game also has some of the cheapest, most annoying boss fights I've ever played in a video game. As someone who has platinumed Crash Bandicoot, I feel that I have extreme patience. The data battles in this game are so horribly designed and utterly cheap, that after I had lost to Xemnas one time too many (who after a certain point becomes nigh unhittable, meanwhile he's comboing you to oblivion as you try and land a single attack. Not to even mention the attack that in the PS4 version is actually undodgeable, or the thing where he can take Sora and make you be Riku. If either one has low health, you lose. Sora will die before you can rescue him from Xemnas or Riku will die because Sora's dying and you don't have time to avoid the attacks) I deleted my save file without even a tinge of hesitation or remorse. It improves on a lot of kh1's problems (as any good sequel should) the combat is no longer clunky, slow, and just generally unpleasent but instead is more fast paced and just feels more satisfieng, your magic now cools down instead of just depelting, and the drive system can help you get through stickyer situations (when the game lets you use it). however there are numerous problems that hold kh2 back mostly stemming from the dev's strange disire to mix actions games with turn based RPGs in ways that don't mesh well. first off in addition to the core games' awkward menu system, dodge rolling (arguably the most useful ability in the franchise and the staple of a fair action game) has been locked behind a drive form thaat can only be accessed late in to the game which only lasts untill the drive gage runs out and isn't always avalable to use leaving you with just your block and parry (when you actually have an opertunity to perform one successfully) and different "action commands" (that only work on certain enemies at specific times) the problem here stems from the fact that you blocking can't cancel other actions meaning that enemies can whale on you while you sit slow and helpless to retaliate because you attacked 2 seconds too soon or the enemy attacking you isn't in your line of sight. action commands are just as useless. they require you to actually be able to use them which unless your fighting a dusk you can never do because you'll almost always lose the oppertunity before the command is finished loading due to the fact that you controls lock up when ever your hit. the next point of falure is the worlds. in a misguided atempt to make the game more "interesting" the dev gave each world unique mechanics most of which are utter **** an olny amount to annoying mini games that don't actually test what you've learned about the game and only serve as stumbling blocks to pad out the game with artifical challenge which it doesn't need give the the fact that not only is kh2 already a pretty long game but also that player can select all diffuclty levels right out of the gate. the worst part of these inane mini games it that they bypass difficulty selection since they follow their own special rules that for the most part are never seen again making me think that the devs may have been paid by the hourconsidering how much time must've wasting programming one-time mechanics. and finally the moment i'm sure a lot of you dear sobered-up readers have been waitng for... THE PLOT! kingdom hearts 2 takes place after the events of 358/2 days (a game release 3 years after kh2) and chain of memories (a wierd virtual card game no one played) meaning by this point the plot waters started to get merky. it also doesn't help that the secret ending (which is the games true ending) is locked behind difficulty dependent secret challenges which in this day and age you can find on gamefaqs or youtube however the internet was just starting to come into popularity and youtube was in it"s infancy when kh2 was release leading to the plot of the kingdom hearts franchise to become too metal gear-esque for it's own good leading to a plot that feels more like a janky puzzle many of the pieces of which are not avalable (or haven't been pulled out of the dev's ass) yet. to summarize calling kh2 good yet flawed is being too generous in all honesty it's the worst kind of slog: a game with shoe-horned in artificial difficulty in the form of inane one-time-only mini games and is rife with lost potential. i pray to god that kingdom hearts 3 reverses kingdom hearts 2's awful
gameplay descisions but i'm not getting my hopes up

Kingdom Hearts II vastly improves on its predecessor's battle system to deliver the best pure gameplay thus far in the franchise, though its narrative goes a bit off the rails in the latter stages.

Kingdom Hearts II is where the franchise really began to pull away from a simple and fun story-line to something more convoluted and pretentious, though the game still thankfully finds its sense of charm. It also begins with the most infamously tedious tutorial section; a mind-numbingly dull three-hour story segment with boring mini-games.

