  1. With stunning graphics and solid gameplay, you’ll be hard pressed to find flaws that take anything away from this game.

Depending on how you slice it, it is arguably the prettiest game ever made.

I was expecting a boring and slow-paced fighting title like "Tekken Tag Tournament," but what I found was one of the best fighting games of 2001.
  4. If 2D fighters are ever a crime, I'll heartily plead Guilty.
  5. The most serious complaint comes from a lack of options...Despite this, Guilty Gear's aesthetic beauty and rich gameplay are more than enough for fighting fans.
  6. Beautiful visuals, amazing depth and accessibility that few other fighters have been able to offer.
  7. The game is accessible enough that I had a chance to defeat a master that I rarely come close to beating on other games.

It plays amazingly well and there's plenty of style and depth to be found here. [Dec 2001, p.161]
  9. 2D beat-'em-up aficionados are unlikely to be convinced by the game.

GGX’s solid and responsive control scheme keeps the fighting exciting, although some moves are difficult to execute and require patience to master fully…if at all.
  11. It’s got a cast of characters unlike any other, complete with unique fighting styles and a slew of new gameplay strategies to master. The incredibly intense fighting and over-the-top and utterly insane style aren’t too shabby, either. It’s a far cry from the old Hadokens, Shoryukens and Psycho Crushers of old, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad thing.
  12. Does its job quite well--it's a graphically remarkable yet otherwise conventional 2D fighting game that plays well, sounds good, and offers a memorable lineup of cool characters with countless crazy moves.

A wicked weapons-based 2D delight that should bring joy to fans of fighting games everywhere. [Dec 2001, p.236]

Not only does GGX not push the 2D fighter envelope, it doesn't even give it the slightest edge. [Dec 2001, p.93]
  15. It has solid game mechanics, excellent visuals and one of the biggest assortments of freaks for characters ever.

Guilty Gear finally comes into its own, and it's pretty f*cking cool.

While Guilty Gear OG was weird and limited and felt too ambitious for it's time, Guilty Gear X is a roaring success taking everything that made Guilty Gear charming and cranking it up to 10, the sprites actually look god in motion here, the characters finally start becoming interesting outside of the supplementary materiel, the music rocks and the gameplay is fun and addictive.

Introducing one of my favourite characters, Dizzy, the games story is a fun video game romp, which is all I can really ask for from a fighting game. It revolves around the big tiddy 3 year old that is Dizzy (yes that is canon) and her being a Gear, with all our favourite maniacs hunting her for the bounty or for their own personal reasons, and of course, hijinks ensue. Unfortunately it is a fighting game so... yup that's it.

Guilty Gear X is a true accomplishment and deserves more love from that masses, a brilliant sprite based game, rocking music and a fun story tied together with it's remarkably fun gameplay, but... it can be better.
