Disney and Square Enix have done it again with their sequel to their massive surprise hit. Though the story can get a bit confusing and some levels are a bit annoying to get through. The new worlds, bosses, music, and new characters are truly a great reason to experience this game if you loved the first one.

If Kingdom Hearts was a good foundation for a series, Kingdom Hearts II was a near perfection of it. Practically every single aspect from the first game has been taken here and improved upon, with one or two exceptions.
The story is a good follow-up to KH and Chain of Memories, introducing new elements and characters that flow very well throughout the campaign. Voice acting has been improved upon, holding up even better than KH. The character models and environments still look good for being a PS2 game, similar to that of the first game. However, the facial animations are still the same mixed bag that they've been for over ten years, at least until Kingdom Hearts III came along. I've heard a lot of people complain about how Sora sounds in this game, but I have the opposite problem. i find Sora's voice slightly annoying in the first game, but in this one he sounds more mature and just better all around.
The worlds in this game have both been improved and degraded from the first game. In one area, getting lost almost isn't a thing anymore, thanks to two new additions from Square-Enix: The Minimap and the objective bar. These were two of the smartest additions to the series as a whole. However, the worlds have lost some of the verticality they had in KH. everything is more flat, and less interesting. It's not to the level that Birth By Sleep is, but it's a little disappointing. However, in the grand scheme of the whole game, it isn't the biggest problem, and The World that Never Was (the final level) is incredibly fun to explore, so it hasn't all been lost.
The combat in this game is one of the biggest improvements brought to this game. It blows KH's combat out of the water, with an improvement of movement speed, agility, and aerial combat. You have your standard stuff like the Keyblade, Magic, and Limits, but there are more skills for the Keyblade than ever before, making fights a beautiful dance of flying around the screen beating everything up with an oversized key. The best new addition comes in Drive forms: temporary powerups that change Sora's fighting style drastically, upping the style factor. Leveling up these forms also gets you new agility moves, like ground dashes, air spins, high jumps, dodge rolls, and flying. There is so much you can do, it may feel overwhelming at first, but once you get into the flow, everything falls into place.
The bossfights are incredible. Each is distinctive from the last, bringing something new to the table. the Heartless bossfights are good as usual, but the ones that really stand out are against a group introduced in Chain of Memories: Organization XIII. Each member you fight has a new moveset, making them always feel fresh. Two of them in particular are immense challenges. You may be stuck on them for a very long time. You may feel like giving up, but they can be beat, and once you do, it's one of the best feelings in gaming. The final boss especially is one of the best I have seen in gaming. It's dynamic, interesting, full of cool set pieces, and a real challenge that once you get to the very end of, you reach one of the best moments (that I won't spoil) I have ever witnessed.
This game is kind of hard to jump into if you don't know the stories of Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, but if you do or don't care about story, this game is a near masterclass of a game, one that would establish a baseline that every time a new Kingdom Hearts game came out, people would point to KHII as the golden standard it had to live up to.

Not only am I playing through a soothing story with an anime setting, but I'm also experiencing the nostalgia of all my old favorite Disney movies, even the ones I haven't seen in ages. And that nostalgia is like meeting up with an old friend. I haven't played the first game in the series, but the flash backs tell me everything I need to know. I understand all these charters thanks to excellent emotion animation.

It's a moving sensation, to feel connected to something you've only known for a little while. When my eyes caught those gorgeous levels, the creative designs of the villains and the Heartless...I was thunder struck.

Great, but not as good as the original. The story is still fantastic, and the gameplay was revved up a bit more, but it still didn't have the charm of the original. The ending boss fight is great, and the CG's are beautiful. (The opening in particular.)