Furthermore, Kingdom Hearts II is relatively light on side content, and what is there is fairly bland. However, its vastly superior upgraded version, Kingdom Hearst II: Final Mix, solves this issue in spades.

It just couldn't! You guys probably remember my glowing review of the original "Kingdom Hearts," where I gave the game a 10 out of 10 and proclaimed it to be one of my favorite video games, so even though I was underwhelmed by "Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories" when I played it (and gave it a 6 out of 10), I can safely say I was excited going into this game. But no matter what anyone told me (and trust me, a lot of people told me), there was no way it could be better than the first one. Could it? Well, yes. Even though it doesn't do what "Bayonetta 2" did for the first "Bayonetta" game (improve on it so much that it makes the first one look significantly worse in comparison), "Kingdom Hearts II" improves on the already fantastic first game, making for a can't-miss sequel.
"Kingdom Hearts II" takes on a grander, wider, and overall bigger approach to storytelling in comparison to the first one. With a larger-scale and higher stakes, the game comes through with even more epic, exciting action and pacing than the first one (not to say that game wasn't epic or exciting), and along with that comes some new characters that are well-written, clever, and often heartfelt. Hell, the story was so exciting that I was willing to stomach the 3-hour tutorial in one sitting because the intro was that compelling. The visuals are also top-notch as always, the environments are rich and lovingly crafted in relation to the Disney films they are based off of, and as always with "Kingdom Hearts" games, the music is absolutely brilliant. The gameplay has also been nicely-refined in comparison to the first game, with better platforming, a stronger camera, and overall deeper combat. I've seen a number of people describe the game as being "button-mashy," and even if that's the case, I think the combat system as a whole is more intricate, more fast-paced, and more complex to it this time around, with nice new additions like Drive Forms and greater abilities that make the game a lot more fun to play than the already fun first entry. And there's also tons of replayability with the game: I clocked 30 hours on the game without even collecting everything or going for some of the secrets, so if I can put that much time into a non-completed file, imagine how much more time will go into a completed one!
If there's anything slightly negative I can say about the game this time around, it's that the story as a whole is far less simple than it was before, to the point where it can be a little hard to follow at points. If you enjoyed the relative simplicity of the first game's story, things are much deeper here, and you might even want to bring a flowchart along with you.
Even still, "Kingdom Hearts II" is a breathtaking RPG that manages to live up to its already fantastic predecessor, and it's a game you should most definitely play. And with "Kingdom Hearts III" finally looking like it's close to release (FINALLY!), what better time than the present to experience this game (and the rest of the series, for that matter)? It's an amazing sequel, and it's well worth your time.
Final rating: 10 out of 10 "Fantastic"

Kingdom Hearts II is one of the best RPGs I've ever played hands down. It deserves all the hype and recognition it gets. The new worlds are based off of quite amazing Disney classics such as Mulan and The Lion King.Kingdom Hearts II is one of the best RPGs I've ever played hands down. There are some new worlds and some old ones. The new worlds are based off of quite amazing Disney classics such as Mulan and The Lion King. Which is definitely wonderful for me since I'm a big, longtime Disney fan. There are also various characters from the Final Fantasy franchise. Some will be your allies and some will be your enemies. The battle system has definitely changed a lot from the first game and rightfully so due to how frustrating the controls and camera were. The system in this game is easier to use and has all kinds of nifty new features that you will definitely love.

The story in this game will confuse you at first and starts off rather slow and sluggish which may even turn you off but things soon heat up and you'll find yourself immersed and spellbound by the game! You'll be so drawn into it that you'll be disappointed when it's over. Very disappointed. There are several mini-games/side quests in the game that you can do and they are actually quite good and borderline addictive. Even if some of them are slightly cheesy. The boss battles are as climactic as they come and you might find yourself getting several Game Overs which will prove to be frustrating and downright annoying.

