It doesn't beat Resident Evil 4 for game of the year, which gets a prefect 10, but GoW is still very enjoyable. I'm not entirely sure why it gets that point off. I sometimes got annoyed by the fighting and it felt linear and repetitive at times; a puzzle, a battle, a puzzle, a battle. Even with some slight problems it is one of the best PS2 games.

This game is definitely visually stunning -- perhaps the best graphics I've seen on the PS2. While I have no problems with a challenging enemy or situation, spending up to an hour trying to figure out how to kill one thing just doesn't do it for me. IMHO, that whole concept should be scraped, and replaced with puzzles that challenge the mind, more than the fingers. But even that aside, it's still a great game that I recommend for older gamers -- it is NOT a game for kids. Expand

This is the first game in a long time where everything comes together to give a genuinely great gaming experience. The graphics are top-notch. The action is intense. The music swells. The storyline could easily be considered a lost epic in Greek mythology. Top to bottom, this game is excellent.

Pure entertainment and a sense of pride and accomplishment. Mix that with an epic story and just a dash (ok, about 14 pounds) of blood and sex, not to mention the greatest anti-hero in the history of video games, and you have the best game of the current generation of consoles. An awesome game with amazing combat mechanics. The plot is good, although could have been better developed. But the game is too short. Still an amazing experience with puzzles fitted in to make the experience more varied. The main music theme is very good, but lacks variety. Lots of blood and gore, so if you actively dislike that sort of thing dont get it. Otherwise, go buy it.

However, with all the mods already out, and several more on the way, it's no big leap to believe that this will become a true classic once touched up by patches and mods. It has an incredibly moddability and already features things never found in III and 4, except through mods: milk cows, wolf packs, far more complex AI, and a far more dynamic campaign where the AI responds well to your every move, and to all the other traffic in the world. Sure, it's got its fault, but Silent Hunter 2, III and 4 were also fairly unfinished when they were released, and look at them now, SHIII in particular with the Grey Wolves Expansion. This is the most gripping (I never use that word) game I have ever played, as it transcends what one believes to be a simple videogame and becomes an experience. It isn't the amazing graphics, story or gameplay that bring God of War to the forefront; it is, for me, the games sprawling environments. Even though you are confined to one linear path, you don't feel as if you are. This game convinces the player that they are part of a greater conflict, a war. When I entered Athens and saw armies raging below, I was moved... but i was moved even more when i climbed Pandora's temple and was able to see Kronos, carrying the massive buliding on his back, crawling below me; his head bobbing up and down in in agony. Yes, this game does not expand the genre very much, but it makes up for that fact by refining action adventure mechanics and implementing SUPERB presentation. God of War simply must be played to appreciated. While Resident Evil 4 is still my current favorite game of 2005, GoW is a very close second. Expand

I'm a This game will show just what the PS2 is capable of. Graphics are magnificent all through out gameplay, not just in cutscenes. Music is very well polished, it adds depth to the player when they're hacking and slashing. However, there is something lacking in plot development, which is understandable since this game seems to only focus on satisfying the male testosterone. I'm a girl and I enjoyed the game, but I have no idea why everyone is raving mad about it. And not because I am a girl either. I enjoy violent games like GTA as well, and in terms of violence and gore, this game delivers - but thats it. If you like a violent, no brainer, and short hack and slash, this is for you. Expand

Best PS2 game of the year. With great top-notch PS2 graphics that looks almost like an Xbox game. Great animation. There are only 3 bosses but dang are those bosses awesome! Also I must mention this game is very very violent and sensual (three-some mini-game) so its not for kids and what I love abvout the controversy is that its tasteful and not over used like its a gimmick which is kept true to fashion to what Greeks thought and did. This is a must-buy for anyone over the age of 17. Pretty much perfect in every way imaginable! The graphics often reach cut scene standard and the fighting, violence, gore, sex ect are top notch! All you need in a game and more, a host of unlockables make it one of the most replayable games on the PS2 and the bosses are spectacular, nothing needs changing, nothing needs to get any better, if it was any closer to perfection, it would be godly!

Without a doubt, this is the best game I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Halo, GTA, Legend of Zelda... these are all great games, but the truest form of story, action, and sheer brilliant entertainment of this game make it a must own title on any system.

Who here thinks Tely S. is on some serious drugs? Is he kidding or what? Does he honestly believe that people are not simply laughing at his asinine review right now when not one review has graded this game below a 90? Simply put, God of War is the best action adventure game yet to come out on Playstation 2. You are armed with the Blade of Chaos, a weapon that I would loosely compare to Who here thinks Tely S. is on some serious drugs? Is he kidding or what? Does he honestly believe that people are not simply laughing at his asinine review right now when not one review has graded this game below a 90? Simply put, God of War is the best action adventure game yet to come out on Playstation 2. You are armed with the Blade of Chaos, a weapon that I would loosely compare to Jean Reno's whip in Onimusha 3 but oh, so much better! You wield this thing so flawlessly and devastate your enemy with such precision that is isn't rare to rack up 200-hit combos in the process of destroying a pack of undead skeletons or Gorgons or Minotaurs or any of a wealth of mythological enemies. You can also gain magic throughout the game, granted to you by different Gods such as Aphrodite and Poseidon and when used in combination with your Blades of Chaos, you are a force to be reckoned with! Let me just say that I absolutely adored this game as much as everyone else who's reviewed it here (with the exception of Tely S. who is obviously a prepubescent malcontent who is desperately in need of a nap) and you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful and entertaining action/adventure game on the Playstation 2. From the gorgeous scenery and set designs to the intricate detailing of the numerous mythological creatures you encounter to the haunting score that adds an ominous yet engaging atmosphere to each new environment, this game was put together so well that after you finally complete it you will shed a tear for you will not want it to be open. But, wait! There's more, even after you beat the game, you unlock a slew of bonus features that puts the replay value of this game through the roof. Whether it be a series of challenging side-quests, new costumes for your hero to adorn, or interviews with the games designers, there is plenty here for you to enjoy and experience once the end credits roll for the main game. Please, do yourself a favor and immediately do what ever it takes to add this game to your collection. You will not be sorry. Expand