While this is perfectly fine most of the time, the problems comes from the fact that your abilities and enemy difficulty are completely unbalanced. Without using limits or drive forms, enemies are decently challenging, but drive forms throw a monkeywrench in by making it so easy to just wipe the floor with them, even on proud mode(hard). Magic is also extremely useless outside of healing and reflecting, and even that is a huge pain. I really really wanted to love this game, and I still like it, but there are a few huge flaws with it's gameplay that cannot be ignored Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of my favorite Kingdom Hearts games and my second favorite PS2 game. The first being KHI. I loved the way that it brought back some old worlds and also brought in some amazing new ones like Pride Rock and the Land of Dragons. One of the things I didn't like was that the Olympus Colosseum games were moved to the Underworld which in my opinion took the feel out of that world. Also, there was no Traverse Town. I don't mean that the world should have came back, I just wanted a hub world. I know that Hollow Bastion was supposed to be that but it again didn't have the same feel to it and I didn't visit that world unless the game took me there. Another thing is that there was no real plot. In KH1, Sora was looking for his friends, in KHCOM pm he was looking for Namine but on the second one, I had no idea. However, again I loved the new world additions especially Port Royal but if in KH3 is like KH2, then I won't be rushing out to but a Playstation 3 Expand

Graphics and gameplay mechanics are superb, with amazing visual effects and a camera that functions properly (unlike the one in the first game, I shudder at the memory). But many people argue that the storyline, although captivating, is linear and repetitive. Go to a new world, fight some enemies, seal the keyhole, lather, rinse and repeat. While that is true, you don’t even realize that it’s happening until more than halfway through the game. And even with the pattern, each world has something unique and different that lessens the similarities. One bad thing I will say about the game is that the difficulty is very low. Compared to the first game, where the triangle and square combos are essential to progress, you can beat this game by mashing only the ‘x’ button. And even if you haven’t played the first game, it’s pretty obvious that this game in and of itself is simple. Expand

You still visit a variety of Disney lands, but theres more emphasis on the original kingdom hearts story this time around than just helping out Disney characters…
This time youre after a group known as organization 13..
The group that caused all of the memory loss problems of soar in the past games that you fought so hard to re earn…
There also after the kingdom hearts... for reasons I wont say…
Youre still taking out the heartless and resealing doors in different Disney worlds… but now youre dealing with a new set of enemies known as nobodies… who are pretty much just white versions of the heartless…
Theyre not in any way harder to deal with…
The deliver of this game is miles better than the original kingdom hearts.. it’s about 8 hours longer clocking in at around 33 hours but doesn’t feel nearly as long thanks to the near perfect pacing of this game that only hiccups towards the end when you have to fight through 90,000 boss battles to get to the credits much like the original kingdom hearts…
but the other 30 hours is fast paced and despite the open world style like the original, feels much more linear and there’s little to no back tracking at all.. you can play through this game without a guide easily as it doesn’t waste your time… the game even does a great job most of the time stopping you from going in the wrong direction reminding you where you should be going next in the world…
The draw for most people is the Disney properties, and you won’t be disappointed as you go to a variety of new locations to meet characters like Mulan, and jack sparrow.. Even finally going to the places of characters you meet in past games like beasts castle….
And the gummi ship part is back and somehow worse than the last time... seriously... get rid of them.. There still not fun...
There are a handful of locations from the past games too such as atlantics and Halloween town... but they all feel fresh and tell new stories of the characters.. Even during the 2nd half of the game when you have to revisit each location all over again... the game still manages to deliver a fresh experience each time…
the delivery of the story isn’t the only thing that got a makeover…
Unfortunately the game play style did as well…
The original kingdom hearts had a great deal of 3d platforming elements, epic boss battles and a watcher 3 style combat system where it was all about strategy.. Dodging attacks parrying…
Kingdom hearts 2 has practically erased all 3d platforming elements and turned this into more of a baby’s first god of war game…
Its heavily hack and slash and combat encounters as insanely easy compared to the original... which is a shame because it kills all satisfaction…
They also got rid of the ability to roll and high jump outside of this new system called a drive form…
You literally have to fill up a meter to be able to roll in combat.. awful idea and makes it feel slow and again hack and slash like a god of war game rather than fast and fluent like a watcher 3 style…
And the boss battles here aren’t these epic showdowns with villains…
your fighting generic heartless bosses for the most part and members of organization 13… and the game ads time trials and other gimmicks to encounters rather than having unique showdowns the original head…
There’s nothing memorable in the gameplay….
Sure it’s more fun to go through kingdom hearts 2 than kingdom hearts one…
But the original kingdom hearts felt more satisfying to get through...
A mix of the 2 and you have a perfect game…
You just feel too handcuffed here…
The game chooses when you can and cant use your drive forms, it chooses when you can and cant call in a summon… it locks off simple abilities like rolling.. .
The new MP gauge is 1 line instead of broken up leading to a lot of guess work when using the magic which honestly discouraged me from using it at all…
But the story pulled me through… the charm of the Disney worlds and characters pulled me through…
This is my favorite kingdom hearts game so far…
I just hope to see a marriage of 1 and 2 in Kingdom Hearts 3
    I give Kingdom Hearts 2
    an 8/10