As for music, it is perfection. No other word can describe it. The music for each world will remind you of the Disney film it's based on and if you're a Disney fan, it'll be nostalgia overload for you. The theme song Sanctuary (or Passion in Japanese) is wonderful and you'll want to listen to it over and over again. The voice acting is also perfection. With an all-star voice cast and most of the characters having their actors reprised from their source material, you won't be disappointed.

Unfortunately the game is a one-hit wonder due to having no replay value. But it's so amazing that you'll want to play it again! Overall, Kingdom Hearts II is amazing and it should definitely be in your collection! If you haven't played this game, you haven't lived!

If you're a real fan of video games, then this is a must-play before you die. It features incredible combat mechanics, knockout graphics, epic boss battles, and a great story, making it one of the best games I've ever played.

The improved and more polished sequel to Kingdom Hearts. It is the superior game and with Birth by Sleep the best game in the franchise so far. Be warned: Parts of the story left you puzzled if you did not play 358/2 Days and Chain of Memories. The game does a poor job in explaining things in this regard (Not a problem for the rest of the story). In our times it is no problem to look things up on the internet. I must warn you again if you want to play the games instead: 358/2 was on the Nintendo DS only (There is a feature in Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix which is basically a movie) and Chain of Memory has a terrible battle system that even drove of hard core fans (Was a mayor complaint by many / I tried the game multiple times but could not adapt to it properly). Back to Kingdom Hearts 2. They improved nearly everything. The graphics are better and the music is fantastic. I want to praise Hikaru Utada for the opening theme song. It was so good that I restarted the game immediately to listen to it again. The battle system is now top notch and they added the drive system which gave you additional powers for a limited time. Tip: It doesn't look like a big improvement first but you get impressive results when you level it up, even new abilities which can be used in the normal form. The game has the best variety of worlds in the franchise (Tied with Kingdom Hearts 3),that are now bigger with more room for exploration. They took also great effort for the boss battles. There are many memorable battles that get you to your limits on higher difficulties (You can always grind levels to overpower the bosses). The addition of the Nobody's and the Organization was also a strength of the game. I like the variety of the characters and their individual motivations. You have also more Final Fantasy characters with many good (badass) scenes. Our main characters are always as lovable and driven as before. For story purposes I will say the game delivers a good performance. With the most awesome parts in the Hollow Bastion world where you get highlight after highlight (Most awesome part in the whole franchise). The other worlds are also pretty good and have story lines that get you attached very well. Overall this was my favourite game in the franchise, tied with Birth by Sleep and I replay it once in a while. Expand

I will do my best to explain the plot of KHII. It's been a while since Sora, Donald, and Goofy defeated Ansem, and it appears that the Heartless are back to their old tricks, but before we learn of them, we see a new, and mysterious enemy: The Nobodies. Also different, the first 4 to 5 hours of gameplay are spent playing as a new character, Roxas. For a while, the story will seem confusing, but once you reach the end, it will ALL make sense. After a few hours of gameplay, you'll play as Sora once again, and you'll meet old and new friends alike. Also going on as a side story, Kairi has forgotten all about Sora, but is eager to learn more about 'the boy I used to have so much fun with', and Riku seems to be gone without a trace. Meanwhile, Roxas (who sounds eerily like Jesse McCartney *wink*) has been dreaming about Sora, and his past adventures, despite never having met him before, and while all this is going on, a mysterious new force called Organization XIII is taking shape....

The gameplay behind KHII is phenomenal. Rather than the basic play behind KHI, the system has been overhauled with a new thing called drive form, which allows Sora to increase his power for a limited time. The MP gauge is also different, which isn't that great. It's the only flaw of KHII. You'll be hooked within minutes of playing this game.

