With a near-limitless plethora of horses, tons of strategy, and loads of gameplay extras, this is a sure bet. [May 2003, p.83]

The races are challenging and exciting, plus the management features give the game a considerable amount of depth. The game goes beyond its high concept and delivers a rather enjoyable hybrid of arcade and simulation-styled gameplay.
  3. 79
It's got plenty of depth and, believe it or not, there is skill involved. Considering the lack of horse racing games on the PS2, this is truly as good as it gets.
  4. With 3,000 horses and an assortment of gameplay modes and mini-games you won’t be looking anywhere else to satisfy your horse fetish.

More often than not, I found myself totally absorbed in this moment, rocking back and forth like an idiot while my heart raced as the finish neared. [May 2003, p.74]
  6. GMR Magazine

The game may be too complicated and difficult for most, but you've got to appreciate its dedication to realism and great graphics. [June 2003, p.75]

Even though the game was intriguing from a documentary point of view, my interest began to wane a few hours into it.

The game is well animated, where the graphics are pretty good. Lots of strategies are required. It's a sure investment.

LOOKING A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. Gallop Racer delivers to at least a few types of players #1. People who like racing games have a novelty LOOKING A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. Gallop Racer delivers to at least a few types of players #1. People who like racing games have a novelty game to put into their collection. #2 People who like horse racing (but probably dont play video games) #3 But the real winner is the gamer who enjoys planning and tweaking with strategies. I have enjoyed this game for the same reason I sign up for 10 live drafts of fantasy football. Planning and analyzing the best horse available to me. Hoping all my work results in winning lots of races and advancing in the game. The graphics are pretty good and the game is not very predictable. Gamespot is dead wrong... this games interface makes it easy to learn!! The tutotial sections are outstanding.. Just when I think I have a horse that can win every race in a season it seams to get harder to win, especially moving up into better racing classes. I do however have a major problem with the information packet that comes in the box. I think most gaming reviewers should start looking at this information in their reviews. Gallop Racer 2003 is a great example of a pretty good game that I enjoy playing for hours but I may never understand certain aspects of the game because the info packet is lousy. For example I cant find anywhere why the rumble pack in my controller shakes while I am racing. It gets softer and more intense depending on what is going on. I assume this has somthing to do with the feel rating but how do I know if I am shooting for more or less rumble? The info book makes no mention of this effect and how to use it. How do I know if Green or Blue is better for my horses health when trying to decide when to enter a race? YEAH, YEAH, I know, I printed out the Gallop Racer 2001 booklet on Tecmo's web site and alot of the information is there however, Why should I have to go searching for the info for a game? The info book makes no mention of it. In general the booklet does a very poor job in explaining what the strategies are for some of the game effects and options. I am not sure why I need descriptions of four of the jockey's which include their blood type so my guess is Tecmo does not have a person who works on this information as part of their job (BIG MISTAKE) your marketing group should be fired. If the info packet made sense this game ranks 8 - 9 for me and may still rank that higher for my gaming pleasure once I figure out all the info through trial and error. Although 80 races has only shed light on several of my questions. Torode Expand