What I didn't like it is that Sora is always saying the same in every planet: "We are Sora, Donald and Goofy". You feel that the creators of the game didn't have anything more interesting to say... Kingdom Hearts II is where the franchise really began to pull away from a simple and fun story-line to something more convoluted and pretentious, though the game still thankfully finds its sense of charm. It also begins with the most infamously tedious tutorial section; a mind-numbingly dull three-hour story segment with boring mini-games.

Furthermore, Kingdom Hearts II is relatively light on side content, and what is there is fairly bland. However, its vastly superior upgraded version, Kingdom Hearst II: Final Mix, solves this issue in spades.

The only main thing that makes me dislike the game is that the cutscenes are wayyyy too common and way to long. I find myself skipping them and missing the story line because I don't have that much time to play per day. Also the battle is too simple; autolocks on an enemy and press x as much as possible. The maps are very simple, nothing much to explore. The worst part of the game was the beginning. I spent 3 hours on the introduction tutorial before getting the real Sora, before the actual game started. I like the different abilities the characters can get and how you get a different character helping you in each world. I'd say the game is ok, and the parts i don't like are understandable since it's aimed at young people. Expand

Also, on a third mutated hand, this game also has some of the cheapest, most annoying boss fights I've ever played in a video game. As someone who has platinumed Crash Bandicoot, I feel that I have extreme patience. The data battles in this game are so horribly designed and utterly cheap, that after I had lost to Xemnas one time too many (who after a certain point becomes nigh unhittable, meanwhile he's comboing you to oblivion as you try and land a single attack. Not to even mention the attack that in the PS4 version is actually undodgeable, or the thing where he can take Sora and make you be Riku. If either one has low health, you lose. Sora will die before you can rescue him from Xemnas or Riku will die because Sora's dying and you don't have time to avoid the attacks) I deleted my save file without even a tinge of hesitation or remorse. I found the game charming and there is an abundance of worlds. I appreciated most of the mini-games and the music as well. For a 2006 game, it's certainly above average but I saw way better games in this era (Paper Mario Thousand Year door, FF9 and 10)

For me, this game is a 6,6/10

The reason why I played this game and KH1 is to better understand and appreciate KH3 that I also purchased

Great production values, but what a silly childish game for anyone over 12. This is not the way forward, a polished backward leap. Japanese designers ( alot of them anyway) need to advance beyond their cutesy culture and get gaming into the mainstream with more challenging stories and game mechanics. It's in no way a bad game just ridiculously young in scope. IGN review is bang on.

There are however some good Disney cameos such as Mushu's, to go with the poor ones such as Capt Jack Sparrow's (his entry was plain dull). Final Fantasy characters were cool, Vivi was nice to see but they completely screwed his character up. Overall, its just very underwhelming. The huge opportunities this combination could provide just havent been exploited. Well, at least SE still makes Final Fantasy. Those games never fail to impress me (Ignoring FFX-2 + FFXI). Dragon Quest is good as well. So, in conclusion, while KH2 does have some unmistakable charm its kiddy, boring and absurd parts make it a journey not worth taking. Expand

There's plenty of refresher material so you know what's going on in the story, which is interesting and goes well with the previous two games (the first one and Chain of Memories). For the most part, the voice acting was good - there were some voices that didn't sound entirely like the original (Cpt. Sparrow's voice bothered the hell out of me) but they were still believable and well done. Really, it was great in all aspects except the fighting and the pacing which pretty much ruined it. The fighting was entirely button mashing. Just lock on and mash buttons. All. The Way. Like I said, it is aesthetically satisfying to destroy enemies but it takes little thought besides watching for the timing of reaction commands. Also it was way too easy. There were 2 battles I had to retry once on standard - the second one against the guy with the guitar weapon and the one with the black-haired guy with the gun weapons towards the end. I haven't tried the hardest mode, but the standard mode should be much harder than it was. The number one aspect I disliked was the pacing. KH2 is a repetitive combination of mini-games, boss fights, and cutscenes. I felt like most of the worlds were very small with few areas to explore and nothing to do but open the chests (that are in plain sight) and defeat a few enemies. You also can't go through two areas without encountering a cutscene that likely doesn't add much to the story, followed by a mini-game (think musical nightmare in Atlantica) or a "defeat-these-enemies" fight. It gets boring, and when I got to The World that Never Was, I just wanted it to end already so I could escapde the boring script. Expand