With appearances from the Disney classic characters Beast, Belle, Cogsworth, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Chip, Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, The Peddler, Iago, Chicken Little, Peter Pan, Stitch, Mulan, Captain Shang, Simba, Nala, Timon, Pumbaa, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, Chip and Dale, Hercules, Megara, Phil the Satyr, Ariel, Sebastian, Flounder, King Triton, Tron, Jack Skellington, The Mayor, Sally, Dr. Finkelstein, Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Disney's villains are also back, including Captain Barbossa, Jafar, Shan-Yu, Hades, Scar, Commander Sark, The Master Control Program, Oogie Boogie, and Ursula. Square's Final Fantasy heroes are back as well, including Squall Leonhart, Aeris (Aerith), Cloud, Auron, Yuffie, Tifa Lockheart, Raijin, Fujin, Seifer, Yuna, Rikku, and Paine, not to mention the most evil villain in video game history, Sephiroth is back.

Kingdom Hearts II also has some cool voice actors, including Haley Joel Osment, Hayden Panitierre, David Gallagher, Sean Astin, Jesse McCartney, David Boreanaz, James Arnold Taylor, Tara Strong, B.D. Wong, Mena Suvari, and Robbie Benson.

This is one game you cannot afford to miss. If you play one game on PS2 this year, Kingdom Hearts II should be that game. Don't miss this clever blend of fun, epic battles, romance, action, adventure, humor, and gripping suspense.

This is a much better game than the original in terms of gameplay I like that it was easier to follow as in the first game I got lost a couple of times and needed a guide to progress in the story. The only bad thing was the need to use a new mechanic to gain abilities. All in all, this is an excellent sequel that years later is still fun to play.

Kingdom Hearts II in my opinion is the best RPG of PS2. I loved to play this game, The soundtrack is amazing, the gameplay is innovative for it's age. You can interact with Disney's characters and travel to Disney's worlds. KH2 is simply amazing !

It doesn't quite capture the magic of the first game, and while its narrative exploits are interesting they can also feel too arcane at times, leaving the player confused about what's going on. It's also a bit too easy compared to the first game. But at the same time, it's still a great action fantasy game that retains many of the features that made the first Kingdom Hearts amazing.

The World That Never Was is the reason you play this game. Everything leading up to it is just filler nonsense in Disney worlds. Mind you, the filler is definitely FUN to play, so it doesn't feel like a waste of time in the moment.

I have a fascination with the line between life and death, and KH2 has a small glimmer of the type of story I like which suggests that distinction isn't so binary as it is understood to be.

This is also why I like games such as Ice Pick-Lodge's "The Void" which also tackles the theme of the life that exists between the line of life and death. Though in a very Russian way.

Getting back to KH2, the Organization 13 members are boring anime boys, but as ultimate expressions of classic FF classes they are really cool! Shame they all wear the same dull coat instead of taking the classic armors to a ludicrous extreme as well.
This game also marks the departure into bananas-land for the KH story, where I became a passive observer.

The mix between Final Fantasy and Disney created a child that exceeded the expectations of myself, and many other Rpg fans. The soundtrack is by far one of the best of all time. Almost everything about Kingdom Hearts 2 is wonderful, however, the introduction of the game where players play as Roxas is far too long of introduction before playing as Sora and is disappointing. and this game deserves to be considered one of the best even after more than 10 years. I gave KH 10/10.

In KH2, the plot is getting confusing... It's been over a decade, but KH2 barely made a lasting impression in my memory, unlike KH1. It also has too many flashy moves and QTEs; in the original, the combat mechanics reward players for being tactical and skillful, but the battles in KH2 (& KH3) become button mashing chore. 1. An all around excellent game. It looks phenomenal and plays even better. What started out as a crazy fan based experiment for Square-Enix has panned out to one of the most entertaining titles of the year. [JPN Import]

From the amazing opening cg cinema (oh god, I think I just soiled myself it was so good) with Utada Hikaru's newest song, Passion, to the kick ass ending, this game rocked and set itself a more than worthy successor to the first Kingdom Hearts. [JPN Import]
  3. It has an excellent battle system, more variety than almost any game out there, great graphics, and an interesting story. The title isn't perfect though. The story lacks a bit of cohesiveness and the auto-camera still can't seem to track everything that's going on. [JPN Import]