It doesn't quite capture the magic of the first game, and while its narrative exploits are interesting they can also feel too arcane at times, leaving the player confused about what's going on. It's also a bit too easy compared to the first game. But at the same time, it's still a great action fantasy game that retains many of the features that made the first Kingdom Hearts amazing.

I have a fascination with the line between life and death, and KH2 has a small glimmer of the type of story I like which suggests that distinction isn't so binary as it is understood to be.

This is also why I like games such as Ice Pick-Lodge's "The Void" which also tackles the theme of the life that exists between the line of life and death. Though in a very Russian way.

Getting back to KH2, the Organization 13 members are boring anime boys, but as ultimate expressions of classic FF classes they are really cool! Shame they all wear the same dull coat instead of taking the classic armors to a ludicrous extreme as well.
This game also marks the departure into bananas-land for the KH story, where I became a passive observer.

Kingdom Hearts 2's story is an enchanting chronicle that blends the dreamy-like mood of a fairy tale with the cheesy, spectacular epicness of an anime, sustained and tied together by a powerful emotional core elevated by unique memorable music. Superbly directed scenes that can deliver and convey the tender, melancholic drama amidst the wacky, bizarre concepts of its world and lore, thanks to both being inextricably tied together. Alas, in gameplay, we instantly notice that Level Design got a massive downgrade. The intricate, fun maps of KH1 have been replaced with dull hallways and hollow rooms, with chests scattered here and there in esthetically pleasing but structurally barren environments, with only a single optional area providing any engaging platforming. The game experience is saved and recontextualized thanks to the absolute beauty of Combat: the already incredibly snappy and fluid base combos are the solid ground on top of which an exciting amount of engaging heterogeneous possibilities are stacked. On top of Abilities, Magic and Summons, Fusions and Limits have been introduced. Fusions especially significantly change the gameplay with different playstyles while also providing a new layer of strategic resource management to progression, as Limits offer an additional, tangential support. All these new additions are perfectly balanced, to be upgraded and unleashed against a strongly diversified army of enemies and bosses as the various levels countinuously add new twists and variations to the battle formula to keep things fresh through new attack patterns or external gimmicks, with the only serious flaw being the oversimplified, underdeveloped Reaction Commands (It must be also noted that enemy pose a meaningful, satisfying challenge only on Critical Mode). The game also offers an incredible amount of thrilling, greatly polished optional bosses to push the player's skills to their limit after the main campaign. Gummiship sections have been made much more enjoyable thanks to a faster pace and more visual flare.

It improves on a lot of kh1's problems (as any good sequel should) the combat is no longer clunky, slow, and just generally unpleasent but instead is more fast paced and just feels more satisfieng, your magic now cools down instead of just depelting, and the drive system can help you get through stickyer situations (when the game lets you use it). however there are numerous problems that hold kh2 back mostly stemming from the dev's strange disire to mix actions games with turn based RPGs in ways that don't mesh well. first off in addition to the core games' awkward menu system, dodge rolling (arguably the most useful ability in the franchise and the staple of a fair action game) has been locked behind a drive form thaat can only be accessed late in to the game which only lasts untill the drive gage runs out and isn't always avalable to use leaving you with just your block and parry (when you actually have an opertunity to perform one successfully) and different "action commands" (that only work on certain enemies at specific times) the problem here stems from the fact that you blocking can't cancel other actions meaning that enemies can whale on you while you sit slow and helpless to retaliate because you attacked 2 seconds too soon or the enemy attacking you isn't in your line of sight. action commands are just as useless. they require you to actually be able to use them which unless your fighting a dusk you can never do because you'll almost always lose the oppertunity before the command is finished loading due to the fact that you controls lock up when ever your hit. the next point of falure is the worlds. in a misguided atempt to make the game more "interesting" the dev gave each world unique mechanics most of which are utter **** an olny amount to annoying mini games that don't actually test what you've learned about the game and only serve as stumbling blocks to pad out the game with artifical challenge which it doesn't need give the the fact that not only is kh2 already a pretty long game but also that player can select all diffuclty levels right out of the gate. the worst part of these inane mini games it that they bypass difficulty selection since they follow their own special rules that for the most part are never seen again making me think that the devs may have been paid by the hourconsidering how much time must've wasting programming one-time mechanics. and finally the moment i'm sure a lot of you dear sobered-up readers have been waitng for... THE PLOT! kingdom hearts 2 takes place after the events of 358/2 days (a game release 3 years after kh2) and chain of memories (a wierd virtual card game no one played) meaning by this point the plot waters started to get merky. it also doesn't help that the secret ending (which is the games true ending) is locked behind difficulty dependent secret challenges which in this day and age you can find on gamefaqs or youtube however the internet was just starting to come into popularity and youtube was in it"s infancy when kh2 was release leading to the plot of the kingdom hearts franchise to become too metal gear-esque for it's own good leading to a plot that feels more like a janky puzzle many of the pieces of which are not avalable (or haven't been pulled out of the dev's ass) yet. to summarize calling kh2 good yet flawed is being too generous in all honesty it's the worst kind of slog: a game with shoe-horned in artificial difficulty in the form of inane one-time-only mini games and is rife with lost potential. i pray to god that kingdom hearts 3 reverses kingdom hearts 2's awful

It's like the inputs often don't work in this game. Couple that with the bosses constantly becoming invincible for no reason at 1hp for a while. They'll just continuously eat attacks without defending and won't die. This can be especially annoying during the data battles, for example. The second one one the other hand, they completely crap all over the original plot, violate so many principles of the worlds that were said in the original, you become confused as too about what the Kingdom Hearts really is, ties in a bunch of unnecessary flashy moves, and add cut scenes every five seconds of Sora saying things that we've heard about one billion. As for the ending, it did absolutely nothing for me, it took away all of the magic, and had me not caring about any of the characters, and what happened to them. Honestly, wished it didn't exist. The game just disappointed me in the action, fighting styles and felt like a kiddish game or something to just laugh at... I personally like most of all the other games except this one for some reason

Completely lame, nothing about this game is likable. The big shoes and 20 belts on a character aesthetic is ugly and dull, the plot and characters are dumb, corny and convoluted to the point where it cannot be followed, and on top of it all, the combat somehow manages to be less deep than Dynasty Warriors.

Even on the hardest settings, there is no challenge to this game. Anyone with

Even on the hardest settings, there is no challenge to this game. Anyone with basic knowledge of simple movement and that can hit one button to attack can play this game well. There is no silver lining or saving grace to this game, it's just boring, repetitive madness with zero fun factor.

For my 6th birthday my family toook me to Disney world. i had enjoyed some disney movies so I was excited to try out the rides. Little did I know this experience wouid scar me for life. At first it was fun and I got these gacha baggies. I was banking on a wall E figurine and bam as I opened the final baggie, inside was the most beautiful thing I have seen to date. A 3 by 3 cm wall e figure. I had fun but the tripping was coming to a close. Then bam her appeared. Mickey Mouse, or as I know him now, my mortal enemy. he too had been searching for a wall e figurine and saw mine and was overtaken with a jealous rage. He cam over and beat the living day lights out of 6 year old me. Everyone around us just watched and clapped thinking it was a show or something. He stole my wall e figurine and I have been plotting my revenge ever since. After years of planning I got lazy and decided leaving this review was suitable revenge Expand

  1. An all around excellent game. It looks phenomenal and plays even better. What started out as a crazy fan based experiment for Square-Enix has panned out to one of the most entertaining titles of the year. [JPN Import]

From the amazing opening cg cinema (oh god, I think I just soiled myself it was so good) with Utada Hikaru's newest song, Passion, to the kick ass ending, this game rocked and set itself a more than worthy successor to the first Kingdom Hearts. [JPN Import]
  3. It has an excellent battle system, more variety than almost any game out there, great graphics, and an interesting story. The title isn't perfect though. The story lacks a bit of cohesiveness and the auto-camera still can't seem to track everything that's going on. [JPN Import]
